Delta passengers and crew subdue an off-duty flight attendant on LAX-ATL flight

Delta Air Lines flight DL1730 from Los Angeles to Atlanta was forced to divert to Oklahoma City after an off-duty flight attendant disrupted the flight:

“An off-duty Delta Air Lines flight attendant apparently commandeered the intercom on an Atlanta-bound flight Friday night, leading to a scuffle that forced the plane to land in Oklahoma City, an airline spokesman said.

Crew members and passengers of Delta Flight 1730 subdued the man after he assaulted two flight attendants and, according to Oklahoma City police, said he was “going to take the plane down.” A passenger said other travelers described the man as strange and that he wore a helmet along with elbow and knee pads.”

Air Europa to operate 87% of its routes to the Americas from July

From July we will operate 87% of the routes to America, with flights to Miami, New York, Panama, Salvador de Bahia etc.

Air France to serve close to 200 destinations this summer

Air France has made this announcement:

In line with the gradual reopening of French borders and the lifting of certain travel restrictions, Air France teams at the airport and on board are fully mobilized to help customers reunite with their loved ones or reach their holiday destinations.

This summer, Air France plans to serve close to 200 destinations worldwide,ย including more than 110 destinations in France, Europe and North Africa.

On the short and medium-haul network, in addition to its usual schedule, thisย summer Air France will operate 81 seasonal routes including 23 new ones. More than 40 summer routes will be served on the domestic network, on departure from Paris and the French regions, notably to Corsica, with direct flights to the Mediterranean island offered from Paris, Bordeaux, Caen, Lille, Lyon, Pau, Rennes, Strasbourg and Nantes.

In Europe, this offer mainly concerns leisure destinations, such asย Greece, Portugal, Spain and Italy, on departure from Paris and the French regions.ย Overall and compared with summer 2019, Air France will increase its capacity to Greece by almost 80%, and its capacity to Portugal by nearly 25%.

On long-haul routes, the removal of the essential reasons to travel to most French Caribbean destinations will allow us to increase capacity on these routes that are essential to ensuring territorial continuity.ย This summer, Air France will operate up to 3 daily flights to Pointe-ร -Pitre (Guadeloupe), Fort-de-France (Martinique) and Saint-Denis de la Rรฉunionย on departure from Paris-Orly and Paris-Charles de Gaulle, facilitating connections with the entire Air France network.

In July and August 2021, the Air France flight schedule will represent 65% of the capacity offered during the same period in 2019,ย compared to 40% in May.

To support the increase in frequencies, the Air France maintenance teams are working hard to bring 10 medium-haul and 12 long-haul aircraft out of storage. In total,ย 181 Air France aircraft will be in operation this summer.

Stobart Air shuts down all operations, will be liquidated

 

Stobart Air (Dublin) today suddenly announced it was ending its Aer Lingus franchise and ceasing all operations.

In April 2021,ย Isle of Man-based company Ettyl Limited reached an agreement to buy the Esken shareholding in Stobart Air.

On June 11, 2021, Esken stated it was now clear that Ettyl was unable to conclude the transaction to acquire Stobart Air.

Esken terminated the agreement with Ettyl.

Last night, Esken advised the Board of Stobart Air that it would not continue to provide financial support for Stobart Air operations. No other purchaser could be found.

All Aer Lingus franchise and BA wet-lease flying was terminated with immediate effect. All flights are cancelled today. The Board of Stobart Air is now in the process of appointing a liquidator.

Air Antwerp ceases operations, could not survive COVID-19

Air Antwerp announced on June 11, 2021 it was ceasing all operations and business activities. The airline operated between Antwerp and London City Airport in the past. It depended on business travel that was severely curtailed during the pandemic.

The first flight operated on September 9, 2019 to London City Airport.

The airline has not operated any flights since last fall in 2020. Their only aircraft (OO-VLS) was in storage.

