2021 version of Boston Red Sox logo jet

JetBlue Airways and American Airlines today announced that customers in New York and Boston will have more reasons to make the Northeast Alliance (NEA) their preferred travel provider as the airlines add new routes, improved schedules and enhanced product offerings. Nine new routes go on sale this week across both airlines in New York and Boston. With these new routes, the NEA offers more frequencies in New York and Boston than any other airline.

Record-Setting Service in New York and Boston

With the addition of new destinations, new markets and added frequencies on variety of existing routes in New York and Boston, JetBlue and American are on track for a record-setting year in the Northeast in summer 2022.

At New York-JFK, the NEA will offer up to 300 daily departures, with JetBlue operating a record 195 flights. Along with the introduction of JetBlueโ€™s new Vancouver service, the airline will also add frequencies on a variety of existing routes between New York-JFK and:

  • Aruba (AUA) | Up to 4x daily.
  • Atlanta (ATL) | Up to 4x daily.
  • Cancun (CUN) | Up to 4x daily.
  • Detroit (DTW) | Up to 2x daily.
  • Guayaquil, Ecuador (GYE) | Up to 2x daily.

As part of the customer-focused NEA, in 2022, American will enhance its global reach with new, nonstop service between New York-JFK and Doha, Qatarโ€™s Hamad International Airport (DOH), becoming the only U.S.-based carrier to serve the Middle Eastern destination.

In the past year, American has provided New York customers with new international travel options, including JFK to Santiago, Chile (SCL); Tel Aviv, Israel (TLV); Athens, Greece (ATH) and Delhi, India (DEL).

At New York-LGA, the NEA will offer nearly 200 daily departures, which includes JetBlue tripling their departures compared to 2019. Along with the introduction of JetBlueโ€™s new Portland, Maine service, the airline will also add frequencies on a variety of existing routes between LGA and:

  • Boston (BOS) | Up to 15x daily.

American has also added new LGA routes to Houston; Kansas City, Mo.; Oklahoma City; and Omaha, Neb. The airline has also added more seats to routes to St. Louis; Raleigh, N.C.; and Nashville, Tenn. Bolstered by the NEA, American has strengthened its offering at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), with better frequencies to its hub airports.

As part of the LaGuardia redevelopment project, American is completing its move of operations to the new Terminal B, Western Concourse starting today. The airline will no longer operate out of the old Central Terminal Building, which has been home to Americanโ€™s operation since the 1960s. Additionally, JetBlue will be fully operating out of LaGuardiaโ€™s Terminal B when completed in summer 2022, providing easy connections for customers traveling on the Northeast Alliance. The LaGuardia Terminal B redevelopment includes a new 1.3 million square foot terminal with 35 gates, an array of New York City-inspired shops and dining options, permanent pieces of art by leading artists and a one-of-a-kind water feature.

Beginning in June, customers in Boston will enjoy greater connectivity with six new U.S. domestic routes and two new options to Canada. With these new routes, the NEA will serve 46 of the top 50 U.S. domestic mainland markets from Boston. Tickets will be available for sale starting Dec. 20.

In Boston, American today announced new nonstop service operated on Embraer E175 aircraft between Boston and:

  • Halifax, Nova Scotia (YHZ) | 1x weekly.
  • Louisville, Ky. (SDF) | Up to daily.
  • Memphis, Tenn. (MEM) | Up to daily.

These new routes follow recently announced American routes from Boston to Columbus, Ohio; Cincinnati, Ohio; Indianapolis; Wilmington, North Carolina; St. Louis; and Toronto.

Along with JetBlueโ€™s introduction of new service to Vancouver and Asheville, the airline will add even more flying between Boston and Washington, D.C. (DCA) with up to 16 daily departures. Additionally, service at Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) will return in summer 2022 with up to five daily flights between Baltimore and Boston starting June 9.

In summer 2022, the NEA will offer more than 200 daily departures in Boston, with JetBlue operating more than 150, to more nonstop destinations than any other carrier.

Codeshare Expands

Todayโ€™s newly announced 2022 schedules come just as JetBlue and American have activated a key component of its codeshare agreement with more connecting markets now available through JFK. The airlines are now codesharing on 185 routes, as American will have its code placed on 70 JetBlue routes while JetBlue will place its code on 115 American routes. This gives the pair a combined schedule with the number of markets and seats that allows JetBlue and American to offer their respective customers options that stack up against larger, dominant carriers. JetBlue and American customers purchasing a codeshare itinerary benefit from having a single ticket that includes flights operated by both carriers, as well as conveniences on their day of travel like one-stop check-in and baggage transfer.

More connecting markets through other New York airports and Boston are set to become available to book soon.

