Air France’s new Airbus A220-300 enters service

"Le Bourget", 1st A220, delivered September 28, 2021

Air France made this announcement:

  • First commercial flights to Berlin and Venice, then Barcelona, Madrid and Milan to follow in the next few days;
  • The highest level of comfort in the Business and Economy cabins;
  • The Airbus A220-300, a major asset for improving Air France’s economic and environmental performance: cost per seat reduced by 10%, 20% less CO2 emissions and 34% less noise emissions.

On October 31, 2021, Air France’s Airbus A220-300 welcomed its very first customers, with two flights from Paris-Charles de Gaulle to Berlin (Germany) and Venice (Italy). These flights were operated by the Airbus A220-300 “Le Bourget”, which was delivered to the airline at the end of September and is the first of 60 aircraft ordered by Air France to progressively replace its Airbus A318s, A319s and some A320s by the end of 2025.

Over the next few days, the Airbus A220-300 will be rolled out on routes to Barcelona and Madrid (November 1), as well as Milan-Linate (November 6). During the 2021-2022 winter season, the aircraft will gradually expand its network to Bologna, Rome (Italy), Lisbon (Portugal) and Copenhagen (Denmark) as new aircraft are delivered.

The highest level of in-flight comfort

The Air France Airbus A220-300 has 148 seats, in a 3-2 seat configuration (5 seats across) offering 80% of customers a window or aisle seat. Up to eight rows at the front of the aircraft can be dedicated to Business class customers, who have an empty seat next to them and enjoy priority boarding and deplaning.

Its leather reclining seats – the widest on the market at 48 cm – are equipped with USB A and C sockets, a solid tray table, a cup holder and a tablet or smartphone holder integrated into the backrest.

The aircraft is equipped with the latest innovations, with large panoramic windows, mood lighting to accompany the different phases of the flight, and spacious baggage compartments for easier access. It is equipped with Air France Connect, the airline’s Wi-Fi offer, which is accessible throughout the flight and offers three passes, including one that is free of charge for sending and receiving messages during the flight.

The catering offer is adapted to the flight time and depends on the time of departure. In the Business cabin, each customer is served a generous breakfast or cold meal signed by Franรงois Adamski, Servair corporate chef, Meilleur ouvrier de France and Bocuse d’or. A range of wines and champagnes chosen by Paolo Basso, world’s best sommelier in 2013, and a wide selection of hot and cold drinks complete the package. In the Economy cabin, biscuits or sandwiches including a vegetarian choice are available. A wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages is also available.

A latest-generation aircraft to enhance Air France’s performance

The latest jewel in Air Franceโ€™s medium-haul fleet, the Airbus A220-300 is the most innovative and efficient single-aisle aircraft in its category. It embodies Air France’s commitment to improving its economic and environmental performance, with a cost reduction per seat of 10% compared to the aircraft it replaces and unrivalled energy performance, a 20% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 34% reduced noise footprint.

These characteristics will play a decisive role in reducing Air France’s environmental footprint and achieving its sustainable development objectives. By 2030, the airline will have reduced its overall CO2 emissions per passenger/km by 50% compared to 2005, or 15% in absolute terms. Air France is also committed to working with all its stakeholders and the public authorities to achieve the climate target of zero net CO2 emissions by 2050.

The renewal of the fleet is the main source of decarbonization available in the short term. Air France invests 1 billion euros every year to integrate the latest generation aircraft, Airbus A350-900 on long-haul routes and Airbus A220-300 on short and medium-haul routes, with a reduction in CO2 emissions of between 20 and 25%.

JetBlue orders 60 Airbus A220-300 aircraft to replace the Embraer 190 fleet

JetBlue Airways today announced it has ordered 60 Airbus A220-300 aircraft โ€“ previously called the Bombardier CS300 โ€“ for delivery beginning in 2020, with the option for 60 additional aircraft beginning in 2025.

The aircraft will be powered by Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan (GTF) PW1500G engines. The order follows JetBlueโ€™s intensive review aimed at ensuring the best financial performance of the airlineโ€™s fleet while providing maximum flexibility to execute its network strategy and enhancing its industry-leading customer experience.

As part of the agreement, JetBlue has also reshaped its Airbus orderbook, including converting its order for 25 A320neos to the A321neo and adjusting the delivery schedule.

