Brussels Airlines opens a โ€œboutique hotel in the airโ€ for long-haul travel

Brussels Airlines has revealed a brand new travel experience on board of its long-haul aircraft. By investing 10 million euro per aircraft in a completely new Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy Class the airline wants to offer a personal experience, recreating a boutique hotel feel at 30,000 feet. The interior was designed in collaboration with JPA Design.

Brussels Airlines aims to make the journey as important as the destination. With three new highly differentiated classes with quality products and the typical Belgian hospitality, the airline calls its newly introduced and retrofitted Airbus A330 aircraft โ€œa boutique hotel in the airโ€, offering the same small scale personal experience as one finds in a boutique hotel. To translate its boutique aspirations into reality, Brussels Airlines has worked with JPA Design to design the brand new Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy Class.

The Belgian touch

Premium-quality material such as wood and leather have always been important when it comes to Belgian design. Belgian Art Nouveau and Victor Horta were the inspiration for the new A330 cabin interior. The dome light of the ceiling in the boarding area features an elegant Art Nouveau design. All seats feature rich 3D textured fabric, inspired by famous Belgian designers like Dries Van Noten.

As culinary excellence is key to Belgians, Brussels Airlines teams up with a Belgian Star Chef every year to design the Business Class menuโ€™s on its long-haul flights. With its new cabin the airline also brings the Belgian beer and bar culture to the sky, by including a self-service bar in its aircraft and offering a varying choice of 8 famous Belgian beers to all guests. Next to that, Belgian wines, coffee and premium Belgian chocolates from Neuhaus are personally served by the airlineโ€™s warm and friendly crew.

ย โ€œAt Brussels Airlines we are continuously working on improving the comfort for our guests on board as well as on the ground. With this significant investment in our long-haul travel experience, we emphasize once more on our commitment towards an exceptional passenger experience. The experience delivered by the finest boutique hotels has been the source of inspiration for our new Intercontinental Business Class. We want to be the most personal airline, give a personal service to every guest and offer everyone the warm hospitality Belgium is known for. And that is exactly the essence of a boutique hotel, offering a world-class service in a small scale environment. The comparison of our aircraft โ€“ especially on the long haul โ€“ with a boutique hotel makes a lot of sense.โ€

Christina Foerster โ€“ CEO Brussels Airlines

“It has been an absolute joy to collaborate with such a characterful combination of the Brussels Airlines brand & Belgium itself. Both have a genuinely unique โ€˜joie de vivreโ€™ and with such great design culture to draw on it has been a fun and enjoyable project to deliver. The new cabins reflect aย  ’boutique hotel in the sky’, which captures the warmth and friendliness of the Brussels Airlines brand, whilst perfectly melding JPA Design’s experience in creating hospitality and aviation interiors. Together, we’ve created a harmonious ambiance for a personalised & warm service, and the result takes the airlineโ€™s guest-experience to new levels.โ€œย ย

Business Class, a boutique hotel feel with an Art Nouveau signature

The new Business Class brings a boutique hotel atmosphere with a classy Belgian design, far from a traditional Business Class. Throughout the whole cabin design, Art Nouveau patterns reflect the premium Belgian hospitality and bring a sophisticated and relaxed atmosphere on board, consistent with what the airline offers its Business Class guests on the ground in their flagship lounge โ€˜The Loftโ€™ at Brussels Airport. The carpet pattern is inspired by the vault design of historical Antwerp central station while famous Belgian designers like Dries Van Noten were an inspiration for the design of the seat fabric.

Thanks to its small size of only 30 seats and its unique staggered configuration, the new Business Class offers great privacy in every seat. Guests can choose between a single and a double seat depending on whether they are travelling alone or with a companion. Completely adaptable to every guestโ€™s need the new Business seat can be converted to a lounge sofa or a 2m long full flat bed with adjustable softness. This combined with the new lighting ambiance tailored to all flight phases, ensures a rejuvenating sleep for jet lag-free flying across time zones. Furthermore, the 15.6โ€ HD screen can be tilted to adapt to all seating positions and includes high-quality noise-cancelling headphones.

