EASA suspends all Boeing 737 MAX operations in Europe, a total shutdown

Europe is now closed to all Boeing 737-8 MAX 8 and Boeing 737-9 MAX 9 operations. EASA has issued this statement:

Following the tragic accident of Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 involving a Boeing 737 MAX 8, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is taking every step necessary to ensure the safety of passengers.

As a precautionary measure, EASA has published today (March 12) an Airworthiness Directive, effective as of 19:00 UTC, suspending all flight operations of all Boeing Model 737-8 MAX and 737-9 MAX airplanes in Europe. In addition EASA has published a Safety Directive, effective as of 19:00 UTC, suspending all commercial flights performed by third-country operators into, within or out of the EU of the above mentioned models.

The accident investigation is led by the Ethiopian Authorities with the support of the National Transportation Safety Board, as the aircraft was designed and built in the United States. EASA has offered their assistance in supporting the accident investigation.

EASA is continuously analysing the data as it becomes available. The accident investigation is currently ongoing, and it is too early to draw any conclusions as to the cause of the accident.

Turkish Airlines takes delivery of its first Boeing 737-9 MAX 9

Turkish Airlines on March 1, 2019 quietly took delivery of TC-LYA (msn 60062), its first Boeing 737-9 MAX 9.

Turkish Airlines previously finalized a firm order for 40 737 MAX 8s, 10 737 MAX 9s and 20 Next-Generation 737-800 jets.

BOC Aviation delivers the first Boeing 737-9 MAX 9 aircraft to Icelandair

BOC Aviation Limited has announced that it has delivered its first Boeing 737-9 MAX 9 aircraft to its newest customer, Icelandair. The aircraft will be powered by CFM LEAP-1B Engines.

The pictured Boeing 737-9 MAX 9 TF-ICA (msn 44357) was officially handed over on February 22, 2019.

SCAT Airlines orders two new Boeing 737-9 MAX 9s

SCAT Airlines (SCAT Air Company) has announced it has concluded an additional contract to acquire two new Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft.

The two MAX 9s will arrive in Kazakhstan in May 2019, direct from Boeing, and will be operated in the summer flight schedule. The new planes will operate domestic and international flights.

Aircraft cabins will accommodate 189 seats, including 16 business class seats.

The airline currently operates the MAX 8.

Alaska to introduce the new MAX 9 on July 15

Alaska Airlines is planning to introduce its new Boeing 737-9 MAX 9 on two routes in July, 2019.

According to Airline Route, the carrier will introduce the MAX 9 from the Seattle/Tacoma hub to both Los Angeles and San Jose, CA on July 15, 2019.

The new type will also be introduced a month later on the Seattle/Tacoma – San Diego route on August 15, 2019.

As previously reported, Alaska Airlines converted 15 Boeing 737-8 MAX 8s on order to the larger 737-9 MAX 9. This brings its MAX 9 total on order to 32.

Alaska initially ordered 20 737 MAX 8s, 17 737 MAX 9s and 13 Next-Generation 737-900ERs.

Samoa Airways to lease a new Boeing 737-9 MAX 9 from ALC

Samoa Airways and Air Lease Corporation (ALC) have signed a memorandum of understanding in Apia, for the lease placement of one new Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft.

Scheduled for delivery in late March, the aircraft, which will be delivered direct from Boeing in Seattle Washington, will replace the National Carrier’s existing 737-800.

The MOU was signed by the Prime Minister, Honourable Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, Samoa Airways Chairman Feesago Siaosi Fepuleai and ALC Executive Chairman Steven Hazy.

The airplane will feature the new Boeing Sky Interior, highlighted by modern sculpted sidewalls and window reveals, LED lighting that enhances the sense of spaciousness and larger overhead stowage bins.

The MAX’s technological advances plus its powerful LEAP-1B engines are redefining the future of efficient and environmentally friendly air travel.

Samoa Airways is set to become the first airline in the South Pacific Region including New Zealand and Australia to operate the new Boeing 737 MAX 9.

The new aircraft will be configured with 16 Business Class seats and 173 seats in Economy Class, and will operate between Apia, Auckland, Sydney and Brisbane.

United Airlines reports full-year and fourth quarter 2018 financial results

United Airlines has released this report:

In a departure from industry trends, United (UAL) has announced that its fourth-quarter unit revenue came in at the high end of its guidance range and also exceeded its full-year adjusted diluted earnings per share target laid out last January.

UAL reported full-year net income of $2.1 billion, diluted earnings per share of $7.70 (a 9.1 percent increase year-over-year), pre-tax earnings of $2.7 billion and pre-tax margin of 6.4 percent. UAL reported adjusted full-year net income of $2.5 billion, adjusted pre-tax earnings of $3.2 billion and adjusted pre-tax margin of 7.7 percent.¹UAL increased its full-year 2018 adjusted diluted earnings per share outlook three times during the year despite a $2.4 billion year-over-year headwind from fuel. Full-year adjusted diluted earnings per share increased 33.5 percent year-over-year to $9.13, above the high end of the company’s most recent guidance range.¹

For 2019, UAL expects adjusted diluted earnings per share to again grow year-over-year to between $10.00 to $12.00.²

UAL reported fourth-quarter net income of $462 million, diluted earnings per share of $1.70, pre-tax earnings of $556 million and pre-tax margin of 5.3 percent.
UAL reported fourth-quarter adjusted net income of $657 million, adjusted diluted earnings per share of $2.41 and adjusted pre-tax earnings of $814 million.
UAL reported fourth-quarter adjusted pre-tax margin of 7.8 percent,¹ expanding margin on an adjusted basis of 0.9 points versus the fourth-quarter of 2017.
UAL recovered 98% percent of the year-over-year increase in fuel prices in 2018.
Consolidated fourth-quarter passenger revenue per available seat mile (PRASM) increased 5 percent year-over-year, at the high end of the company’s fourth-quarter 2018 guidance range.
Consolidated fourth-quarter unit cost per available seat mile (CASM) increased 7.0 percent year-over-year.
Consolidated fourth-quarter CASM, excluding special charges, third-party business expenses, fuel and profit sharing, decreased 0.7 percent year-over-year.
Employees earned $334 million in profit sharing for 2018.

Employees

Employees earned incentive payments totaling approximately $14 million for achieving operational performance goals in the quarter, marking a full year of earned incentive payments totaling $55 million.
Introduced and trained over 90,000 team members on UAL’s new customer service decision framework, the core4, which focuses on the principles of safe, caring, dependable and efficient.
Deployed 6,000 iPads to maintenance employees, improving reliability and efficiency.
Unveiled a state-of-the-art flight training center in Denver, Colorado – the largest in the world and home to the company’s more than 30 full flight simulators representing all of UAL’s fleet types.
Successfully completed the full implementation of the flight attendant joint collective bargaining agreement, allowing the company to operate more efficiently and reliably.
Achieved the top score of 100 percent on the 2018 Disability Equality Index (DEI), a prominent benchmarking metric that rates U.S. companies on their disability inclusion policies and practices, also earning UAL a place on DEI’s 2018 “Best Places to Work” list.

Network

Introduced 93 new routes, adding more flights in 2018 than any other U.S. airline.

Took delivery of 21 new Boeing aircraft, including four 777-300ER, four 787-9, three 787-10 and ten 737 MAX 9 aircraft (top photo).
