Ryanair responds to Lufthansa’s claims about Laudamotion

Laudamotion Airbus A320-214 OE-LOE (msn 4269) FRA (Marcelo F. De Biasi). Image: 941409.

Ryanair on July 13 confirmed that Lufthansa Group is making false claims about Laudamotion.

Lufthansaโ€™s claim that it has โ€œfully complied with all requirements of the European Commission regarding the required transfer of aircraft to Laudamotionโ€ is simply untrue. Lufthansa agreed to transfer 11 aircraft to Laudamotion, yet as of July 13, Lufthansa has only delivered 9 aircraft.

1. One of the aircraft, which was supposed to be delivered โ€œat the beginningโ€ of June, has now been delayed until at least the end of August, which means Laudamotion has lost the benefit of this aircraft (and its slots) during the peak summer months.

2. Not alone has Lufthansa failed to honor its obligations to lease the 11 aircraft, but the lease costs of the aircraft it has leased to Laudamotion are substantially higher than market rates for Airbus A320โ€™s of this age.

3. Laudamotion has repeatedly honored both its aircraft lease payments and maintenance reserves to Lufthansa. Lufthansaโ€™s claims of โ€œrepeated failureโ€ to pay is false.

4. Lufthansa has used every tactic in the book to harm and damage Laudamotion including withdrawing flying business from Laudamotion (which Lufthansa had originally agreed) then refusing to pay over โ‚ฌ1.5m of lease payments properly due to Laudamotion for flying carried out on behalf of Lufthansa in March, April and May.

Despite Lufthansa owing Laudamotion over โ‚ฌ1.5m in overdue lease payments for the months of March, April and May, Lufthansa has attempted to terminate all 9 aircraft leases on unfounded legal grounds, even though lease rentals for the full month of July had already been paid at the end of June.

Ryanairโ€™s Juliusz Komorek said:

โ€œLufthansa is abusing its dominant position in the German and Austrian markets in a blatant attempt to eliminate a much smaller, Austrian competitor, Laudamotion. Lufthansaโ€™s attempt to terminate Laudamotionโ€™s 9 aircraft leases during the peak of the summer period, at a time which would cause maximum damage to Laudamotion and its customers, is in breach of its obligations to the EU.

Lufthansa dominates the German, Austrian, and Swiss markets and the fact that it is now abusing this position to try to remove Laudamotionโ€™s aircraft fleet, while refusing to pay Laudamotion lease payments that are months overdue, is in flagrant breach of fair procedure and competition rules. It is Lufthansa who has repeatedly failed to pay Laudamotion over โ‚ฌ1.5m of lease payments for March, April and May.โ€

With the addition of the new service, Alaska now operates 15 flights a day to JFK from six West Coast gateways including Las Vegas; Los Angeles; Portland, Oregon; San Francisco; San Jose; and Seattle. The new route builds on Alaska Airlines’ largest network growth in the company’s 85-year history and solidifies Alaska as the leading airline of nonstop flights from the West Coast.

With the addition of this new and expanded JFK service,ย Alaskaย provides 38 daily flights to 19 nonstop destinations from San Jose.

Timed with the flight expansion, Alaska’s newest Lounge is now open on the mezzanine level of Terminal 7 at JFK, offering a warm, welcoming experience with multiple seating areas, handcrafted espresso and full-leaf tea beverages, complimentary fresh foods, and a wide-selection of microbrews, West Coast wines and signature cocktails. Alaska is the only domestic carrier to offer all paid First Class guests complimentary access to the lounge, and the first domestic lounge to introduce a full menu of barista-pulled handcrafted espresso beverages.

Summary of new service:

Alaskaย gates and the Alaska Lounge are located in the same terminal as Global Partners British Airways and Icelandair, providing guests traveling through JFK with convenient access to a combined 10 daily flights to top global destinations acrossย Europe.ย Members of Alaska Mileage Plan can travel and earn miles to more than 900 destinations around the globe through a unique network of international partners, with many flying out of JFK.

easyJet (Europe) Airbus A320-214 OE-IZU (msn 4013) ZRH (Andi Hiltl). Image: 942513.

easyJet welcomed its 300th aircraft, an Airbus A320-214, into the fleet on June 21 on the new route between Berlin-Tegel and Cologne/Bonn airport. This is also the 111th aircraft with an Austrian AOC (easyJet Europe).

