Hawaiian takes delivery of its first Airbus A321neo

Hawaiian Airlines on October 27, 2017 took delivery in Hamburg of its first Airbus A321neo. The pictured A321-271N D-AYAF (msn 7917) became N202HA on the hand over.

This is the first of 18 Airbus A321s on order through 2020.

The A321s will help the carrier replace the eight remaining Boeing 767-300s.

The first A321 daily route will be between Kahului, Maui and Portland, Oregon starting on January 18, 2018.

The second route will be between Kona, Hawaii and Los Angeles starting on March 11, 2018.

The third route will connect Lihue, Kauai with Oakland commencing on April 11, 2018.

Hawaiian Airlines will expand its U.S. West Coast presence with the arrival of an A321neo fleet by adding three new nonstop daily routes early next year: Portland-Maui; Oakland-Kaua‘i; and Los Angeles-Kona.

The new A321neo service between Portland (PDX) and Maui (OGG) will launch on January 18. Hawaiian’s seasonal widebody service currently offered between Oakland (OAK) and Kaua‘i (LIH) through September 4 will resume April 11 as a daily A321neo flight. Daily service between Los Angeles (LAX) and Kona (KOA) on the Island of Hawai‘i launches March 11 with widebody aircraft before the A321neo is introduced in the summer of 2018.

Hawaiian’s inaugural A321neo flight between the U.S. West Coast and Hawai‘i is planned for January 8 on its existing OAK-OGG service. Additional routes will be announced as Hawaiian welcomes 18 new A321neo aircraft between the fourth quarter of 2017 and 2020.

Hawaiian’s signature style flows throughout the A321neo’s three cabins, including 16 luxurious leather recliners in the Premium Cabin, 45 Extra Comfort premium economy seats, and 128 Economy class seats. All seats are equipped with complimentary high-power USB outlets for device charging, while guests in the Premium Cabin and Extra Comfort seats will enjoy access to an additional AC power outlet. Pivoting overhead bins maximize the space for carry-on luggage.

Hawaiian carefully designed its A321neo cabin interiors with textiles and materials that reflect traditional island crafts, from bark cloth (kapa) to fishing nets, and even LED lighting mirroring Hawai‘i’s idyllic sunrises and sunsets.

New to Hawaiian’s guest experience, the A321neo will feature wireless streaming in-flight entertainment. Guests will be able to simply download an application on their personal electronic devices to enjoy a wide selection of complimentary and premium content, including movies, TV shows, music and other exclusive programming. Holders for personal hand-held devices and tablets will be integrated into the tray tables of the Premium Cabin as well as the first row of Extra Comfort, and built into the backrest of all other seats.

The A321neo boasts the quietest and most fuel-efficient engines for this aircraft type, along with aerodynamic wingtips called Sharklets that significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Hawaiian reports 3Q net income of $74.6 million

Hawaiian Holdings, Inc., the parent company of Hawaiian Airlines, Inc., reported its financial results for the third quarter of 2017.

“The third quarter’s excellent results add to the great year we are having,” said Mark Dunkerley, Hawaiian Airlines president and CEO. “Apart from the helpful environment characterized by low fuel prices, manageable industry capacity and strong demand for the Hawaii vacation, our team is doing a terrific job improving the company and widening the gap between us and our competitors.”

Liquidity and Capital Resources

On October 12, 2017, the Company announced the initiation of a quarterly cash dividend of 12 cents per share to be paid on November 30, 2017 to all stockholders of record as of November 17, 2017.

In addition, the Company repurchased approximately 1.1 million shares of common stock for approximately $46.2 million in the third quarter, which leaves $49.5 million remaining under its share repurchase program.

