Russian missile hits a building at Boryspil Airport in Kyiv

A Russian missile was fired at and hit a building located at Boryspil Airport (KBP), the main airport for Kyiv.

Russia attacks Ukraine, launches missiles and planes, including Boryspil Airport in Kyiv

A sad day is dawning in Europe. Aviation will be impacted. Airports in Ukraine are being attacked by Russia.

From the BBC:

“The Ukrainian armed forces has posted a statement saying that Russian military began “intensive shelling” of its units in the east of the country.

Russia also launched missile strikes on Boryspil Airport (above) near Kyiv and several other airports, the statement said.

It said the Ukrainian air force is fighting off an air attack by Russia.

The statement denied reports about Russian paratroops in the southern port city of Odesa.”

A further BBC report about Ukrainian airspace:

“Ukrainian state air traffic services has closed the country’s airspace as the country comes under attack.

It suspended all flights at 02:45 Kyiv time (00.45 GMT) “due to the high risk of aviation safety for civil aviation”.

It added: “The provision of air traffic services to civilian users of the airspace of Ukraine is suspended.”

Ryanair says it has cancelled all flights to and from Ukraine for at least the next 14 days.”

Boryspil Airport issued this statement (translated):

We would like to inform you that the work of Boryspil International Airport has been suspended. The airport is closed, all passengers at the airport have been evacuated, and the runway is blocked. Airport services work in cooperation with government agencies in accordance with the instructions and current legislation of Ukraine.

CNN is reporting airports in southern Russia are also closed:

“In contraction with the difficult situation around Ukraine, from the 24th of February at 3.45am Moscow time, flights in a number of airports in the South of Russia have been suspended,” the statement read.

The restrictions will be in effect until March 2, according to the aviation authorities.

Flights are suspended at airports in:

  • Rostov, Krasnodar, Anapa, Gelendzhik, Elista, Stavropol, Belgorod, Bryansk, Oryol, Kursk, Voronezh and Simferopol, Crimea.

Ukraine International to launch service to New York (JFK) on April 25

Ukraine International Airlines (Kiev) despite the current political turmoil in the Ukraine, will launch its first ever nonstop service from Kiev (Boryspil International airport) to New York (John Kennedy International Airport) on April 25, 2014. Starting June 23, 2014, Kiev – New York nonstop scheduled flights will be operated daily.