Guests travelling in the new Business Class can indulge in a fine culinary experience. International wines & Laurent Perrier Champagne from Brussels Airlinesโ€™ award winning wine cellar selected by Master of Wine Fiona Morrison, accompany a four-course gastronomic meal created by a Belgian Michelin Star Chef. This year itโ€™s Thierry Theys from restaurant Nuance who serves his menus on board. On top of the fine dining experience, Brussels Airlines brings for the first time ever a Belgian walk-up bar on board, located just behind the Business Class cabin, offering famous Belgian beers as well as a place to network with fellow Business Class travellers.

Premium Economy, the most relaxing experience

With its new long-haul travel experience, Brussels Airlines also launches a brand new travel class. The new Premium Economy Class is completely separated from the other classes, creating a quiet and relaxed environment with soft purple and blue colours. A premium seat with increased private space, comfortable cushioning and an expanded armrest allow to travel undisturbed. A 38โ€ seat pitch (23% more legroom compared to Economy Class), a wider seat with a bigger headrest and a generous 40ยฐ seat recline allow for a relaxing sleep. Its warm and joyful design with a red touch is a signature of the Brussels Airlines brand. The 13.3โ€ HD screen is one of the largest HD Premium Economy screens in Europe. On top of that, a large table includes AC & USB power plugs so guests can stay productive throughout their flight.

Like everywhere, Brussels Airlines offers its ever-personal service in Premium Economy, on top of an upgraded culinary experience, a water bottle and hot towel, and later during the flight ice cream as a movie snack.

Economy Class: Warm, generous and friendly

The new Economy cabin provides additional comfort for every guest. A playful design, inspired by the sunrise on the North Sea represents the warmth of Brussels Airlinesโ€™ Belgian hospitality. The new Economy seat features an ergonomic headrest offering increased privacy and adjustable neck support. A large seat recline, personal USB port and a wide choice of entertainment and games on a 10.1โ€™โ€™ screen ensure an enjoyable and relaxing flight, while each guest can enjoy a nice international meal with aperitif and complimentary beers, wines and spirits.

The first refurbished A330 will be operational in April 2019.

Brussels Airlines has issued this statement:

Based on additional information recently received about the likely scale of the national strike on February 13, Brussels Airlines now considers it very probable that operations at Brussels Airport will be severely impacted due to industrial action of various airport stakeholders. It has therefore decided to cancel the remaining 72 flights originally planned that same day and herewith cancels its entire program of 222 flights. The travel plans of more than 16,000 passengers are impacted.

With the proactive cancellation of its flight program of February 13, Brussels Airlines offers its guests the possibility to adapt their travel plans in advance and herewith minimizes the level of disruption and discomfort generated by the national strike as much as possible.

Passengers with a cancelled flight who donโ€™t wish to travel anymore, can request a full refund of their ticket.

Brussels Airlines apologizes for the inconveniences that are caused by external factors entirely beyond its control.

Brussels Airlines rejuvenates its Airbus A330 long-haul fleet

Brussels Airlines Airbus A330-301 OO-SFM (msn 030) ZRH (Paul Bannwarth). Image: 939584.

Brussels Airlines has made this announcement:

Together with Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines invests in the replacement of seven of its ten Airbus A330 long-haul aircraft. Already one aircraft (OO-SFN) left the airlineโ€™s fleet. It is the most substantial investment project in the 16-year long history of Brussels Airlines and the first time ever that the airline operates long-haul aircraft that are owned and not leased.

With the new long-haul aircraft, Brussels Airlines will be able to offer its customers even more comfort, with quieter, more efficient and environmentally friendlier planes. Besides new aircraft, the airline is also investing in an entirely new cabin interior for all three travel classes, providing guests an even higher on-board comfort and a best-in-class travel experience on all intercontinental flights to Africa and the North Atlantic. After a comprehensive study where Brussels Airlines and Lufthansa looked at the current and future intercontinental network of the Brussels based airline, as well as at its capacity need for both passengers and cargo and the available aircraft on the market, it was decided last year to go for A330-300 CEO series. From an economic and operational point of view, this aircraft type is the best fit for Brussels Airlines as it brings many benefits such as a significantly higher range than its current Airbus A330 fleet and a higher maximum take-off weight offering more freight capacity.