As of September 30, 2017, the Company had:

Outstanding debt and capital lease obligations of $506 million

People

Contributed $134.6 million during the quarter to employee benefit plans, comprised of a one-time payment of $18.5 million to fully fund and terminate the Hawaiian Airlines, Inc. Salaried & IAM Merged Pension Plan, a one-time payment of $101.9 million to settle a portion of the post-65 medical plan obligation in connection with the ratification of a contract amendment with the Air Line Pilots Association, representing its pilots, and a contribution of approximately $14.2 million, $12.7 million above the minimum required, to further reduce pension obligations.

Operational

Ranked #1 nationally for on-time performance for the months of June, July, and August 2017 as reported in the U.S. Department of Transportation Air Travel Consumer Report.

Partnerships

Announced a new partnership with Japan Airlines (JAL) that provides for extensive code sharing, lounge access and frequent flyer program reciprocity, taking effect on March 25, 2018 (subject to government approval). Also announced the intention to establish a joint venture with JAL designed to provide even more choices, convenience and enhancements to the traveling public to/from Japan and beyond to multiple Asian markets.

Increased frequencies

Announced the expansion of non-stop service between Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) and New Zealand’s Auckland Airport (AKL) with up to five non-stop flights weekly beginning March 2018.

Product and loyalty

Continued remodeling the A330 fleet with the addition of lie flat premium seats and increased Extra Comfort capacity. Also announced the introduction of remodeled A330 aircraft to its non-stop service between Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) and Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport (CTS) starting February 2018.

Took delivery of its 24^th A330-200 in September.

Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2017 Outlook

The table below summarizes the Company’s expectations for the fourth quarter and full year ending December 31, 2017, expressed as an expected percentage change compared to the results for the quarter and full year ended December 31, 2016, as applicable.

The Company has revised its guidance range for economic fuel cost per gallon for the full year ending December 31, 2017 due to higher than expected year-to-date fuel costs and the forward fuel price curve as of October 9, 2017. The Company is also providing a guidance range for operating revenue per ASM and has adjusted its guidance ranges for cost per ASM excluding fuel and special Items, ASMs, and gallons of jet fuel consumed for the full year ending December 31, 2017.

Hawaiian to place the new Airbus A321neo in service in January

Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) has announced the first schedules for its upcoming new Airbus A321neo aircraft. The first A321 daily route will be between Kahului, Maui and Portland, Oregon starting on January 18, 2018.

The second route will be between Kona, Hawaii and Los Angeles starting on March 11, 2018.

The third route will connect Lihue, Kauai with Oakland commencing on April 11, 2018.

Hawaiian announces its new Airbus A321neo cabin design

Hawaiian Airlines has revealed its new cabin design for its new Airbus A321neo fleet arriving later this year. According to the carrier, the “Signature features of the interior concept and enhanced service evoke the natural splendor of Hawai’i through color and form, bringing the outdoors in and extending “island time” from the moment a guest steps onboard.”

The medium-haul, single-aisle A321neo aircraft will usher in Hawaiian’s next growth era when they enter the carrier’s Western U.S. network. The A321neos will complement Hawaiian’s fleet of long-haul, twin-aisle aircraft used for flying between Hawai’i and the U.S. Mainland and 11 international destinations, and its narrow-body Boeing 717 fleet flying short, interisland routes.

Hawaiian’s recent Boeing 717 and Airbus A330 aircraft cabin redesigns further differentiate its premium leisure product, creating a contemporary design language of “Earth, Sea and Sky” that is interconnected throughout the fleet. The new interior of the mid-range A321neo completes the evolution of that design philosophy, with each interior carefully tailored to the emotional journeys and ergonomic needs of a variety of travelers.

