CMA CGM Air Cargo takes delivery of its first two Boeing 777Fs, based in Paris and orders two more

1st 777F, delivered on June 1, 2022

CMA CGM Air Cargo (Paris) on May 31, 2022 took delivery of its first Boeing 777F freighter, the pictured F-HMRB. A second has also arrived.

The 777Fs will be operated by a new CMA CGM Group French airline based at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport.

They group issued this statement:

The CMA CGM Group, a global leader in sea, land, air and logistics solutions, announce today the delivery of its two first Boeing 777 Freighters and the purchase of two more.

Four Boeing 777 Freighter will join the CMA CGM AIR CARGO fleet

At a ceremony signing held in Everett, WA, CMA CGM AIR CARGO took delivery of its second Boeing 777 Freighter, after the reception of its first Boeing 777 Freighter on May 31. These planes both come from the order CMA CGM AIR CARGO placed in Spring 2021. The purchase of two Boeing 777 Freighters was the first direct order since the CMA CGM Group announced the launch of its dedicated air cargo transportation division in February 2021.

ย CMA CGM AIR CARGO also officially disclosed an order for two additional Boeing 777 Freighters. When delivered, the new planes will complete a fleet of at least 12 Boeing and Airbus aircraft by 2026. This additional order means that the CMA CGM Group will have a total of four Boeing 777 Freighters in its fleet.

ย A cost-effective investment

The Boeing 777 Freighter will provide CMA CGM AIR CARGO the flexibility to deploy the aircraft across its growing air freight network in Europe, North America and Asia, as the Group pursues its commitment to offer its customers a complete range of transportation and logistics solutions.

ย As the world’s largest, longest range, and most capable twin-engine freighter, the aircraft can carry a maximum payload of 107 tons. With a range of 9,200 kilometers, this plane will allow CMA CGM AIR CARGO to grow its air freight service by offering more international destinations and choice.

CMA CGM AIR CARGO provides end-to-end solutions for CMA CGM customers

Launched in March 2021, CMA CGM AIR CARGO is the Groupโ€™s new division dedicated to air freight. It represents another step forward in the CMA CGM strategic direction set by Rodolphe Saadรฉ, CMA CGM Chairman and CEO, of providing the Groupโ€™s customers with an offering that harnesses the tight fit between shipping and logistics.

Route Map:

As previously reported, the CMA CGM Group and Air France-KLM Group on May 18, 2022 announced that they have signed a long-term strategic partnership in the air cargo market. This exclusive partnership will see both parties combine their complementary cargo networks, full freighter capacity and dedicated services in order to build an even more competitive offer thanks to the unrivalled know-how and global footprint of Air France-KLM and CMA CGM.

A 10-year exclusive strategic commercial partnership to strengthen their air cargo offering

CMA CGM and Air France-KLM share a strong ambition to invest and grow sustainably in the air freight business.

The agreement will have an initial duration of 10ย  years. Air France-KLM and CMA CGM will ย join and exclusively operate the full-freighter aircraft capacity of the respective airlines consisting initially of a fleet of 10 full-freighter aircraft, and an additional combined 12 aircraft on order:

  • 4 full-freighter aircraft at CMA CGM Air Cargo (with outstanding orders for an additional 8 aircraft, 2 of which may be operated by Air France-KLM in the future),
  • 6 full-freighter aircraft at Air France-KLM Group based at Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (with outstanding orders for an additional 4 aircraft)[2].

This new commercial partnership also covers Air France-KLMโ€™s belly aircraft capacity, including over 160 long-haul aircraft.

The partnership will leverage both partnersโ€™ respective global sales teams, presenting one voice to the customer.

The strategic commercial partnership is expected to generate significant revenue synergies including the joint design of the full freighter networks and enhanced products and services mix opportunities. It will help meet customers’ ever-increasing need for more integrated and resilient supply chains and will leverage Air France-KLMโ€™s vast existing franchise, experience and capabilities in air freight, backed by a global cargo network. CMA CGM will mobilize its large commercial network and global logistics platform and will complete this offer with innovative logistics and multimodal solutions, particularly in sea and land transport.

