In a much-anticipated ceremony on September 14 in Mobile, Alabama, Airbus inaugurated operations at its first ever U.S. Manufacturing Facility. The plant โ€“ which assembles the industry-leading family of A319s, A320s and A321s โ€“ is officially open for business, with a skilled team of more than 250 Airbus manufacturing employees now at work on the first U.S.-made Airbus aircraft.

Airbus announced plans for the $600 million U.S. Manufacturing Facility in 2012, and construction began at the Mobile Aeroplex at Brookley the following year. The first U.S.-made Airbus commercial aircraft โ€“ an A321 โ€“ is scheduled for delivery next spring. By 2018, the facility will produce between 40 and 50 single-aisle aircraft per year. Airbusโ€™ market forecast indicates a demand over the next 20 years (from all manufacturers) for some 4,700 single-aisle aircraft in North America alone.

Fabrice Brรฉgier and members of the new Airbus workforce in Mobile were joined at the inaugural ceremony by Airbus Group CEO Tom Enders, Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, Senator Jeff Sessions, Congressman Bradley Byrne, and scores of other dignitaries, airline and aerospace executives, and local leaders. The industry- and community-wide event convened under the theme, โ€œLetโ€™s Get to Work โ€“ Together!โ€ and culminated in the ceremonial placement of a placard on a component of the first aircraft to be produced in Mobile. The placard reads, โ€œThis aircraft proudly made in the U.S.A. by the worldwide team from Airbus.โ€

The Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility joins several other Airbus and Airbus Group operations across the United States, including for example Airbus engineering offices in Alabama (Mobile) and Kansas (Wichita); an Airbus training centre in Florida (Miami); Airbus Defence & Space Military Aircraft facility in Alabama (Mobile); Airbus Helicopters factories and operations in Mississippi (Columbus) and Texas (Grand Prairie); and aircraft spares facilities in Georgia (Atlanta), Florida (Miami) and Virginia (Ashburn). The U.S. headquarters of Airbus, Airbus Defence & Space, and Airbus Group are located in Herndon, Virginia, while Airbusโ€™ Latin America headquarters is located in Miami. Airbus and Airbus Group are major customers of other U.S. aerospace companies as well, having purchased $16.5 billion of components and materials from American suppliers last year alone.

The establishment of the Airbus U.S. Manufacturing Facility doubles the number of manufacturers of large commercial aircraft in the United States, creating jobs, expanding skills, and establishing a new aerospace centre of competence on the U.S. Gulf Coast. In addition to the new Alabama manufacturing site, Airbus assembles commercial aircraft at modern facilities in Hamburg (Germany), Tianjin (China) and Toulouse (France).

DHL delivers the first A321 aircraft components for Airbus to Mobile, Alabama

DHL transport first A320 to Mobile

DHL Global Forwarding, Americas, has issued this statement:

DHL Global Forwarding, the specialist for air and ocean freight at Deutsche Post DHL Group, shipped the first aircraft components to the newly built U.S. assembly plant in Mobile, Alabama from the Hamburg Finkenwerder Airbus plant in Germany. DHL Industrial Projects developed a multimodal transport concept for the European aircraft manufacturer. From the beginning of June 2015, large components of A320 family as well as 1,000 sea freight containers and additional air freight shipments, also including hazardous goods, crossed the Atlantic. Arriving into port on June 17, DHL transported the aircraft components within a total transit time of 29 days which was of critical importance since configuration and control of the final assembly processes at Airbus depended upon it.Airbus logo (large)

โ€œOur Industrial Projects team created a plan, developed a concept and helped Airbus transport their aircraft components efficiently, effectively, and with no issues.โ€

โ€œIn order to successfully transport highly sensitive cargo, especially across great distances, it is critical to have a solutions-driven team of experts in place,โ€ said Brian Lindholm, global head of business development, DHL Global Forwarding Industrial Projects. โ€œOur Industrial Projects team created a plan, developed a concept and helped Airbus transport their aircraft components efficiently, effectively, and with no issues.โ€

The five different aircraft components with a maximum weight of thirty tonnes per section were transported on board a chartered ship using special sea transport frames and secured on roll trailers with twist locks. After arriving at the Port of Mobile and clearing Customs, the aircraft components were then loaded onto heavy-duty trailers with special cranes which will be transported a few miles to the new Airbus U.S. assembly plant in Mobile on Sunday, June 21.

For air freight shipments, both LD3 containers and consolidated shipments were used. Special legally required procedures were used for securing and transporting hazardous goods.

After the aircraft components are delivered, the sea transport frames and the air freight containers will be prepared for their return to Finkenwerder.

This is the first time DHL transports major components for Airbus.

Airbus Mobile Assembly Plant (Skeleton)(Airbus)(LR)

With the placement of the final truss atop the roof this week, the construction of the first building in the Airbus Mobile Assembly Line complex has reached an important milestone. The entire โ€œskeletonโ€ of the building can now be seen. This building is the Final Assembly Line Hangar, which is where A320 family aircraft will be assembled. The milestone was celebrated with the construction crew and project team members signing the final truss before it was lifted into position.

Construction contracts for the other buildings in the complex will be awarded soon. Aircraft assembly is scheduled to begin in 2015, with first deliveries from the Mobile facility beginning in 2016. Airbus anticipates the facility will produce between 40 and 50 aircraft per year by 2018.
