Emirates Group issued this financial report:

Group records 32nd consecutive year of profit of AED 1.7 billion (US$ 456 million)

  • Group revenue of AED 104 billion (US$ 28.3 billion) impacted by planned Dubai International airport (DXB) runway closure in Q1 and COVID-19 pandemic in Q4
  • Ends year with solid cash balance of AED 25.6 billion (US$ 7.0 billion)

Emiratesย reports a profit of AEDย 1.1 billionย (US$ 288 million), 21% up from the previous year

  • Revenue declines by 6% to AED 92.0 billion (US$ 25.1 billion), impacted by planned 45 days DXB runway closure and temporary suspension of passenger flights in March
  • Airline capacity reduced to 59 billion ATKM with aircraft fleet size unchanged

dnata reports a profit of AEDย 618 million (US$ย 168ย million), which includes AED 216 million (US$ 59 million) one-time gain from sale of stake in an IT company, Accelya

  • Revenue increases by 2% to AED 14.8 billion (US$ 4.0 billion), reflecting business growth with international business accounting for 72% of revenue
  • Profit impacted by: goodwill impairments (mainly in Travel) of AED 164 million (US$ 45 million), write-offs due to Thomas Cook failure (Travel & Catering) of AED 96 million (US$ 26 million), and impact of COVID-19 (across all business divisions) AED 274 million (US$ 75 million)
  • Expands global footprint with addition of new facilities and service capabilities across its airport operations, and catering divisions

The Emirates Group today announced its 32nd consecutive year of profit, against a drop in revenue mainly attributed to reduced operations during the planned DXB runway closure in the first quarter, and the impact of flight and travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the fourth quarter.

Released today in its 2019-20 Annual Report, the Emirates Group posted a profit of AED 1.7 billion (US$ 456 million) for the financial year ended 31 March 2020, down 28% from last year. The Groupโ€™s revenue reached AED 104.0 billion (US$ 28.3 billion), a decline of 5% over last yearโ€™s results. The Groupโ€™s cash balance was AED 25.6 billion (US$ 7.0 billion), up 15% from last year mainly due to a strong business performance up to February 2020 and lower fuel cost compared to previous year.

Due to the unprecedented business environment from the ongoing pandemic, and to protect the Groupโ€™s liquidity position, the Group has not declared a dividend for this financial year after last yearโ€™s dividend of AED 500 million (US$ 136 million) to the Investment Corporation of Dubai.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group, said: โ€œFor the first 11 months of 2019-20, Emirates and dnata were performing strongly, and we were on track to deliver against our business targets. However, from mid-February things changed rapidly as the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the world, causing a sudden and tremendous drop in demand for international air travel as countries closed their borders and imposed stringent travel restrictions.

โ€œEven without a pandemic, our industry has always been vulnerable to a multitude of external factors. In 2019-20, the further strengthening of the US dollar against major currencies eroded our profits to the tune of AED 1.0 billion, global airfreight demand remained soft for most of the year, and competition intensified in our key markets.

“Despite the challenges, Emirates and dnata delivered our 32nd consecutive year of profit, due to healthy demand for our award winning products and services, particularly in the second and third quarters of the year, combined with lower average fuel prices over the year.

“Every year we are tested on our agility and ability. While tackling the immediate challenges and taking advantage of opportunities that come our way, our decisions have always been guided by our long-term goal to build a profitable, sustainable, and responsible business based in Dubai.โ€

In 2019-20, the Group collectively investedย AEDย 11.7 billionย (US$ย 3.2 billion) in new aircraft and equipment, the acquisition of companies, modern facilities, the latest technologies, and employee initiatives, a decrease following last yearโ€™s record investment spend of AEDย 14.6 billionย (US$ย 3.9 billion). It also continued to invest resources towards supporting communities, environmental initiatives, as well as incubator programs that nurture talent and innovation to support future industry growth.

At the 2019 Dubai Air Show in November, Emirates placed a US$ 16 billion order for 50 A350 XWBs, and a US$ 8.8 billion order for 30 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. With first deliveries expected in 2023, these new aircraft will add to Emiratesโ€™ current fleet mix, and provide deployment flexibility within its long-haul hub model. In line with Emiratesโ€™ long-standing strategy to operate a modern and efficient fleet, these new aircraft will also keep its fleet age well below the industry average.

dnataโ€™s key investments during the year included: the significant expansion of catering capabilities in North America with the opening of new operations in Vancouver, Houston, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco. dnata also completed the purchase of the remaining stake in Alpha LSG, to become sole shareholder of the UKโ€™s biggest inflight catering, on-board retail and logistics company.

