British Airways looks back at the changes during 2018

British Airways has released this statement:

With 2018 drawing to a close, British Airways is celebrating flying high in the last 12 months with additional investment for customers now totaling ยฃ6.5 bn. ย Hereโ€™s a recap of whatโ€™s changed at British Airways over the last year.

Network and new fares

In 2018 the airline offered its most extensive choice of flights in more than a decade, with more than a dozen new routes, including Marrakech, Durban, Nashville and the Seychelles. More new routes have been announced for 2019, including Charleston, Pittsburgh and Osaka.

Customers travelling light were able to take advantage of the airlineโ€™s new long-haul basic fare on routes to the US and around the world, with fares from ยฃ143. They can reduce this cost even further by using their Avios.

18 new aircraft for 2018

For 2018 British Airways introduced 18 new fuel-efficient aircraft to its fleet of almost 300 planes โ€“ including its 30th 787, plus A320 and 21neos, and Embraer for BA CityFlyer.ย  The airlineโ€™s 767 fleet was retired to make way for more new aircraft, arriving next year.

Work continued at pace to refresh existing long-haul cabins โ€“ with all seats being equipped with state-of-the-art entertainment systems and direct access to power.

Technology

During 2018, British Airways began installing its industry-leading streamingย WiFiย on long-haul aircraft โ€“ย  all short-haul aircraft will be fitted with the system by next summer.ย ย This exciting development allows customers to use their own devices to live stream TV programmes and movies.

The airlineโ€™s website, BA.com, received a refresh and achieved record sales. There were enhancements for the hugely popular BA app, including adding Appleโ€™s Siri voice service on the iPhone. A new reward app was also released to help British Airwaysโ€™ Executive Club members discover new ways to collect and spend Avios –ย  including selecting seats on flights, as well as spending on flights, car hire, hotels, excursions, etc.

The airline is focused on providing customers with a seamless and efficient journey through the airport. Throughout the year it continued to pioneer facial recognition airport technology. British Airways was the first airline to install biometric technology at Heathrow โ€“ enabling it to board domestic (UK) flights in half the usual time.ย ย It also began using the same technology to speedily board aircraft in Orlando, Los Angeles, New York and Miami.

Departing on time is important to customers, and as such, the airline became the first to introduce remote-controlled devices to push back aircraft, helping it to maintain its status asย theย most punctual of the three-big short-haul carriers flying from London, and reducing pushback delays by more than 70 percent. Trials are now underway on long-haul aircraft.

Premium service

The airline completed its roll-out of The White Company bedding in Club World, and announced that a new, larger seat would be launched for the cabin in 2019, on its A350 aircraft. It opened new lounges in Aberdeen, Rome and New Yorkโ€™s JFK. And the carrierโ€™s millionth customer was welcomed through its First Wing, reminiscent of a luxury hotel lobby, with dedicated security lanes and direct access to the First lounge.ย ย The team in the airlineโ€™s Concorde Lounge continued to work with the experts in customer service at the Dorchester Hotel to provide outstanding assistance to customers.

The airline also improved its connections service – doubling the number of cars offering premium customers on tight connections a chauffeur driven ride to their next flight.ย ย  Dedicated connections managers now fast-track customers through to their next flight, or re-book them onto another flight and organize a hotel if needed, all while theyโ€™re still in the air.

Dining

British Airways announced an extension to its partnership withย Do&Co, the premier provider of fine dining in the skies, for all flights departing from Heathrow.

It also launched a multi-million pounds investment in its World Traveller catering and fine dining in Club World cabins.

On short-haul the carrier invested in Club Europe, with new menus and improved recipes, and regularly updated M&S menus for customers travelling in Euro Traveller.

Customer Service

The airline became the first in Europe to start training its airport hosts at Heathrow Terminal 5 to handle a multitude of customer issues, around bookings, re-booking, upgrades, baggage and transfer queries and flight information.

Alongside this, it opened the only family check-in zone in the UK,ย and delivered staff training, to allow the 50,000 customers with hidden or visible disabilities to travel more comfortably.

At Heathrow Terminal 3 British Airways enhanced its our operation, with a new control room and flight connection centre to further improve punctuality.

On top of all of this, Skytrax voted British Airwaysโ€™ cabin crew the best in the UK in 2018.

Partnerships

The airline celebrated raising ยฃ20m for its Flying Start charity partnership with Comic Relief.

British Airways was proud to fly Team GB and Paralympics GB to Korea for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics, and Team UK to the Invictus Games in Sydney.

It formed partnerships with top-ranking British tennis player Kyle Edmund, England Rugby, and Twickenham.

It announced that Savile Row tailor and fashion designer,ย Ozwaldย Boateng, is to design a new uniform for 32,000 staff.

