airBaltic welcomes its 26th Airbus A220-300

airBaltic announced on social media:

We are excited to welcome our 26th Airbus A220-300 aircraft, registered as YL-AAZ!

This is the first out of seven planned Airbus aircraft deliveries for airBaltic in 2021.

The first aircraft for Canarian Airways is painted

Operated by One Airways, will become EC-NMO

Canarian Airways’ first aircraft, the pictured ex-Atlantic Airways Airbus A319-115 OY-RCG (msn 5079), has been painted at Southend, albeit minus titles (for now). Presumably titles will be added later. The airframe will become EC-NMO on delivery.

The tail logo has been altered from the original concept drawing below.

As previously reported, Canarian is planning to commence operations in late June with this single Airbus A319 from Tenerife Sur Airport.

The new airline is planning to fly to European destinations such as Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Glasgow, Cardiff and Berlin.

The new airline is owned by the Spring Hotels Group and is working with One Airways. One Airways will operate the aircraft.

A new colorful version of Ecuatoriana is planning to launch operations in October

Ecuatoriana Airlines (2nd) is a prospective new airline in Ecuador. The company unveiled its plans on April 29, 2021.

The new airline is planning to launch scheduled passenger operations in October 2021 on domestic routes including the important Quito – Guayaquil route with Dash 8-400s.

Later the airline plans to add international routes with Boeing 717s.

The new airline will have several different versions of its colorful livery.

The logo is based on the hummingbird.

The company issued this statement:

Ecuatoriana Airlines introduced its branding and identity on Thursday, April 29, 2021. This event was 100% virtual.

It is a pleasure to tell you that we are advancing steadily, convinced that the country needs to revolutionize its aviation forever. Despite the current situation of the global health crisis, we have continued working generating products such as the ยซFounders Clubยป with only 10,000 places, ยซAmbassadors Clubยป our frequent flyer program, and our “Ecuatoriana Boutique” with the best products.

Likewise, we continue in our certification process aimed at obtaining our AOC. Although we have not been able to progress in this regard as we would have liked due to the different current restrictions, we continue working towards this objective.

Finally, we want to mention that after careful planning, research, and analysis, Ecuatoriana Airlines has decided to also opt for the Boeing 717-200 aircraft for its second phase of operations. The 717-200 is a twin-engine jet with a capacity for 115 passengers configured on three classes of service, and thanks to its operational performance, it fits perfectly with the geography of Ecuador and the region.

Additionally, we will operate with the Dash 8-400 turboprop domestically and also on some cross-border flights. The Dash 8-400 has a capacity of up to 78 passengers in a configuration of two classes of service, being ideal for domestic short-haul flights of less than 1.5 hours in duration, and its low operating costs will allow us to transfer these savings to our passengers.

Later on May 3, 2021 the new airline issued this statement:

Ecuatoriana Airlines is embarking on a special mission to bring back air travel to domesticย Ecuadorย with low fares that will make travel affordable when it starts service inย October 2021. Discover the World has been appointed as Ecuatoriana’s sales partner in the local Ecuadorian market and will be responsible for developing sales inย Colombia,ย Peru,ย USA,ย Canada,ย Germany,ย France,ย Italy,ย Spain,ย Holland, and theย United Kingdom.

Ecuatoriana Airlines also revealed its new logo which embodies the culture of the airline. Selecting a stylized hummingbird illustrates the airline’s commitment to work hard on behalf of its customers as well as bringing all the flavors and colors of beautifulย Ecuadorย to their passengers’ experience.

“With Ecuatoriana Airlines and Discover the World, a new era for Ecuadorian tourism has begun,” saidย Eduardo Delgado, President & CEO of the airline. “We selected Discover the World as our partner because they have a vast knowledge of the Ecuadorian market and the best relations with travel and tour operator agencies.”

“Together, Ecuatoriana Airlines and Discover the World will continue to move forward with its commitment and work to reactivate national and international tourism to Ecuador.ย  We are making it easier to accessย Ecuador’sย airports, where many have been shut down and providing cost reductions in fares acrossย Ecuador,” addedย Eduardo Delgado.

Rocรญo de Dรญaz, Director of Discover the World Ecuador said, “We join Ecuadorian Airlines’ vision of offering both Ecuadorians and tourists a unique, warm and excellent service with the highest safety standards. We are sure that this strategic alliance will be fruitful in every way.”

The original version of Ecuatoriana was quite colorful too.

