First commercial hydrogen-electric flight between London and Rotterdam The Hague Airport expected in 2024

The aviation sector is planning zero emission commercial passenger flights between Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTHA) andย Londonย with a 19-seater aircraft in 2024.

The aircraft, currently under development by ZeroAvia, will fly entirely on hydrogen. ZeroAvia, Royal Schiphol Group, Rotterdam The Hague Innovation Airport Foundation and the airport itself have announced a partnership to realize this ambition today.

ZeroAvia and Royal Schiphol Group will collaborate on testing and demonstrating hydrogen supply chain refueling operations and integration with airport operations.

The deal sets a solid timeline for the launch of the first zero emission commercial passenger flights between the UK andย the Netherlands, and potentially the first international commercial operation in the world. ZeroAvia and Royal Schiphol Group are in advanced partnership talks with airlines to agree on an operator for the planned route.

Through the partnership to deliver this commercial route, ZeroAvia and Royal Schiphol Group will collaborate on testing and demonstrating hydrogen supply chain refuelling operations and integration with airport operations. The two companies will also focus on ensuring the pathway for commercially adopting hydrogen-electric aviation, including establishing the right regulatory framework and understanding industry and public appetite for zero emissions flight powered by hydrogen.

ZeroAvia recently established a legal entity inย the Netherlands. This will enable the company to create opportunities for commercialization and partnership with airports, airframe manufacturers and/or airlines, within the Netherlandsย and wider European Union.

New technology

ZeroAvia has focused its R&D on developing a hydrogen-electric powertrain โ€“ using hydrogen fuel cells to power electric motors โ€“ as a viable way to tackle aviation’s climate change impacts at scale. With the hydrogen-electric system ZeroAvia is pioneering, the only emission is water vapour at manageable temperatures, allowing for sustainable flights.

Hydrogen-electric propulsion will have the additional benefit of lower operating costs, making routes more attractive to airlines and airports and passengers.

American Airlines updates its AAdvantage Loyalty Program

American Airlines made this announcement:

  • American is eliminating complicated elite qualifying metrics, introducing Loyalty Points where one qualifying AAdvantageยฎ mile earned equals one Loyalty Point.
  • In a newly redesigned loyalty program, AAdvantage members can earn status by flying, using an AAdvantage credit card or spending with an AAdvantage partner.
  • Members can unlock Loyalty Choice Rewards when they earn Platinum Pro status or higher and fly at least 30 flights on American or qualifying partner airlines.

American Airlines is redesigning its award-winning AAdvantageยฎ loyalty program, ridding it of complicated elite qualifying metrics for an easy-to-understand point system that provides multiple ways to earn status. In 2022, AAdvantage members can earn status by flying, using an AAdvantage credit card for purchases or spending with an AAdvantage partner.

โ€œLoyalty should be simple, and we have reimagined our AAdvantage program to a single point system that provides a clear path to earning status for our members,โ€ said Chief Customer Officer Alison Taylor. โ€œFor our loyal members, the message is simple: Earn AAdvantage miles, earn status โ€” whether thatโ€™s by flying on American or by spending on everyday activities. We thank our members for their continued loyalty and look forward to this renewed relationship as we enter 2022.โ€

Achieving AAdvantage status

For every qualifying AAdvantage mile earned, members will earn one Loyalty Point. Hereโ€™s how to earn points:

  • Members can earn Loyalty Points by flying on American or one of its eligible partner airlines.
  • You can also earn Loyalty Points when you use anย AAdvantage credit cardย for purchases.
  • Donโ€™t fly often, no problem. Join fellow AAdvantage members who will earn Loyalty Points every year just byย shopping onlineย orย dining out.

AAdvantage 2022 status requirements

Status Loyalty Points
Gold 30,000
Platinum 75,000
Platinum Pro 125,000
Executive Platinum 200,000

Extending status and a chance to double dip

To thank our members for their continued loyalty, American is extending all current members AAdvantage status through March 31, 2022.

