Want to fly on a Boeing 747-400? – Hurry up, your options are narrowing

Large wide body airliners (like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747) have been hard to fill for airlines since the COVID-19 pandemic exploded around the world this spring. Many airlines have parked their Jumbos and some have moved up the planned retirement dates of the Boeing 747-400.

If you want to fly on the passenger type you better hurry. Other than governments and cargo operators, finding a passenger Boeing 747-400 flight is a challenge right now.

Some aircraft in storage will probably become active again when the passenger demand dictates the use of large wide body aircraft again. If the demand does not come back quickly it will probably mean the end of those aircraft in storage.

Below is the current situation based on the latest information for passenger airlines (corrections and additions are always welcome) (subject to change depending on returning traffic):

Air Atlanta Icelandic – The charter and ACMI specialist airline has five passenger 747-400s. Three are currently stored and two are operating on ACMI assignments.

Air China – Two 747-400s are operational (B-2445 and B-2447) but they stay mostly in China these days. Another aircraft (B-2472) is operated for the government. Air China also continues to operate the newer 747-800.

Asiana Airlines – Only one 747-400 passenger aircraft (HL7428) is active these days so the type is probably ready to be retired this year.

Atlas Air – The charter and ACMI specialist airline currently has three active passenger 747-400s (N464MC, N465MC and N480MC). Assuming charter demand continues this airline could be one of the last passenger operators.

British Airways – The former largest 747-400 passenger operator has stored all 28 aircraft pending a return of passenger demand. For now, G-CIVO operated the last revenue flight (BA9116 LOS-LHR) on May 11, 2020.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines – As previously reported, PH-BFT operated the last regular revenue flight (KL686 MEX-AMS) on March 29, 2020. However the Jumbo was brought out of retirement to operate special medical cargo flights (along with PH-BFV and PH-BFW) during the pandemic. All 3 are expected to be re-retired again this year.

Lufthansa – The company was originally planning to retire the 747-400 fleet in 2025. That all changed with the pandemic. All 8 that remain operational are now in storage pending a return of passenger demand. D-ABVX operated the last 747-400 passenger revenue flight (LH637 RUH-FRA) on May 8, 2020.

Rossiya Russian Airlines – The Russian carrier parked all nine of its Boeing 747-400s. EI-XLF operated the last revenue flight (FV5876 HKT-SVO) on March 29, 2020.

Wamos Air – The Spanish carrier has four active Boeing 747-400s. The carrier is planning to operate the type until 2023 but this could change with lower demand.

Recent 747-400 fleet retirements:

Air India – Four 747-400s are parked and not likely to return. VT-ESO operated the last revenue flight (AI966 HYD-BOM) on March 15, 2020.

China Airlines – Four passenger 747-400s are in storage and are not likely to return. B-18215 operated the last revenue flight (CI916 HKG-TPE) on March 15, 2020.

Corsair International – The French carrier parked its three passenger Boeing 747-400s in March and they are not likely to return. F-GTUI operated the last revenue flight (S5 927 PTP-ORY) on March 26, 2020,

El Al Israel Airlines – 4X-ELC operated the last passenger 747-400 revenue flight (LY1747 FCO-TLV) on November 3, 2019.

Iraqi Airways – The last passenger Boeing 747-400 (YI-ASA) operated the last revenue flight (IA3114, MED-BGW) on February 2, 2020.

Korean Air – HL7402 operated the last 747-400 passenger revenue flight (KE630 DPS-ICN) on February 29, 2020. Korean Air continues to operate the newer 747-800.

Mahan Air – The Iranian airline was recently again operating EP-MNB (February 2020) but it appears to be no longer flying, probably due to the embargo.

QANTAS Airways – The flag carrier decided to early retire the type due to a much lower demand. VH-OEE operated the last revenue flight (QF28 SCL-SYD) on March 29, 2020.

Thai Airways International – The flag carrier is in reorganization and is cutting costs and reducing aircraft types. HS-TGA operated the last 747-400 revenue flight (TG476 SYD-BKK) on March 26, 2020.

Virgin Atlantic Airways – G-VROS operated the last revenue flight (VS608 LAX-LHR) on March 31, 2020.

Lufthansa Group airlines welcomed around 12.2 million passengers on board in April 2018

In April 2018, the airlines of the Lufthansa Group welcomed around 12.2 million passengers. This shows an increase of 9.1% compared to the previous year’s month, although last year’s German Easter holidays fell in April. The available seat kilometers were up 7.4% over the previous year, at the same time, sales increased by six percent. The seat load factor decreased by 1.1 percentage points compared to April 2017 to 81.2%. In the first four months of 2018, the Group continues to record levels of capacity, capacity utilization and passenger numbers.