The company sent this message on social media:

oneworld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance urge universal travel standards

Delta Air Lines issued this statement:

To facilitate the safe restart of international travel and restore the value contributed by travel and tourism to the worldโ€™s economy, the three global airline alliances oneworld, SkyTeam and Star Alliance are calling on G7 governments, at their upcoming leadership summit on June 11-13, to agree on a common set of travel and health standards to enable the safe reopening of borders.

COVID-19 has significantly impacted the travel and tourism sector, which has long been a key contributor to many economies. A recent estimate by the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) showed that international tourism declined by around 80% in 2020. Prior to the pandemic, tourism contributed more than 4% of GDP for the average OECD country, with the World Travel and Tourism Council estimating up to 174 million jobs at risk globally.

In unison, the CEOs of the three global alliances โ€“ Kristin Colvile at SkyTeam, Rob Gurney for oneworld, and Jeffrey Goh of Star Alliance โ€“ said:ย โ€œInternational air travel and tourism are vital to the global economy. With considerable data now available to support government decisions in managing risks, decisive action from G7 members to open borders and support clear, consistent, and data-driven measures, would remove uncertainty, particularly around testing and quarantine.โ€

While vaccination programs offer hope in some markets, varying โ€“ and often fast-changing – rules and procedures across countries and at different airport hubs, continue to create confusion and stress for customers and disrupt travel. To provide much-needed clarity, the alliances โ€“ which collectively represent almost two-thirds of global air capacity prior to COVID-19 โ€“ urge G7 governments to lead the world in aligning to the following travel measures to reconnect travelers with the world, safely and securely:

  • Fully vaccinated passengers should be exempt from quarantine.
  • COVID-19 testing should be easily accessible, affordable and consistent.
  • Connecting passengers at airports should not be subject to additional testing or quarantine restrictions at the point of transfer if remaining in the transit zone.

Further, the three global airline alliances support IATAโ€™s call for governments to adopt digital processes to manage travel health credentials including vaccine and test certificates, and for G7 member states to agree to common requirements and standards for health credentials as set out by the World Health Organization and International Civil Aviation Organization.

“Vaccination will have a key role in the restart of international air travel and tourism. We strongly advocate for governments to accept accredited vaccination as a safe and appropriate reason to avoid quarantines. In the meantime, while we wait for the global population to be substantially vaccinated, it is important to have robust and consistent testing protocols, along with interoperable digital solutions developed to facilitate the customer journey,โ€ said the three alliance CEOs.

Annular eclipse โ€˜awesome, almost spiritualโ€™ from 39,000 feet

A few dozen lucky eclipse-lovers gathered at the Minneapolisโ€“St. Paul International Airport (MSP) early Thursday morning to climb aboard one of Deltaโ€™s A319-100 aircraft (N351NB), sponsored by Sky & Telescope,ย to view the annular eclipse just after sunrise over southern Canada.

The 3:15 a.m. flight departed on schedule and headed northeast along a carefully predetermined route calculated by astronomer Glenn Schneider, who has chased solar eclipses around the world since the early 1970s and been in the path of totality 33 times.

Just after sunrise, Delta Line Check Pilot Art Smith slightly tilted the starboard wing down so that passengers on the right side of the aircraft could witness the breathtaking annular eclipse in its entirety. No passengers were located on the left side, ensuring that all aboard had the opportunity to see the annular eclipseโ€™s trademark โ€œring of fire.โ€

An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon is near its farthest point from Earth, causing it to appear much smaller than the Sun as it moves between the Sun and Earth. An outer ring of the Sun remains visible outside the Moonโ€™s shadow, a sight commonly referred to as the โ€œring of fire.โ€

The viewing lasted just over four minutes before the plane began its return to MSP.

