Virgin America posts an operating profit in the third quarter, defers deliveries of 30 new A320neo aircraft to 2020-2022

Virgin America (San Francisco) today reported its financial results for the third quarter of 2012.ย  The airline achieved a $15.8 million operating profit for the quarter, resulting in a four percent operating margin.ย  Despite the continued dual financial pressure of high fuel prices and Virgin America’s industry-leading capacity growth, the airline reported an operating profit for the quarter, improved unit costs, and an increase in average fares. For the third quarter, the carrier reported a 24 percent improvement year-over-year in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, and aircraft rental expense (EBITDAR).ย  Year-to-date, the airline reported a record high EBITDAR of $135.7 million, an improvement of 23 percent year-over-year. Cost per available seat mile excluding fuel (ex-fuel CASM) decreased year-over-year by three percent in the three months ended September 30, 2012. A privately-held company, the carrier is additionally forecasting an operating profit for the fourth quarter of 2012.

From the third quarter of 2010 through the third quarter of 2012, the airline increased available seat miles (ASMs) by 73 percent, significantly outpacing the industry ASM growth average of 0.4 percent.ย  ย Virgin America’s rate of growth was necessary to establish the airline’s core network and to achieve economies of scale.ย  However, as the airline absorbed the tail-end of this growth cycle, its entry into new markets created margin pressure which offset gains in more mature markets.ย  The airline’s core markets (those operated more than 24 months) achieved an operating margin of eight percent in the third quarter and were profitable year-to-date.ย  This strong performance in mature markets was offset by weaker performance in newer destinations added during the airline’s rapid two-year growth phase.ย  This phase of accelerated growth is now largely complete, as the airline plans to take delivery of just one additional aircraft in 2013โ€”and today announces a deferred growth plan with respect to aircraft on order.ย  This reduction in growth will allow the carrier to continue to improve profitability, as new markets develop to match the performance of its core established network.

Virgin America announces today that it has reached an agreement to modify its Airbus aircraft order.ย  Under the revised agreement, Virgin America’s order for current engine option A320 aircraft will be reduced from 30 positions to ten, with delivery of those aircraft occurring in 2015 and 2016.ย  In addition, the airline announces it will defer its 30 Airbus A320neo positions to new delivery dates in 2020 through 2022.ย  Average ASM growth will decelerate from the 28 percent annual growth rate the airline has driven over the past three years, to mid single-digit annual ASM growth over the next several years.ย  The Company has taken delivery of 24 aircraft since the first quarter of 2010 โ€“ growing to a fleet of 52 Airbus A320 Family aircraft.

Virgin America loses $4 million in the second quarter

Virgin America (San Francisco) reported its financial results for the second quarter of 2012. ย Total operating revenue for the second quarter grew by 29 percent to $347 million on a capacity increase of 32 percent.ย  The Company narrowed its operating loss to $4 million for the second quarter, and improved earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization, and aircraft rental expense (EBITDAR) by 44 percent, to a record high of $54 million. ย EBITDAR margin for the second quarter rose to 16 percent, a 1.7 point year-over-year improvement.ย  Year-to-date Virgin America reported total revenue of $614 million โ€“ a 31 percent increase year-over-year.ย  Operating loss for the six months ended June 30, 2012, was $53 million.ย  Year-to-date the Company has achieved EBITDAR of $61 million, an improvement of 23 percent over the first six months of 2011.

In the second year of an unprecedented capacity growth cycle, Virgin America’s unit revenue (RASM) declined a modest 2 percent as compared to the second quarter of 2011.ย  Over the past two years, the airline has increased available seat miles (ASM) by 72 percent with an 11 percent increase in RASM. ย The Company took delivery of one aircraft during the second quarter, ending the quarter with a total fleet of 52 Airbus A320 Family aircraft.ย  ย The airline has taken delivery of 24 aircraft total since the first quarter of 2010.ย  This rapid growth established Virgin America’s core network and provided an important base for the carrier’s future success.ย  This phase of accelerated growth is now largely complete, as Virgin America will take delivery of just one additional aircraft through the second quarter of 2013.

Cost per available seat mile (CASM) excluding fuel decreased by 1.5 percent, despite the cost pressures of growth, reflecting the benefits of economies of scale that Virgin America will see as growth slows.ย  Fuel costs during the quarter averaged $3.40 per gallon โ€“ a decrease of 3.4 percent year-over-year, although the quarter was still one of the highest cost periods in Virgin America’s history.ย ย  Virgin America maintains a hedging program to manage the volatility of fuel prices and provide some protection from short-term price increases.ย  As of June 30, the Company has hedged 58 percent of its expected fuel consumption for the rest of 2012, and 30 percent for the first half of 2013.

This year, Virgin America reached the threshold to be classified a major carrier for reporting purposes by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and as such began reporting its on-time performance, baggage handling and other key operational statistics to the DOT monthly.ย  For the second quarter of 2012, Virgin America achieved an 85.2 percent cumulative on-time performance, placing the carrier seventh for on-time performance among all reporting major U.S. carriers for the quarter.ย  The airline’s baggage handling rate for the first six months of 2012 was 0.88 mishandled baggage reports per 1000 guests, which placed it first among all reporting U.S. carriers for baggage reliability for the first half of 2012.

