Norwegian March traffic figures heavily influenced by COVID-19 measures

The global outbreak of COVID-19 that took hold across the aviation industry throughout March has heavily influenced Norwegian’s traffic figures. The company experienced a dramatic drop in demand following government-imposed travel restrictions and a general travel decline.

Norwegian immediately responded to this global change in demand and adapted its flight schedule several times during the month. The first step was to cut approximately 15 percent of planned capacity on March 10, this was then reevaluated and adjusted to up to 85 percent of planned capacity from March 16 with most cancellations starting from March 25. Capacity was 40 percent lower than planned while the flights that were operated had a load factor of 72 percent, down 13.8 percentage points compared to the same month previous year.

Compared to the same period last year total capacity (ASK) decreased by 53 percent while total passenger traffic (RPK) decreased by 60 percent. The total number of customers carried in March was 1,153,283, a decrease of 61 percent.

In March, Norwegian operated 77 percent of scheduled flights, multiple rescue flights and continued to maintain a critical regional flying infrastructure.

Norwegian to cancel approximately 3000 flights and implement temporary layoffs due to the effects of coronavirus

Due to the COVID-19 situation, Norwegian is preparing to cancel approximately 3000 flights between mid-March and mid-June. This represents approximately 15 percent of the total capacity for this period. The company has also put several other measures in place, including temporary layoffs of a significant share of its workforce.

The past week, Norwegian has experienced reduced demand on future bookings. The company will cancel about 3000 flights to meet the change in demand. The cancellations represent approximately 15 percent of the total capacity for the period mid-March to mid-June. It will affect the entire network and more details will be shared as soon as they are ready to be implemented. Affected customers will receive information about these changes as soon as they take place.

“This is a critical time for the aviation industry, including us at Norwegian. We encourage the authorities to immediately implement measures to imminently reduce the financial burden on the airlines in order to protect crucial infrastructure and jobs,” said CEO Jacob Schram of Norwegian.

“Unfortunately, cancellations will affect a significant share of our colleagues at Norwegian. We have initiated formal consultations with our unions regarding temporary layoffs for flying crew members as well as employees on the ground and in the offices. We will continue to engage in constructive dialogue with unions and employees to work through this difficult situation together,” said Schram.

Norwegian will continue to share updates with its customers, the financial market and the media once new measures are implemented.

Norwegian launches a new route to Greece

Norwegian is launching a new nonstop service from London Gatwick to Aktion Airport, which serves Preveza and Lefkada, Greece.

Launching just in time for a summer holiday in the Greek sunshine, Norwegians’ first flight to Aktion Airport will depart on May 3, 2020 with a twice weekly service* on a Thursday and Sunday for the summer season. The new service will be Norwegians’ first flight to mainland Greece from the UK and will complement the airlines’ existing Greek services to Rhodes, Kefalonia, Santorini and Crete.

Passengers will be able to enjoy direct access to the lesser-known regions of Preveza and Leftkada. Offering stunning beaches with turquoise waters and an idyllic relaxing atmosphere, these traditional Greek towns are often regarded as a hidden gem.

In addition to the new service, Norwegian is also adding capacity to key European routes for this summer with extra weekly flights to Greece and Norway. The airline has added a second weekly flight to Crete, a new morning departure five days a week to Stavanger and extended the seasonal winter service to Tromso with two weekly flights in April, May, September and October.

Norwegian offers customers CO2-offsetting and becomes first airline to sign UN climate action initiative

Norwegian has partnered with climate company CHOOOSE to make it easy for customers to offset their carbon footprint when buying a ticket with the airline. The initiative has been welcomed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

As of today, Norwegian is pleased to offer its customers climate compensation as a simple, integrated part of the booking process.

Geir Karlsen, Acting CEO of Norwegian said: “Norwegian has been named one of the world’s most environmentally friendly airlines and we are continuously working to reduce our emissions through new initiatives. We’re now putting a price on actual carbon emissions from flying, making it easy for all our customers to take climate action,”

“Even if commercial aviation technology continues to develop and Norwegian keeps reducing its environmental impact, emission-free flying is not possible today. Carbon offsetting is an important tool in managing today’s emissions, and we know that many of our customers would like to compensate for emissions associated with their journey,” he continued.

