Air Inuit puts into service the world’s first De Havilland Dash 8-300 with an oversized cargo door

Air Inuit announced today that it has added the world’s first oversized cargo-door Dash8-300 to its fleet. After more than 36 months of planning, design, modernization, and safety testing, the specially modified aircraft finally received its Supplemental Type Certificate from Transport Canada on February 3.

Installing an oversized cargo door on a Dash8-300 aircraft is not only a world first, but more importantly a practical way to enhance air Inuit’s essential day-to-day service. By possibly facilitating the transport of food and other goods on pallets, loading and unloading time can be reduced, while reducing the risk of damaging fragile goods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables.

Made possible thanks to the expert technical support of Rockwell Collins, this initiative is part of Air Inuit’s philosophy of always finding new solutions to meet the needs of its customers and residents of northern regions, while improving its environmental footprint.

Innovating to meet unique challenges

Air Inuit serves 14 communities across Northern Quebec by delivering essential products and oversized materials. In the absence of road access, Air Inuit establishes an essential link and thus ensures the reliable and efficient delivery of goods such as food and essential tools, such as all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles.

Air Inuit chose the Dash 8-300, a reliable model built in Canada, as it perfectly combines capacity and adaptability. The aircraft is well suited to locations served by a short gravel runway and has a proven track in the harsh weather conditions of Nunavik. With this unique addition, Air Inuit can more easily fulfill its mission to serve and develop communities in Nunavik and beyond.

Protecting the environment

The development of this new oversized cargo door for the Dash8-300 by Air Inuit was made possible in part thanks to a significant financial contribution from the Government of Quebec’s Green Fund. This support has been critical to innovation, as it has been possible to operate a more fuel-efficient aircraft, the Dash8-300, rather than continuing to use the HS.748 which consumes 30% more fuel and was removed from Air Inuit’s fleet several years ago.

Alaska Airlines unveils a major investment to expand and remodel its lounges in Seattle/Tacoma and Portland

Alaska Airlines has targeted a significant, multi-million dollar renovation and expansion of our most popular Lounges with plans for all-new locations at both atย Seattleย andย Portlandย airports in the coming years. The revitalization of two current Lounges โ€“ scheduled to get underway this spring โ€“ will eventually pave the way for completely new spaces in 2025-26. The investment continues the dramatic improvements we’ve made in our Lounges, which includes the opening of our 15,000-square-foot Flagship Lounge at N Concourse inย Seattleย in 2019 and our new location at Terminal 2 inย San Franciscoย last summer.

The Bistro area that will be added to the Alaska Airlines Lounge at the D Concourse in Seattle.

A hefty amount of work will start soon at our Lounges to make the guest experience even better. As that happens, the initial planning and designing of our completely new Lounge locations gets underway with a targeted opening of 2025-26. Here’s what’s ahead this year alone at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport andย Portlandย International Airport โ€“ each of them crucial hubs in our network:

Reimagined space coming to the Alaska Airlines Lounge at the D Concourse in Seattle.

SEATTLE

  • We’re investing nearlyย $7 millionย for Lounge upgrades inย Seattleย for 2022-23.
  • The first phase of work involves the C Concourse Lounge and it’s scheduled to begin in late spring or early summer. We’re adding nearly 60 seats as the overall space grows by an additional 3,000 square feet as we convert neighboring offices. The Lounge will remain open during construction with little impact to guests.
  • The second phase of renovations targets the Lounge in D Concourse โ€“ our first lounge location we opened more than 40 years ago and its first renovation in nearly 20 years. After the expanded space in C Concourse Lounge opens, we’re planning a six-month closure and total overhaul of the D Concourse Lounge. We’re expanding seating by nearly 30%, adding new product features and giving the area better flow. This location will also receive a new bistro bar located near the lounge entrance, making it easier for guests to grab a hand-crafted espresso drink when they’re in a hurry. It’s set to reopen in early summer 2023.
  • As part of the Port ofย Seattle’sย C Concourse Expansion Project, the opening of an all-new, more than 20,000-square-foot Alaska Lounge is on the radar for 2026. It would eventually become the primary Lounge for our guests departing from C and D Concourses.