Virgin America and Banana Republic team up to introduce new uniforms

Virgin America (San Francisco)ย and Banana Republic announced that this summer the airline will debut new Banana Republic-designed uniforms for the airline’s 2,000 in-flight and airport teammates, ย and pilots.ย  The uniforms will feature a fresh, modern look with aviation details and a palette inspired by the airline’s own inventive service style and signature cabin design. ย The runway-worthy looks will be unveiled on Virgin America flights and at airports nationwide on August 8, 2012 โ€“ the day the airline marks its fifth anniversary of operations. ย Virgin America also will offer Banana Republic travel essentials inspired by the new uniforms, available to Virgin America flyers for a limited time via the airline’s Redโ„ข in-flight entertainment system Shop platform and in select Banana Republic stores beginning August 7, 2012.

The uniform project was an 18-month process, involving ongoing design brainstorms among Kneen and Banana Republicย designers, as well as informative focus groups and fit sessions with the airline’s creative and brand teams, airport teammates, crew, and in-flight leadership. ย The partnership also consisted of a unique internal “Design Challenge,” in which Banana Republic designers competed for the coveted opportunity to create the uniform design. A behind-the-scenes video of the making of the new collection can be viewed below.

The uniforms feature an array of styles for Virgin America’s pilots, in-flight and guest service teammates. For men, the nine styles include leather jackets, lined mac coats, striped sleeve sweaters, woven shirts and pants. For women, thirteen styles include a classic pencil skirt, slim dress, trousers, leather jacket and trench to start, paired with luxe silk print scarves, slim plaque belts and Virgin America-branded serving aprons for in-flight meal service. All looks include classic aviation touches, such as shoulder tabs and button chest pockets.

Virgin America reports a 1Q operating loss of $49 million, launches its code share partnership with Virgin Australia

Virgin America (San Francisco) has reported another quarter in the red. The airlineย reported its financial results for the first quarter of 2012 yesterday. ย With overall fuel costs higher by 47 percent year-over-year, the financial pressure of the airline’s industry-leading capacity growth and a revenue shortfall associated with the carrier’s transition to a new reservations system, Virgin America reported a first quarter operating loss of $49 million on revenues of $267 million.ย  Top line growth continued to outpace the expanding airline’s capacity growth.ย  Year-over-year, total revenue grew by 33 percent for the first quarter on a 29 percent increase in Available Seat Miles (ASMs), at a time when the rest of the industry reported flat capacity.ย  The airline ended the quarter with $111 million in unrestricted cash.

Virgin America reported 2.2 percent year-over-year RASM growth, versus the double digit RASM percentage increases reported in 2010 and 2011.ย  This was driven by significant capacity growth and systems issues associated with the Company’s transition to a new reservations platform.ย  The growing airline’s rate of entry into new markets created margin pressure which offset revenue gains in more mature markets.ย  While capacity was up 29 percent year-over-year, total capacity increases were up 59 percent over the past two years.ย  This rapid growth established Virgin America’s core network and provided an important base for the carrier’s future success.ย  This planned phase of accelerated growth will wind down in mid-2012, until the airline’s next major fleet order begins delivery later in 2013.ย  ย At the same time, website issues and revenue management challenges associated with the Company’s transition to a new Sabre reservations system reduced first quarter revenue by $10 to 15 million.

Virgin America’s results were also adversely impacted by high fuel prices.ย  Had fuel prices remained flat year-over-year, the airline’s fuel costs would have been $15 million lower for the quarter.ย  The cost-per-gallon of fuel increased by 14 percent in the first quarter. ย In late 2011, Virgin America resumed a structured fuel hedging program to help manage the impact of fuel price volatility.ย  Approximately 70 percent of the airline’s fuel consumption in the first quarter of 2012 was hedged at prices slightly below market levels, resulting in a fuel expense for the quarter that was approximately $2 million below market prices.ย  The carrier has hedged approximately 33 percent of its expected fuel consumption for the remainder of 2012.ย  Since April 2012, fuel prices have dropped significantly.ย  Under Virgin America’s hedging program, the Company will not realize the full benefit of falling prices until the second half of 2012.

Virgin America continued to drive significant growth in the quarter: expanding its fleet from 38 aircraft in March 2011 to 51 aircraft by the end of the first quarter 2012 (today, the carrier operates 52 aircraft). ย Virgin America took delivery of five Airbus A320 aircraft in the first quarter, capping a remarkable expansion over the past two years.ย  The airline has acquired 23 aircraft since the first quarter of 2010, an 82 percent increase. ย This phase of accelerated growth comes to an end in mid-2012, with deliveries under the carrier’s next major fleet order not starting until later in 2013. ย In 2011, the carrierย announced a major fleet order โ€“ including the first commercial order for the A320neo.

Clearly Virgin America is under pressure to return to the black during the upcoming quarters.

In other news, Virgin Americaย has launched its first codeshare โ€“ with sister-branded airline, Virgin Australia, selling tickets as of July 4 in Australia on Virgin America flights from Los Angeles to Boston, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood, Philadelphia, Portland (Oregon), Seattle/Tacoma and Washington (Dulles). This is the first-ever codeshare agreement for the California-based carrier, building on a 2009ย interline agreement with Virgin Australia.