And members can also double dip as any qualifying activity earned in January and February will count towards both 2022 and 2023 AAdvantage status. This gives members an extra two months to earn elite status for both years.

In the future, members will qualify for status from March through February, with status valid through March 31 of the following year.

Unlock Loyalty Choice Rewards

Next year, AAdvantage members can unlock Loyalty Choice Rewards, formerly called elite choice rewards. Loyalty Choice Rewards is a menu of rewards awarded to members that earn Platinum Pro status or higher and fly at least 30 flights on American or qualifying partner airlines.

Members can select the Loyalty Choice Reward they value the most, including an Admirals Club day pass, systemwide upgrades or bonus AAdvantage miles. Additional Loyalty Choice Rewards are available to unlock as members accrue more Loyalty Points.

Eurowings has made this announcement:

Just in time for the launch of its new base in Prague, Eurowings now welcomes its customers in Czech: Czech travelers can now book flights in their national language at eurowings.com/cz, take advantage of the offers in theย Eurowings Savings Calendarย or, for example, be inspired by theย flight scheduleย to new destinations โ€“ all conveniently in Czech.

Shortly after the booking launch, Germany’s largest vacation airline has already sold many thousands of tickets in the Czech Republic, both in individual seat sales and via local tour operators. Eurowings will open a new base in the Czech capital at the end of October 2021 and initially offer 14 new direct connections for vacationers and business travelers from there.

The new website in Czech once again underscores the airline’s “local touch” in Prague. By summer 2022, Eurowings will station three aircraft in the Czech capital and hire local crews. The jobs advertised at the new base have met with great interest on the Prague job market, with more than 6,000 applications received in recent weeks. The Lufthansa subsidiary, which specializes in low-cost European direct flights, had launched an application process for crews at its eleventh location in late summer to fill around 100 cockpit and cabin positions locally.

The Cologne/Bonn-based company combines Lufthansa’s DNA with a value-for-money concept and innovative customer services: these include industry-leading health and hygiene concepts as well as the option of booking free middle seats in the rear rows of aircraft for as little as ten euros โ€“ whether for comfort or hygiene reasons. This option has already been sold more than 50,000 times after a short time and has become a bestseller on Eurowings flights.

JetBlue reports GAAP diluted earnings per share of $0.40 in the third quarter of 2021

JetBlue Airways Corporation today reported its results for the third quarter of 2021:

  • Reported GAAP diluted earnings per share ofย $0.40ย in the third quarter of 2021 compared to diluted earnings per share ofย $0.63ย in the third quarter of 2019. Adjusted loss per share was ($0.12)(1)ย in the third quarter of 2021 versus adjusted diluted earnings per share ofย $0.59(1)ย in the third quarter of 2019.
  • GAAP pre-tax earnings ofย $190 millionย in the third quarter of 2021, compared to a pre-tax income ofย $254 millionย in the third quarter of 2019. Excluding one-time items, adjusted pre-tax loss ofย ($50) million(1)ย in the third quarter of 2021 versus adjusted pre-tax income ofย $239 million(1)ย in the third quarter of 2019.

Operational and Financial Highlights from the Third Quarter

  • Capacity declined by 0.8% year over two, in-line with our planning assumption of a 1% decline, year over two.
  • Revenue declined 5.5% year over two, which is better than our planning assumption of a 6% to 9% decline year over two. This was mainly the result of continued outperformance of our Fare Options initiative, as well as an uptick in demand as we closed out the quarter.
  • Operating expenses per available seat mile decreased 2.1% year over two. Operating expenses per available seat mile, excluding fuel and special items (CASM ex-fuel)ย (1)ย increased 12.7%(1)ย year over two, which is in-line with our planning assumption of an 11% to 13% increase year over two.
  • Adjusted Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, Amortization and Special Items (Adjusted EBITDA) in the third quarter of 2021 wasย $140 million(1), better than our planning assumption range ofย $75ย toย $125 million.