Guests will enjoy the choice of three cabin products, with intuitive and comfortable seating provided by B/E Aerospace. The Premium Cabin will be luxuriously appointed with leather recliners, thoughtful design details and a custom lighting fixture incorporating Hawaiian’s signature ‘wave’ motif. The 45 Extra Comfort premium economy seats will offer five more inches of legroom, priority boarding and other perks. Seats in all cabins will be equipped with complimentary high-power USB outlets for device charging, while guests in the Premium Cabin and Extra Comfort seats will enjoy access to an additional AC power outlet. Hawaiian Airlines partners with Disney to promote the new animated comedy adventure “Moana”

Hawaiian Airlines, in collaboration with The Walt Disney Studios, has unveiled the first of three custom painted Airbus A330-200 aircraft being adorned with imagery from the highly anticipated, CG-animated comedy adventure “Moana.” The inaugural decal design features four characters from the movie on Hawaiian’s fuselage as they take off on a wayfinding journey, including the demigod Maui, the adventurous teenager Moana, and her two friends: Heihei the rooster and Pua the pig.

Dwayne Johnson, the voice of demigod Maui, and Auli’i Cravalho, the Hawaiʻi-born actress who is the voice of Moana, were among the first to see the inspiring design when the plane was revealed earlier today in a hangar at the airline’s home base at Honolulu International Airport (HNL). The surprise reveal was hosted by Hawaiian Airlines CEO Mark Dunkerley at a special event attended by several hundred members of the airline’s Team Kōkua program — employees and their families who have volunteered their time and service to give back to the local community.

Next month, Hawaiian will reveal two additional livery designs featuring custom-made decals that show the characters interacting with the planes in dynamic and engaging ways. The unique artwork, created by Walt Disney Animation Studios in collaboration with Hawaiian’s team, reimagines each aircraft as a modern-day voyaging canoe, flying Moana, Maui, and their friends to new and exciting destinations.

The overhead luggage bins on all three “Moana”-themed Airbus A330s are also being decorated with characters and artwork from the film. The planes will fly on Hawaiian’s regularly scheduled U.S. domestic routes as well as to international destinations including Brisbane and Sydney, Australia; Osaka and Tokyo, Japan; and Auckland, New Zealand through March of 2017.

Guests traveling to any of Hawaiian’s domestic or international destinations will enjoy special inflight entertainment to include an exclusive welcome video inspired by the film, the “Moana” movie trailer, and Cravalho’s casting video.

Hawaiian also announced the Hawaiian Airlines Wayfinder Caption Contest which begins today and runs through Oct. 23 for fans in the United States, Australia and New Zealand. To enter, contestants will be asked to select one of three “Moana” illustrations and, in 150 words or less, capture the spirit of voyaging and wayfinding. Based on the quality and creativity of the caption, the winning entry will receive a Grand Prize trip for two to attend the Los Angeles premiere of “Moana” on Nov. 14. One runner-up will receive a First Place prize of 80,000 HawaiianMiles and a Second Place winner will receive a Hawaiian Airlines and Disney Moana co-branded gift pack. According to “Moana” producer Osnat Shurer, the story of Moana, Maui and their heroic journey sprang from the imagination of the filmmakers, who were deeply inspired by the glorious people of Oceania.

Though it operates with today’s state-of-the-art technology, Hawaiian honors the courage and ingenuity of skilled Polynesian navigators, who were guided by the waves, wind, stars, moon and sun, by naming each of its A330 aircraft after celestial objects. The branded aircraft is N392HA, christened as “Hikianalia”, the sister star to Hōkūle’a. Both are part of the constellation Iwikuamoʻo, and rise together above the Hawaiian Islands to help guide travelers back to their island home.

Hawaiian invites its guests and Moana fans interested in learning more about today’s celestial navigation to explore the Mālama Honua Worldwide Voyage sponsored by Hawaiian Airlines. Mālama Honua, to care for our Island Earth, is a four-year journey by the Polynesian voyaging canoe Hōkūle’a and the research canoe Hikianalia across the Earth’s oceans. Powered by the wind, guided by the stars, and steered by the knowledge of ancient Polynesian navigators, the voyage will cover a total of 47,000 nautical miles and visit 85 ports in 26 countries.

The U.S. Department of Transportation on May 13, 2016 approved Hawaiian Airlines’ application to serve Honolulu and Kona from Haneda Airport in Tokyo. The DOT has given Hawai’i’s largest and longest serving carrier until January 29, 2017 to start the new service.