PORTLAND

  • We’re investing nearlyย $1.5 millionย for Lounge upgrades inย Portlandย for 2022.
  • We’ll enlarge the Lounge by 1,000 square feet with an enclosed patio area that extends into Concourse C. With new seating for 30 people, the total seating capacity will go to 100. Work begins in the spring and it’s scheduled to be completed this summer. During the renovation, the current Lounge will remain open to guests.
  • Now for something fun, different and super convenient. We’re adding a temporary ‘express lounge’ at theย newly-renovated Concourse Bย for our guests traveling through that section of the airport. The mini-lounge is scheduled to open in the summer with seating for up to 35 people near Gate B2, offering guests a selection of beverages and light snacks before their flights.
  • The all-new Lounge is currently scheduled to open in the 2025-26 timeframe. It’s expected to be more than 10,000 square feet โ€“ giving our guests a lot more elbow room.

Alaskaย operates eight Lounges at six airports: Anchorage;ย Los Angeles; New York JFK;ย Portland;ย San Francisco; andย Seattleย (three locations). Theย Alaska Lounge Membership Programย offers two options for guests to choose from: Alaska Lounge members get access to all of our Lounge locations, and Alaska Lounge+ members get access to all our Lounges and more than 90 partner lounges around the world.

Lufthansa Cargo continues its support of Cargo Human Care

CHC was founded in May 2007 by Lufthansa Cargo staff members and doctors from Germany / Unbureaucratic and on-going help for people in need in Kenya.

Cargo Human Care (CHC) was founded 10 years ago by employees of Lufthansa Cargo and doctors in Germany with the aim of providing unbureaucratic and ongoing help for the poorest parts of the population in Kenya. Medical care and education are the pillars of its commitment. Today the organization runs a childrenโ€™s home for 120 orphans, a medical centre where 50 German doctors work on a regular basis, and a young peopleโ€™s home that offers vocational training for school-leavers of the childrenโ€™s home. Lufthansa Cargo has supported this project right from the start and provides flight tickets for doctors and free transport capacities for medical equipment among other things.

CHCโ€™s commitment at a glance

CHCโ€™s hitherto over 200ย sponsorships are one of the most important pillars of its development work. Through their regular donations the sponsors enable solid, reliable school and career training and medical care for the children, teenagers and young people in CHCโ€™s environment. In 2016, the sponsors gave a total of โ‚ฌ108,000. Over the past ten years their donations totaled โ‚ฌ3.5m. This ensures educational institutions with good quality standards, extracurricular assistance and support by social workers, as well as medical care for those with chronic illnesses.

Theย Mothersโ€™ Mercy Home (MMH)ย is a childrenโ€™s home for orphans in the north of Nairobi. It was founded in 2001 by women of the Anglican Church, and CHC added a new building in 2008. There Cargo Human Care provides a home for 120 orphans with the help of donations and sponsorships.

During their career training, up to 24 young people live in theย John Kaheni Residenceย community, named after an MMH orphan who passed away. All CHC career training activities outside the MMH are coordinated there by CHC social workers and external trainers. The development of personal skills, communication coaching, career orientation and interview training, coordination of internships and IT knowledge are important elements.

Theย Cargo Human Care Medical Centreย was opened in 2009 to provide a medical care service to people in need in the vicinity of the orphanage. In addition to treatment rooms, it has a laboratory and pharmacy. 50 Specialist doctors from Germany regularly volunteer their services at the clinic for approximately one week at a time supporting a local team of twelve people. In 2016, they helped around 7,000 destitute patients by providing over 25,000 treatments.

CHC also continues to help around 6,000 people in four villages of the Marsabit region in the north of Kenya by raising funds and providing aid in theย fight against hunger.

Air Serbia carried 83% more passengers in 2021 than in 2020

Air Serbia issued this traffic report:

  • 1,586,665 passengers were carried – 83 percent more compared to 2020
  • 39 percent more traffic compared to 2020
  • Average load factor was 64 percent
  • Load factor on flights to New York reached up to 80 percent
  • The share of direct sales channels was increased from 35 percent in 2019 to 52 percent
  • Air Serbia Cargo saw its performance increase as much as 55 percent compared to the pre-pandemic period

After 2020, which was marked by the biggest crisis in the history of global aviation, Air Serbia carried 1,586,665 passengers in 2021, which represents an increase of as much as 83 percent. Although 2021 was also marked by the coronavirus pandemic, the average load factor on Air Serbia flights was 64 percent.

