British Airways returns to short-haul European flying from Gatwick Airport, BA Euroflyer is coming

British Airways made this announcement:

After two years British Airways returns to international short-haul flying from Gatwick Airport today (Tuesday, March 29), as its first service departed for Larnaca at 6:25am.

As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic the airline suspended its European operation at Gatwick Airport, moving a number of flights over to Heathrow. Today marks a milestone in the airlineโ€™s recovery as it finally returns to international short-haul flying from the airport.

Initially services will operate under the British Airways Air Operators Certificate (AOC), before moving operations to a new British Airways branded subsidiary, BA Euroflyer* later in the year. The new airline will operate in a similar manner to the companyโ€™s existing subsidiary BA Cityflyer, flying under the British Airways brand and delivering a premium British Airways product.

On the first day of operation, British Airways will operate four short-haul flights to Larnaca, Amsterdam, Paphos and Tenerife. In total, customers will have the choice of 35 destinations to fly to from Gatwick, before more destinations are added later this year.

Not only has the British Airways return to Gatwick created more choice for customers, but also helped create jobs as the airline undertook both a cabin crew and pilot recruitment campaign to fill positions at its new subsidiary.

Customers flying on the airlineโ€™s new subsidiary will receive the same high level of service they expect of British Airways as well as enjoying the benefits of travelling with the UKโ€™s flag carrier including a generous baggage allowance, free water and snacks, free seat selection at -24 hours and frequent flyer benefits which include lounge access.

All of the airlineโ€™s services will have a Club Europe (business class) cabin setting it apart from its no frills competitors. Customers flying in this cabin will have access to a premium check-in experience, exclusive lounges and a complimentary gourmet meal and bar service on board.

Customers in the airlineโ€™s Euro Traveller (economy) cabin will be able to purchase food before travel which will include fresh options from Tom Kerridge as part of the airlineโ€™s โ€˜Speedbird Cafรฉโ€™ menu and / or order ambient products and drinks onboard via their mobile phone.

The return of European short-haul flying from Gatwick comes a day after the airline returned to its home at Gatwick South Terminal following its reopening. To mark the occasion the airline also showed off its new dedicated World Traveller Plus check-in zone which is available for customers flying on a long-haul service with the airline. The new zone which sits alongside the airlineโ€™s Club World desks gives those travelling in its World Traveller Plus cabin (premium economy) an exclusive check-in experience. They will shortly be rolled out at Heathrow, followed by the rest of the British Airways network.

*Although registered as โ€˜BA Euroflyerโ€™ the subsidiary will be branded as โ€˜British Airwaysโ€™ across its aircraft and its customer touchpoints

Southern Airways Express acquires Air Choice One

Southern Airways Express has announced it is acquiring Air Choice One (St. Louis):

Southern Airways Express, one of the largest commuter airlines in America, has acquired St. Louis-based Air Choice One (Multi-Aero, Inc.). The move will strengthen the Essential Air Service offerings to the marketplace on the heels of the recent announcements of regional airline SkyWest and commuter airline Boutique’s intention to terminate service to at least 31 cities in the program.

This is Southern’s fifth airline acquisition in the last eight years. Southern was founded in Memphis, Tenn. in 2013 and has since grown into one of the largest commuter airlines in America. Now serving 38 cities from Nantucket to Honolulu, Southern has consistently ranked as one of the most reliable and on-time airlines in the nation. In 2021, excluding weather, Southern completed 99.3% of its nearly 64,000 scheduled flights.

The addition of Air Choice One grows Southern’s fleet size to nearly 50 aircraft and increases the number of pilots that Southern flows to the larger carriers. Since 2018, Southern and SkyWest have partnered to build the most successful pilot cadet program in the country, soon to be creating hundreds of pilots per year for the industry.

As part of the acquisition, Air Choice One CEO Shane Storz will join Southern as an executive vice president. In addition to decades of industry experience, he will bring a leadership team and other support staff that will be absorbed into Southern’s current infrastructure, allowing for safe, strong, and healthy growth over the ensuing months and years.

Air Choice One currently has one contract in the Essential Air service program: Jonesboro, Ark. Service from Jonesboro will be rebranded as Southern, allowing the city to enjoy Southern’s interline connectivity to major carriers. Southern has interline ticketing and baggage agreements with American, United and Alaska Airlines.

In addition to the immediate benefits, growing Southern’s fleet size further enhances the airline’s commitment to sustainable aviation. Southern has agreements with multiple technology companies to retrofit its aircraft with hybrid-electric, electric, and hydrogen-powered engines once those technologies are approved for commercial use, making Southern the worldwide leader in the next generation of passenger air service.

In 1979, Multi-Aero, Inc. d/b/a Air Choice One was established in St. Louis, Missouri, as an innovative and multi-faceted aviation company. Air Choice One is a family-owned and operated company with over 60 years of combined Aviation experience!

We can provide rural communities the convenience to connect to the national transportation system via international airport hubs such as St. Louis Lambert (STL) andย Chicago O’Hare (ORD). This connection allows our passengers to connect to other airline flights or get to their desired destination.

