SAS: Continued strict travel restrictions, but Easter holidays lead to increase in travel during March

SAS has issued its traffic figures for March 2021:

In March 310,000 passengers flew with SAS, an increase of about 40% compared with February, but almost 70% lower than the same month last year. The increased demand led to an improvement in the load factor compared with February by 5 percentage points to 31%. The load factor continues to be generally higher on SASโ€™ Scandinavian and European traffic and amounted to 44% in March, which is an improvement of 2 percentage points compared with February.

โ€œThe number of passengers and future bookings has increased during the month, but from very low levels. The development of the demand for air travel is entirely dependent on ongoing vaccinations and that travel restrictions can be eased and coordinated between countries and regions. Although the market for the aviation industry remains challenging, we succeeded in securing favorable financing agreements for future deliveries of aircraft from Airbus during the month. The new aircraft take us toward a unified fleet with significantly lower fuel consumption and emissions,โ€ says Rickard Gustafson, CEO of SAS.

Air Canada and Government of Canada conclude agreements on liquidity program

Air Canada has announced that it has entered into a series of debt and equity financing agreements with the Government of Canada, which will allow Air Canada to access up toย $5.879ย billionย in liquidity through the Large Employer Emergency Financing Facility (LEEFF) program.

“Airย Canadaย entered the pandemic more than a year ago with one of the global airline industry’s strongest balance sheets relative to its size. We have since raised an additionalย $6.8 billionย in liquidity from our own resources to sustain us through the pandemic, as air traffic ground to a virtual halt inย Canadaย and internationally,” saidย Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada.

“The additional liquidity program we are announcing today achieves several aligned objectives as it provides a significant layer of insurance for Air Canada, it enables us to better resolve customer refunds of non-refundable tickets, maintain our workforce and re-enter regional markets. Most importantly, this program provides additional liquidity, if required, to rebuild our business to the benefit of all stakeholders and to remain a significant contributor to the Canadian economy through its recovery and for the long term.

“As vaccine deployments ramp up, we continue to work with the Government ofย Canadaย on the evolution of safe and science-based test and quarantine relief measures with a view to safely restarting our sector. We know that Canadians are looking forward to re-connecting with friends and family and taking those long-awaited vacations and business trips and we will be ready to safely connect Canadians withinย Canadaย andย Canadaย to the world,” said Mr. Rousseau.

The financial package provides for fully repayable loans that Air Canada would only draw down as required, as well as an equity investment, and is comprised of:

  • Gross proceeds ofย $500 millionย for Air Canada shares at a price ofย $23.1793ย per share;
  • $1.5 billionย in the form of a secured revolving credit facility at a 1.5% premium to the Canadian Dollar Offered Rate (CDOR); the facility is secured on a first lien basis by the assets of Aeroplan Inc., Air Canada’s shares in Aeroplan as well as certain assets of Air Canada, including certain intellectual property relating to the Aeroplan loyalty program;
  • $2.475 billionย in the form of three unsecured non-revolving credit facilities ofย $825 millionย each with: the first, five-year tranche at a 1.75% premium to CDOR per annum; the second, six-year tranche at 6.5% per annum (increasing to 7.5% after 5 years); and the third, seven-year tranche at 8.5% per annum (increasing to 9.5% after 5 years);
  • As part of the financial package, Air Canada issued an aggregate of 14,576,564 warrants exercisable for the purchase of an equal number of Air Canada shares, subject to customary adjustments, at a price ofย $27.2698ย per share during a 10-year term, representing 10% of the total commitment available under the above secured and unsecured credit facilities; 50% of the warrants vested concurrently with the implementation of the credit facilities and the remaining 50% of the warrants will vest on a proportional basis to the amounts that Air Canada may draw under the above unsecured credit facilities;
  • Up to approximatelyย $1.4 billionย in the form of an unsecured credit facility tranche to support customer refunds of non-refundable tickets. The facility will have a seven-year term and carry an annual interest rate of 1.211%.

As part of the financialย package, Air Canada has agreed to a number of commitments related to customer refunds, service to regional communities, restrictions on the use of the funds provided, employment and capital expenditures. These include:

  • Beginningย April 13, 2021, offering eligible customers who purchased non-refundable fares but did not travel due to COVID-19 sinceย February 2020, the option of a refund to the original form of payment. In support of its travel agency partners, Air Canada will not retract agency sales commissions on refunded fares;
  • The resumption of service or access to Air Canada’s network for nearly all regional communities where service was suspended because of COVID-19’s impact on travel, through direct services or new interline agreements with third party regional carriers;
  • Restricting certain expenditures, and restricting dividends, share buybacks and senior executive compensation;
  • Obligations to maintain employment at levels which are no lower than those atย April 1, 2021; and
  • The completion of the airline’s acquisition of 33 Airbus A220 aircraft, manufactured at Airbus’ย Mirabel, Quebecย facility. Airย Canadaย has also agreed to complete its existing firm order of 40 Boeing 737 Max aircraft. Completion of these orders remains subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable purchase agreements.

In connection with the Government’s equity investment, Air Canada has agreed to provide customary registration rights. The Air Canada shares and warrants issued to the Government are subject to certain transfer restrictions as well as an exercise cap which limits the Government’s aggregate voting rights from the shares acquired pursuant to this investment (including upon any exercise of the warrants) to 19.99%.

Porter Airlines sets another new start-up date

Porter Airlines is resetting its tentative date for resuming flights to June 21.

โ€œIn recent weeks, there has been open discussion by government officials about easing travel restrictions based on expectations that vaccination programs will be well advanced in the U.S. and Canada by early summer,โ€ said Michael Deluce, president and CEO of Porter Airlines.

