Boeing is ready to deliver 787 pilot training around the world

Boeing (Chicago) has achieved multiple qualifications for its worldwide network of 787 training campuses. The qualifications mean Boeing Flight Services has training devices that are ready to be used with an approved training course in locations around the globe.

Full-flight simulators and other flight training devices for commercial pilot training require qualifications from each airline’s home country regulatory agency. Boeing is qualifying its network of 787 training devices with multiple regulators in order to allow airlines the maximum options and regional locations for training their crews.

Boeing operates 787 training campuses in five locations: Seattle, Singapore, Tokyo, London Gatwick and Shanghai. As part of the qualification process, Boeing demonstrated, with the regulators’ concurrence, that the training devices located at the five campuses around the world were similar or identical in the way they operate.

Boeing to paint the Charleston-assembled Dreamliners in Amarillo, Texas

Boeing (Chicago) has selected Leading Edge Aviation Services to paint the 787 Dreamliners assembled at Boeing’s new North Charleston, SC, final assembly and delivery facility.

Leading Edge will perform the work at its Amarillo, Texas facility where other wide-body airplanes are painted. The company, which specializes in commercial and military aircraft painting, will apply final paint and customer livery to all 787 Dreamliners delivered from the Boeing South Carolina facility.

As 787 Dreamliners complete final assembly and prepare for delivery, the airplanes will make the 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) flight from North Charleston to Amarillo to be painted. The airplanes will then return to South Carolina for final delivery to customers from around the world.

Production in the new South Carolina 787 Dreamliner facility is on schedule to begin mid-2011, with first delivery scheduled for 2012.

Boeing 787-881 N7874 (ZA004) completes the 1,000th 787 program test flight

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) announced today that the pictured 787-881 N7874 (msn 40693) Dreamliner, designated as ZA004, made the 1,000th 787 flight the previous day, marking another milestone in the flight test program. There are seven airplanes participating in flight testing. The landing of 787 flight test airplane ZA004 (above), just after 1 p.m. MST (1300) at Yuma International Airport, counted as the official 1,000th flight.

Boeing to fly two 787 Dreamliners back to Seattle as the investigation continues

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) is going to fly two 787 test Dreamliners (ZA001 – N787BA and ZA005 – N787FT) back to Seattle.

Boeing has not reached any decision on when its 787s will resume testing. The investigation continues.

Boeing suspends flight testing activities for the 787

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) yesterday (November 10) suspended all 787 Dreamliner flight testing activities pending the outcome of the investigation of the incident involving test aircraft ZA002. Boeing issued the following statement:

“During approach to Laredo, Texas, on November 9, 2010, airplane ZA002 lost primary electrical power as a result of an onboard electrical fire. Backup systems, including the deployment of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), functioned as expected and allowed the crew to complete a safe landing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by Boeing.

The pilots executed a safe landing and at all times had positive control of the airplane and all of the information necessary to perform that safe landing.

Initial inspection appears to indicate that a power control panel in the aft electronics bay will need to be replaced on ZA002. We are inspecting the power panel and surrounding area near that panel to determine if other repairs will be necessary.

We have retrieved flight data from the airplane and are analyzing it in Seattle. This process will take several days. We are committed to finding the cause quickly but will not rush the technical team in its efforts.

The team was conducting monitoring of the Nitrogen Generation System at the time of the incident but there is no reason to suspect that the monitoring or earlier testing of that system had anything to do with the incident.

Consistent with our internal processes, until we better understand the cause of the incident on ZA002, we have decided to postpone flight test activities on other airplanes. Ground test activities will be conducted until flight test resumes.

Likewise, we cannot determine the impact of this event on the overall program schedule until we have worked our way through the data. Teams have been working through the night and will continue to work until analysis is complete and a path forward is determined.”

Boeing 787-881 N787EX (ZA002) makes an emergency landing at Laredo with smoke in the cabin

Boeing’s (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) 787-881 N787EX (msn 34488) designated test aircraft ZA002 in ANA colors made an emergency landing at Laredo, TX yesterday (November 9).

The Dreamliner was on final approach to the Laredo on a fight from Yuma, AZ, when the crew reported smoke. The aircraft landed safely with 42 people on board. The passengers and crew exited the aircraft via the emergency chutes according to this Reuters report.

Boeing puts its sixth 787 Dreamliner into testing, but returns early

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) yesterday (October 4) added its sixth 787 Dreamliner to the flight test fleet. The airliner made its first flight from Paine Field inย Everett, WA.ย The airplane, 787-8 N787ZA (msn 40695), disgnated as “ZA006”, is the second 787 equipped with General Electric GEnx engines.