Across its more than 120 subsidiaries, the Groupโ€™s total workforce remained nearly unchanged with 105,730 employees, representing overย 160ย different nationalities.

Sheikh Ahmed said: โ€œIn 2019-20, we were steadfast with our cost discipline while investing to expand our business and revenues opportunities. Through ongoing reviews of our work structures and the implementation of new technology systems, weโ€™ve improved productivity and retarded manpower cost increases. As the pandemic hit, weโ€™ve taken all possible measures to protect our skilled workforce, and ensure the health and safety of our people and our customers. This will remain our top priority as we navigate a gradual return to operations in the coming months.โ€

He concluded: โ€œThe COVID-19 pandemic will have a huge impact on our 2020-21 performance, with Emiratesโ€™ passenger operations temporarily suspended since ย March 25, and dnataโ€™s businesses similarly affected by the drying up of flight traffic and travel demand all around the world. We continue to take aggressive cost management measures, and other necessary steps to safeguard our business, while planning for business resumption. We expect it will take 18 months at least, before travel demand returns to a semblance of normality. In the meantime, we are actively engaging with regulators and relevant stakeholders, as they work to define standards to ensure the health and safety of travellers and operators in a post-pandemic world. Emirates and dnata stand to reactivate our operations to serve our customers, as soon as circumstances allow.โ€

Emirates performance

Emiratesโ€™ total passenger and cargo capacity declined by 8% to 58.6 billion ATKMs at the end of 2019-20, due to the DXB runway closure capacity restrictions and COVID-19 impact with a complete suspension of passenger services as directed by the UAE government during March 2020.

Emirates received six new aircraft during the financial year, all A380s. During 2019-20, Emirates phased out six older aircraft comprising of four Boeing 777-300ERs, its last 777-300 and one Boeing 777 freighter leaving its total fleet count unchanged at 270 at the end of March. Emiratesโ€™ average fleet age remains at a youthful 6.8 years.

It reinforces Emiratesโ€™ strategy to operate a young and modern fleet, and live up to its โ€œFly Betterโ€ brand promise as modern aircraft are better for the environment, better for operations, and better for customers.

During the year, Emirates launchedย three new passenger routes: Porto (Portugal), Mexico City (Mexico) and Bangkok-Phnom Penh. It also supplemented its organic network growth with a new codeshare agreement signed with Spicejet that will provide Emirates customers with more connectivity options in India.

Additionally, Emirates expanded its global connectivity and customer proposition through interline agreements with: Vueling, adding connections to over 100 destinations around Europe via Barcelona, Madrid, Rome and Milan; with Turkish low-cost airline Pegasus Airline (PC), offering customers connections onto selected routes on PCโ€™s network; and with Interjet Airlines, opening new routes for passengers travelling between Mexico, the Gulf and Middle East and beyond.

Emirates also marked two years of successful strategic partnership with flydubai. Over 5.3 million passengers have benefitted from seamless connectivity on the Emirates and flydubai network since both Dubai-based airlines began their partnership in October 2017.

While Emirates recorded a very strong revenue performance during its 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2019-20, the DXB runway closure and COVID-19 crisis in the other quarters impacted its total revenue for the financial year with a decline of 6% to AEDย 92.0 billion (US$ย 25.1ย billion). The relative strengthening of the US dollar against currencies in many of Emiratesโ€™ key markets had an AED 963 million (US$ 262 million) negative impact to the airlineโ€™s bottom line, a substantial increase compared to the previous yearโ€™s negative currency impact of AED 572 million (US$ 156 million).

Totalย operating costs decreased byย 10% over the 2018-19 financial year. The averageย price of jet fuel declined by 9% during the financial year after last yearโ€™s 22% increase. Including a 6% lower uplift in line with capacity reduction, the airlineโ€™s fuel billdeclined substantially byย 15% over last year to AEDย 26.3ย billion (US$ย 7.2ย billion) and accounted for 31% of operating costs, compared to 32% in 2018-19. Fuel remained the biggest cost component for the airline.

Despite continued strong competitive pressure and the unfavourable currency impact, the airline reported a profit of AED 1.1 billion (US$ 288 million), an increase of 21% over last yearโ€™s results, and a profit margin of 1.1%.ย Profit would have been higher without a loss of AED 1.1 billion (US$ 299 million) due to fuel hedge ineffectiveness at year end.