The currency-adjusted sales environment developed positively in April compared to the previous year.

Cargo capacity increased 6.9% year-on-year, while cargo sales were up 3.4% in revenue tonne-kilometer terms. As a result, the Cargo load factor showed a corresponding reduction, decreasing 2.3 percentage points in the month to 67.2%.

Network Airlines
The Network Airlines Lufthansa German Airlines, Swiss and Austrian Airlines carried 8.9 million passengers in April, 6.1% more than in the prior-year period. Compared to the previous year, the available seat kilometers increased by 5.4% in April. The sales volume was up 3.8% over the same period, decreasing seat load factor by 1.2 percentage points to 81.2%.

Lufthansa German Airlines transported 5.9 million passengers in April, a 4.7% increase compared to the same month last year. A 3.8% increase in seat kilometers in April corresponds to a 1.7% increase in sales. Furthermore, the seat load factor was 80.7%, therefore 1.7 percentage points below the prior-year’s level.

Eurowings Group
The Eurowings Group with the airlines Eurowings (including Germanwings) and Brussels Airlines carried around 3.3 million passengers in April. Among this total, three million passengers were on short-haul flights and 250,000 flew long-haul. This amounts to an increase of 18.3% in comparison to the previous year. April capacity was 17.9% above its prior-year level, while its sales volume was up 17.0%, resulting in a decreased seat load factor by 0.7 percentage points of 81.2%.

On short-haul services the Airlines raised capacity 20.9% and increased sales volume by 20.3%, resulting in a 0.4 percentage points decrease in seat load factor of 80.3%, compared to April 2017. The seat load factor for the long-haul services decreased by 0.9 percentage points to 83.2% during the same period, following a 12.0% increase in capacity and a 10.8% rise in sales volume, compared to the previous year.

Lufthansa Group assigns wide body aircraft to Berlin routes

Lufthansa Group has made this announcement:

In order to fulfil the unusually high current demand for tickets from Berlin to Frankfurt, Munich, Zürich and Vienna, three airlines of the Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines) will replace the usually scheduled short-haul aircraft with wide-body aircraft for a short-term in October. In addition, all other scheduled flights from these hubs to Berlin will almost all be flown with the largest short-haul aircraft of the Lufthansa Group (Airbus A321) during the period from October 23-25.

With the use of the larger aircraft, far more passengers can be transported, so that as many travel wishes of Berliners can be fulfilled as possible. The extended flights from Berlin have been scheduled to enable passengers to conveniently reach many global transfer flights of the Lufthansa Group airlines via the airports Frankfurt, Munich, Zürich and Vienna.

Lufthansa is thus offering a daily flight from Frankfurt to Berlin with an Airbus A340-300 from October 23-25, 2017. From Munich, there will be an Airbus A340-600 flight once a day from Munich from October 23-24, 2017.

Swiss is planning to replace one flight from Zürich to Berlin with an Airbus A330-300 on October 24-25, 2017.

Austrian Airlines will use a Boeing 767 from Vienna to Berlin on October 24, 2017.

The cabin equipment of the wide-body aircraft is the same as for any long-haul flight of the Lufthansa Group airlines. The service will also be the same as that offered by Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian Airlines in the respective travel class for flights to and from Berlin.

The use of larger aircraft for this period are not the only measures taken by the airlines in the Lufthansa Group to cope with the strong demand and the pending shut down of Airberlin. In September, Lufthansa had already decided to use a Boeing 747-400 during high-peak times from Frankfurt to Berlin. The jumbo has thus visited Tegel more than 60 times.

In addition, Lufthansa will connect Berlin and New York four times a week from November 8, 2017.

Lufthansa and its flight attendants reach agreement on a new contract

Lufthansa issued this statement:

On July 5, 2016 in Berlin, Lufthansa and the independent flight attendants’ organisation UFO have announced that they are accepting the mediator’s recommendation by former Brandenburg Prime Minister Matthias Platzeck.

The parties had previously spent approximately half a year negotiating all open collective bargaining agreements and a wide range of other issues.

The details of the arbitration agreement:

Long-term no-strike agreement

The collective labour agreement will be active until June 30, 2019; the collective agreements regarding pensions and transitional payments will be active until 2023. In addition to this, the parties have also agreed upon a number of conflict resolution mechanisms which will remain in place until 2023. The company can, for example, appeal to a mediator when a total strike is announced, thereby converting a possible labor conflict into a mandatory arbitration process.

