atmosfair airline Index 2018

UNFCCC Climate Change Conference 2018 in Katowice: Atmosfair presents the climate ranking of the world ฬs largest airlines:

The atmosfair airline Index compares and ranks the carbon efficiency of the 200 largest airlines of the world. The formula contain for every flight the aircraft type, engines, winglets, seating and freight capacity as well as load factors for both passengers and co-loaded freight. Using detailed sources from authorities and official statistics, specialised data service providers and computer models used by aircraft engineers, the COโ‚‚ emissions of an airline can be calculated at an error margin of less than two percent.

The objective of atmosfair is, to make climate efficiency a factor of competition among the airlines. It can only benefit climate protection, if the COโ‚‚-performance of the various airlines are brought to light and into the public.

Car drivers have long been able to inform themselves about the COโ‚‚ emissions of a car before purchasing it; however, air passengers are left in the dark when it comes to choosing the most climate-friendly airline. The Airline Index sheds light upon this matter. In the index, every airline receives between 0 and 100 efficiency points, differentiated by flight length (short, medium and long).

This tool enables passengers to compare airlines offering flights to particular destinations and choose the airline that produces the least COโ‚‚ emissions.

For corporate clients, atmosfair offers specific analyses of individual routes. It allows for climate-conscious enterprises to identify the COโ‚‚ efficiency of different airlines on the routes that their employees fly regularly.

Fastjet (Johannesburg) warned on Friday, December 7, it is facing a financial crisis and could be facing administration (bankruptcy) and a reorganization if its cash flow does not improve. The airline warned it is down to just enough capital to fly for another seven days according to the Standard.

Finnair announces first phase partners for its biofuel and CO2 offset service

Finnair has made this announcement:

Air travellers are increasingly interested in reducing the CO2 emissions of their flights. Finnair announced last summer that as of early 2019 it will start offering its customers a new service allowing customers to offset the CO2 emissions of their flights by funding emissions reduction projects or carbon sinks, or by supporting the use of biofuels.

Finnair has now selected its first partners for its offset service: For sustainable biofuels, Finnairโ€™s partner will be the Dutch SkyNRG company (www.skynrg.com), and for emission reduction projects, Finnair will partner with the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO, www.nefco.org), an international financial institution backed by the Nordic states. Finnair will introduce the CO2 offsetting service to its customers in early 2019, and the service can be purchased through Finnairโ€™s website.

โ€œWe are very happy to be able to partner with SkyNRG and NEFCO on this important initiative,โ€ says Kati Ihamรคki, Director, Corporate Sustainability at Finnair. โ€œWe conducted a survey on how our customers view CO2 emission reductions, and biofuels and carbon sinks were the preferred means for reducing CO2 emissions โ€“ therefore it was a logical choice for us to start looking into how we could offer these options for our customers.โ€

SkyNRG is the global market leader for sustainable aviation fuel and its biofuel, which is made from used cooking oil, is sourced at World Energyโ€™s Paramount refinery in Los Angeles, California.

Finnair is a part of the initiative driven by Shell, SkyNRG, World Energy, San Francisco Airport and several other airlines, which aims to pave the way for a longer term, more resilient supply chain for sustainable aviation fuels, and thus supporting the industryโ€™s common targets for CO2 emission reduction.

Flights flown by Finnair with biofuel will be determined by the uptake of the service by Finnair customers. Biofuel has a reduction potential of 60-80%, compared to conventional jet fuel, but its price is currently three to five times the price of conventional jet fuel.

โ€œFinnair fully supports the industryโ€™s common goal for carbon emission reductions. Advancing the use of biofuel is an important step towards our target, which is carbon neutral growth,โ€ adds Kati Ihamรคki.

For emission reductions, Finnair will partner with NEFCO, a financial institution established by Nordic Governments to finance sustainable green growth and climate projects.

Finnair customers will be able to offset the CO2 emissions of their flights by funding an emissions reduction project identified by NEFCO in Mozambique, where efficient cookstoves are taken into use to reduce deforestation and emissions.

Finnair is committed to the aviation industryโ€™s common goals, which are to achieve carbon neutral growth by 2020, and to halve the CO2 emissions by 2050, compared to the 2005 level. On top of this, Finnair has set its own targets for CO2 emission reduction. Finnair reduces CO2 emissions of its own operations by using modern aircraft, by flying the shortest possible routes, by optimising flight speed and altitude, and by reducing the weight taken on aircraft. Finnair is also a part of the EUโ€™s Emissions Trading Scheme. The aviation industry is also committed to a global emission offsetting scheme (CORSIA, Carbon offsetting and reduction scheme for international aviation), which will be applicable as of 2019.

Wataniya Airways’ AOC is revoked

Wataniya Airways Air Operators Certificate (AOC) has been cancelled.

Theย Directorate General for Civil Aviation (DGCA) of Kuwait in September 2018ย suspended the license of Wataniya Airways for three months.

The DGCA warned that if the airline failed to address the operational issues that led to flight cancellations in August 2018 would lead to a permanent cancellation.

After three months the DGCA has now finally cancelled the AOC of Wataniya Airways.

The airline resumed operations in July 2017 and operated a fleet of four Airbus A320 Family aircraft.

Previously at the Farnborough Airshow, the airline placed a firm order for 10 Embraer E195-E2s and converted an earlier MOU for 25 Airbus A320neos to a firm order.