Overall passenger traffic declined, as Emirates carried 56.2ย million passengers (down 4%). With seat capacity down by 6%, the airline achieved a Passenger Seat Factor of 78.5%. The positive development in passenger seat factor compared to last yearโ€™s 76.8%, reflects the airlineโ€™s successful capacity management and positive travel demand across nearly all markets up until the outbreak of COVID-19 in the last quarter.

An increase in market fares and a favourable route mix was completely offset by the strengthening of the US dollar against most currencies and left the passenger yieldย unchanged at 26.2ย filsย (7.1ย US cents) per Revenue Passenger Kilometre (RPKM).

During the year, Emirates raised a total of AED 9.3 billion (US$ 2.5 billion) in aircraft financing, funded through term loans.

Emirates secured Bpifrance (French Sovereign Export Credit Agency) Assurance Export backed financing that also combined a commercial loan tranche sourced from Korean investors for all six aircraft delivered in 2019-20.

As part of an initiative to reduce costs and benefit from the prevailing global rates environment, Emirates refinanced and repriced more than AED 5.5 billion (US$ 1.5 billion) in 2019-20, resulting in estimated overall future cost savings in excess of AED 110 million (US$ 30 million).

Emiratesโ€™ management have taken several measures to protect the Groupโ€™s cash flow through cost saving measures, reductions to discretionary capital expenditure, and engaging with our business partners in improving working capital. Additionally, we have partially drawn existing credit lines before March 31, and are in the process of securing additional lines to further improve the liquidity buffer. In the last quarter of 2019-20, Emirates successfully raised additional liquidity through term loans, revolving credit and short term trade facilities to the tune of AED 4.4 billion (US$ 1.2 billion). It will continue to tap the bank market for further liquidity in the first quarter of 2020-21 to provide a cushion against the impact of COVID-19 on the cash flows in the short term.

Emirates closed the financial year with a healthy level of AED 20.2 billion (US$ 5.5 billion) of cash assets.

Revenue generated from across Emiratesโ€™ six regions continues to be well balanced, with no region contributing more than 30% of overall revenues. Europe was the highest revenue contributing region with AEDย 26.1ย billion (US$ย 7.1ย billion), down 8% from 2018-19. East Asia and Australasia follows closely with AED 24.1 billion (US$ 6.6 billion), down 9%. The Americas region recorded revenue growth at AED 14.6 billion (US$ 4.0 billion), up 1%. West Asia and Indian Ocean revenue increased by 4% to AED 9.8 billion (US$ 2.7 billion). Africa revenue decreased by 4% to AEDย 8.7ย billion (US$ย 2.4ย billion), whereas Gulf and Middle East revenue decreased by 8% to AED 7.7 billion (US$ 2.1 billion).

Through the year, Emirates introduced product and service improvements on board, on the ground, and online. Highlights include: the launch of Emiratesโ€™ first remote check-in terminal at Dubaiโ€™s Port Rashid to provide smooth sea-air connections for cruise travellers; the launch of EmiratesRED, our revamped inflight retail offering; and innovative enhancements to the Emirates app as customers increasingly choose to interact with us via their mobile devices.

For frequent flyers, Emirates launched Skywards Exclusives which offers access to the airlineโ€™s unique, money-canโ€™t-buy sponsorship experiences; and Skywards Everyday, a location based app that enables members to earn Skywards Miles at more than 1,000 retail, entertainment and dining outlets across the UAE.

Emirates SkyCargo continued to deliver a solid performance in a highly competitive market, contributing to 13% of the airlineโ€™s total transport revenue.

With the lingering weakness in air freight demand over most of the year, Emiratesโ€™ cargo division reported a revenue of AED 11.2 billion (US$ 3.1 billion), a decrease of 14% over last year.

Freight yield per Freight Tonne Kilometre (FTKM), after two consecutive years of growth, declined by 2%, largely impacted by the reduction in fuel price, and a strong US dollar.

Tonnage carried decreased by 10% to reach 2.4 million tonnes, due to the capacity reduction with the retirement of one Boeing 777 freighter and reduced available bellyhold capacity in the first and last quarters of the year. At the end of 2019-20, Emiratesโ€™ SkyCargoโ€™s total freighter fleetย stood at 11ย Boeing 777Fs.

Emirates SkyCargo continued to develop innovative, bespoke products. In October, it launched Emirates Delivers, an e-commerce platform that helps individual customers and small businesses consolidate online purchases in the US and have them delivered in the UAE. More origin and destination markets are being planned in the future, leveraging Dubai as a hub for regional e-commerce fulfilment. During the year, Emirates Skycargo also strengthened its pharma capabilities with the opening of new facilities in Chicago and Copenhagen.

