Air Canada unveils Turning Red themed aircraft celebrating Disney and Pixar’s all new film set In Toronto

Air Canada has today unveiled an aircraft with a themed livery and other surprises for its customers in celebration of the highly anticipated release of Disney and Pixar’sย Turning Red, an animated film that is set inย Torontoย and directed by Academy Awardโ„ข winner and Canadian Domee Shi.

Disney and Pixar’sย Turning Redย introducesย Meilin Lee, a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming, is never far from her daughterโ€”an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda!ย Turning Redย will premiere exclusively on Disney+ acrossย Canadaย onย March 11, 2022.

Airย Canadaย will be promoting the film through a themed livery that will fly across the country on a Canadian built Airbus A220. You can watch a video of the characters coming to life on our aircraftย here.

The airline is also launching Air Canada’s Contest Celebrating the Release of Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red, offering five prize packages, each featuring a trip for four people toย Torontoย to attend the Canadian premiere special event of the film onย March 8. The contest begins today and runs untilย February 20ย for residents ofย Canada. To enter the contest, please visitย https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/book/special-offers/disneypixar.html.

Starting this month, passengers onboard Air Canada aircraft will enjoy a specialย Turning Redยญvideo, inspired by the film’s trailer. On select aircraft, passengers can discover director Domee Shi’s favourite places inย Torontoย by exploring Air Canada’s seatback city guide, and on aircraft destined forย Toronto, an animated landscape of the city will be featured on seatback screens as passengers board.

Next month, the March issue of Air Canada enRoute magazine will feature a custom-illustrated cover ofย Torontoย withย Meilin Leeย as the panda gazing across the city, as well as a feature interview with director Domee Shi.

SAS opens new routes to Toronto from Copenhagen and Stockholm

SAS expands its network in North America and will start direct routes to Toronto from Copenhagen and Stockholm in June 2022. SAS will operate three weekly flights from Copenhagen and four weekly flights from Stockholm with brand-new A321LR aircraft.

Toronto is the fourth largest city in North America, an international center for business and finance, a truly cosmopolitan city with a vast array of experiences for travelers, from major sports and culture events to great outdoor sceneries around the Great Lakes.

SAS direct routes to Toronto will start in June 2022, provided that SAS obtains the necessary approval from the authorities. Ticket sales will start soon.

The Toronto routes will be operated by A321LR aircraft in a three-class configuration with 157 seats; 22 seats in SAS Business, 12 seats in SAS Plus (premium economy), and 123 seats in SAS Go (economy).

In the coming summer season, SAS will fly to a total of seven destinations in the US and Canada: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Washington DC, and Toronto.

Schedules to and from Toronto:
Copenhagen-Toronto: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday
Toronto-Copenhagen: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
Stockholm-Toronto: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday
Toronto-Stockholm: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday

Facts about Airbus 321LR
The aircraft has 22 Business, 12 Plus and 123 Go, meaning a total of 157 seats in a single aisle aircraft. The seats are especially chosen for the A321LR to optimize the comfort in all three travel classes. Seats in SAS Business are fully flat seat beds and there are different mood light scenarios in the cabins, as well as hi-speed Wi-Fi. Every seat is equipped with IFE screens, PC-power and/or hi-power USB. The reduced noise level inside the cabin will further enhance the travel experience onboard.
The A321LR is part of SASโ€™ ongoing fleet renewal and will reduce climate-impacting emissions in comparison to previous generations of similar aircraft.

SAS to transfer 27 routes to two new lower-cost subsidiaries, trouble coming with its pilots?

Scandinavian Airlines-SAS is transferring 27 unprofitable routes to two new lower-cost subsidiaries (SAS Connect and SAS Link): 13 routes from Copenhagen Kastrup and 14 routes from Stockholm Arlanda, according to Dagens Nyheter.

The company says it must lower its costs in order to remain competitive.

SAS Connect (Stockholm-Arlanda) will operate Airbus A320s. Nine A320s have been transferred to this new subsidiary.

SAS Link (Copenhagen) will operate Embraer 195s. So far, six ERJ 195s have been designated. Operations are expected to commence on March 28, 2022. A base is also expected to be established in Bergen, Norway.

Both companies will have lower wages for its pilots.

SAS Scandinavia pilots have been critical of this management plan and no agreement has yet been reached. Negotiations will be forthcoming.

PLAY reports growing load factor and strong U.S. ticket sales

PLAY made this announcement:

PLAY carriedโ€ฏ13,488โ€ฏpassengers in January with a load factor ofโ€ฏ55.7% an increase fromโ€ฏ53.2%โ€ฏin December. A surge in COVID-19 cases in the past months caused hesitation amongst passengers to book their travel, and PLAY adjusted its schedule and reduced capacity in January to reflect this. However, we are seeing very strong booking trends for the coming months, and it is obvious that consumersโ€™ confidence has started to return as the effects of COVID-19 dissipates.

Peopleโ€™s attitude towards the pandemic is clearly changing and many are prepared to travel again. As an indication of strong booking trends in January, the daily booking numbers were approximately three times higher than in December. This uptick in bookings for spring and summer travel makes us optimistic and the outlook for 2022 is bright. Nevertheless, we are prepared to weather the uncertainty associated with the pandemic with flexible operations, a solid financial position, and a strong cash balance.

88.5% of PLAYโ€™s flights in January arrived on schedule despite very challenging winter operations.

New aircraft brings PLAYโ€™s fleet to six in 2022

PLAY has signed a Letter of Intent for one A321neo aircraft. The aircraft is scheduled to arrive in April in time for PLAYโ€˜s services to North America in spring 2022.

PLAY has now secured the first ten aircraft in the fleet, five A321neos and five A320neos. PLAY has not changed its fleet plan as laid out in the companyโ€™s business plan and will operate six aircraft this summer increasing to ten in spring 2023.

New low-cost route between Europe and New York

On February 1, PLAY launched ticket sales to New York. PLAYยดs first flight to New York will be on June 9, and flights will be operated daily. PLAY will fly to New York Stewart International Airport and will be the first airline to operate international flights from the airport for a number of years. This will be a major benefit for the millions of people living in the area and the local tourism industry. This is PLAYยดs third destination in the United States as flights to Baltimore/Washington, D.C. will begin in April, and to Boston in May.

The cost of operating at New York Stewart Airport is significantly lower than other airports in New York, making it possible for PLAY to offer the lowest fares between New York and Europe. Because of less traffic at the airport, PLAYยดs aircraft will spend less time in holding patterns and taxiing on the ground, saving fuel, operating expenses, and reducing carbon emissions. This aligns well with PLAYยดs strategy of offering the lowest prices and comfortable and relaxed services in an environmentally-friendly manner. The reception after the launch was very good, and we immediately saw a healthy flow of bookings coming from the U.S., Europe and Iceland.

โ€œJanuary is traditionally a challenging month in aviation and even more so in pandemic times. We are therefore quite pleased to see our load factor growing from December as in a normal year this would not be the case. Itโ€™s also very encouraging to see that our new destinations and network expansion are receiving a very positive commercial reception in our focus markets. In spring, we will increase our capacity significantly with the addition of new aircraft, new European destinations, and of course the launch of our hub-and-spoke transatlantic service. Looking at the many positive developments in our business environment, the declining disruption of COVID-19, and the rapidly growing demand, I am confident that we are increasing our capacity and expanding our network at precisely the right point in time,โ€ says Birgir Jรณnsson, CEO.
