WestJet Link is now giving Cranbrook another hub option

WestJet today announced that its regional airline, WestJet Link, will begin operating nonstop flights between Vancouver and Cranbrook, B.C., on October 27, 2019.

With the addition of Vancouver-Cranbrook, WestJet Link will now operate six routes including Calgary to Cranbrook, Lethbridge, Prince George, Lloydminster and Medicine Hat.

All WestJet Link flights are operated through a capacity purchase agreement with Pacific Coastal by using its fleet of 34-seat SAAB 340B aircraft. Each aircraft includes six seats available in WestJet Premium, offering guests advanced boarding, no-charge for two checked bags and seating at the front of the aircraft.

WestJet reports a significant return to second quarter profitability

WestJet has announced its second quarter results for 2019, with net earnings of $44.3 million, or $0.38 per fully diluted share compared with a net loss of $15.8 million, or $0.14 per fully diluted share reported in the second quarter of 2018.

“We are very pleased with this significant return to second quarter profitability.” said WestJet President & CEO Ed Sims. “I want to acknowledge the remarkable effort of all 14,000 WestJetters who rose to the challenge of delivering this notable improvement in year over year performance and thank all of our guests for their continued loyalty.”

WestJet’s update on the Onex takeover

WestJet made this announcement:

WestJet Airlines Ltd. hasย announced that at a special meeting held on July 23, its shareholders and option holders overwhelmingly voted to approve its previously announced proposed transaction with Onex Corporation.ย  Of the votes cast at the Meeting, more than 92.5 percent of shareholders and optionholders who voted were in favour of the proposed transaction.

WestJet and Onex entered into a definitive agreement on May 12, 2019 , for the proposed acquisition of WestJet by Onex under a plan of arrangement, pursuant to which each outstanding share of WestJet will be exchanged for $31.00 in cash subject to the terms and conditions of the Arrangement Agreement, following which WestJet will operate as a privately-held company.

Ed Sims, WestJet’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said, “We are very pleased to obtain overwhelming support from our securityholders at today’s special meeting. Receiving this support is an important step on our path to closing the transaction, and we continue to engage with the necessary authorities on the remaining approvals.”

The total number of shares represented by shareholders present in person and by proxy at the Meeting was 69.2 million, representing approximately 60 per cent of WestJet’s issued and outstanding Common Voting Shares and Variable Voting Shares. The total number of stock options represented by optionholders present in person and by proxy at the Meeting was 3.3 million, representing approximately 54 per cent of WestJet’s issued and outstanding stock options.

Given that the total number of votes cast by or on behalf of holders of WestJet’s Variable Voting Shares at the Meeting exceeded 25 per cent of the total number of votes cast at the Meeting, the results below reflect the fact that the vote attached to each Variable Voting Share has been automatically decreased to equal the maximum vote permitted per Variable Voting Share under WestJet’s amended and restated articles of incorporation, which, in these circumstances was 0.48960, 0.45108 and 0.45272ย of a vote per Variable Voting Share for each approval of the Arrangement Resolution (as defined below) noted below, respectively.

The Arrangement is still subject to other conditions to closing, including remaining regulatory approvals, and final approval of the Arrangement by the Court of Queen’s Bench ofย Alberta.

Further information regarding the Arrangement is provided in WestJet’s management information circular dated June 19, 2019 in respect of the Meeting. Assuming the timely receipt of the remaining regulatory approvals and Court approval, the transaction is expected to close in the latter part of 2019.

WestJet announces its winter schedule

WestJet announced increased frequency and improved connectivity from its hubs to more destinations across its network.

WestJet’s seasonal schedule for winter 2019/2020 features more flights from Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto to domestic, transborder, international and sun destinations and includes WestJet’s seasonal service to both Paris and Nashville from Calgary, commencing earlier than past years on March 12 (Paris) and March 16 (Nashville). WestJet’s popular daily summer seasonal service between Calgary and Portland (PDX) will also extend through winter.

For winter, WestJet’s 787-9 Dreamliner will also fly between Calgary and Maui and as previously announced, the airline’s new weekly non-stop service between Victoria International Airport (YYJ) and Los Cabos Mexico International Airport (SJD) begins November 5, 2019 and service between Calgary and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (PUJ) (below) commences on December 14, 2019.

