JetBlue and Aer Lingus expand their codeshare partnership across the North Atlantic

JetBlue Airways today announced it is expanding its codeshare partnership with Aer Lingus โ€“the Irish flag carrier โ€“ to offer customers more ways to book and connect their travel between the two airlinesโ€™ networks.

As part of the new bilateral codeshare, JetBlue is now placing its โ€œB6โ€ code on four Aer Lingus routes between JetBlueโ€™s Northeast focus cities andย Ireland:

  • New Yorkโ€™s John F.ย Kennedyย International Airport (JFK) to:
    • Dublin Airport (DUB)
    • Shannon Airport (SNN)
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to:
    • Dublin Airport
    • Shannon Airport

JetBlue intends to add its code to select Aer Lingus routes beyondย Irelandย in the near future.

JetBlue and Aer Lingus customers purchasing a codeshare itinerary benefit from having a single ticket that includes flights operated by both carriers, as well as conveniences on their day of travel like one-stop check-in and baggage transfer. Additionally, customers traveling to theย U.S.ย fromย Irelandย benefit from the convenience of pre-clearing customs prior to departingย Dublinย and Shannon, allowing them to be on their way faster after landing inย New Yorkย orย Boston.

JetBlue and Aer Lingus have partnered since 2008 and in 2013 announced a unilateral codeshare agreement. Today the Aer Lingus โ€œEIโ€ code is available on more than three dozen JetBlue routes and offer customers convenient connections through JetBlueโ€™sย New Yorkย andย Bostonย focus cities.

Aer Lingus will operate 16 transatlantic routes fromย Dublin, Shannon andย Manchester, UKย toย North Americaย and theย Caribbeanย in 2022. Aer Lingus is a 4-Star airline, awarded by Skytrax, the international air transport rating organization. Aer Lingus is a member of International Airlines Group (IAG), one of the world’s largest airline groups.

President and Chief Operating Officer, JetBlue Airways is thankful

JetBlue Airways issued this statement:

As Thanksgiving approaches, gratefulness is always top-of-mind.

And looking back at the past nearly two years, and ahead toward the holiday season and beyond, I’m so thankful, both to our 21,000 JetBlue crewmembers, for coming together and leaning on each other as we navigated these unprecedented times, and to our customers, for trusting us to keep you safe.

With many holiday get-togethers planned and more international destinations open for travel, I am grateful for this opportunity for JetBlue to bring air travel back to humanity. Ramping back up has also not been without its growing painsโ€”and we appreciate your continued patience and support as we take this journey together.

As we look to serve a record number of travelers this holiday season, we’re proud of the steps we’ve taken to meet the holiday rush, and deliver the JetBlue experience that you know and love, including:

  • Increasing hiring across key teams, including Customer Support and Airports, and rallying broad crewmember compliance with all vaccine mandates and protocols.
  • Expanding our flight schedule to pre-pandemic levels, while also providing customers with additional options and flexibility in the Northeast through our alliance with American Airlines.
  • Continuing to trim down wait times at airports by streamlining lobby lines, introducing more signage and crewmembers to help customers find their way, and making our bag drop process as efficient as possible.
  • Reducing average Customer Support hold times to under an hour. (And for the fastest way to reach a live crewmember, you can chat with us atย jetblue.com/chat).
  • Deploying in-person Customer Support crewmembers at select airports.
  • Bringing back our full onboard selection of brand-name snacks and soft drinks.

As always, safety remains our #1 priority, and we encourage our customers to do their part to ensure a safeโ€”and seamlessโ€”holiday travel experience for all, including:

  • Keeping up to date on the COVID-19 testing and documentation requirements of your destination, as well as the safety protocols at the airport and on board, including masks for all travelers 2 years of age and older. These can change daily so be sure to check ourย COVID-19 info hub.
  • Double-checking the fare you purchased and whether it includes a checked bag and/or a carry-on. Learn moreย here.
  • Arriving early and allowing extra time for check-in, security and any destination-specific COVID-19 protocols. For international flights, we recommend arriving three hours in advance.
  • Considering public transit options for travel to and from the airport to avoid holiday traffic.

For 21 years, we have made it our mission to bring people together, during the holiday season and all year round. What we have all been missing these last almost two years we are now only too happy to provide, and provide safely, sensibly and securely. For this Thursday and beyond, happy holidays, and welcome aboard.

Happy holidays!

The Northeast Alliance to add more international flights in 2022

American Airlines issued this statement:

The NEA has increased competition, created the most frequencies in New York and is transforming business travel in high-frequency markets

  • The NEA has created the largest flight schedule in New York and Boston than any other airline, offering consumers more flight choices in 60 markets from New York and 49 markets from Boston.
  • In December, American and JetBlue will offer lie-flat seats on all transcontinental routes from New York and Boston, offering the most lie-flat seats of any airlines for a premium travel experience from the Northeast.
  • In 2022, the NEA has 18 new international routes launched or planned to meet increased travel demand.
  • American is introducing Main Select, which will provide business customers more flexibility, convenience and comfort starting on flights in the Northeast, and then throughout its network.

In 2022, customers will experience the full benefits of the Northeast Alliance (NEA) between American Airlines and JetBlue, including the most flight choices in dozens of markets from New York and Boston, lie-flat seats on all transcontinental routes and a robust international network. In addition, American will reimagine business travel in 2022 with the launch of Main Select for business travelers.