Emiratesโ€™ hotels portfolio recorded revenue of AED 584 million (US$ 159 million), a decline of 13% over last year with competition further on the rise in the UAE market impacting average room rates and occupancy levels.

Emirates steps up safety measures for customers and employees at the airport and on board

Emirates is stepping up precautionary measures at the airport and on board to ensure the health and safety of its employees and customers. All cabin crew, boarding agents and ground staff in direct contact with passengers will now don personal protective equipment (PPE) which includes a protective disposable gown over their uniforms, and a safety visor, in addition to masks and gloves.

At Dubai International airport, gloves and masks are mandatory for all customers and employees. Thermal scanners monitor the temperatures of all passengers and employees stepping into the airport. Physical distancing indicators have been placed on the ground and at waiting areas to help travellers maintain the necessary distance during check-in and boarding.

The airport team has also installed protective barriers at each check-in desk to provide additional safety reassurance to passengers and employees during interaction over the counter.

On board Emiratesโ€™ flights, seats are pre-allocated with vacant seats placed between individual passengers or family groups in observance of physical distancing protocols.

Emirates has also modified its inflight services for health and safety reasons. Food and beverages continue to be offered in the form of bento-styled boxes to reduce contact between the crew and customers during meal service, and minimise risk of interaction. The personal boxes provide customers with sandwiches, beverages, snacks and desserts.

Similarly, to reduce risk of spreading the virus by touch, magazines and other print reading material are temporarily unavailable. Cabin baggage are currently not accepted on flights. Carry-on items allowed in the cabin are limited to laptop, handbag, briefcase or baby items. All other items have to be checked in, and Emirates will add the cabin baggage allowance to customersโ€™ check-in baggage allowance. Customers have to wear their masks and gloves throughout their journey from check-in until they disembark.

All Emirates aircraft will go through enhanced cleaning and disinfection processes in Dubai, after each journey.

In other news,ย Emirates in coordination with Dubai Health Authority (DHA) will be introducing additional precautions. Passengers on todayโ€™s flight to Tunisia were all tested for COVID-19 before departing from Dubai. Emirates is the first airline to conduct on-site rapid COVID-19 tests for passengers.

The quick blood test was conducted by the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) and results were available within 10 minutes. This test was conveniently done at the Group Check-in area of Dubai International Airport Terminal 3.

Adel Al Redha, Emirates Chief Operating Officer said: โ€œThe testing process has gone smoothly and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the Dubai Health Authority for their initiatives and innovative solutions. This would have not been possible without the support of Dubai Airport and other government authorities. We are working on plans to scale up testing capabilities in the future and extend it to other flights, this will enable us to conduct on-site tests and provide immediate confirmation for Emirates passengers travelling to countries that require COVID-19 test certificates. The health and safety of staff and passengers at the airport remain of paramount importance.โ€

HE Humaid Al Qutami, Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), said: โ€œWe are glad to work with Emirates on the successful implementation of rapid COVID-19 testing at the airport for departing travellers. Emirates to implement thermal screening on all US bound flights

Emirates will be implementing thermal screening measures for all passengers travelling on US flights departing from Dubai International Airport, effective tonight, 12 March 2020. Thermal scanners will be placed at departure gates for all US gateways, starting with EK 231 to Washington Dulles International Airport. If a passenger is found to have a higher than normal temperature, they will undergo further testing. This is in addition to the thermal screenings done for all passengers on arrival as they pass through customs.

In addition, Emirates has suspended its flights between Dubai and Italy starting from today, with the final flight operating on March 15. The airline is working with the relevant authorities to monitor the developments closely as the COVID-19 situation evolves.

The measures are being taken as part of the airlineโ€™s overall response to the latest developments around the COVID-19 pandemic.ย Emirates has been coordinating efforts in conjunction with local health and regulatory authorities, including the Dubai Health Authority, so that the airline meets or exceeds local and international guidelines and directives around COVID-19. Emirates plans to gradually roll out thermal screening procedures for all of its flights departing Dubai to ensure the health and safety of its customers travelling abroad.

Passengers are advised to observe the general recommended time of arrival at the airport, which is 3 hours ahead of departure, to ensure seamless check-in procedures and to complete their immigration formalities.

In addition to thermal screening procedures at the airport, Emirates has also implemented proactive and voluntary measures to ensure a safe flying experience with enhanced cleaning and complete disinfection protocols in over 248 aircraft departing Dubai each day. The airline utilises high-grade cleaning chemicals proven to kill viruses and germs, leaving a long-lasting protective coating against viruses, bacteria and fungi on surfaces. The comprehensive cleaning process includes a thorough wiping down all cabin surfaces, in addition to other normal procedures such as changing head rest covers on all seats, replacement of reading materials, vacuuming, amongst other cleaning activities.