Balance Sheet and Liquidity

  • As of September 30, 2021, JetBlueโ€™s adjusted debt to capital was 53%(1).
  • JetBlue ended the third quarter of 2021 with approximatelyย $3.3 billionย in unrestricted cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, or 41% of 2019 revenue. This excludes ourย $550 millionย undrawn revolving credit facility.
  • JetBlue repaidย $74 millionย in regularly scheduled debt and finance lease obligations, and prepaid theย $115Mย CARES Act loan andย $105Mย of bank loans.

Based on the forward curve as of October 15, 2021, JetBlue expects an average all-in price per gallon of fuel ofย $2.49ย in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Accelerating ESG Efforts and Doubling Down On Commitments

  • At JetBlue, we firmly believe that robust ESG oversight generates value for shareholders. Weโ€™ve been transparently reporting on key ESG topics since 2007, with annual ESG reports aligned to SASB and TCFD reporting frameworks since 2017.
  • JetBlue continues to lead the industry in ESG governance, as the firstย U.S.ย airline to tie executive compensation to ESG metrics, execute a sustainability-linked loan, and operate an ESG Subcommittee of our Board of Directors.
  • Enabled by our recent deals with SG Preston, Neste, World Energy, and World Fuel Services, we are well ahead of pace to achieve our target of 10 percent SAF usage by 2030.
  • Launched two new programs, Gateway College and Jet Ops to Support Pathway Program, aimed at investing in our crewmembers and provide better access to careers as pilots, in technical ops and support centers.
  • We updated our uniform policy to be more inclusive, including changes to gendered uniforms, size options and hair-style policy.
  • Following a devastating earthquake inย Haiti, we transported over 14,000 pounds of supplies and over 150 volunteers from around our operation to support relief efforts.
  • We distributed over 10,000 books to our communities through our JetBlue For Good program Soar with Reading.
  • We logged over 6,400 hours of volunteering service during the third quarter.

The Northeast Alliance Supercharges Competition and Delivers Broader Benefits

  • The Northeast Alliance has supercharged competition in the Northeast by providing more choices and better service for customers.
  • Together with American, JetBlue launched 58 new routes out of the Northeast, added frequencies on more than 130 routes, and plans to expand to 18 new international destinations.
  • The Northeast Alliance is estimated to generate more thanย $800 millionย in consumer benefits annually. JetBlue plans to hire 1,800 new crewmembers for the NEA โ€“ jobs that otherwise would not be created without this alliance.

Our Recovery Plan and Actions Taken to Position JetBlue for Future Success

โ€œAs we work through our annual planning process, our teams are setting solid goals for our network, commercial and cost initiatives, and capital allocation priorities. I could not be more proud of our teamโ€™s efforts, and Iโ€™m confident that we are setting JetBlue on a trajectory to restore our earnings power to beyond 2019 levels over the coming years, generating long-term value for all of our stakeholders,โ€ said Robin Hayes, JetBlueโ€™s Chief Executive Officer.

โ€œWe believe that demand is once again poised to re-accelerate into the peak holiday periods and beyond as people continue to adjust to a new normal. We are marching towards a full recovery and a return to sustained profitability, with margin as our โ€˜north starโ€™. I am a firm believer that our unique business model โ€“ low costs, low fares, and a superior product โ€“ positions JetBlue to thrive in the years ahead.โ€

Revenue and Capacity

โ€œI am very pleased with our exceptionally strong revenue performance in the third quarter. September took the brunt of the bookings softness associated with rising case counts tied to the Delta variant. That said, trends have stabilized and are improving. We expect robust revenue acceleration throughout the quarter as the holidays approach and demand continues to meaningfully improve,โ€ said Joanna Geraghty, JetBlueโ€™s President and Chief Operating Officer.

