Virgin America seeks U.S. DOT approval for code share agreement with Virgin Australia

Virgin America (San Francisco) announced today that it is requestingย U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) approval to place the Virgin Australia Airlines (Brisbane) code on Virgin America services from Los Angeles to Boston, Chicago (O’Hare), Dallas/Fort Worth, Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle and Washington D.C. ย Once approved, this will be the first-ever codeshare agreement for the California-based carrier, building on a 2009ย interline agreement with Virgin Australiaย that paved the way for a more seamless travel experience for guests flying betweenย Australiaย and the U.S. This will offer seamless booking on a single ticket for guests traveling fromย Australiaย to multiple destinations in the U.S. ย Virgin America’s recent move to a newreservations systemย allowed the carrier to initiate this first code share alliance as well as significantly expand itsย interlineย partnerships in recent months.

Virgin America arrives in Portland, Oregon while promoting Portlandia

Virgin America (San Francisco) today (June 5)ย launched its new service to Portland, Oregon โ€“ the 18th city in the carrier’s expanding network. The new destination is being servedย with two daily nonstop flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and two daily nonstop flights from San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

The airline has teamed up with IFC around its hit show “Portlandia” to help launch the new service.ย  “Portlandia” Mayor and award-winning actor Kyle MacLachlan joined the real Portland Mayor Sam Adams onboard the airline’s inaugural SFO-PDX flight today.

Guests onboard Virgin America’s first SFO-PDX flight today were welcomed at the Portland-themed celebration in an aircraft hangar โ€“ just steps off the PDX runway.ย  Guests at the hangar event included winners of a unique “Portlandia” promotion. ย In a nod to one of the show’s cult favorite sketches — “Put a Bird On It” — where characters apply pictures of birds to everyday items turning them into instant “art,” the airline and IFC teamed up to create anย “Arts & Aircrafts” Facebook competitionย that invited guests to upload their favorite photos and “put a bird on it” to score a discount off Virgin America’s new PDX flights. For more, visit:ย ย http://apps.facebook.com/artsandaircrafts/tab.ย The top voted photo winners scored an invite to the Portland event today, where celebrated DJs AndrewAndrew will take the spirit of the “Portlandia” sketchย “Everybody’s a DJ”ย to new heights, with interactive iPad DJ sessions for guests.ย  IFC and Virgin America continue their partnership later this summer, offering guests the chance to win a walk-on role in season three of the hit original series.

Virgin America narrows its fiscal 4Q and yearly operating loss

Virgin America (San Francisco) reported its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2011 and full year 2011. ย Despite substantially higher fuel costs and financial pressures associated with industry-leading capacity growth, the airline narrowed its fourth quarter operating loss to $8.1 million (a 29 percent year-over-year improvement) and its fourth quarter margin to (2.9 percent) โ€“ an improvement of three points year-over-year.ย  The airline’s full year operating loss was $27.4 million on revenues of over $1 billion.ย  Top line growth remained strong with revenue gains significantly outpacing capacity growth.ย  Year-over-year, revenue grew by 45 percent for the fourth quarter and 43 percent for the full year on a 29 percent increase in capacity โ€“ compared to an industry average capacity growth rate of less than one percent in 2011.ย  The airline ended 2011 with $160 million in unrestricted cash.

Virgin America’s results were primarily impacted by high fuel costs and the costs of growth.ย  The airline also incurred costs associated with its transition to a new reservations system in 2011. ย The cost per gallon of fuel increased by 38 percent in the fourth quarter and 33 percent for the full year versus the prices paid in the prior year.ย  This fuel cost increase reduced the airline’s operating profit by $31 million for the quarter and $105 million for the full year.ย  The airline’s rate of growth and entry into new markets created margin pressure which offset gains in more mature markets.ย  The carrier’s established markets (those operated for at least 12 months prior to the fourth quarter of 2010) were profitable for both the fourth quarter and full year 2011.ย  In these markets, revenue per available seat mile (RASM) improved by 18 percent year-over-year for the fourth quarter.

In late 2011, Virgin America reported that it raised an additional $150 million through a four and a half year debt facility.ย  The airline also noted that it obtained lease financing commitments for all of its Airbus A320 Family aircraft slated for delivery through September 2013.ย  In addition, the airline closed on a financing facility for the majority of its pre-delivery payment obligations (“PDPs”) due on the first 20 aircraft within its order of 60 Airbus A320s, scheduled to begin delivery in summer 2013.

Virgin America continued to drive significant growth in 2011:ย  expanding its fleet from 34 aircraft in January 2011 to 46 aircraft in December 2011 (as of May 1, 2012, the carrier operates 51 aircraft) and achieving major carrier status as defined by the Dept. of Transportation (DOT).