For the best part of 2021, the Serbian national airline has continuously recorded a market share at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport of close to or even more than 50 percent, exceeding the pre-pandemic result from 2019 and further solidifying its leading position at the Belgrade airport.

In 2021, Air Serbiaโ€™s volume of traffic increased 39 percent compared to 2020. The accomplished result is 35% lower than in pre-pandemic, record-breaking 2019, but it is significantly above the European average in 2021, which was -44 percent compared to 2019.

โ€œBeing flexible, adapting quickly to the market changes, using sound resource management and constantly embracing innovations, we managed to accomplish satisfactory results during the biggest global crisis in our industry. We are glad that the previous year was better than 2020 and we are prepared for a strong expansion in the coming period. The challenges we successfully overcame represent a firm foundation for further development and continuing to implement the strategy planned before the pandemic. We are looking forward to a further expansion in European and Middle Eastern markets, which awaits us from April and June, when we will be launching flights to as many as 12 destinations from the Serbian capital. We began a stage of continued growth as a regional leader, and we are on track to meeting the goals set already now for 2023 – reaching the pre-pandemic levels from record-breaking year 2019,โ€ said Jiri Marek, CEO of Air Serbia.

Ten of Serbian national airlineโ€™s most popular routes, which posted the best performance in 2021, were between Belgrade and the following destinations – New York, Moscow, Tivat, Paris, Podgorica, Zurich, Istanbul, Amsterdam, London and Athens.

During the summer season, from mid-April to the end of October of 2021, Air Serbia operated a total of 1,100 round trip charter flights, carrying approximately 140,000 tourists to popular resorts in Turkey, Egypt and Greece, as well as other tourist destinations around the world. The most popular charter destinations among Serbian travellers last year were Antalya in Turkey and Hurghada in Egypt.

Air Serbiaโ€™s direct sales channels grew by 17 percentage points – from 35 percent in 2019 to 52 percent in 2021.

On flights to New York, in 2021, Air Serbia reported an average load factor of 71 percent, reaching as much as 80 percent during the summer months. Performance from the transatlantic route almost reached the pre-pandemic levels. Since the launch of flights in June 2016 until today, Air Serbia carried more than 360,000 passengers between Belgrade and its destination in North America.

Air Serbia Premium Lounge at the Belgrade Airport was visited by 29,090 guests during 2021, marking the second-best result since it was founded in 2015. Last year, Air Serbia signed cooperation agreements with Luxair, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways and Fly Dubai, as well as with the Collinson Group, which owns world-famous travel programs at airports around the world – “Priority Pass”, “LoungeKey” and “Lounge Pass”.

In 2021, Air Serbia Cargo had record results with performance surpassing the pre-pandemic period by as much as 55 percent.

Finnair sees a clear improvement in traffic during January, up 427.3% over a year ago

Finnair has issued this traffic report for January:

In January, Finnairย carriedย 451,300ย passengers, which wasย 427.3% more than in January 2021.ย The number of passengers in January 2022 wasย 25.1% less than in December 2021.

The COVID-19 impact, including the strict travel restrictions imposed by several countries due to the Omicron variant, still affected all passenger traffic figures. It was particularly visible in the North Atlantic and Asian figuresย even though travel from both Finland and Sweden to the United States and e.g., Thailand opened in November, thereby increasing the number of passengers carried by Finnair. Passenger traffic figures are, in general, clearly at their lowest during Q1 and, together with the Omicron impact, this was visible also in January figures compared to December 2021.

The overall capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK), increased in January byย 499.5% year-on-year but decreased byย 4.5% month-on-month.ย Finnair operated, on average, 209 daily flights (cargo-only included), which was 182.4% more than in January 2021 but 9.1% less than in December 2021.ย The differences between capacity figures compared to January 2021 are explained by the longer average stage length of flights operated and by the larger gauge of aircraft operated. Finnair’s traffic, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs), increased by 963.3% year-on-year but declined byย 20.9% month-on-month. The Passenger Load Factor (PLF) increased byย 19.7% pointsย to 45.1% year-on-year but decreased byย 9.3% points month-on-month.