CMA CGM Group to become a reference shareholder of Air France-KLM Group

As part of this long-term exclusive partnership, CMA CGM will reinforce its commitment in the air freight industry by becoming a new reference shareholder in Air France-KLM. CMA CGM has the firm intention to take up to 9% of Air France-KLMโ€™s ex-post share capital, for a period consistent with the implementation of the strategic commercial partnership.

This investment could be made as part of the contemplated capital increase of Air France-KLM, as announced on February 17, 2022[3]. Air France-KLMโ€™s main shareholders will support a resolution for the appointment of one board member representing CMA CGM at the next shareholdersโ€™ meeting (May 24, 2022).

Norwegian sees continued passenger growth, up 16% in May

Norwegian Air Shuttle issued this statement:

Norwegian’s traffic figures for May showed that Norwegian had 1.6 million passengers, an increase of 16 percent compared to the previous month.

โ€œAs we approach the busy summer months, we continue to ramp up production as planned to meet the increasing demand. Despite capacity constraints at certain airports, we manage to complete almost a 100 percent of our 400 daily scheduled flights with high punctuality,โ€ said Geir Karlsen, CEO of Norwegian.

Punctuality, as measured by the number of flights departing within 15 minutes of scheduled time, was at 84.9 percent in May, an increase from 82.6 percent in April. As many as 97 percent of all flights arrived on schedule or no more than an hour late.

The number of passengers increases month by month, and the company notes that bookings for the summer period continue to grow. A lot of people have already booked tickets to sun and sand destinations and recently Norwegian has seen growth in the city destinations as well. During May, the company opened several new routes to serve the growing demand.

Norwegian had 1,628,040 passengers in May, as compared to 96,909 in May 2021. The load factor was 79.2 percent. The capacity (ASK) was 2,459 million seat kilometres, while actual passenger traffic (RPK) was 1,947 million seat kilometres. In May, Norwegian operated an average of 64 aircraft and 99.7 percent of scheduled flights were completed.

Norwegian has significantly increased its fleet as planned in 2022 and will operate 70 aircraft during the summer. Recently, Norwegian signed an agreement in principle with Boeing that will ensure delivery of new 737 MAX 8 aircraft in the years to come. A continued fleet renewal will give passengers an even more comfortable on-board experience in modern and fuel-efficient aircraft.

Malaysia Airlines flies its first passenger flight with Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel supplied by Petronas

Malaysia Airlines made this announcement:

In conjunction with World Environment Day, Malaysia Airlines, the national carrier of Malaysia, today operated its first passenger flight using Neste MY Sustainable Aviation FuelTM (SAF) on flight MH603 from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Singapore (SIN), which was refuelled at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

The historic flight was operated with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft fuelled by a blend of conventional jet fuel and Nesteโ€™s SAF, which is produced from 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as animal fat waste that was used for the SAF fuelling on this flight.

Produced by Neste, the worldโ€™s largest SAF producer, the fuel was supplied through a supply deal with PETCO Trading (UK) Ltd, which is PETRONASโ€™ marketing and trading arm based in Europe, while product handling and refuelling was carried out by PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB) at KLIA.

Following this milestone, the long-term supply of SAF will be made available at KLIA from hereon for potential airline customers, as well as future flights operated by sister airlines under Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), including Firefly.

The send-off event in KLIA today follows the historic SAF-fuelled commercial cargo flight MH7979 from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in December last year, proving the feasibility of SAF as a cleaner and more viable fuel option.

To further drive the advocacy, promotion and adoption of SAF in line with the Twelfth Malaysia Plan and commitment toward a lower carbon future, a special taskforce has been formed by the National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office (NAICO) and led by Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). Other members include the relevant Ministries and industry players including MAG and PETRONAS.

Both MAG and PDB entered a partnership in 2021 to jointly explore potential collaborative opportunities that advance sustainability, including the supply and adoption of SAF at KLIA. They also aim to strengthen awareness of aviation sustainability through a united communication and advocacy strategy around carbon emission reduction.

In anticipation of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) mandatory phase in 2027, PETRONAS is evaluating planned developments of greenfield and brownfield biorefineries as well as co-processing at existing PETRONAS facilities. With this strategic growth, PETRONAS will be well positioned to supply SAF domestically and internationally, with additional operational flexibility to also produce hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) or Renewable Diesel.