While Brussels Airlines is currently flying with different engine types, the โ€˜CEOโ€™ aircraft will all be equipped with Rolls Royce Trent 700 engines. This engine type that consumes less fuel and emits less noise and CO2, is already in use at several other airlines of the Lufthansa Group. Also for the Brussels Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Department, this harmonization and standardization is of an added value as it significantly reduces the complexity.

The replacement of seven of its ten A330 aircraft is the most substantial investment made in the 16-year long history of Brussels Airlines. In addition, itโ€™s the first time ever that the airline operates its long-haul flights with aircraft that are owned by the Lufthansa Group and not leased.

The very first Airbus A330 with tail number OO-SFN successfully left the Brussels Airlines fleet on November 13, 2018.

In December, the phase out of OO-SFM (top) is planned, followed by OO-SFO, OO-SFY, OO-SFV, OO-SFW and OO-SFU in the course of 2019 and 2020.

The first two new aircraft, OO-SFC and OO-SFB, have started their operationsย in June. The refleet program will gradually take place in the months to come and will be finalized by the beginning of 2020.

Brussels Airlines invests further in its Africa network, drops Mumbai

Brussels Airlines continues to invest in its position on the African market, by further reinforcing its flight offer to and from the continent.

As of next year, the airline adds 3 extra flights per week to Banjul (Gambia) and will operate 3 out of the 7 weekly frequencies to Dakar (Senegal) as a direct flight, without a stop in another African airport.

At the same time, the airline ceases its operations to and from Mumbai on January 6, 2019, but continues to offer its customers smooth travel options via Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich with Lufthansa Group partners Lufthansa and Swiss.

After a network expansion of 26 short- and medium-haul destinations this summer, Brussels Airlines invests further in its African long-haul network in winter. The airline will service Banjul (The Gambia) daily instead of 4 times a week. From the 7 weekly flights to and from Dakar, 3 flights will become direct flights, without a stop in another African airport from 7 January onwards, creating more capacity on the flights on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

Brussels Airlinesโ€™ Mumbai flights, which were launched in March 2017, will be stopped on January 6, 2019 for economic reasons, as the route does not deliver the anticipated results. At the same time, passengers still have ample alternative travel options via Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich thanks to Lufthansa Group airlines Lufthansa and SWISS. The Mumbai flight capacity will be used to refocus on Africa, the core intercontinental business of Brussels Airlines.

Customers who had booked flights to or from Mumbai after 6 January are being contacted by Brussels Airlines and are offered alternative travel solutions to get to their final destination.

On the short-haul network, Brussels Airlines adds two new destinations: as from October Kiev (Ukraine) will be served 4 times a week and as of February a 3-weekly service to Wroclaw (Poland) will be launched. Furthermore the airline adds additional frequencies to existing destinations this winter season, including Alicante, Billund, Bordeaux, Faro, Geneva, Lisbon, Malaga and Tel Aviv.

New setup for Eurowings Group; Eurowings and Brussels Airlines to have new roles

Brussels Airlines Airbus A330-343 OO-SFX (msn 1085) IAD (Brian McDonough). Image: 933802.

Eurowings Group issued this statement:

  • Brussels Airlines set to become long-haul competence center of Eurowings Group
  • Eurowings airline will be responsible for the short-haul business of the Eurowings Group
  • Eurowings Group CEO Thorsten Dirks: โ€œNew strategic setup puts us at the helm of European airline consolidationโ€

After first successes of joint projects, Eurowings and Brussels Airlines will take the next decisive steps in the integration process, defining each otherโ€™s roles within the Eurowings Group.

Taking the expertise and strengths of both entities into consideration, Brussels Airlines will become the long-haul competence center of the Eurowings Group, steering all long-haul activities of the entire group out of Brussels. Next to that, the airline will actively participate in the Eurowings Group pan-European growth strategy by becoming the operator for the expansion to other airport bases in the French- and Dutch-speaking part of Europe.