The ASK increase in Asian traffic wasย 271.2% year-on-year. In European traffic, the ASKs were up byย 616.5%.ย The ASKs in domestic traffic increased byย 169.1%.

RPKs increased in Asian traffic by 1,333.2%, in European traffic by 797.7% and in domestic traffic by 177.9% year-on-year.

The PLF wasย 39.0% both in Asian traffic and in North Atlantic trafficย but both were supported by the strong cargo operations. The PLF wasย 53.7% in European traffic and 54.0% in domestic traffic.

Passenger numbers increased in Asian traffic byย 1,280.9%, in European traffic byย 546.9% and in domestic traffic byย 169.9% year-on-year.

In North Atlantic traffic, ASK, RPK and passenger number growth rates year-on-year cannot be calculated as there were no passenger flights in January 2021.

In January, available scheduled cargo tonne kilometres increased byย 425.2% year-on-year (increased by 6.4% month-on-month) and revenue scheduled cargo tonne kilometres increased byย 278.5% (decreased by 13.5% month-on-month), both due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on scheduled flights, especially in North Atlantic and Asian traffic, in January 2021. Cargo-related available tonne kilometres increased by 216.6% year-on-year (increased by 3.2% month-on-month) and revenue tonne kilometres increased by 135.0% (decreased by 13.8% month-on-month) and both include the cargo-only flights, operated mainly between Europe and Asia,ย as well as between Europe and North America. Cargo-only tonnes grew by 17.1% year-on-year (decreased by 15.3% month-on-month). Exceptionally strongย demand for cargo capacity continued in January as the total cargo tonnes increased by 139.4% year-on-year. They decreased, however, by 11.9% month-on-month as the seasonality applies to demand for cargo as well.

In January, 63.1% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule (80.7%). In addition to severe weather conditions, on-time performance was impacted by COVID-19-related challenges, such as travel restrictions, which required additional travel document checks, and higher-than-normal sick leaves, which caused resourcing challenges both internally and for service providers in the home hub as well as in outstations.

Traffic statistics for February 2022 will be published on Tuesday 8 March 2022.

Loganair to add more flights from Aberdeen

Loganair has made this announcement:

On the back of its 60thย anniversary celebrations last week, Scotlandโ€™s airline Loganair has announced an expansion at Aberdeen International Airport with the introduction of a new route to Oslo and the creation of over 20 new jobs.

The year-round link between Aberdeen and the Norwegian capital will be restored by Loganair this summer, commencing from June 13, 2022. It will fly up to six weekly flights, with a daily service Sunday โ€“ Friday, in each direction with its 49-seat Embraer 145 Regional Jet aircraft.

Weekday flights will leave Aberdeen at 08:30, arriving in Oslo at 11:05 local time.ย ย ย  Westbound flights will leave Oslo at 11:40 local time and arrive in Aberdeen at 12:20.ย ย ย  Sunday flights will depart Aberdeen at the later time of 13:20 and leave Oslo at 16:30 local time, enabling both leisure and business travellers to make the most of their weekend.

Loganair is the largest airline operator at Aberdeen International Airport and with todayโ€™s announcement, it will serve no fewer than 14 destinations from its Aberdeen hub, while it expects to add more as demand for air travel continues to recover from the pandemic. The airlineโ€™s extensive scheduled service network at Aberdeen accompanies a range of contract operations for major customers in the oil & gas and logistics sectors.

To support this summerโ€™s expansion and its emergence from the pandemic, Loganair has recruited more pilots, cabin crew and engineers to work at its Aberdeen base. It directly employs over 120 staff at the airport and supports a further 100 indirect jobs.

The training program for the new recruits is well under way, welcoming more than 20 new pilots and cabin crew to Loganairโ€™s operation โ€“ many of whom were formerly employed at Aberdeen by Flybe prior to that airlineโ€™s collapse nearly two years ago.