Aviation, travel and tourism sectors applaud EU Parliament vote on โ€œEU COVID-19 Certificatesโ€

IATA has made this announcement:

Setting Final Negotiations withย European Commission and Council into Motion

  • Swift alignment by all three EU Institutions critical in restoring free movement for EU citizens by summer.
  • A clear, simple and harmonized European approach is desperately needed to reopen travel in a safe and responsible way.

Europeโ€™s aviation, travel and tourism sectors fully welcome yesterdayโ€™s vote in the European Parliament on the EUโ€™s proposed Digital Green Certificate Regulation, setting trilogue negotiations between the Parliament, the Council and the European Commission into motion. Swift action and alignment among the institutions is now critical in order to make the certificates operational by June and ensure reciprocity with non-EU systems. Common, interoperable, secure and GDPR-compliant health certificates represent an essential tool to facilitate the free movement of people within the EU and reopen travel in a safe and responsible way through the easing, and ultimately lifting of current travel restrictions.

The Parliament position brings forward important changes to the original proposal:

  • A new name, โ€œEU COVID-19 Certificateโ€ has been agreed to make it clearer to EU citizens and also limit the certificatesโ€™ use to during the pandemic.
  • Free and accessible testing: Testing is absolutely key in the fight against COVID-19, and the requirement to conduct pre-departure tests (often PCR) should not create an economic distortion between travelers. With tests ranging from โ‚ฌ10 to โ‚ฌ150, it is clear that such high costs could become a deterrent to travel โ€“ in particular among families.
  • Full equality among vaccinated and tested citizens: No additional measures such as quarantine or further testing should be imposed on travelers presenting a valid โ€œEU COVID-19 Certificateโ€.

The proposed amendments send a strong political message from the Parliament on the urgency to restore free movement in the EU. This is not a privilege — it is a right as one of the pillars of the single market enshrined in the European treaties. Safely and swiftly re-establishing free movement is both possible and vitally important – not only for holidaymakers, but also for cross-border workers and citizens who will be able to visit their families more easily once the certificates are operational. Vaccination drives in Europe continue to gain momentum, withย 26.5% of EU citizens having received at least one dose, compared with 16% four weeks ago.

According to aย recent IATA survey, 72% of people want to travel to see family and friends as soon as possible. The sectors therefore urge swift negotiations and agreement by mid-May so that pilot testing and full implementation can take place in June. Time is of the essence, to offer EU citizens a much-needed breather after a year of lockdowns and travel restrictions which have negatively impacted consumersโ€™ mental health and well-being. Multipleย studiesย  show that travel has positive effects on mental and physical health thanks to human and nature connections, boosting peopleโ€™s energy and relieving stress and anxiety.

Deltaโ€™s Bill Lentsch talks about what customers need to know about flying now

Delta Air Lines issued this report for new customers returning to the skies:

As COVID-19 vaccinationsย and consumer demandย for travelย accelerateย asย summerย approaches,ย many Delta customers are taking to the skiesย and reclaiming their lives overย the next few monthsย โ€“ some for the first time in a long time.ย Bill Lentsch, Deltaโ€™s Chief Customer Experience Officer,ย answers six common questionsย about what things look like these days, both on the ground and in the air:

  1. How should I prepareย before my flight?ย

Bill:ย Travel has changed a lot in the last year, and the Deltaย team has been working hardย to provideย customers with theย digital toolsย theyย needย for a more seamless travel experience. Ourย newย Travel Planning Centerย isย a one-stop guide to manage travel restrictions, testing requirements and everything else alongย theย journey.ย Andย ourย updated, integratedย Delta Discover Mapย has more filters and featuresย to helpย customers decide where to go,ย allowingย them to book a ticket in just a couple of clicks.

Before yourย flight, make sure to download theย Fly Delta appย for quickย accessย toย yourย digital boarding passย andย important notifications about your trip. Ifย you need help on the go,ย you canโ€ฏmessage a Delta representativeโ€ฏinย the app or onโ€ฏdelta.comโ€ฏfor quick and convenient assistance.ย Donโ€™t forget to check your email for detailed information, guidance and tips on your upcoming trip.

  1. Is Delta adjusting any of itsย health and safetyย protocols as COVID-19 vaccinations increase?ย

Bill:ย Itโ€™s really encouraging to see and hear about so many people getting their vaccines lately. In fact,ย nearlyย 75 percent of our U.S. customers tell us that they will be vaccinated by early summer. Thatโ€™s incredible progress.ย Nevertheless, continuing to wearย a mask is one of the most important waysโ€‹ย Deltaย customers and employees can help prevent the spread of COVID-19, and we remain fully committed to our longstanding mask requirement, whichย isย in line with federal law. Starting in May, youโ€™ll start to see additional Delta employees positioned in airport lobbies toย provide assistanceย andย help remind you and your fellow customers to put on a mask or face covering as you enter the airport.