โ€œWe are evolving our fleet for the future of JetBlue, and the A220-300โ€™s impressive range and economics offer us flexibility and support our key financial and operating priorities,โ€ said Robin Hayes, chief executive officer, JetBlue. โ€œAs we approach our 20th anniversary, the A220, combined with our A321 and restyled A320 fleet, will help ensure we deliver the best onboard experience to customers and meet our long-term financial targets as we continue disciplined growth into the future.โ€

โ€œJetBlueโ€™s selection of the A220 aircraft as a complement to its growing A320 Family fleet is a tremendous endorsement โ€“ both of the A220 itself and of the way these two aircraft can work together to provide airline network flexibility and a great customer experience,โ€ said Eric Schulz, chief commercial officer for Airbus. โ€œJetBlue will be able to leverage the unbeatable efficiency of both the A321neo and the A220-300, as well as taking advantage of the roomiest and most customer-pleasing cabins of any aircraft in their size categories.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re honored by JetBlueโ€™s confidence in selecting the A220-300 aircraft which adds to their existing order of the A320neo family of aircraft both powered by the Pratt & Whitney GTF engine,โ€ said Chris Calio, president of commercial engines at Pratt & Whitney. โ€œWeโ€™ve been powering JetBlue with our V2500ยฎ engines since they started operations in 2000. We now look forward to also supporting JetBlue across their two new fuel-efficient, next-generation aircraft platforms.โ€

State-of-the-Art Technology & Enhanced Customer Experience

The A220-300โ€™s spacious and comfortable cabin makes it the perfect fit for JetBlue, which has consistently led U.S.airlines in the onboard experience. The A220โ€™s cabin design offers customers the best inflight experience with wider seats, spacious overhead bins and extra-large windows that offer a great view from the sky and on the ground.

The aircraftโ€™s advanced aerodynamics combined with a specially designed Pratt & Whitney engine help the aircraft deliver approximately 40 percent lower fuel burn per seat than JetBlueโ€™s current E190 fleet, a reduced noise footprint and decreased emissions.

Thorough Analysis Determined Path to Greatest Value

JetBlue conducted a comprehensive review of multiple options for its 100-seat aircraft. In addition to its financial analysis, JetBlue invited frontline leaders and crewmembers, including technical operations, to evaluate the aircraft in person at JetBlueโ€™s JFK hangar.

JetBlue plans to phase in the A220-300 as a replacement for JetBlueโ€™s existing fleet of 60 Embraer E190 aircraft. The aircraftโ€™s range and seating capacity will add flexibility to JetBlueโ€™s network strategy as it targets growth in its focus cities, including options to schedule it for transcontinental flying. The aircraft also opens the door to new markets and routes that would have been unprofitable with JetBlueโ€™s existing fleet.

โ€œWe expect the A220 to be an important long-term building block in our goal to deliver superior margins and create long-term shareholder value,โ€ said Steve Priest, executive vice president and chief financial officer, JetBlue. โ€œWe are confident the A220 will perform well in every aspect, including network, cost, maintenance, or customer experience. Simply put โ€“ our crewmembers, customers and owners are going to love this aircraft.โ€

While the E190 has played an important role in JetBlueโ€™s network since 2005, the airlineโ€™s fleet review determined that the A220โ€™s economics would allow the airline to lower costs in the coming years. The A220 was designed by previous manufacturer Bombardier to seat between 130 and 160 customers, enabling financial and network advantages over the current 100-seat Embraer configuration.

Seamless Transition With Built-In Flexibility

โ€œThe diligence that went into this analysis from teams across JetBlue speaks to the aircraftโ€™s importance for the next generation of our airline,โ€ Priest said. โ€œWe expect a seamless transition, and weโ€™ve worked with Airbus and Bombardier to build in maximum flexibility to the order book as market conditions shift over time.โ€

JetBlue plans to take delivery of the first five aircraft in 2020, the airlineโ€™s 20th year of service. Deliveries will continue through 2025. JetBlue expects it will begin to reduce flying with its existing fleet of E190 aircraft beginning in 2020. The phase out will continue gradually through approximately 2025.

Options for 60 additional aircraft begin in 2025, and JetBlue retains flexibility to convert certain aircraft to the smaller A220-100 if it chooses. Both members of the A220 Family share commonality in more than 99 percent of their replaceable parts as well as the same family of engines.

JetBlueโ€™s A220 aircraft will be assembled in Mobile, Alabama.
