Etihad Airways has announced the suspension of its Abu Dhabi โ€“ Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) route effective March 25, 2018, as it will become commercially unsustainable following American Airlinesโ€™ unilateral decision to terminate its codeshare agreement with the airline.

Peter Baumgartner, Etihad Airways Chief Executive Officer, said: โ€œThe unfortunate decision by American Airlines to terminate a commercial relationship that benefited both carriers has left Etihad with no choice but to suspend flights between our Abu Dhabi home and Dallas/Fort Worth.

โ€œWe are open to American Airlines reversing its decision to cancel our codeshare agreement so that Etihad Airways can continue the route and together protect and support American national interests and global connectivity while driving commercial value for both airlines.โ€

Etihad Airways has invested heavily in the DFW route since its launch in December 2014. The route commenced with three flights a week and was upgraded to a daily service in February 2017, providing travellers in the US and across the airlineโ€™s network with access to more US cities through American Airlinesโ€™ primary hub. More than 235,000 travellers have flown on the route since its launch. Almost half of Etihad Airwaysโ€™ DFW customers connect on US codeshare flights operated by American Airlines.

Mr Baumgartner added, โ€œThe cancellation of the Dallas route is one of several adjustments that we are making to our US network in 2018 in order to improve system profitability. Further changes are possible as we monitor the full impact of the American Airlines codeshare cancellation on summer 2018 bookings.

โ€œEtihad Airways is grateful to the state of Texas, its authorities, including the Mayorโ€™s offices in Dallas and Fort Worth, DFW International Airport, local businesses, the travel trade, and the travelling public for their partnership throughout the years of our operation.โ€

Etihad Airways currently operates 42 nonstop flights a week to five US gateways โ€“ Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York and Washington. Additionally, Etihad Cargo operates twice weekly Boeing 777F freighter services to and from Rickenbacker International Airport in Columbus, Ohio, and Tucson, Arizona.

Representing a welcome first for the franchise, the Fast & Furious 777 will fly the direct route between Abu Dhabi and Los Angeles, which Etihad Airways opened in June 2014. The airline is also a sponsor of the Furious 7 world premiere, which takes place in Los Angeles on April 1.

As the United Arab Emirates offered an opportunity to inject striking elements and locales into the series’ mythology, Abu Dhabi became a key location for the Furious 7 production. Over the course of two weeks in April 2014, the team lensed in areas outside Abu Dhabi in the Liwa Desert, as well as in the city center at such locations as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Emirates Palace hotel, the Yas Marina F1 race circuit and the Etihad Towers. Considering Abu Dhabi’s striking skylineโ€”one accentuated with stunning architectural achievementsโ€”aerial shots of the skyscrapers were mandatory.

The Fast & Furious decal will remain on the plane for the next four to six months.

Etihad Airways to increase the Dallas/Fort Worth route to daily service due to high demand

Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi) will increase the frequency of its new service to Dallas/Fort Worth to daily from April 16, 2015, to meet the demand from business and leisure travellers on the ultra-long-haul route.

Dallas/Fort Worth will be introduced into Etihad Airwaysโ€™ global route network on December 3, 2014 with an initial three flights per week service, prior to the upgrade. It is the airlineโ€™s sixth route in the United States, alongside New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco, which launches on November 18, 2014.

A Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft will be operated on the route, offering a total of eight seats in First Class, 40 seats in Business Class, and 177 seats in Economy Class.