โ€œThe successful launch of Eurowings long-haul flights operated by Brussels Airlines out of Dรผsseldorf to New York, Fort Myers and Miami last April, reconfirms the long-haul expertise of the Brussels based airline,โ€ said Eurowings Group CEO Thorsten Dirks. โ€œIn only five months Eurowings and Brussels Airlines have managed to set up a long-haul base at Dรผsseldorf, strengthening the group in one of its key German airports,โ€ he added.

In parallel, Eurowings โ€“ focusing on European point-to-point traffic โ€“ will steer the entire short-haul portfolio of the Eurowings Group from Cologne.

Dirks: โ€œJoining forces with Brussels Airlines will not only strengthen our position as the #3 low-cost carrier in Europe but also spur further Eurowings Group growth in the futureโ€, specifies Thorsten Dirks.

Both airlines will continue to operate long-haul and short-haul flights out of their respective bases Brussels, Cologne, Dรผsseldorf and Vienna.

This also means that even though two competence centers are being created at Brussels and Cologne, there will remain functions for both long-haul and short-haul operations at both locations. Implementation of the new setup is planned for 2019. Eurowings Group already operates from more than 20 European bases today.

“Brussels Airlines is recognized for its expertise and for the value it adds to the Eurowings Group. We will continue building on our assets to become an even more important player within the group, while remaining Belgium’s strong home carrier and continuing to focus on our guests,” adds Christina Foerster, CEO of Brussels Airlines.

Eurowings Group CEO Thorsten Dirks is confident that this new teamwork structure under the umbrella of Eurowings Group is the right strategic step to meet future challenges. โ€œThe scattered European aviation landscape is beginning to consolidate โ€“ the new structure of Eurowings Group will make it possible for us to be at the helm of this development.โ€

Brussels Airlines submits new offer to its pilot community focusing on work life balance and remuneration package

Brussels Airlines' 2018 "Aerosmurf" logo jet

Brussels Airlines has issued this statement:

The Brussels Airlines management and union delegates have worked together intensively the past weeks to further improve the working conditions of the airlineโ€™s pilot community. Today, the airline and its social partners have discussed the proposal that will be submitted to the Brussels Airlines pilots for referendum in the coming days.

The current proposal is the result of a joint working group that mainly focussed on the improvement of the current duty and rest time rules and other measures further enhancing the work life balance of the pilots, as well as a compensation plan.

The new proposal represents an important investment both financially as well as in terms of resources for the company and answers to the majority of the concerns of the Brussels Airlines cockpit community.

Based on the proposal made, Brussels Airlines hopes that an agreement can be reached.

In other news,ย Brussels Airlines welcomed 5.3% more passengers inย May, compared to the same period last year. The growth was projected to be higher, but two days of social actions forced the airline to cancel 557 flights. Nevertheless, compared to the same month last year, the number of passengers traveling with Brussels Airlines rose from 839,320 to 883,784.

Compared to the same month last year, Brussels Airlines performed 7.3% less flights in May. The decrease in flights is caused by the social actions of the airlineโ€™s pilots on May 14th and May 16th, causing the cancellation of 557 flights. However, the number of passengers traveling on a Brussels Airlines flight rose by 5.3% compared to May 2017.

On the European network the airline registered a passenger growth of 4.8%, while the number of passengers travelling on North American flights rose by 1.3%. Compared to the same month last year, 2.7% more customers have chosen Brussels Airlines for flights to and from the Middle East. The strongest increase was noted on the African network, where 14.1% more guests boarded a Brussels Airlines flight. The number of people traveling with Brussels Airlines to Asia decreased by 13.2%, due to a lower flight offer. In May 2018 the airline operated 40 flights to Mumbai, compared to 44 flights in May 2017.

Despite the decrease in operated flights, the Available Seat-Kilometers (ASK) increased by 3.9%, due to the replacement of the last AVRO jets (100 seats) by bigger Airbus aircraft (180 seats). The Passenger Load Factor climbed up from 76.5% in May last year to 80.3% in May 2018. Thanks to its increased offer, Brussels Airlines was able to continue offering competitive fares and attract even more customers. This means, however, that the pressure on the ticket prices remains very high.

The Cargo Load Factor increased by 4.3 percentage points to an average of 69.7%, while the Revenue Ton-Kilometers (RTK) grew by 11.0%. The transported cargo volume amounted to 4,446 tons.