To celebrate International Womensโ€™ Day, the airline put on an all-female flight, which you can watch again here.

British Airways welcomed 600 work experience students to give them an idea of what itโ€™s like to work for an airline and held special events to encourage more girls to consider a career flying aircraft.

The programme will see them gain qualifications in English, Maths and Digital skills, access to a dedicated mobile app to track their progress and continuous development coaching from a certified apprenticeship coach.

British Airways operates the last Boeing 767-300 revenue flight

Type Retired: November 25, 2018 (flight BA 663 between Larnaca and London Heathrow with G-BZHA)

British Airways last night (November 25), as planned, operated the last Boeing 767-300 revenue flight (flight BA 663) between Larnaca (LCA) and London (Heathrow).

According to FlightAware, flight BA 663 arrived at LHR at 2234 (10:34 pm) with the pictured G-BZHA.

British Airways introduced the type in 1990. G-BNWB was the first to arrive on February 8, 1990. BA has been gradually retiring the type since 2013 and was down to two aircraft at the end.

British Airways issued this statement:

  • 767 first entered fleet in 1990, flying over 425,000 commercial flights
  • Last commercial flight took place yesterday, Larnaca โ€“ Heathrow, before being retired to St Athan in Wales today
  • Retirement comes just days after airline takes delivery of 30th 787 Dreamliner

British Airways today bids farewell to one of the most iconic aircraft in its fleet, the Boeing 767. The airlineโ€™s final two 767s are being retired to St Athan in Wales after the last commercial flight – Larnaca in Cyprus to Heathrow โ€“ took place yesterday (November 25).

Since British Airways operated its first 767 in February 1990 on a short hop to Paris, the fleet of aircraft have completed over 425,000 commercial flights.ย Frankfurt was the route where enthusiasts could spot the 767 most frequently, with the aircraft completing nearly 15,000 flights to and from the airport, but the aircraft has also been used to serve routes from Abu Dhabi, to Calgary and New York. While it was initially used for long-haul, in recent years it has been reconfigured for use on short-haul, including to Athens and Larnaca as well as on some domestic routes.

The retirement comes as British Airways looks to the future of its fleet. Just days ago, the airline took delivery of its 30th Boeing 787 Dreamliner โ€“ the newest aircraft in its fleet. Not only is the Dreamliner around 40 per cent quieter than other aircraft it also uses 20 per cent less fuel than similarly sized aircraft. This means a reduction in carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions. But itโ€™s not just the 787 being added to British Airwaysโ€™ fleet. Later in the year the airline will take delivery of another pioneering aircraft – its first Airbus A350, part of the airlineโ€™s ยฃ4.5bn investment for customers over the next five years.

On the 767 retirement, British Airways Director of Flight Operations, Captain Al Bridger, said: โ€œThe 767 has been a brilliant part of our fleet, flying some of our most popular routes and giving customers what was an industry-leading service in its time. Itโ€™s fitting that as the final 767 leaves the fleet, we take our 30th delivery of another industry-leading aircraft, the 787, which offers customers an exceptional experience in the skies.โ€

The final 767 commercial flight took place on aircraft registration G-BZHA. This aircraft first flew in 1998 and has flown an estimated 23 million miles. It has visited Larnaca 900 times in its life, but its most popular route is actually to Athens, where itโ€™s completed 1,275 round trips. It is estimated that this aircraft has carried around 4 million customers across nearly 23,000 flights.

British to increase the London Heathrow – Inverness schedule

British Airways is to significantly expand its service between Heathrow and Inverness by operating two daily return services from Monday to Friday and three return services at weekends from summer 2019.

The increased schedule means that, for the first time since the Heathrow to Invernessroute was reinstated in 2016, an aircraft will be parked overnight at Inverness Airport and British Airways customers will be able to travel between the two cities, complete a full working day, and return home the very same day.

From March 31, 2019 the number of weekly flights the airline operates between the two cities during the summer season will increase from 10 to 16. The winter flying programme between Heathrow Terminal 5 and Inverness will see a doubling from seven to 14 return services a week, with the airline operating a double-daily schedule every day of the week from October 27, 2019.

Flights have also been re-timed to improve onward connections on to British Airwaysโ€™ global network of more than 150 destinations worldwide. Flights are available to book on ba.com, with each-way fares starting from ยฃ115 per person in Club Europe and ยฃ34 in Euro Traveller*.

British Airways is investing ยฃ4.5 billion for customers, including the installation of the best quality WiFi and power in every seat, fitting 128 long-haul aircraft with new interiors and taking delivery of 72 new aircraft.ย  The airline is also making a multi-million-pound investment in its short haul business class cabin, Club Europe. The spend is part of the airlineโ€™s current ยฃ4.5bn investment plan and will focus on enhanced food and drink.