Those rigorous mask requirements, combined with all weโ€™ve learned about the virus this year with the help of our expert partnersย at Mayo Clinic and Emory, as well as our own Chief Health Officer Dr. Henry Ting,ย have given us the confidenceย toย evolve some of our other protocols:

  • As we begin toย make more seats availableย on May 1, youโ€™re likely to notice fewerย distancing stickers on airport floors,ย Delta Sky Clubs,ย gatehouseย seatingย andย jetwaysย to allow forย additionalย customersย in our airport spaces.ย Butย hand sanitizer stationsย andย plexiglass shields atโ€ฏDelta check-in counters, inย Clubsโ€ฏand at gate counters will all remain in place.
  • While our Global Cleanliness team pursues long-lasting surface coatings that allow forย sustained protectionย in flight,ย our aircraft interiors, check-in lobbies, self-service kiosks, Delta Sky Clubs, gate counters and baggage claim will still be thoroughly wiped down throughout the day. We will also continue to disinfect onboard aircraft, airport lobbies, jet bridges, gatehouses and Clubs with electrostatic spray each night, whichย takes into accountย recent CDC guidance on surface sanitization.
  • As weโ€™ve learned more about COVID-19, weโ€™ve been innovating on cleanliness and continuing toย evolveย ourย layersย ofย protection to offer you a safer, more flexible travel experience as partย ofย the Deltaย CareStandard.ย But even after the pandemic ends, cleanliness will continue to characterize the premium experience customers expect from Delta. You can rest assured that as we move forward, we will maintain our rigor around cleanliness. As Iโ€™ve said many times before, thereโ€™s really no finish line for this.
  • As a reminder, the air on all aircraft is still completely recirculated 10 to 30 times per hour with fresh, outside airย orย throughย industrial-gradeโ€ฏHEPA filters, which extract more than 99.99% of particles, including viruses.ย These are the same types of filters used in hospital operating rooms, and we replace them onboard twice as often as recommended.
  1. What else should I expect to see at the airport this summer?

Bill: From newly reopened airport concessions to a strengthened network to fly customers to more of the places they want to go, there are so many things to look forward to this summer as we welcome more of you back onboard. Central to all of this is working to keep people moving throughout airport experiences as efficiently as possible.

Many of you have missed our curbside bag-drop service, and we are excited to announce weโ€™ve begun the return of Sky Caps this month and ongoing into summer in most of our leisure markets as an extra option to help reduce crowding in the lobby.

TSA continues to hire security screening officers to ensure checkpoints are adequately staffed for the summer, and theyโ€™ll continue many of the safety and cleaning protocols they started during the pandemic well through the recovery, such as plexiglass protection and more touchless ID verification in select airports. And hereโ€™s my personal favorite travel tip: enroll inย TSA PreCheckย or CLEAR to speed up your security experience.

Finally, we know our customers have a renewed excitement to get back out into the world, and weโ€™re just as excited to connect them to it. While this isnโ€™t new, remember to arrive at least two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international trips to comfortably allow you make it to the gate on time.

  1. What’s the experience like in Delta Sky Clubs these days?

Bill: We are thrilled that all of ourย Delta Sky Clubsย will be open for guests by this summer. As we make more seats available onboard, Clubs will also be bringing back additional seating based on capacity needs and following local occupancy guidelines. You can also expect evolving food and beverage offerings in Clubs beginning in May and continuing throughout the spring and summer; many of our guests will experience our full complement of hot and cold fresh food stations with attendant service. Other select locations will reintroduce Chefโ€™s Tables featuring a hot, seasonal feature of the day, in addition to an enhanced grab-and-go selection of fresh foods, hot breakfast sandwiches and soups.

If you are traveling through Fort Lauderdale this summer, keep an eye out for our beautiful new Club opening at the end of June. Like all our Clubs, you can look forward to relaxing and recharging in the new, thoughtfully designed space featuring our award-winning beverage program, reimagined food offerings and other premium amenities delivered with care.

  1. What is the onboard experience like now? Are you resuming food and beverage service?

Bill: As Iโ€™ve mentioned, increased demand and vaccination rates has given us the confidence to not only open up more seats but also toย reintroduce onboard snack and beverage service. Itโ€™s been welcome news to our customers โ€“ so far, weโ€™re seeing double-digit improvements in our customer satisfaction scores in that category. Weโ€™re so glad youโ€™re already enjoying classic favorites and new treats like our Tip Top Proper Cocktails, which are complimentary to those 21 and up in First Class and Comfort+ and available for purchase in Main Cabin. By June, customers flying in Delta One or First Class on select domestic coast-to-coast flights will see hot food options return, and First Class customers on other key U.S. routes will enjoy fresh boxed meals beginning in early July.