Highlights of WestJet’s 2019/2020 winter schedule include:

WestJet, Delta Air Lines obtain clearance from the Canadian Competition Bureau for transborder joint venture

WestJet and Delta Air Lines today announced that their proposed U.S. โ€“ Canada transborder joint venture has received clearance under Canada’s Competition Act from the Canadian Competition Bureau (CCB). The CCB issued a no-action letter confirming that it does not intend to challenge the proposed joint venture agreement between WestJet and Delta Air Lines.

The proposed joint venture between the two airlines is still subject to regulatory approval from the Department of Transportation in the United States.

Upon receipt of all regulatory clearances or approvals the new joint venture will enable Delta and WestJet to deepen their existing partnership with expanded codesharing, reciprocal elite frequent flyer benefits, optimized growth across the U.S.-Canadaย transborder networks, and co-location at key hubs with initiatives designed to deliver a more seamless guest experience. The partners will also begin implementing joint sales and marketing activities and increase belly cargo cooperation.

WestJet begins summer service between Edmonton and St. John’s

WestJet today again connected Alberta and Newfoundland and Labrador with the departure of its nonstop flight between the Edmonton International Airport (YEG) and St. John’s International Airport (YYT).

As part of WestJet’s summer schedule, the new three-times weekly service features conveniently timed flights and strengthens ties between two important destinations in WestJet’s network.

WestJet announces new vacation routes for the winter

WestJet has announced a hot new reason to travel south this winter โ€“ Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Starting November 5, 2019, WestJet will operate nonstop between Victoria International Airport (YYJ) and Los Cabos Mexico International Airport (SJD) with weekly service that gets guests to the beach by the afternoon of the same day.

In addition, the airline announced a new weekly nonstop between Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), Dominican Republic on its Boeing 767-300 aircraft starting December 13, 2019. The airline’s widebody 767 will also operate on flights between Toronto and both Montego Bay, Jamaica and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

WestJet adds the Calgary – Dublin route

With the departure of flight WS6 late on June 1, WestJet becomes the only airline operating a nonstop route between Calgary and Dublin. The airline’s newest route provides historic access between Western Canada and Ireland and is the last of three Boeing 787 Dreamliner inaugurals that are central to WestJet’s global strategy and focus on Calgary as its initial Dreamliner hub.

WestJet’s newest Dreamliner route adds to its existing 787-9 flights between Calgary, Paris and London (Gatwick), supporting tourism and trade between Europe and Canada. In addition, WestJet’s Calgary-Dublin service complements its existing seasonal Halifax-Dublin route. WestJet has been operating flights to Dublin from Eastern Canada since 2014.

Flights between Calgary and Dublin are operated by the airline’s fleet of 320-seat, Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft featuring WestJet’s business, premiumย and economyย cabins.

By June 2019, WestJet will offer flights to 67 nonstop destinations with an average of 975 flights per week from Calgary. More Calgarians choose WestJet for their air travel than any other airline.

WestJet is now flying to Barcelona

WestJet on May 24 opened greater access to both Europe and Canada with its inaugural flight between Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) and Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ). The airline’s new route is its first to Spain and gives European business and leisure travellers access to the greater WestJet network through the airline’s Toronto hub.

The three-times weekly service is operated on WestJet’s Boeing 767-300 that includes the airline’s updated Premiumย and Economyย cabin service. This summer, with the addition of Barcelona, WestJet will operate to five European cities including London, Gatwick, Paris, Dublin and Glasgow.

WestJet to fly the Dreamliner to Maui

WestJet's third Dreamliner

WestJet today revealed its winter Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner schedule, announcing the state-of-the-art aircraft will now fly between Calgary and Maui and will operate an additional day to London (Gatwick) this winter.

As part of the schedule release, WestJet also announced the 787-9 Dreamliner will be operate daily service between Toronto and London (Gatwick) starting October 23, 2019.

WestJet flies between Calgary and Maui up to six times weekly, or up to four times weekly on the Dreamliner, with service launching October 31, 2019. In addition, WestJet’s Dreamliner will operate between Calgary and London (Gatwick) four times weekly starting October 27, 2019. WestJet currently flies daily between Calgary and Gatwick. WestJet already serves more destinations with more flights from Calgary than any other airline, and these additions augment WestJet’s continued investment growth in the Calgary and Alberta economies.

The WestJet Dreamliner features 320 seats in three cabins: business, premium and economy, all of which contain a high-level of comfort and WestJet’s award-winning guest service. The Dreamliner’s Business cabin features all-aisle-access, lie-flat seats with on-demand dining and entertainment. The upscale Premium cabin is theย ideal combination of comfort, value and guest service including a separate cabin, elevated meal service and signature welcome perks featuring champagne and amenity case.
