Etihad to increase flights between New York and Abu Dhabi starting in November

Etihad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, continues to strengthen its commitment in the US market with increased flights from New Yorkโ€™s JFK International Airport on the heels of the launch of the airlineโ€™s new A350 aircraft, and an expanded partnership with JetBlue.

In June Etihad launched their new A350 aircraft, Sustainability50, which carries a unique livery in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the federation of the UAE and Etihad’s commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The new aircraft is currently serving two routes in the US with flights from Abu Dhabi International Airport to Chicagoโ€™s Oโ€™Hare International and New Yorkโ€™s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-powered Airbus A350 is one of the most efficient aircraft types in the world, with 25% less fuel burn and CO2 emissions than previous-generation twin aisle aircraft. Developed in partnership between Etihad, Airbus and Rolls Royce, the Sustainability50 programme will see Etihad’s A350s used as flying test beds of new initiatives, procedures and technologies to reduce carbon emissions, building on the learnings derived from Etihad’s similar Greenliner programme for the Boeing B787 aircraft type.

In addition to increasing connectivity through the codeshare partnership, Etihad and JetBlue are developing a frequent flyer partnership that will allow both TrueBlue frequent fliers and Etihad Guest members to earn and redeem miles across both networks.

In addition to the introduction of the A350, increased services to JFK and expanded partnership with JetBlue, in June it was announced Etihad would be one of the first airlines, and first Middle East carrier, to be offered a permanent presence at JFKโ€™s New Terminal One, with the airlineโ€™s leadership attending the groundbreaking ceremony on 8 September.

Etihad passengers travelling to the US are able to take advantage of Etihadโ€™s US pre-clearance facility, the only United States Customs and Border Protection facility in the Middle East. This allows passengers bound for the United States to process all immigration, customs and agriculture inspections in Abu Dhabi before they board their flight, avoiding immigration and queues on arrival in the US.

Blue Air suspends operations, blames the government, plans to resume

Blue Air suspended all flights departing from all Romanian airports until at least September 12, 2022, blaming the seizure of its bank accounts by Romania’s Ministry of Environment.

All flights returned to Romania on September 6 when operations were completely halted.

Blue Air has now announced the freeze on its bank accounts had been lifted and also stated it would confirm today (September 8) when flights would resume (probably next week).

Norwegian releases its summer 2023 schedule plans

Norwegian Air Shuttle released this information:

A continued strong focus on the core Nordic markets and an improved offering on popular city and beach destinations across Europe are key elements in Norwegianโ€™s summer schedule for 2023. As part of the programme which runs from March to October 2023, Norwegian has put up 239 routes for sale.

– We are pleased to present our flying schedule for the coming summer season. The new schedule contributes to strengthening our position as a leading carrier in the Nordics with many high frequency routes in and between the Nordic countries and to popular destinations across Europe. We look forward to a good and busy summer season and to welcoming our passengers onboard, says Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian.

During the last couple of years, Norwegian has gradually increased itsโ€™ fleet as demand for air travel returned. Norwegian expects to operate 85 aircraft during the summer of 2023 which is an increase of 15 aircraft compared to the summer season 2022. This will allow Norwegian to offer more departures on the most popular routes, giving the customers even more flexibility as they plan their travels.

– I am happy that we have been able to gradually increase our capacity to match the demand in the market. During the coming summer season, we expect to increase the capacity even further to the benefit of our travelers, says Geir Karlsen.

The schedule that is already for sale now at norwegian.com contains 239 routes split across markets as follows:

Norway: 131 routes

Denmark: 51 routes

Sweden: 51 routes

Finland: 17 routes

The markets do not sum to 239 due to the fact that routes going between two markets are counted in both.

United invests another $15 million in electric flying taxi market with Eve

United Airlines today announced a $15 million investment in Eve Air Mobility and a conditional purchase agreement for 200 four-seat electric aircraft plus 200 options, expecting the first deliveries as early as 2026. This marks another significant investment from United in flying taxis โ€“ or eVTOLs (electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle) โ€“ that have the potential to revolutionize the commuter experience in cities around the world. Under the terms of the agreement, the companies intend to work on future projects, including studies on the development, use and application of Eve’s aircraft and the urban air mobility (UAM) ecosystem.

“United has made early investments in several cutting-edge technologies at all levels of the supply chain, staking out our position as a leader in aviation sustainability and innovation,” said Michael Leskinen, President of United Airlines Ventures.ย “Today, United is making history again, by becoming the first major airline to publicly invest in two eVTOL companies. Our agreement with Eve highlights our confidence in the urban air mobility market and serves as another important benchmark toward our goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050 โ€“ without using traditional offsets. Together, we believe our suite of clean energy technologies will revolutionize air travel as we know it and serve as the catalyst for the aviation industry to move toward a sustainable future.”

“United’s investment in Eve reinforces the trust in our products and services and strengthens our position in the North American market,” said Andre Stein, co-CEO of Eve. “I am confident that our UAM agnostic solutions, coupled with the global know-how we have been developing at Eve and Embraer’s heritage, are the best fit for this initiative, giving United’s customers a quick, economical and sustainable way to get to its hub airports and commute in dense urban environments. It is an unparalleled opportunity to work with United to advance the US UAM ecosystem, and we look forward to it.”

United was the first major U.S. airline to create a corporate venture fund, United Airlines Ventures (UAV), designed to support the company’s 100% green commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2050 without the use of traditional offsets. Through UAV, United has led the industry in investments in eVTOL and electric aircraft, hydrogen fuel cell engines, and sustainable aviation fuel. Last month, United gave a $10 million deposit to a California-based eVTOL company for 100 aircraft.