U.S. routes will enjoy fresh boxed meals beginning in early July. With more service coming onboard, mask compliance is as important as ever. We want to remind all of you toย mask up when you arenโ€™t actively eating or drinking, in compliance with our mask requirement. In-flight entertainment content also continues to be updated. You wonโ€™t want to miss our lineup of award-winning shows, movies and podcasts coming onboard this summer. Plus, you can look forward to fast, reliable Wi-Fi onboard as we bring high-speed streaming-capable connectivity to more aircraft this summerย in partnership with Viasat.

  1. What’s the most important thing for me to know if I’m traveling this summer?

Bill:ย The most important thing to know is thatย youย are at the center ofย every decision we make. We are doing everything we can to make your trip as safeย and as easy asย possibleย so that you can make flying a part of the journey to look forward to.ย We are alwaysย listening toย your feedbackย and adjusting our processes, so please let us know if we ever miss the markย and feel free to tell usย whenย weย really โ€˜wowโ€™ you with our service, too. We are all in this together as weย build the future of travel.ย We appreciate your business and loyalty immensely. I assureย you,ย we will never take that for granted.

Brussels Airlines reports a loss of 70 million euros in first quarter

We fly you to the home of Tintin"

As a result of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, Brussels Airlines reported an adjusted EBIT of EUR -70 million for the first quarter, only a 9% decrease compared to the same period last year, which included January and February 2020, two โ€œnormalโ€ months ย before the Coronavirus reached Europe. The first quarter is traditionally the lowest performing one of the year in the aviation industry. The Belgian airlineโ€™s revenue fell by 76% year-on-year to EUR 55 million, while operating costs were brought down by 59% to EUR 130 million, in part due to lower production, but also thanks to cost-saving measures in its Reboot Plus program.

Between January and March, Brussels Airlines welcomed 192,000 passengers, a drop of 88% compared to the first quarter of 2020, when two out of the three months were โ€œnormalโ€ months without the impact of Covid-19. The airline operated 1,791 flights, also an 87% decrease. The average seat load factor fell by 15.3 percentage points to 58.2%.

The ban on non-essential travel issued by the Belgian government severely impacted both the Brussels Airlinesโ€™ medium-haul- ย and ย long-haul passenger numbers. The intercontinental traffic performed however better than the European operations due to the companyโ€™s focus on African routes with a stable demand in the VFR segment (Visiting Friends & Relatives) and at the level of cargo, especially in terms of medical supply transport.

Brussels Airlines’ revenue fell by 76% year-on-year to EUR 55 million in the first quarter of 2021 as a result of the Corona crisis, while operating revenue was 76% lower year-on-year at EUR 60 million.

Operating expenses decreased by 59% to EUR 130 million primarily due to the volume-related drop in material expenses. Despite a large proportion of fixed costs, cost reductions were made thanks to a near completion of the restructuring phase of the Reboot Plus program.

Brussels Airlinesโ€™ Adjusted EBIT decreased accordingly by 9% to EUR -70 million (previous year: EUR -64 million). The EBIT improved by 25% to likewise EUR -70 million (previous year: EUR -93 million), although the previous year’s figure was impacted by impairment losses on aircraft and rights-of-use of aircraft amounting to EUR 29 million.

Within its Reboot Plus transformation program Brussels Airlines has almost completed the restructuring phase which reduces the fleet size by 30% and staff numbers by 25%. Among other additional measures in this program, new collective labor agreements have been in force since January 2021 for all employee groups, generating a competitive cost structure at the level of the personnel costs. The Reboot Plus program, targeting a structural 8% EBIT margin by 2024, now enters a second phase, a phase of strategic investment in customer servicing, in efficiency, employee development ย and in tools in order to create a long-term profitable future for the company.

Since the beginning of the Coronavirus crisis, Brussels Airlines has strictly adapted its flight capacity to respond as closely as possible to the market demand in order to safeguard its cash position. Thanks to this very proactive and restrictive capacity management, Brussels Airlines was able to maintain cash-positive flight operations every week since its restart on 15 June 2020.

Currently Brussels Airlines is gradually building up its flight capacity to be able to provide a flight offer in line with the expected demand for the summer holiday season (on average 65% of its 2019 capacity), with a focus on the leisure segment and of course its large African offer.