โ€œWe recognize that short-term public health measures have been enhanced recently in certain jurisdictions. At the same time, we are looking ahead to summer and preparing for the possibility of some travel restrictions unwinding. We will begin the process of rebuilding our operations as soon as conditions allow based on government decisions.โ€

Porter previously set May 19, as its tentative restart date. Operations were temporarily suspended on March 21, 2020, due to COVID-19.

French domestic flights under 2:30 hours could be eliminated

The French National Assembly, the lower chamber of Parliament,ย  voted on April 10 to ban domestic flights in France under 2 and a half hours (2:30 hours).

The goal of the bill is to divert short-haul domestic air travel to more energy-efficient train service.

According to La Voix du Nord;

“The climate bill aims to eliminate links between Paris (Orly) and Nantes, Lyon or Bordeaux, but provides exceptions for connecting journeys. The Citizens’ Climate Convention had called for the elimination of domestic flights in case of alternatives of less than 4 hours by train, not 2:30.”

Can Malawi Airlines survive?

Malawi Airlines (formerly Malawian Airlines) (Lilongwe) is facing a cash crunch.

According to The Nation, the carrier is facing liquidation:

“The board of directors of the struggling Malawi Airlines Limited has recommended an โ€œorderly winding upโ€ of the company, saying the airline is technically insolvent.

The resolution to dissolve the company was duly passed on March 25, 2021 by the board in accordance with the memorandum or by-laws and articles of incorporation of the company.”

Unless the two owners inject more capital, the airline is likely to be shut down and liquidated.

Malawi Airlines Limited is the national flag carrier of Malawi. It is a registered partnership company with shareholding between Malawi Government (51%) and Ethiopian Airlines (49%). Malawi Airlines operates Boeing 737-700 and Bombardier Q400 aircraft leased from Ethiopian Airlines with direct flights to regional cities of Johannesburg, Lusaka, Harare and Dar es Salaam, besides domestic flights between Lilongwe and Blantyre.

Malawi Airlines was established in July 2013. It was first called Malawian Airlines until September, 2016 when the name changed to Malawi Airlines.

The airline started its operations on January 31, 2014 with domestic flights between Blantyre and Lilongwe. International flights were launched in February 2013 with the Harare route (February 3, 2014) and later Johannesburg route (February 17, 2014), and Dar es Salaam being added on February 18, 2014. On March 29, 2017 Malawi Airlines commenced flights to Nairobi in Kenya.

Emirates flight EK2021 carries only vaccinated crews and passengers

Emirates made this announcement:

Emiratesโ€™ one-of-a-kind flight EK2021 proudly made a journey across the different emirates on April 10, to celebrate the UAEโ€™s remarkable progress in vaccinating its citizens and residents from COVID-19 through a national vaccination program that has administered close to 9 million vaccines doses to date.

The special flight, which carried fully vaccinated crew and passengers onboard, was unprecedented in the industry in scale. With close to 400 fully vaccinated customers onboard, the flight illustrates confidence and undiminished excitement for air travel.

EK2021 was also supported by fully vaccinated teams across the aviation ecosystem, from onboard crew to ground staff, demonstrating the readiness of the UAEโ€™s aviation ecosystem to support the safe rebound of air travel.

In spite of the pandemic, the UAE has maintained its status as a leading global aviation hub and it will continue to grow its position as a hub for passengers and cargo traffic by investing in innovations and close collaborations with all stakeholders.

Onboard EK2021 was a group of senior officials from key aviation and health sector entities hosted by Emirates.

The UAE currently has one of the worldโ€™s highest rate of vaccinations for its citizens and residents at 90.22 doses per 100 people. The outstanding effort by the health authorities in the UAE has contributed to reaching the administration of close to 9 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine.

In parallel, the Emirates Group vaccination program rolled out to its UAE-based workforce less than three months ago, and since then has delivered COVID-19 shots to over 35,000 Emirates employees across its vaccination centers.

This flight was operated with Emiratesโ€™ newest Airbus A380 aircraft which featured the airlineโ€™s brand-new Premium Economy seats, and refreshed cabin interiors across every cabin class. First and Business Class customers were able to safely network and mingle in the iconic A380 Onboard Lounge. In addition, all customers enjoyed a full-course meal.

On the ground, passengers checked in using the latest biometric technologies for a seamless journey across multiple touch points. Biometric touch points were recently expanded to include over 18 check-in desks and 15 boarding gates at the airport. As a result, customers across all classes enjoyed seamless biometric entry to experience the First and Business Class lounge at DXB.

All EK2021 passengers were provided rapid COVID-19 PCR tests, facilitated by Pure Health. Pure Health, the largest integrated healthcare solutions provider in the UAE, has facilitated the administration of up to 4 million PCR tests at Dubai Airports to date. It has also played a vital role in providing COVID-19 testing support to the aviation industry at large, since the start of the pandemic.

After passengers checked in, they received the green โ€˜Choose to Vaccinateโ€™ pin and took photos to mark the special event. All EK2021 customers who passed through immigration also received a bespoke โ€˜Choose to Vaccinateโ€™ stamp on each boarding pass as an added keepsake.

As passengers disembarked, they were handed commemorative certificates for taking part in this initiative.

EK2021 was commanded by UAE National Captain Ahmed Al Obeidli, First Officer Ramon Wilde and flight deck crew were supported by Captain Ricky Garala. Earlier in the day, aviation entities across Dubai and the UAE were sending their messages of support on Twitter in advance of the special flight.

All proceeds for EK2021 have been donated to the Emirates Airline Foundation, the airlineโ€™s non-profit charity organization, which supports projects around the world aimed at improving the quality of life for disadvantaged children around the world.