Brussels Airlines partners with Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp to design new uniform, could be facing a pilot’s strike

Brussels Airlines made this announcement:

As part of its new brand identity, Brussels Airlines is creating a new uniform for its cabin crew, pilots and airport staff. The Belgian airline is partnering with the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, where second year student Gabrielle Szwarcenberg emerged as the winner among five students who each drew three signature items in a competition to become the designer of the complete Brussels Airlines uniform. With this collaboration, Brussels Airlines wants to show even more of its Belgian DNA and promote the Belgian fashion scene worldwide.

Belgian cooperation

As of summer 2023, Brussels Airlinesโ€™ cabin crew, pilots and airport staff will wear a new uniform. To design the uniform, the airline partnered with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp. After surveying the staff about their needs and preferences, five promising students from the academy were selected and briefed to convey the new brand identity in the design of a new uniform.

“The Fashion Department of theRoyal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp is internationally renowned in the fashion world. The academy exudes quality and Belgitude, making it the ideal match for Brussels Airlines. With this collaboration, we want to support emerging talent and offer the Belgian fashion scene a worldwide stage”
โ€‹
Michel Moriaux, Head of Marketing at Brussels Airlines

โ€œAlthough the Antwerp fashion department is primarily focused on artistic and experimental subjects and we are overloaded with requests for collaborations year after year, we were instantly inclined to say yes to the partnership with Brussels Airlines because it is a Belgian icon. It gave the students the opportunity to discover another side of the fashion spectrum and to translate this into a concrete project. We are very proud of our promising student Gabrielle Szwarcenberg.โ€
โ€‹
Katarina Van Den Bossche, Fashion Design teacher 2nd year & coordinator of the Antwerp Fashion Department SHOW

Comfortable, modern and classy

With its new branding, launched in November last year, Brussels Airlines got a fresher look and logo, highlighting the diversity and Belgian character of the airline. Now the staff of Brussels Airlines will get to wear a uniform that emphasizes the same values.

“We listened carefully to our uniform-wearing colleagues about what they want and expect from their uniform. Their comfort is very high on the list of priorities in this process, but sustainability and inclusiveness also play an important role. We want everyone to feel good in their uniform and to be able to be themselves. We are impressed with what we have seen from Gabrielle Szwarcenberg and look forward to develop the uniform with her.โ€
โ€‹
Barbara Fleury, Uniform Coordinator at Brussels Airlines

“The fact that I was selected out of the insanely talented creatives in the Antwerp Fashion Department is already an honour, but to have been chosen the winner is mind-blowing to me. I am so thrilled to get the opportunity to completely redesign the airline aesthetic with a fresh new design perspective; and especially for such an iconic Belgian company as Brussels Airlines.”
โ€‹
Gabrielle Szwarcenberg, second year student at the Fashion Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp

In the coming months, Brussels Airlines and Gabrielle Szwarcenberg will design all the pieces of the uniform and choose a supplier to produce them. The new uniform will be presented in spring 2023.

In other news, the unions representing the pilots are threatening a strike in either late June or early July.

Swedish government to assume SAS debt for equity, will not inject additional capital

SAS is getting a one-time lifeline from the Swedish government. However it will be the last injection.

SAS issued this statement:

Today’s announcement regarding the intention of the Swedish Government to support the conversion of its debt holdings into SAS equity is an important step toward the success of the transformation plan, SAS FORWARD.

The full implementation of SAS FORWARD, including the burden sharing components, will allow SAS to become a competitive player in the European airline industry, thereby attracting the necessary new equity capital to restore its liquidity, deleverage its balance sheet and invest in a new fleet of aircraft.

The Swedish Government has also announced they will not inject additional new capital. SAS wants to express its appreciation of the support that has been given from the Swedish State over the years. During the pandemic, the state support provided was an absolute necessity for the companyโ€™s survival.

Since 1946, SAS has been an important part of the Scandinavian infrastructure, connecting Sweden and Scandinavia to the world and the world to Scandinavia. This continues to be SASโ€™ mission for generations to come.