JetBlue to create 5,000 new jobs in New York City

JetBlue Airways, New Yorkโ€™s Hometown Airlineยฎ and New York City Mayor Eric Adams today announced that the company will be adding 5,000 jobs in New York City in 2022. JetBlue will also work with the city to create a new workforce partnership to connect more New Yorkers with high quality JetBlue jobs and to develop a strong pipeline for future careers at the airline. Mayor Adams joined JetBlue leaders today at a major hiring event to assist in filling many of these new positions.

Todayโ€™s hiring event, held at JetBlueโ€™s hangar at John F. KennedyInternational Airport (JFK), facilitated on the spot interviews and conditional hiring of diverse candidates for a variety of positions within the JetBlue operation based in New York City, including roles in airport operations, ground operations, technical operations, inflight, information technology and other support center roles. JetBlue currently employs around 8,000 crewmembers based in New York City, at the airports as well as in JetBlueโ€™s Long Island City Support Center, its corporate headquarters. The airlineโ€™s growth and hiring as well as its low fare expansion is due in great part to the Northeast Alliance, a partnership it has entered into with American Airlines. Those seeking information about future JetBlue hiring events and careers at JetBlue should visit jetblue.com/careers.

โ€œAs New Yorkโ€™s Hometown Airline, JetBlueโ€™s commitment goes well beyond the flights we operate here,โ€ said Robin Hayes, chief executive officer, JetBlue. โ€œWeโ€™re thrilled to partner with Mayor Adams to support his administrationโ€™s Blueprint for New York Cityโ€™s Economic Recovery by encouraging travel to New York City. Weโ€™ll do that by hiring thousands of new JetBlue crewmembers in 2022, and through our continued engagement in the community to create a strong pipeline for future JetBlue crewmembers and a more resilient workforce for New York City as a whole.โ€

โ€œNew York City is coming back, and we are working with our business community to invest in our people, restart our economic engines, and give New Yorkers pathways to quality jobs,โ€ said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. โ€œNot only is JetBlue one of our largest home-grown employers, but the company is creating 5,000 new jobs in our city. I look forward to working with them on a new workforce partnership that will provide more New Yorkers with career pathways and opportunities in this critical industry.โ€

โ€œGetting visitors back to the five boroughs and supporting our tourism industry are critical in our efforts to drive an equitable economic recovery,โ€ said New York City Deputy Mayor for Economic and Workforce Development Maria Torres-Springer. โ€œNot only is JetBlue adding thousands of jobs in New York, but they are also making it easier for people to access the amazing attractions our city has to offer.โ€

โ€œAs the tourism and travel industry bounces back from COVID-19โ€™s disruption, initiatives like Mayor Adamsโ€™ and JetBlueโ€™s workforce partnership program will ensure New Yorkers of all backgrounds share in the industryโ€™s recovery and growth. Furthermore, this initiative will open doors for qualified diverse professionals who – although highly skilled – may lack the connections and access often key to securing an offer,โ€ said Rep. Gregory W. Meeks (NY-5). โ€œBreaking down such artificial barriers in employment is key to ensuring communities like the one I represent can share in our nationโ€™s prosperity. I look forward to seeing the positive outcomes of this program, especially here in Queens at JFK, the gateway to America.โ€

The partnership announced today builds on JetBlueโ€™s long history of supporting community programs and fostering local aviation talent in New York City. JetBlue partners with a range of community organizations and schools, including the Council for Airport Opportunity, CUNYโ€™s Aviation Institute at York College, and Vaughn College, to develop and attract crewmembers to join the airline. As part of JetBlueโ€™s mission of Inspiring Humanity, the airline works to inspire students and open their eyes to a range of aviation career options, from pilots and engineers to air traffic controllers and more. The organizations JetBlue partners with and supports helps not only to spark interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), but also break down barriers that block or prevent underrepresented youth from achieving their dreams. The JetBlue Foundation provides grants benefitting STEM education and has supported the Aviation High School in Long Island City, which introduces aviation science to students from a variety of backgrounds.

โ€œTodayโ€™s hiring event is just the first step in JetBlueโ€™s workforce partnership with New York City,โ€ Hayes said. โ€œIn partnership with Mayor Adams and his team, weโ€™ll be able to attract even more high quality talent to JetBlue even as we invest in nurturing the next generation of aviation professionals.โ€

JetBlue is also committed to creating development opportunities for current frontline and operations crewmembers to prepare for and pursue corporate opportunities in JetBlueโ€™s Long Island City Support Center. Participants in the JET OPS to Support Services Pathway Programreceive holistic on-the-job training in skill areas they may otherwise not be exposed to, including finance and marketing. Current JetBlue crewmembers at all levels can pursue a path to a JetBlue pilot or maintenance technician position through the industry-leading JetBlue Gateways development programs. JetBlue Gateways creates opportunities for external candidates as well, and as part of the program in 2021, the airline partnered with Vaughn College to work in creating a direct pipeline of local pilots.