The DOT must still decide which five of eight remaining applications by four U.S. air carriers for daytime slots at Haneda it will approve. The slots were opened as part of a February agreement between the U.S. Government and the Government of Japan. Hawaiian has asked that its existing daily Honolulu-Haneda service be among those five.

Hawaiian Airlines reaches tentative agreements with the IAM, will offer new service from Kaua’i next summer

Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) has announced two tentative agreements on five year contracts with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM). The agreements will increase compensation for more than 1,500 employees in District 141 employed in the Clerical, Office, Stores, Fleet and Passenger Services and more than 700 employees in District 142 who work as Aircraft Mechanics and Inspectors, Line Servicemen, Cleaners, and Contract Services personnel.

The agreements are subject to ratification by union members, who are expected to vote on the proposal in the coming weeks.

In other news, Hawaiian Airlines will increase travel options between Kaua’i and California during the summer of 2016. Daily service between Lihu’e and Oakland and Los Angeles will take place during the peak travel months from mid-June through September.

Beginning May 27, 2016, the airline will offer three-times weekly service from Oakland to both Lihu’e and Kona, four-times weekly service from Los Angeles to Kona, and increase its regular nonstop service between Los Angeles and Lihu’e to four-times weekly. From mid-June through Sept. 5, service to Kaua’i from both Oakland and Los Angeles will be offered daily.

The seasonal Oakland and Los Angeles service to the islands of Kaua’i and Hawai’i will add nearly 74,000 air seats to these travel markets over 14 weeks of service. The flights to Kona will be operated by Hawaiian Airlines’ wide-body, twin-aisle Airbus A330 aircraft, seating 294 passengers in a three-class cabin, with 18 in First Class, 40 in Extra Comfort and 236 in the Main Cabin. Flights to Lihu’e will be operated by the airline’s Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, seating 264 passengers in a two-class cabin, with 18 in First Class and 246 in the Main Cabin.

With the addition of both seasonal services, both Lihu’e Airport and Kona International Airport will have a Hawaiian Airlines wide-body aircraft arriving every day of the week next summer.

Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) will launch a new route connecting its Honolulu hub with Tokyo (Narita) starting on July 22, 2016. The daily route will be operated with Airbus A330-200s.

Later in the day, Hawaiian made the announcement public with this statement:

Hawaiian Airlines today announced plans to begin daily nonstop service between Narita International Airport (NRT) and Honolulu International Airport (HNL) starting July 22, 2016. Hawaiian’s new Narita route will complement its existing daily service to Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND), providing two daily flight options to travelers in the Greater Tokyo region.

Starting July 22, 2016, Hawaiian’s Flight HA 821 will depart Honolulu daily at 3:30 p.m., cross the international dateline, and arrive at Narita International Airport at 7 p.m. the following day. Beginning July 23, the return Flight HA 822 will depart from Narita at 9 p.m., cross the international dateline, and arrive at Honolulu International Airport at 9:55 a.m. the same day.

Guests on Hawaiian’s Honolulu-Narita flights will enjoy comfortable legroom aboard the wide-body, twin-aisle Airbus A330-200 aircraft, which seats 294 passengers and features 18 seats in Business Class, 40 seats in Extra Comfort and 236 seats in Economy Class.

Narita will be the airline’s 11th international destination and its fourth destination in Japan. Hawaiian launched service from Honolulu to Haneda in November 2010, Osaka in July 2011 and Sapporo in October 2012.

Hawaiian announces a cabin redesign of its Airbus A330 fleet with lie-flat seating, reports 3Q adjusted net income of $78.4 million

Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) has announced it plans to introduce new luxury design elements and enhanced service options in its Airbus A330 premium cabins, including the addition of 180-degree lie-flat seats. The airline has developed its new seats in partnership with Optimares, an Italian manufacturer focused on traveler-centric design.