โ€œFor the fourth quarter, we are planning for revenue to decline between (8%) and (13%) year over two. We expect troughs to be challenging, exacerbated by a slower business travel recovery, but the holidays are performing meaningfully better, and we took tactical capacity actions to better align with the demand environment.

For the fourth quarter of 2021, our planning assumption is for capacity to decline between (4%) and (7%) year over two, given the seasonal pull-back in leisure demand and a corporate travel recovery that has been pushed back. As we move through the recovery, weโ€™ll continue to be nimble in deploying capacity to areas of demand strength. Our network is one of our greatest assets, and weโ€™ll continue to build relevance across our Focus Cities to serve our Customers and achieve long-term success.โ€

Financial Performance and Outlook

โ€œOur third quarter revenue and Adjusted EBITDA(1)ย came in above the high-end of the ranges we expected in early-September. This was largely driven by stronger than expected performance of Fare Options and a mid-September pick-up in bookings, which drove a revenue result in the third quarter that we believe to be among the best in the industry,โ€ said Ursula Hurley, JetBlueโ€™s Chief Financial Officer.

โ€œFor the fourth quarter, we estimate our EBITDA(2)ย will range between negativeย ($50) millionย to positiveย $50 million dollars. This sequential decrease is due to the seasonal leisure demand pattern, pressure from the recent material spike in fuel prices, as well as ramp-up related labor costs.

Our teams continue to work diligently to improve our cost structure and mitigate the near-term pressures we are facing as we restore the business and invest for our long-term earnings power. We continue to expect CASM ex-Fuel to improve from a double-digit growth rate in the second half of 2021 to low-single-digit growth in 2022, versus 2019 levels.

We continue to make good progress in returning our balance sheet to investment grade credit metrics. Looking ahead, we plan to maintain a balanced approach to capital allocation to help achieve our financial targets, enabled by our relatively strong balance sheet which we believe ranks among the best in the industry.โ€

De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 certified by the FAA and EASA to the most stringent noise emission standards

De Havilland Aircraft of Canada issued this statement:

  • The FAA and EASA approvals follow the approval by Transport Canada in 2020 that established the Dash 8-400 turboprop as the first regional aircraft and the only turboprop to meet ICAO Chapter 14 requirements
  • As the aviation industry works to reduce the environmental impact of commercial aircraft, the Transport Canada, FAA and EASA approvals are a testament to the Dash 8-400 aircraft’s advanced design and position it well ahead of other regional jets and turboprops in delivering low community noise during take-off and landing
  • Operators globally will benefit from these approvals by not having to re-fleet or re-engine in order to meet the industry’s most stringent noise reduction requirements

De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited has announced that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have issued approvals for the Dash 8-400 turboprop aircraft as having met the most stringent noise emission standards. The aircraft is therefore certified to Stage 5 standards set by the FAA and certified by EASA as having met ICAO Chapter 14 standards. The Dash 8-400 aircraft was the first propeller-driven aircraft, and also the first regional aircraft in the world, to meet ICAO Chapter 14 standards when it was certified by Transport Canada in 2020.

Featuring quiet, swept, six-bladed Dowty propellers on Pratt &ย Whitney Canadaย PW150A engines, the Dash 8-400 aircraft has once again proven to be an environmentally advanced design. Not only is it quiet on the outside, it is also quiet inside the cabin. In order to further boost the comfort for passengers, the Dash 8-400 aircraft is engineered with aย newly improved, proprietary Active Noise and Vibration Suppression (ANVS) system that effectively reduces the propeller noise level inside the aircraft to maximize cabin comfort. The Dash 8-400 aircraft has been acoustically engineered to mitigate the detrimental effects of aircraft noise on human health โ€“ inside and out, on the ground and in the sky.

De Havilland Canada continues to make future-oriented investments to enhance the Company’s competitiveness and ensure that Dash 8 Series aircraft remain at the forefront of the regional aircraft market.
