QANTAS Group to require employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19

The QANTAS Group will require all employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 as part of the national carrierโ€™s commitment to safety.

Frontline employees โ€“ including cabin crew, pilots and airport workers โ€“ will need to be fully vaccinated by 15 November 2021 and the remainder of employees by 31 March 2022. There will be exemptions for those who are unable for documented medical reasons to be vaccinated, which is expected to be very rare.

The policy follows consultation with Qantas and Jetstar employees including a survey sent to 22,000 people to seek their views on vaccination. The 12,000 responses received makes it one of the biggest single surveys on this topic in Australia. The results showed that of those who responded:

  • 89 per cent had already been vaccinated or are planning to be.
  • 4 per cent were unwilling or unable to get the jab.
  • Around three-quarters think it should be a requirement for all employees to be vaccinated and would be concerned if other employees in the workplace werenโ€™t vaccinated.

Thousands of aviation workers supporting international flights in New South Wales, South Australia and New Zealand are already required to be vaccinated by those jurisdictions. Multiple airlines around the world have also made it a requirement.

Announcing the policy, Qantas Group CEO Alan Joyce said: โ€œHaving a fully vaccinated workforce will safeguard our people against the virus but also protect our customers and the communities we fly to.

โ€œOne crew member can fly into multiple cities and come into contact with thousands of people in a single day. Making sure they are vaccinated given the potential of this virus to spread is so important and I think itโ€™s the kind of safety leadership people would expect from us.

โ€œWe provide an essential service, so this will help guard against the disruptions that can be caused by just one positive COVID-case shutting down a freight facility or airport terminal,โ€ Mr Joyce said.

โ€œItโ€™s clear that vaccinations are the only way to end the cycle of lockdowns and border closures and for a lot of Qantas and Jetstar employees that means getting back to work again. This was one of the largest responses to any survey weโ€™ve conducted, even with thousands of our people stood down, which shows just how important this is for them.

โ€œSince vaccines became available, weโ€™ve strongly encouraged all of our people to get the jab and are offering paid time off to get it done. We were really pleased to see from the survey that more than three quarters of those who responded have already rolled up their sleeve at least once and 60 per cent have had both jabs.

โ€œMany of our people said they would feel concerned about working with unvaccinated colleagues, which is something that many workplaces across the country are grappling with.

โ€œWe understand there will be a very small number of people who decide not to get the vaccine, and thatโ€™s their right, but itโ€™s our responsibility to provide the safest possible environment for our employees and for our customers,โ€ added Mr Joyce.

Further discussions will take place with employees, their health and safety representatives and unions over the coming weeks on the detail of the policy, including how medical exemptions will be applied.

In a separate survey of more than 1000 Qantas customers, 92 per cent said they expect Qantas crew to be fully vaccinated.

    • 60 per cent are fully vaccinated
    • 12 per cent are booked or planning to book
  • 7 per cent undecided or preferred not to say

Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) becomes central hub for relief supplies to Namibia

Leipzig/Halle Airport (LEJ) is ramping up its activities as a hub for humanitarian aid: at the end of last week, two further relief planes took off from the airport, destined for Windhoek, Namibia. On board the Antonov 124 aircraft were urgently needed medical supplies, including masks and ventilators, for this South African country that has been badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, the German government has supplied more than 600 pallets of relief cargo, which has been flown to the area by Russiaโ€™s Volga-Dnepr Airlines. The AN-124 was loaded by PortGround, a subsidiary of Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG specialising in cargo and ramp handling. The operation was commissioned by the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO).

Earlier this year Volga-Dnepr Group and Leipzig/Halle Airport have inked the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the aim to strengthen Humanitarian Hub at LEJ. โ€œNot only do these flights demonstrate our commitment toward Humanitarian sector but also come as a logical step for further development of long-lasting strategic cooperation between LEJ and Volga-Dnepr Groupโ€œ emphasises Yulia Celetaria, the Global Healthcare Director for the Volga-Dnepr Group. โ€œOur recent flights to Namibia, organized in cooperation with our customer Maersk, is one of the roadmapโ€™s steps. Our flights to Namibia come the same week as we transport firefighting equipment to Greece and vaccine production machinery to India, which shows our readiness to support aid and relief sector.โ€

As part of the rescEU programme, also initiated by ECHO, there are plans to establish a new civil protection logistics centre at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The German Red Cross (DRK) will be setting up the site not far from the airport. The two partners also cooperated closely together on the flightsโ€™ preparation, enabling the action to pass off smoothly and rapidly.

Important hub for medical supplies

Alongside its regular passenger and freight traffic, Leipzig/Halle Airport also serves as a hub for medical relief supplies and protective equipment. In the first half of 2021, for example, in addition to regular air traffic, some 70 cargo charter flights were already handled, carrying millions of Covid-19 tests and PPE.

The EU and its member states have been setting up logistics centers to ensure that the populace remains properly supplied, even in a crisis. As well as being used to procure, store and maintain protective equipment, the centers can also act as a base for organizing the distribution logistics.

As Europeโ€™s fourth largest air cargo hub, the airport sustains important logistics and supply chains serving both industrial enterprises and the population. Altogether, some 60 cargo airlines fly in to the airport, operating a route network with more than 200 destinations around the world.

Lufthansa supports German federal government with airlift

Lufthansa is setting up an air bridge to Tashkent and Doha at short notice to support the German government with special flights during the evacuation. The first special flight chartered by the German government will depart from Tashkent this evening. An Airbus A340-300 long-haul aircraft will be used.

Within just a few hours, Lufthansa is thus quickly and flexibly enabling the first special flight from the Central Asian country, which no airline in the Lufthansa Group currently flies to on a regular basis. Traffic rights were applied for at short notice, crew deployment planning was carried out and the aircraft was released for the mission.

Lufthansa will operate further flights from Tashkent, Doha or other neighboring countries in the next few days as part of the airlift and in coordination with the German government.

SRV starts renovation work at Terminal 2 of Helsinki Airport as an alliance project

SRV and Finavia Corporation have signed an implementation-phase agreement to start the renovation project at Terminal 2 of Helsinki Airport. The renovation work will start immediately and is scheduled to be completed in 2023. The total value of the alliance agreement for the renovation project is about EUR 27 million, of which SRVโ€™s share is around EUR 26 million. The project will be recognised in SRVโ€™s order backlog in August. The renovation project will start immediately and it is expected to be completed in 2023.

The renovation work, covering approximately 35,000 square metres, is part of the extension of Terminal 2 at the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. The renovation will completely revamp the existing departure hall and arrivals hall as well as integrate them into the gate area and centralised baggage claim hall. The extension under construction will house the impressive main entrance to be opened in 2022, as well as new entrance and departure halls. The project is implemented by an alliance that includes SRV and Finavia, with the design team consisting of Arkkitehtitoimisto ALA Oy, Arkkitehtitoimisto HKP Oy and Ramboll Finland Oy.

The extension and alteration of Helsinki Airport seeks to create a new kind of service area for passengers in front of Terminal 2. The extension will be used for check-in, security control, baggage drop and greeting passengers. The extension will also include a travel centre combining different forms of transport. The new building and renovated area total 75,000 square metres, of which the extension that will be completed in the autumn accounts for around 40,000 square metres.
