Frontier Airlines to open a new crew base at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Frontier Airlines has announced plans to open a new crew base at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) in November 2022. Up to 180 pilots and 275 flight attendants are expected to be based at PHX within the first year with additional growth anticipated in the future.

Frontier currently operates 14 nonstop routes from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with a variety of additional flight connection opportunities available within the companyโ€™s domestic and international network. Frontier is Americaโ€™s Greenest Airline and operates a fleet of more than 110 highly efficient Airbus A320 family aircraft. The airline has 230 new Airbus planes on order between now and 2029, which will triple the size of its fleet.

Frontier highlights endangered species in the Caribbean and Latin America, one to be selected for a tail

Frontier Airlines is celebrating its new growth in the Caribbean and Latin American markets with a campaign to underscore the plight of endangered animal species in six popular destinations the airline currently serves in the region. Consumers are encouraged to participate by choosing the next endangered animal to be featured on the tail of one of Frontierโ€™s new, ultra-efficient Airbus aircraft. Plus, voters are entered for a chance to win an unforgettable seven-night vacation to the tropical destination where the animal they selected is from. A second animal from among the six will be chosen at random to also be featured on another upcoming plane tail.

Frontier has rapidly expanded service in the Caribbean and Latin America and now offersย 65 routesย toย 17 tropical destinations. The remarkable growth has propagated lower fares and more convenient flights to some of the most popular vacation spots featuring world-class beaches, breathtaking views and, of course, exotic wildlife.

The six animals to choose from are:

About the Animals:

The Pink Headed Warbler โ€“ Guatemala

The Pink-Headed Warbler is endemic to the highlands of Guatemala and the neighboring Mexican state of Chiapas. It prefers to make its home in forests of oak, pine and fir, as well as shrubs. Classified as vulnerable, this population of warbler is threatened by habitat loss due to human development.

The Whistling Duck โ€“ Antigua

Restricted to the northern West Indies, the West Indian Whistling-Duck is among the rarest ducks in the Americas and is listed as Near Threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. This regional endemic has a total population of about 15,000 individuals but has suffered significant decline due to habitat loss, invasive mammalian predators and hunting.

The Two Toed Slothย โ€“ Costa Rica

Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth, also known as the northern two-toed sloth is a species of sloth from Central and South America. It is a solitary, largely nocturnal and arboreal animal, found in mature and secondary rainforests and deciduous forests. The decline of sloth populations is due to deforestation and urbanization, which have resulted in a multitude of risks for sloths. Due to habitat loss sloths are coming down to the ground more frequently, and are therefore vulnerable to dog attacks, car strikes, and poaching.

The Yellow Headed Parrot โ€“ Belize

The Belizean Yellow-headed Parrot has been experiencing severe population declines since at least the mid-1970s when poachers began aggressively pursuing them for the illegal pet trade.ย  The illegal harvest of parrot chicks and habitat loss of open pine savannas has left less than 7,000 YHPs in the wild today according to Bird Life International. Extinction in our lifetime is a real possibility for this species.

The Bahama Warblerย โ€“ The Bahamas

Only found on the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama, this bird is a habitat specialist, being found almost exclusively in the pine forests of those islands. It is one of the 7 endemic bird species of The Bahamas, meaning it is only found here and nowhere else in the world. Unfortunately, The Bahama Warbler is becoming what we would call a “Climate Change Casualty.” After Hurricane Dorian ravished Abaco and Grand Bahama in 2019, these birds disappeared from Grand Bahama and have not been seen since. This led to the BNT writing to the IUCN to have this bird elevated to an endangered species.

The Coqui Llanero โ€“ Puerto Rico

Puerto Rican lowland coquรญ is the most recently discovered (2005), and it’s one of the smallest tree frogs in the world. Mature llaneros are no wider than a dime and generally yellowish in color, with reversed comma patterns on their sides. Their tiny stature squeezes their vocal range into the highest pitch of almost any frog – just barely audible to human ears. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in Oct 2012 it would protect the rare, recently discovered Puerto Rican frog, the coquรญ llanero, as an endangered species under the Endangered Species Act. The protection includes 615 acres of freshwater wetland as critical habitat in northern Puerto Rico.