Captainsย Christine Walshย andย Bill Robersonย were at the controls during the 1 hour and 4 minute flight. The airplane landed at Boeing Field atย 12:45 p.m. (1245) (Pacific time).

In addition to achieving first flight of ZA006, the Boeing test team has completed a number of flight test milestones in recent weeks.

Boeing wrapped up a series of natural and artificial icing tests, meeting all requirements with no changes required. Pilots reported that the airplane continues to handle well even in the presence of ice.

Flight loads survey testing, which demonstrates the pressure distribution on the airplane structure throughout the phases of flight in a variety of configurations, also has been completed. The team conducted this testing on ZA004 primarily at the airport atย Victorville, CA.ย Analysis of this testing continues.

A dramatic series of tests that stress the airplane’s brakes, called maximum brake energy testing, was completed in late September at Edwards Air Force Base, also inย California. ZA001 conducted this testing as well as a series of extreme takeoff and landing conditions including minimum takeoff speed testing. Earlier in the month, ZA001 completed wet runway testing atย Roswell, NM.

ZA003 flew toย Glasgow, MT, to complete community noise testing. All results were within expectations.

As a result of these tests and others, all takeoff performance and handling characteristics testing is complete for the initial version of the 787. Additional testing will be required for 787s equipped with GE engines.

The 787 flight test program has logged more than 1,900 hours over 620 flights and completed more than 65 percent of the flight test conditions for 787s with Rolls-Royce engines.

Equally important to the testing required in the air is the ground testing required to certify a new airplane. Boeing has completed well over 4,000 hours of ground testing on the same airplanes that are in the flight test program.

In addition, fatigue testing has started at a test rig inย Everett. Fifteen flights have been simulated. Federal regulations require Boeing to conduct twice as many flight cycles as any airplane in revenue service. Boeing plans to have completed 10,000 flight cycles prior to first delivery.

ANA changes 15 Dreamliner orders to 787-9s

ANA (All Nippon Airways (Tokyo) has decided to change 15 of its current orders for the Boeing 787-8 aircraft to the 787-9 model. ANA currently has a total of 55 orders for the Dreamliner.

The 787-9 aircraft is an extended body version of the 787-8 model, appropriate for short, mid-haul and long-haul international routes. The model will also meet the increasing need for 400 seat-capacity aircraft for domestic routes, and will further improve the flexibility of our fleet and network planning. Furthermore, like the 787-8 model, it is a highly fuel efficient aircraft which will enable ANA to reduce operating costs and carbon dioxide emission.

Boeing conducts remote 787 testing

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charles) is conducting remote testing of its 787 test aircraft. Four of the five Boeing 787 flight test airplanes are conducting remote test operations this week. ZA005 continues testing from its base of operations in Seattle.

ZA001, the first 787, is taking a break from operations out of Edwards Air Force Base in California for a week’s worth of testing in Roswell, NM. This is ZA001’s second visit to Roswell. Last month the airplane conducted wet-runway testing there. Testing in the days ahead will include rejected-takeoff conditions. ZA001 has been on remote deployment to Edwards Air Force Base for several weeks, with a focus on takeoff- and landing-performance conditions.

The second 787 is conducting high-latitude and cold-weather testing at Keflavik Airport in Iceland.

The hot weather in Yuma, AZ, with temperatures in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius), has provided the necessary conditions for another set of tests happening on ZA003. Its deployment is expected to last about another week.

ZA004 has spent an extended time operating out of Victorville, CA, conducting flight loads survey testing. This testing measures external pressure distributions throughout the flight envelope. ZA004 is set to do testing in Glasgow, MT, after it wraps up its California testing.

Artificial ice shapes have been affixed to the leading edges of the wings and horizontal and vertical stabilizer of the fifth 787 to complete another group of tests required for certification. Ice-shape testing verifies the airplane’s performance in the presence of ice. Natural ice testing has already occurred.

The 787 flight test fleet has conducted more than 1,650 hours of flying over more than 540 flights.

Boeing delays the first 787 delivery to ANA to mid first quarter 2011

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) said that it now expects delivery of the first 787 to ANA in the middle of the first quarter 2011.

The delivery date revision follows an assessment of the availability of an engine needed for the final phases of flight test this fall.

While Boeing works closely with Rolls-Royce to expedite engine availability, flight testing across the test fleet continues as planned.

Boeing said last month that the cumulative impact of a series of issues, including supplier workmanship issues related to the horizontal stabilizer and instrumentation delays, could push first delivery of the 787 a few weeks into 2011. The delay in engine availability has extended that estimate to mid-first quarter 2011.

Meanwhile, due to the new delay, Kenya Airways is threatening to cancel its order for the new airplane.