The airline continued:

The 180-degree seats will use an innovative seat platform to fold into 76-inch beds, maximizing living space for travelers while providing options for both privacy and a shared flight experience. They will also feature an advanced in-flight entertainment experience powered by the next generation of large-format tablets and equipped with a telescoping tablet arm that adjusts to optimize viewing angle and comfort.

Hawaiian worked with West Coast-based brand and design consultancy PaulWylde to translate the airline’s signature design language, rooted in the natural colors and forms of the island landscape, into the cabin experience. The cabin design will incorporate flowing curves evocative of the winds and ocean, while marrying organic textures, pops of bright saturated color, and luxury materials like leather from Poltrona Frau.

Hawaiian, PaulWylde and Optimares collaborated intensively to ensure the seat and cabins are uniquely tailored to the needs of the Hawaii traveler. The seats will be installed in a 2-2-2 configuration ideally suited for couples and families traveling to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands.

The first newly outfitted aircraft is expected to enter Hawaiian’s long-haul network in the second quarter of 2016. The airline will begin installing lie-flat seats in the remaining 22 A330 aircraft in September of 2016 through 2017.

As part of the cabin redesign, Hawaiian also announced it will add 28 additional Extra Comfort seats on each A330 aircraft in response to growing demand for its popular premium economy service. The Extra Comfort option features 36 inches of seat pitch; priority boarding at the gate; complimentary on-demand in-seat entertainment; and a personal power outlet.

Today, Hawaiian’s wide-body, twin-aisle Airbus 330-200 aircraft seat 294 passengers, with 18 in Business/First Class, 40 in Extra Comfort and 236 in the Main Cabin. In the new configuration, the aircraft will seat 278 passengers, with 18 in Business/First Class, 68 in Extra Comfort and 192 in the Main Cabin. Seat pitch in the Main Cabin will remain a roomy 31 inches.

Hawaiian operates its A330 aircraft on the majority of its North American and international routes. Amenities include personal on-demand entertainment system, comfortable legroom, and a roomy interior.

On the financial side, Hawaiian reported its financial results for the third quarter of 2015:

GAAP net income of $70.0 million or $1.15 per diluted share.
Adjusted net income of $78.4 million or $1.29 per diluted share, an increase of $28.9 million or $0.50 cents per diluted share year-over-year.
Adjusted pre-tax margin of 20.0% compared to 12.6% in the prior year period.
Unrestricted cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments of $611 million.
Achieved leverage target at 3.1x.

Hawaiian Airlines (Honolulu) has announced the renewed partnership with the NFL Oakland Raiders. The airline has added the Raiders shield logo to an Airbus A330-200. The airline issued this statement:

Hawaiian Airlines is proud to announce it will serve as the Official Airline of The Oakland Raiders for the 2015 National Football League (NFL) season. Hawai‘i’s largest and longest serving carrier has provided its signature ‘Mea Ho‘okipa’ (translation: I am host) in-flight hospitality and charter service for the team’s away games since 2000.

Starting with the Raiders’ September 3 preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks, Hawaiian’s designated Airbus A330 aircraft featuring the Raiders’ shield will carry players, coaches, trainers, as well as uniforms and equipment, to eight games, including: Seattle, Cleveland, Chicago, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Tennessee and Denver through December.

Hawaiian provides a dedicated catering coordinator to meet the team’s expectations and to handle special requests. Hearty, nutritious meals are provided along with sandwiches and an assortment of healthy snacks that include fresh fruit, protein bars and, at the Raiders’ request, products from Hawai‘i, such as Passion Orange Guava Juice and Hawaiian Iced Tea. For entertainment, Hawaiian offers a wide selection of movies, TV shows and music.

Hawaiian Airlines has served the Oakland market since 2008, and provides daily nonstop flights to both Honolulu and Kahului, Maui. During the peak summer months, travelers can fly nonstop to all four major Hawaiian islands, when the airline adds seasonal service from Oakland to Līhu’e, Kaua’i and Kona, Hawai’i Island, between May and September.