Pensions and transitional payments

Lufthansa and UFO have agreed upon a new system regarding pensions and transitional payments. It allows the group to shift the second-largest group of employees from a defined-benefit system to a defined-contribution system. Lufthansa and Verdi had already agreed last November to move ground staff to a defined-contribution system. This switch – from a fixed, predefined benefit outlined in the pension scheme to a fixed premium, which then bears interest on the capital market – allows the company to lower the costs and risks for the schemes. In future, Lufthansa will contribute a total of 5.2 percent of eligible income to the pension schemes of cabin staff. This is the same benefit the ground staff of the group receive. Claims that have already been acquired in the company pension scheme at the time of the transition to the defined-contribution system will be retained in full. The new system still makes it possible for cabin staff to retire from airline service when they turn 55. New employees will receive no contributions to pension and transitional payment schemes for the first five years of their employment, unless they have completed a specific training course on the bachelor level. New employees will not receive contributions to the transitional payment scheme, even after five years, if they do not complete this training. In future, employees can use unused transitional payment schemes to increase the benefits of their company pension scheme. Coverage for all employees in case of permanent flight disability will remain in place. The collective labour agreement will be active for 10 years as of 1 January 2014.

Compensation

The circa 19,000 cabin employees will receive a wage increase of one percent as of October 1, 2016, and an additional two percent as of January 1, 2018. The collective labor agreement for wages will remain in place until June 30, 2019.

Compensation structure

Lufthansa and UFO have agreed on a new qualification-based compensation structure for cabin staff. The company will offer an eighteen-month training course at the bachelor level in cooperation with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. This will allow Lufthansa to further increase the already high standard of qualification and service of its staff. In future, only flight attendants who have completed this training will be eligible for compensation above level eight, which corresponds to a basic compensation of 2,150 Euros per month. Sustainable strengthening of competitive position through cost monitoring

Together, Lufthansa and UFO have defined a target corridor for cabin personnel costs. Personnel costs are to be lowered by ten percent per block hour compared to the currently projected development. Guaranteed Employment

Employment is guaranteed for all Lufthansa cabin employees until 2021, as the company has ruled out redundancies for the duration of five years. In addition, it has been agreed that

Lufthansa airplanes may not be operated with external cabin staff until 2023. Lufthansa offers good job prospects in the cabin in any case. The company already announced in January that it intends to hire 1,400 new flight attendants this year.

Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa) (Frankfurt) has made this announcement about its hiring plans for 2016:

The Lufthansa Group is hiring more than 4,000 new employees in 2016, giving the organization a top position amongst the leading German companies. “We are proud that yet again this year the companies of the Lufthansa Group are able to offer many people an exciting new outlook and attractive working conditions in the aviation industry. Flight Attendants

The main focus of the new recruiting will be the flight attendant training. In 2016 approximately 2,800 flight attendants will be hired in various locations and for different airlines of the Lufthansa Group:

  • Lufthansa 1,400 (800 in Frankfurt and 600 in Munich)
  • Swiss 800 (in Zurich)
  • Eurowings 360 (in Vienna, Düsseldorf and Hamburg)
  • Austrian Airlines 200 (in Vienna)
  • Lufthansa CityLine 30 (in Munich)

Lufthansa Flight Attendants

Lufthansa flight attendants will start in the Frankfurt and Munich hubs on short, medium and long- haul destinations. Basically Lufthansa offers two kinds of entry-level contracts:

  • A permanent position with a part time factor of 83 percent in which flight attendants fly full time in summer and part time in winter.
  • A two year contract with a part time factor of 50 percent which can be extended once every two years. In this model flight attendants work full time in summer followed by six months free time. Entry to this type of contract is possible from November to January.

In both models salary and social insurance are paid over twelve months. New employees take training courses over twelve weeks in order to become flight attendants. This year the Lufthansa Group is hiring 240 pilots, of which 140 will be for Eurowings in Austria and Germany and 100 for Austrian Airlines. Both first officers and captains are wanted. Further pilots are needed for SunExpress in Germany. The joint subsidiary of Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines operates long-haul flights on behalf of Eurowings. Service Staff at Munich Airport

This year the Lufthansa Station in Munich is looking for 150 new employees for their passenger service at Munich Airport. The new colleagues will be deployed in taking care of passengers at the check-in or at the Lufthansa transfer and ticket counters in the multiple award winning Terminal 2.