On any aircraft found to have transported a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case, Emirates implements further deep cleaning including the defogging of cabin interiors and misting with disinfectant across all soft furnishings, and replacement of seat covers and cushions in the affected area. The aircraftโ€™s state-of-the-art air circulation system, utilising HEPA cabin air filters, will also be replaced.

The airline has also offering passengers additional peace of mind with the ability to change their travel dates without change and reissuance fees on any bookings made prior to March 31, 2020. Cancellation and refund fees will also be waived for bookings made between March 7 and March 31, 2020, regardless of travel date.

Emirates to deep clean and disinfect any suspected coronavirus aircraft that takes between six to eight hours

Emirates has made this announcement:

In response to the latest developments in the COVID-19 outbreak around the world, Emirates is taking extra steps that go above and beyond industry and regulatory requirements to ensure its customersโ€™ health and comfort, and provide them with confidence and peace of mind when planning their travel.

Enhanced cleaning and disinfection

On all aircraft departing from its hub in Dubai, Emirates has implemented enhanced cleaning and complete disinfection of all cabins as a precaution. In line with the latest expert medical finding that the COVID-19 virus is primarily transmitted by touch, Emirates has placed its greatest focus on surface cleaning.

The airline uses an approved chemical that is proven to kill viruses and germs, leaves a long-lasting protective coating against new contamination of viruses, bacteria and fungi on surfaces, and is eco-friendly.

The cleaning process includes a comprehensive wipe down of all surfaces โ€“ from windows, tray tables, seatback screens, armrests, seats, in-seat controls, panels, air vents and overhead lockers in the cabin, to lavatories, galleys and crew rest areas. All of this is done in addition to other normal procedures such as changing head rest covers on all seats, replacement of reading materials, vacuuming, and more.

To complete this thorough cleaning process within an hour while the aircraft is preparing for its next mission, requires a team of 18 trained cleaners on a Boeing 777, and a team of 36 for an A380. In a 24-hour period on an average day, some 248 aircraft go through this process.

On any aircraft that were found to have transported a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 case, Emirates would go even further, and implement deep cleaning and disinfection in a process that takes between six to eight hours to complete. This includes the defogging of cabin interiors and misting with disinfectant across all soft furnishings, and replacement of seat covers and cushions in the affected area. The aircraftโ€™s HEPA cabin air filters will also be replaced.

All of Emiratesโ€™ aircraft are fitted with HEPA cabin air filters which are proven to filter out 99.97% of viruses. They also remove dust, allergens and microbes from the air recirculated into the cabin and cockpit, which helps to provide a safer, healthier and more comfortable environment for the passengers and crew.

Peace of mind on travel plans

Emirates is also providing customers across its network added flexibility, choice, and value; with the ability to change their travel dates without change and reissuance fees. This waiver policy applies to all booked tickets issued on or from 7 March until 31 March 2020. Visit emirates.com for more details on the waiver.

Helping loyal flyers retain tier status

Recognising that some of its members will be impacted by travel restrictions and flight reductions, Emirates Skywards is providing its Platinum, Gold and Silver members the ability to maintain their current status by fulfilling 80% of their tier travel requirements between 31 March and 30 June 2020. In addition, Skywards members booked to travel between 1 March and 30 June 2020 will be able to benefit from an additional 20% bonus Tier Miles.

Monitoring and response protocols

The safety and well-being of customers and employees is a topmost priority at Emirates. Since January, the airline has activated its contingency response team to monitor daily developments on the COVID-19 outbreak, maintain contact with all relevant health and regulatory authorities, and ensure the airlineโ€™s response is current and appropriate.

Emirates continues to work closely with all its partners and industry stakeholders, to ensure travellers can continue their journeys with the assurance that their wellbeing and comfort remains at the forefront.

In 2019, Emirates will be celebrating another highlight on the rugby calendar, as the official worldwide partner and official airline of the Rugby World Cup, being staged in Japan.ย  Emirates currently sponsors the World Rugbyย Refereeโ€™s and Match Officials in addition to our partnership with the UAE Rugby Association.

With over 1,500 films across all genres to enjoy on ice, customers will have to fly over 3,000 times between Dubai and Muscat on the Emirates A380 to watch the complete ice film catalogue.

Over 25,000 catering items are loaded on the Emirates A380 for services between Dubai and Muscat, ensuring that customers can enjoy and savour the meals and amenities onboard.