This city has so much to offer, and as we employ its incredible talent as crewmembers, we will continue to promote this great place as a top destination.โ€

JetBlue recently announced its strengthened commitment to New York and its decision to keep its corporate headquarters at its current home in Long Island City. In addition, the airline continues to further plans to bring more air service to New Yorkers across the regionโ€™s three main airports. Its flagship Terminal 5 at JFK has been celebrated for its customer-friendly design and facilities, and plans are in place to develop a $3 billion world-class terminal on the Terminals 6 and 7 sites.

“We are proud of the work our team at NYCEDC did to keep JetBlueโ€™s headquarters in NYC and expand Terminal 6 at JFK,” said Andrew Kimball, president and CEO, New York Economic Development Corporation. “We believed if JetBlue would remain our hometown airline, it would mean good jobs for New Yorkers and that’s what we are seeing here today with the promise of 5,000 new jobs for our families and communities. The combination of access to talent at all levels, creating a strong pipeline, along with New York City’s culture of innovation and dynamism is a perfect draw for all companies to locate and grow here.”

The new Terminal 6 project will seamlessly integrate with Terminal 5, building on JetBlueโ€™s award-winning customer experience while expanding the airlineโ€™s footprint farther into the north side of the airport. It helps secure JetBlueโ€™s long-term future at JFK with opportunities for new gates starting in 2025, and offers partner airlines the ability to co-locate with JetBlue to improve connectivity for customers.

Emirates marks 30 years of best-in-skies entertainment and connectivity

\In 1992, Emirates made the bold decision to install TV screens in all seats across all cabin classes throughout its fleet, a revolutionary move that shaped traveller expectations and the inflight entertainment industry in the decades to come.

Emirates has not looked back since, constantly introducing new innovations that drove advancements in entertainment and connectivity at 40,000 feet. Large, ultra-high definition 4k screens, with faster and improved Wi-Fi connectivity, are among the exciting developments Emirates has planned for its new generation IFE systems that will be delivered with its future fleet on order, as the airline continues to improve its inflight offering. Not only that, Emirates is constantly updating its extensive library of content on ice, with over 100 movies and 200 episodes of TV being added each month.

Emiratesโ€™ award-winning ice inflight entertainment system, originally launched in 2003 with 500 channels, today offers every passenger over 5,000 channels of on-demand movies, music, TV shows, box sets and documentaries, in over 40 languages. The total accumulated hours of entertainment includes over 3,900 hours of movies and TV, and over 3,300 hours of music and podcasts. An Emirates passenger would have to fly over 500 times from Dubai to Sydney in order to consume the entire library.

The success of Emiratesโ€™ IFE investments and strategy is demonstrated by the loyalty and positive feedback from its customers across all cabin classes, as well as through the numerous industry awards including โ€˜Best Inflight Entertainmentโ€™ at the 2022 APEX Passenger Choice Awardsยฎ, and โ€˜Skytrax Worldโ€™s Best Inflight Entertainmentโ€™ every year since 2005.

In addition to entertainment, Emirates ice offers a range of other practical features, such as: the ability to check the status of your flight while en route; a real-time view of the sky during take-off and landing from cameras that are fixed on the aircraftโ€™s nose, tail and underbelly; a helpful travel guide about Emiratesโ€™ hub Dubai; EmiratesRED; the worldโ€™s first inflight TV shopping channel; and a range of personal development content including LinkedIn Learning.

Emirates customers can browse the extensive range of content available on ice, create their very own playlist in The Emirates Mobile App, then sync it on board for a more personalised travel experience.

SmartLynx sourcing over 1,000 personnel for its growing team

SmartLynx Airlines has made this announcement:

As the pandemic laid waste to businesses around the world, some forward-thinking companies used the opportunity to create new and more diversified business strategies. SmartLynx Airlines, a subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group, took this time of disruption to diversify its business model and take in over 1,000 new personnel to service its expanding fleet.

Transforming its single-strategy business line to a triple-strategy model โ€“ passenger narrow-body, passenger long-haul, and cargo narrow-body/long-haul flights โ€“ the European ACMI, charter and cargo operator is approaching the traditional high season. With its biggest fleet to date, the airline actively engaged in a highlighted international cabin and flight crew onboarding process.ย

In February 2022, SmartLynx had signed an agreement with SMBC Aviation Capital for the lease of two Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, two of which will join the companyโ€™s fleet in the spring of this year. With such an increase in capability, the company is currently in the process of gathering over 1,000 additional flight and cabin crew members to service its expanding fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft.

As part of the sourcing process, SmartLynx Airlines has already conducted โ€˜open-door daysโ€™ for cabin crew in February and continues into March at locations across Europe. The events attracted record numbers of attendees where it was announced that SmartLynx was happy and willing to meet those with no previous flight experience as all of the necessary training courses will be provided directly by SmartLynx.

SmartLynx Airlines began 2021 with a fleet of 12 aircraft that grew to 36 units by the end of the year. Following on the back of such massive growth, the company is now focused on growing its fleet to 65 units by the end of 2022, including the addition of 8 cargo freighters.