The aircraft is a former airberlin aircraft that has been converted and transferred into the easyJet fleet and marks a milestone in the airlineยดs recent expansion in Germany. With the 300th aircraft delivery 10 of the 18 aircraft based in Berlin-Tegel are now easyJet planes, alongside the aircraft that have been wet leased to support the flying schedule from Tegel during the transition period until November 2018.

The new route between Berlin-Tegel and Cologne/Bonn is part of easyJetยดs biggest summer schedule for Berlin with more than 16 million seats flying over the summer season. Flights will operate twice a day and the frequency will be increased to six daily connections by September 2018, with fares starting from โ‚ฌ39.99*. With the comprehensive network of key European and domestic cities with convenient, frequent flights, easyJet is growing the number of business passengers with 75% of the DAX 30 signed up to corporate travel deals and that is set to increase further.

In other news,ย easyJet is celebrating a milestone for expansion at its Belfast base, welcoming a thirdย Airbus A320 aircraft – the sixth aircraft to be positioned at the airlineโ€™s Northern Ireland base.

The 186-seat aircraft will remain based in Belfast throughout the year and joins three 156-seat Airbus A319 and two 186-seat A320 aircraft serving the airlineโ€™s customers in Northern Ireland. Due to the volume of inbound easyJet flights at Belfast International Airport, the addition of this aircraft means that the airline offers capacity equivalent to up to 13 aircraft.

June 22, 2018 also marks the launch of the latest routes to join easyJetโ€™s Belfast network with first flights to the Isle of Man and Venice taking off on June 22, followed by flights to Naples and Valencia which launch on ย June 23. The airline now operates up to 624 flights a week across 32 routes and 8% more flights compared to summer 2017.

  • Flights to the Isle of Man operate twice a week throughout the year
  • Flights to Venice operate twice a week throughout the yea
  • Flights to Naples operate twice a week throughout the summer season
  • Flights to Valencia operate twice a week throughout the summer season

Brussels Airlines submits new offer to its pilot community focusing on work life balance and remuneration package

Brussels Airlines' 2018 "Aerosmurf" logo jet

Brussels Airlines has issued this statement:

The Brussels Airlines management and union delegates have worked together intensively the past weeks to further improve the working conditions of the airlineโ€™s pilot community. Today, the airline and its social partners have discussed the proposal that will be submitted to the Brussels Airlines pilots for referendum in the coming days.

The current proposal is the result of a joint working group that mainly focussed on the improvement of the current duty and rest time rules and other measures further enhancing the work life balance of the pilots, as well as a compensation plan.

The new proposal represents an important investment both financially as well as in terms of resources for the company and answers to the majority of the concerns of the Brussels Airlines cockpit community.

Based on the proposal made, Brussels Airlines hopes that an agreement can be reached.

In other news,ย Brussels Airlines welcomed 5.3% more passengers inย May, compared to the same period last year. The growth was projected to be higher, but two days of social actions forced the airline to cancel 557 flights. Nevertheless, compared to the same month last year, the number of passengers traveling with Brussels Airlines rose from 839,320 to 883,784.

Compared to the same month last year, Brussels Airlines performed 7.3% less flights in May. The decrease in flights is caused by the social actions of the airlineโ€™s pilots on May 14th and May 16th, causing the cancellation of 557 flights. However, the number of passengers traveling on a Brussels Airlines flight rose by 5.3% compared to May 2017.

On the European network the airline registered a passenger growth of 4.8%, while the number of passengers travelling on North American flights rose by 1.3%. Compared to the same month last year, 2.7% more customers have chosen Brussels Airlines for flights to and from the Middle East. The strongest increase was noted on the African network, where 14.1% more guests boarded a Brussels Airlines flight. The number of people traveling with Brussels Airlines to Asia decreased by 13.2%, due to a lower flight offer. In May 2018 the airline operated 40 flights to Mumbai, compared to 44 flights in May 2017.

Despite the decrease in operated flights, the Available Seat-Kilometers (ASK) increased by 3.9%, due to the replacement of the last AVRO jets (100 seats) by bigger Airbus aircraft (180 seats). The Passenger Load Factor climbed up from 76.5% in May last year to 80.3% in May 2018. Thanks to its increased offer, Brussels Airlines was able to continue offering competitive fares and attract even more customers. This means, however, that the pressure on the ticket prices remains very high.

The Cargo Load Factor increased by 4.3 percentage points to an average of 69.7%, while the Revenue Ton-Kilometers (RTK) grew by 11.0%. The transported cargo volume amounted to 4,446 tons.