Frontier Airlines recounts its remarkable 2021 growth story

Frontier Airlines is reflecting on 2021 as an extraordinary year of growth for the 27-year-old Denver-based airline, which completed an initial public offering and became publicly traded on April 1, 2021.

Throughout 2021, Frontier added another 14 A320 family aircraft to its ultra-fuel-efficient all- Airbus fleet, furthering the companyโ€™s commitment to more sustainable flying. Frontier also expanded its โ€˜Low Fares Done Rightโ€™ route map by 132 routes, 21 destinations and nine countries.

“The Frontier team showed outstanding resilience and determination this year to accomplish unprecedented results,” said Barry Biffle, president and CEO, Frontier Airlines. “From becoming a publicly-traded company in April, to adding more than 130 routes and nearly ten international destinations to Frontierโ€™s route network, and ordering 91 new Airbus A321neo aircraft, weโ€™ve demonstrated the incredible growth our โ€˜Low Fares Done Rightโ€™ business model is capable of. As we look forward to 2022, weโ€™re excited to continue this momentum with new, greener, aircraft joining our fleet, and many more exciting new route opportunities for our customers.”

Frontier strengthened its position as Americaโ€™s Greenest Airline in 2021 through the announcement of multiple strategic agreements, including a deal with manufacturer Pratt & Whitney for ultra-efficient GTF engines to power 134 Airbus A320neo family aircraft, the launch of 30% lighter Recaro seats onboard new aircraft, and a 91-aicraft order of Airbusโ€™ A321neo, featuring advanced fuel-saving technology and industry-leading operating economics. These new partnerships, and the order for additional aircraft to satisfy Frontierโ€™s growing network needs, put the airline on the path to triple in size by 2029.

To meet the demand of its widening network, the airline welcomed more than 670 flight new attendants and 170 pilots to the Frontier team in 2021 and continues to hire for additional crew member positions. Moreover, Frontier added bases in Tampa and Atlanta this year, extending the companyโ€™s local economic benefit with new jobs and more attractive base options for team members.

Frontier Airlines retires the last Airbus A319

Frontier Airlines (2nd) Airbus A319-112 N949FR (msn 2857) (Ermine) LAS (Ton Jochems). Image: 921280.

Frontier Airlines on September 8, 2021ย marked a significant fleet milestone with the retirement of its last Airbus A319 aircraft โ€“ tail N949FR – delivered to the company in 2006.

The type had been grounded in March 2020 but it was returned to service when traffic picked up again. It is now being retired for the last time by the carrier.

Frontier passengers, crew and executives commemorated the occasion during flight 391 from Nashville (BNA) to Denver (DEN). The phase-out of the A319 is part of a fleet modernization plan by Americaโ€™s Greenest Airline, that includes a strong focus on operating newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft.

“The retirement of Frontierโ€™s last Airbus A319 aircraft is a proud and symbolic moment for our team as we look ahead towards a greener future,” said Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial, Frontier Airlines. “Our ultra-modern fleet is already the most fuel-efficient in the U.S. skies and, as we continue the transition to A320neo (New Engine Option) and A321neo aircraft, our fuel savings and operational efficiencies continue to evolve.”

The final A319 tail featuring Erma the Ermine flew with Frontier for more than 15 years. The A319 model aircraft, which the company first began flying in 2001, played a vital role in Frontierโ€™s success for more than 20 years, providing efficient, safe and reliable service, including during the airlineโ€™s transition to an ultra-low-cost carrier.

The aircraftโ€™s final flight was marked with a special onboard announcement and giveaway items for customers, including a framable certificate commemorating the occasion. Denver-based crew were invited to greet the aircraft on its final arrival during a gate celebration, as well.

Frontier operates the youngest and most fuel-efficient U.S. fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft with an average age of only 4.1 years, including the largest A320neo fleet in North America. Moreover, with approximately 140 aircraft currently on order, Frontierโ€™s modern fleet will continue to grow in the coming years, a testament to the companyโ€™s overall commitment to more sustainable, reliable and affordable flying.
