Iberia Express to operate Madrid-Berlin Tegel flights starting on October 27

Iberia Express (Madrid) will start a new route on October 27 between the Madrid hub and Berlin (Tegel). The flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Delta to fly from Indianapolis to both Montego Bay and Nassau

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) will operate seasonal weekly fights from Indianapolis to both Montego Bay, Jamaica (A320) and Nassau, Bahamas (CRJ900) starting on December 21, 2013 and running through March 29, 2014 for the winter season per Airline Route.

In addition, the company will suspend Atlanta-Dublin service from January 11, 2014 through March 8, 2014.

Delta to restore the Salt Lake City-Raleigh/Durham route on December 22

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) is planning to restore the Salt Lake City-Raleigh/Durham route on December 22 according to Airline Route. The restored route will be operated daily with Airbus A320 equipment.

WestJet and Air France expand their relationship

WestJet Airlines (Calgary) and Air France (Paris) today announced they have entered into a code-share agreement enabling Air France to offer its customers 10 new Canadian destinations operated by WestJet.

The “AF” code is now on select WestJet flights connecting from Toronto to Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Thunder Bay, Ottawa, Quebec City, Saint-John’s, Moncton and Halifax. Winnipeg and Calgary flights also bear the French carrier’s code for both Toronto and Montreal connections to Air France’s direct flights to Paris.

This is the ninth code-share agreement for WestJet which, additionally, has twenty-one interline relationships.

Vueling Airlines to add 28 new routes from Barcelona next summer

Vueling Airlines (Barcelona) is again increasing its route network at its home airport next summer. The low-fare airline issued the following statement:

Vueling in 2013 will for the fourth consecutive year, will expand operations at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport, where it plans to reach 100 direct destinations during the upcoming summer season.ย Highlights include new routes especially attractive to the business traveler as London-Gatwick, Frankfurt and Dusseldorf, as well as a significant increase in flights to new cities in Germany, France, Italy and Scandinavia.

In the last two seasons of summer, the company has launched a total of 45 new destinations that have made the second El Prat airport in Europe after Frankfurt, with greater flight of short and medium haul by your company dominant airline.ย The goal is that by 2014 Vueling Barcelona will become the European leader in this type of connections.

Of the 28 new routes planned for next summer IATA season, which begins in March 2013, highlights five never before operated from El Prat: Dresden (Germany), Rennes (France), Fez (Morocco), Rhodes and Kos (Greece ).ย The airline also added four new countries to its network: Gambia (Banjul), Finland (Helsinki), Bulgaria (Sofia) and Luxembourg.

Vueling, which already flies to London-Heathrow, starting in 2013 the route London-Gatwick Barcelona.ย It also launched routes to other European cities and North particularly attractive to business travelers and Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Turin and Casablanca.ย With this, the company responds to the demand for direct connections between Barcelona and different regions of interest to businesses.ย The goal is to reach Vueling end of 2013 to 50% of business travelers on its flights.

To meet this new offering, the airline will increase the number of aircraft based in El Prat from 34 to 43 and will include 500 new employees, including pilots, cabin crews and support personnel from different categories and specialties.

With this new momentum, Vueling consolidates its leadership position in El Prat, which currently has a market share of 30%, operating over 240 flights daily.ย Under this increased activity, Barcelona Vueling expects to attract a greater number of travelers who visited the city during the summer of 2012 on flights of the company, which was 4.7 million.

Besides Barcelona, โ€‹โ€‹Vueling will also grow in most of its other operating bases.ย Next season, there will be more flights from Bilbao to Canaries, Greek Islands and the route to Berlin will operate from the beginning of the summer.ย From Malaga and Alicante, there will be more routes to France and Benelux.Baleares will increase capacity on some of its existing routes, such as Palma-Moscow spends three to five times a week.ย Paris Orly and Amsterdam increase capacity in existing flights.ย And finally, in Canary thinking times will improve the business traveler and the connection with northern Europe through the company’s hub in Barcelona.

Vueling renews communication code and presents a new class Excellence for the business traveler Vueling continues to work to improve services for the business traveler.ย This launches the new class to Excellence, a very competitive price, offers all the elements required by the passenger to fly with flexibility, convenience and speed.ย Different cabin seating, lounge access, preferential boarding, ergonomic head, snack on board, total flexibility changes and extra points loyalty plans of the company are some of the attributes of this rate.

All these developments are part of a significant change for the airline: a new communication code that aims to project maturity and current size of the company without sacrificing the innovative spirit that has always characterized the brand.ย The starting point of all the work of the company is its people.

Air Canada to fill 900 new positions

Air Canada (Montreal) announced it will hire more than 900 employees over the next 12 months to meet its planned workforce requirements.ย  In addition, 200 new jobs will be created for flight attendants and pilots at the airline’s low cost carrier that will be launched in 2013.

Highlights of Air Canada’s 2012-13 recruitment program are as follows:

  • In addition to 160 new customer service call center agents hired to date in 2012, Air Canada is hiring an additional 60 agents in the coming months for its call centers in Montreal and Toronto.
  • Air Canada is hiring approximately 400 flight attendants to compensate for attrition and meet planned schedule requirements for its main network airline operation with the first training classes scheduled in October.
  • Air Canada will be seeking candidates for approximately 500 permanent, part-time and full-time airport customer service agent and baggage handler positions at its major airport bases located across Canada mainly to compensate for attrition as the airline prepares to meet planned operational requirements for its winter schedule.
  • Air Canada’s unnamed low cost carrier will be hiring approximately 150 flight attendants and 50 pilots for its launch in 2013.

In other news,ย Air Canada and Aer Lingus announced they have signed an interline agreement to make flying between Canada and Ireland more convenient. The agreement is effective immediately and is a preliminary step toward a full code sharing relationship expected to be finalized next year between the Canadian and Irish flag carriers.

Wind Jet ceases operations after it fails to reach an agreement with Alitalia

Wind Jet (Catania) ceased operations at midnight last night (August 11) after its merger talks with Alitalia (2nd) (Rome) collapsed. Previously Alitalia had received permission to take over the struggling carrier. The airline, based in Sicily, commenced operations on June 18, 2003.

Up to 500,000 passengers could be impacted by the grounding and the five Airbus aircraft are reported by the media to be grounded in Malta for overdue payments.

Ural Airlines to start two new routes, records a 44% traffic increase so far in 2012

Ural Airlines (Yekaterinburg) will start a new route on October 3 linking Ekaterinburg with Budapest, Hungary. The new route will operate weekly on Wednesdays with Airbus A320s.

In addition, the airline will also start weekly service between Chelyabinsk and Tashkent on September 5, also with Airbus A320s according to Airline Route.

On the traffic side, the company operatedย a total of 14,925 flights since the beginning of 2012, including 6,201 international flights, 5,447 domestic flights, and 3,134 flights to CIS countries. The Ural Airlines passenger traffic has grown by 44 percent in the first seven months of 2012.

Ural Airlines currently operates 15 Airbus A320s and nine A321s.

Airbus (Toulouse) is considering opening a new assembly plant in Mobile, Alabama as a direct competition to Boeing in the largest single market according to this report by Reuters.

Iberia is hit today by the first of 30 one-day strikes

Iberia (Madrid) was hit today by the first day of 30 single-days strikes by its pilots who are protesting the launch of the lower-wage Iberia Express (Madrid). As a result, at least 150 flights today have been cancelled by the carrier.