United’s investment in Eve was driven in part by confidence in the potential growth opportunities in the UAM market and Eve’s unique relationship with Embraer, a trusted aircraft manufacturer with a proven track record of building and certifying aircraft over the company’s 53-year history. Critically, their relationship includes access to Embraer’s service centers, parts warehouses and field service technicians, paving the way for a reliable operation. Upon entry into service, United could have its entire eVTOL fleet serviced by Eve’s agnostic service and support operations. Moreover, United joins the consortium led by Eve, which will simulate UAM operations in Chicagoย from Sept. 12.

Rather than relying on traditional combustion engines, eVTOL aircraft are designed to use electric motors, providing carbon-free flights and to be used as ‘air taxis’ in urban markets. Eve’s design uses conventional fixed wings, rotors and pushers, giving it a practical and intuitive lift-plus-cruise design, which favors safety, efficiency, reliability and certifiability. With a range of 60 miles (100 km), its vehicle has the potential not only to offer a sustainable commute but also to reduce noise levels by 90 percent compared to current conventional aircraft. Eve is also creating a new air traffic management solution designed for the UAM industry to scale safely. This software is intended to perform at the same safety level as Embraer’s existing air traffic management software and expected to be a strategic asset to helping the entire industry grow.

Air Canada marks its 85th anniversary, donates CF-TCC to Winnipeg’s Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada

Air Canada has made this announcement:

In celebration of its 85th anniversary, Air Canada has donated its historic aircraft, an original Lockheed L-10A Electra airplane to Winnipeg’sRoyal Aviation Museum of Western Canada. The iconic aircraft, the first fleet type flown by the carrier, made its final journey as it taxied from the Air Canada hangar at WinnipegInternational Airport to the Museum at a handover ceremony. The airplane will go on permanent public display as an iconic piece of aviation history.

The aircraft, with registration CF-TCC, was one of three purchased by Air Canada’s forerunner, Trans-Canada Air Lines (TCA), in 1937. It was until recently one of only two Lockheed L10-A Electra aircraft still flying in the world.

Named after a bright star in the Pleiades star cluster, the 10A Electra was the pride of the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. In the 1930s, this twin-engine, all-metal monoplane was the exciting new face of commercial aviation.

The History of CF-TCC

CF-TCC was one of three L-10A aircraft purchased by Trans-Canada Air Lines. The L-10A aircraft type operated TCA’s inaugural flight on September 1, 1937, a 50-minute trip from Vancouver to Seattle carrying mail and two passengers.

TCA had acquired the route plus two Lockheed Lโ€10A aircraft from Canadian Airways. In that same month, TCA bought three additional Lockheed Lโ€10A aircraft, brand new, from the Lockheed factory for $73,000 each. These aircraft were dubbed the “Three Sisters” and carried the registrations CFโ€TCA, CFโ€TCB, and CFโ€TCC. The first aircraft, CFโ€TCA is now at the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa. CF-TCC last flew in 2018, and was one of two remaining Lockheed Lโ€10A Electra aircraft still flying in the world.

After being operated by TCA from 1937 to 1939, CFโ€TCC was sold to the Department of Transport โ€“ Canada. During the next 40 years, the aircraft was sold several times to various private corporations and individuals.

In 1962, CF-TCC was leased by TCA and six of the original TCA pilots operated a commemorative flight across Canada on the occasion of TCAs 25th Anniversary.

In 1975, a retired Air Canada employee recognized the faded old registration marks on the aircraft while attending an air show in Texas. Air Canada kept track of the aircraft until 1983, at which point the airline purchased back the aircraft, restored it, and flew it during the Air Canada 50th Anniversary celebrations in 1986. At the end of the Fifty stop Canadian tour, CFโ€TCC was featured in the Air Canada pavilion during Expo 86 in Vancouver.

Since 1986, the aircraft has been maintained in flying condition. Volunteersย and support from the broader aviation community, including fromย Air Canada Maintenance and Flight Operations, over the years haveย dedicated thousandsย of hours of personal timeย and other contributionsย into keeping CFโ€TCC flying for generations to enjoy. When not flying, the aircraft has been based in the Western Canada Aviation Museum in Winnipeg, Manitoba, or stored in Air Canada’s Winnipeg hangar.

On September 21, 2007, it recreated TCA’s first flight from Vancouver to Seattle, marking Air Canada’s 70th Anniversary.

In 2012, as part of Air Canada’s 75th Anniversary Celebrations, CFโ€TCC made several air show and public appearances, showcasing Air Canada’s heritage and the history of commercial aviation in Canada.

In 2017 to mark the carrier’s 80th anniversary, Air Canada’s Lockheed 10A took to the skies for a cross country tour, beginning with a public appearance at the Royal Aviation Museum in Winnipeg. Along the way, the aircraft made stops in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Toronto, Ottawa, Halifax, Quebec City.

In 2022, on occasion of Air Canada’s 85thย anniversary, the airline’s Lockheed 10A made its final journey to the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada in Winnipeg. CF-TCC was taxied to the Museum from Air Canada’s Hangarย by the aircraft’sย long-timeย advocates and volunteers, Retiredย Captain Robertย Giguere, Retired Captain Gerry Norberg, Retired Aircraft Maintenance Engineer George Huntington, and Air Canada Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Mike Clarkson.