โ€œIn order to keep the winglet below the horizon and maintain the desired track, it was determined we needed to fly the aircraft with the autopilot off โ€“ thus making it a little more challenging,โ€ Smith explained. โ€œWe ran the profile in the simulator to ensure we had enough rudder authority at 39,000 feet. Once in flight, it worked just as we found in the simulator.โ€

โ€œIt was truly awesome, almost spiritual, to view the eclipse at its full annularity,โ€ Smith continued. โ€œIt really was a โ€˜ring of fireโ€™ and one of the most incredible sights Iโ€™ve been fortunate to see.โ€

Delta teams went above and beyond to coordinate the special flight, with many MSP-based employees from ACS, TechOps, In-Flight and more working to ensure the flight was carried out smoothly.

Sky & Telescope provided passengers on board the aircraft with safe, approved eclipse-viewing glasses. Passengers were required to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination before May 27 or to provide a negative PCR test result taken within 72 hours of departure from their home.

Lufthansa deploys the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental and Airbus A350 to Mallorca due to high summer vacation demand

Lufthansa is taking extraordinary measures in order to respond to a significant increase in booking demand for flights to Palma de Mallorca from both Frankfurt and Munich. The booking figures for the destination “PMI” have increased 25 times between April and the beginning of June 2021: The airline will be operating a Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental from Frankfurt to Palma de Mallorca four Saturdays in a row during the upcoming summer vacation in Hesse. Additionally, the airline also plans to operate an Airbus A350 from Munich to the Balearic Island at the start of the summer vacation in Bavaria. Although these routes are normally operated by an Airbus A321, on 31 July, two wide-body Lufthansa aircraft will be arriving on Palma de Mallorca.

Departing Frankfurt with the “Jumbo”

The Boeing 747-8 is the largest aircraft that Lufthansa is currently operating, offering up to 364 seats instead of the usual 215, which are normally available on this route. ย This wide-body aircraft offers passengers 88 Business Class seats (including First Class) as well as 276 seats in Economy Class (including Premium Economy).

The first โ€œJumboโ€ flight, LH1152, will be departing the Rhine Main metropolis on Saturday 17July at 10:20 a.m., just in time for the start of the Hessian summer vacation, and arrive at Palma de Mallorca airport at 12:25 p.m. The return flight, LH1153 will take place the same day at 14:25 p.m., arriving in Frankfurt at 16:45 p.m.

The modern and kerosene-efficient Boeing 747-8, also known as the “Queen of the Skies”, will operate for an addition three weekends, specifically on 24 July, 31 July and 7 August.

Departing Munich with the Airbus A350

The Airbus A350 is the most sustainable long-haul aircraft in the Lufthansa fleet. It consumes 20 percent less kerosene and is 50 percent quieter than previous models.ย  ย Those who want to experience the Lufthansa Airbus A350 along with its multi-award-winning cabin now have the chance to do so now. The aircraft offers 293 seats, including 48 in Business Class and 245 in Economy Class (including Premium Economy).

The A350 flight to Palma de Mallorca will take place at the start of the Bavarian summer vacations on Saturday 31 July. Departure from Munich is planned for 9:50 a.m. under flight number LH2658, arriving in Palma de Mallorca at 12:00 a.m. The return flight, LH2659, will take place the same day at 13:30 a.m. arriving in Munich at 15:35 p.m.

Norwegian to restart operations in Finland on June 28

Norwegian Air Shuttle will restart flying from Helsinki on June 28, 2021.

Norwegian will fly from HEL to Alicante, Malaga, Oslo, Oulu and Stockholm (Arlanda).

Eurowings opens a new base in Prague

Eurowings is expanding its European network: With the opening of a new basis in Prague, the German airline is expanding its services in Central Europe and will initially station two Airbus A320 aircraft in the Czech capital from October 31, 2021.

In the summer of 2022, three aircraft will take off for Eurowings with Prague becoming the 10th Eurowings base in Europe.

Starting on October 31, 2021, Eurowings will fly from Prague to several European cities, including Barcelona, Milan, Athens, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Tel Aviv and Birmingham.