JetBlue reports second quarter net income of $36 million

JetBlue Airways Corporation (JetBlue Airways) (New York) today reported its results for the second quarter 2013:

  • Operating income for the quarter was $102 million, resulting in a 7.6% operating margin, compared to operating income of $130 million and a 10.2% operating margin in the second quarter of 2012.
  • Pre-tax income of $60 million in the second quarter.ย  This compares to pre-tax income of $86 million in the second quarter of 2012.
  • Net income for the second quarter was $36 million, or $0.11 per diluted share.ย  This compares to JetBlue’s second quarter 2012 net income of $52 million, or $0.16 per diluted share.

“Today, we reported our thirteenth consecutive quarter of profitability,” said Dave Barger, JetBlue’s President and Chief Executive Officer. ย “Although second quarter results were negatively impacted by a sluggish economic environment and continued maintenance cost pressures, our crewmembers remained focused on running a safe, reliable airline and delivering excellent service to our customers.ย  We believe we are well positioned to expand margins in the second half of the year as we expect maintenance cost pressures to lessen and unit revenue performance to improve.”

Operational Performance

JetBlue reported record second quarter operating revenues of $1.3 billion.ย  Revenue passenger miles for the second quarter increased 7.3% to 9.12 billion on a capacity increase of 7.8%, resulting in a second quarter load factor of 84.9%, a decrease of 0.4 points year over year.

Yield per passenger mile in the second quarter was 13.40 cents, down 2.8% compared to the second quarter of 2012.ย  Passenger revenue per available seat mile (PRASM) for the second quarter 2013 decreased 3.3% year over year to 11.37 cents and operating revenue per available seat mile (RASM) decreased 3.1% year over year to 12.42 cents.ย  The calendar shift of the Easter and Passover holidays in March this year compared to April last year negatively impacted second quarter year over year PRASM by approximately two points.

“While we are disappointed to report a decline in year over year unit revenue performance during the quarter, we are encouraged by recent revenue trends and the success of our initiatives to attract and retain high-value customers,” said Robin Hayes, JetBlue’s Chief Commercial Officer.

Operating expenses for the quarter increased 7.5%, or $86 million, over the prior year period.ย  JetBlue’s operating expense per available seat mile (CASM) for the second quarter decreased 0.3% year over year to 11.48 cents.ย  Excluding fuel and profit sharing, CASM increased 3.3% to 7.15 cents.

Fuel Expense and Hedging

JetBlue continued to hedge fuel to manage price volatility. ย During the second quarter JetBlue hedged approximately 17% of its fuel consumption and managed approximately 21% of its fuel consumption using fixed forward price agreements (FFPs), resulting in a realized fuel price of $3.06 per gallon, a 4.8% decrease over second quarter 2012 realized fuel price of $3.22.ย  JetBlue recorded $4 million in losses on fuel hedges that settled during the second quarter.ย  In addition, JetBlue recorded $2 million in non-cash fuel hedging ineffectiveness losses during the quarter, which is included in non-operating income/expense.

JetBlue has managed approximately 44% of its third quarter projected fuel requirements using a combination of FFPs, collars, swaps and call options.ย  Based on the fuel curve as of July 26th, JetBlue expects an average price per gallon of fuel, including the impact of hedges, FFPs and fuel taxes, of $3.10 in the third quarter.

Balance Sheet Update

JetBlue ended the second quarter with approximately $867 million in unrestricted cash and short term investments.ย  In addition, JetBlue maintains a $200 million line of credit and a revolving credit facility for up to $350 million.

“We continue to maintain a strong balance sheet with healthy liquidity,” said Mark Powers, JetBlue’s Chief Financial Officer. ย “We expect to continue to use cash from operations to reduce debt, which we believe will help us achieve our return on invested capital goals and generate long-term returns for our shareholders.”

Third Quarter and Full Year Outlook

For the third quarter of 2013, CASM is expected to increase between 1.0% and 3.0% compared to the year-ago period.ย  Excluding fuel and profit sharing, CASM in the third quarter is expected to increase between 3.0% and 5.0% year over year.ย  JetBlue expects roughly half of this year over year increase to be driven by maintenance expense.

CASM for the full year is expected to increase between 0.5% and 2.5% over full year 2012.ย  Excluding fuel and profit sharing, CASM in 2013 is expected to increase between 2.5% and 4.5% year over year.

Capacity is expected to increase between 3.5% and 5.5% in the third quarter and to increase between 5.5% and 7.5% for the full year.

In other news,ย JetBlue Airwaysย and South African Airways (SAA) today announced a bilateral codeshare agreement to connect the carriers’ networks via New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Washington’s Dulles International Airport (IAD). The agreement is pending U.S. DOT regulatory approval and subject to receipt of foreign government operating authority.