United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change: “We welcome this initiative”
Norwegian is the first airline to sign the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) pledge, committing to become climate neutral by 2050:
Putting a price on carbon in this way also helps driving more action and more ambition at all levels of society, including in business. We welcome this initiative by Norwegian to help their customers compensate their emissions when they travel. Bringing people together is fundamental for global understanding, for the economy, for wellbeing, and for the planet. Climate offsetting clean energy projects

Norwegian developed the feature to be as informative, simple, and trustworthy as possible. When first selecting a flight, Norwegian informs customers how its flights’ emissions compares to industry average. The CO2 emissions calculation is based on the official methodology of the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the International Council of Clean Transportation (ICCT) and Norwegian’s own flight emissions data. Next, customers are offered a simple option to offset their calculated carbon footprint directly in the checkout process. For customers that opt in, offsetting is then performed through carefully selected CO2-reducing clean energy projects in regions Norwegian flies to. The projects are certified by the United Nations and the Gold Standard, which sets the standard for climate and development interventions to quantify, certify and maximise their impact. The Gold Standard also includes contributions to other UN Sustainable Development Goals.
In addition to climate impact, all Gold Standard projects deliver verified benefits to the local communities where they operate – new jobs, clean energy, improved air, and more. Norwegian was voted the world’s most fuel-efficient airline on transatlantic routes in 2015 and 2018 by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) and since 2008, the airline has reduced its emissions by 30 percent per passenger kilometre thanks to new, fuel-efficient aircraft.

Norwegian reveals its plans for 2018 from London Gatwick

Norwegian Air Shuttle (Oslo) has announced its growth plans for this year from London Gatwick:

Low-cost airline Norwegian reveals its plans for 2018 as the award-winning carrier’s rapid expansion will take the airline to new heights. Norwegian will build upon its growth by launching new long-haul routes – including its first service to South America, introducing a new enhanced Premium cabin and inflight Wi-Fi to new long-haul aircraft. Norwegian will also add more affordable flights to its most popular USA destinations.

Europe’s third largest low-cost carrier flew 5.8 million passengers from the UK and Ireland and launched more than 15 routes in 2017. Some of its successes include commencing groundbreaking transatlantic flights from Scotland, Belfast and Ireland to smaller US east coast cities and taking low-cost long-haul global with the world’s longest low-cost route between London and Singapore.

Norwegian’s continued expansion is cleared for take-off and here are five developments to expect from the airline in 2018:

  1. Norwegian’s first route to South America – On February 14, 2018, Norwegian will launch its first route to South America with a brand new direct service from London Gatwick to Buenos Aires available from £299 ($406.20) one way. Four flights per week on the 787 Dreamliner will unlock more affordable travel to Argentina, offering travellers access to a unique mix of European and Latin American culture.
  2. New enhanced Premium cabin to fly on the 787 Dreamliner – Norwegian will introduce an expanded Premium cabin which will have 60% more seats for passengers wanting an enhanced experience. The new 56 seat cabin configuration will offer passengers more than a metre of legroom and 11” Panasonic monitors providing hours of complimentary inflight entertainment. The new cabin will be fitted on Norwegian’s final 20 787 Dreamliner orders set for delivery from February onwards.
  3. Chicago and Austin to become newest US destinations – Norwegian will add Chicago and Austin to its growing list of long-haul destinations from London Gatwick this spring. From £149.90 ($203.65) one way, holidaymakers and business travellers can fly daily to the Windy City which launches on March 25, 2018. From March 27, 2018, Norwegian will commence a new three weekly service to Austin, Texas, known for its world-famous cultural scene and for providing the backdrop to the South by Southwest (SXSW) festival. Direct flights are available from £164.90 ($224.00) one way.
  4. Introducing Wi-Fi on more state-of-the-art aircraft joining Norwegian’s fleet – Norwegian will add 11 Boeing 787 Dreamliners to its fleet in 2018 which are exclusively used on long-haul routes from London Gatwick. 10 of these new aircraft will feature the enhanced Premium cabin. Meanwhile 12 new Boeing 737-8 MAX 8 aircraft will land in Norwegian’s fleet this year to service the carrier’s transatlantic flights from Edinburgh, Belfast and Ireland to the US east coast. Later in 2018, Norwegian will begin to rollout inflight Wi-Fi on long-haul routes that will keep passengers connected in the skies.
  5. Daily Boston flights and planned increases for Oakland and LA – Next spring, Norwegian will increase the number of flights on some of its most popular routes from London Gatwick. Boston increases from five weekly flights to a daily service with fares from £134.90 ($183.28) one way. Plans are underway to increase Oakland-San Francisco to a daily service and more flights are planned to Los Angeles, with twice-daily departures on select days of the week.