The innovative alliance between American and JetBlue continues to increase competition in the Northeast.

Easiest way to travel the East Coast

The NEA has created more frequencies in New York than any other airline, offering consumers access to nearly 60 markets, and more than 48 markets from Boston. And with a retimed 2022 schedule in high-frequency markets such as from Boston (BOS) to Washington, D.C. (DCA) and New York (LGA) to DCA, the NEA will offer customers the most convenient service on key business routes.

Recently, JetBlue added its code to several international flights on Americanโ€™s network and continues to add its code to further domestic and international flights.

Customers can now easily connect from an American flight to a JetBlue flight and vice versa through New York (JFK) as the two airlines are now offering codeshare connections to nearly 600 origin and destination markets.

Since January, the NEA has brought more service to customers in New York and Boston, including 58 new routes, increased frequencies on more than 130 routes and codeshare on 175 routes. The NEA has also created reciprocal codeshare on the largest connecting markets from JFK.

The return of international travel

While other airlines try to make old routes new again, American has continued to operate its international schedule during the pandemic. Bolstered by the NEA, American is currently the fastest growing international carrier in New York. The alliance connects the Northeast to almost 150 worldwide destinations, including 10 new international routes from American.

These routes include new service from New Yorkโ€™s JFK to Tel Aviv, Israel (TLV), which launched in May; JFK service to Athens, Greece (ATH), which launched in June; and JFK service to Delhi, India (DEL), which launches on Nov. 12.

In its January 2022 schedule, American will also upgauge aircraft on its New York routes to Medellin and Cali, Colombia, offering more seats to the popular South American destination.

Blue Extra, meet Main Select

American is reimagining travel for business customers. In 2022, American will launch Main Select in key business markets, continuing American’s decades of premium business service by operating high-frequency routes between LGA to DCA, LGA to Chicago (ORD), BOS to DCA and in additional markets such as Dallas and Los Angeles. Main Select takes the stress out of business travel with refundable fares, priority boarding, priority check-in, choice of all seats in Main Cabin at time of booking including Main Cabin Extra, and free same-day flight changes.

With this new innovative fare product for business customers across the country, American will be retiring the airlineโ€™s Shuttle product, which was only available on select routes in the Northeast.

Business customers can purchase a Blue Extra fare when flying on JetBlue high-frequency routes, including LGA to BOS, operated exclusively by JetBlue. Blue Extra conveniently offers same-day flight switches, Even Moreยฎ Speed at select airports and early boarding, making business travel a breeze.

Status perks on both airlines

Earlier this fall, Americanโ€™s AAdvantage status members and JetBlueโ€™s TrueBlue Mosaic members began receiving their benefits when traveling either carrier, including priority boarding, priority security and free checked baggage allowances.

For those TrueBlue Mosaic members who want to choose an aisle or a window seat, these preferred seats are now available for selection at the time of purchase.

JetBlue announces a new tentative agreement on negotiations with TWU

"Fly Like You Mint It"

JetBlue Airways has announced it has reached a new tentative agreement with the Transport Workers Union (TWU) for JetBlueโ€™s inflight crewmembers.

โ€œWeโ€™re pleased to share that the JetBlue and TWU negotiating committees have reached a new tentative agreement,โ€ said Ed Baklor, head of customer care and programs, JetBlue. โ€œOur inflight crewmembers have been on the frontline supporting and protecting JetBlueโ€™s operation and our customers through the COVID-19 pandemic, and I am proud of the TWU and JetBlue teams for recognizing our environment and coming to the table with solutions. We look forward to bringing this contract to a vote with our inflight crewmembers.โ€

JetBlue’s current codes on Icelandair offer customers direct flights between New Yorkโ€™s John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport, Bostonโ€™s Logan International Airport (BOS), Newarkโ€™s Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Icelandโ€™s Keflavik International Airport (KEF) in the capital city ofย Reykjavik. As part of the codeshare expansion, the JetBlue โ€œB6โ€ code will initially be placed on seven of 24 European routes that Icelandair operates beyondย Reykjavik. The plan is to add more in the near future. The initial routes are:

  • Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS),ย Netherlands
  • Copenhagen Airport (CPH),ย Denmark
  • Glasgow Airport (GLA),ย United Kingdom
  • Helsinki Airport (HEL),ย Finland
  • Manchester Airport (MAN),ย United Kingdom
  • Oslo Airport (OSL),ย Norway
  • Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN),ย Sweden

This expanded codeshare agreement builds upon JetBlue and Icelandairโ€™s partnership that first began in 2011. Icelandair passengers already benefit from access to a network that spans to 45 destinations in more than 15 countries around the world. This further strengthening of the partnership will allow JetBlue customers to enjoy additional travel options via Icelandโ€™s Keflavik International Airport, Icelandairโ€™s connecting hub.

JetBlue arrives in San Antonio

JetBlue Airways today announced it has officially launched service at San Antonio International Airport (SAT) from both New Yorkโ€™s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), with the first flights landing in the Texas city this afternoon.

San Antonio service will operate with a mix of both the Airbus A320 and A220 aircraft.

JetBlue expands at LaGuardia in two terminals with significant growth made possible by its Northeast Alliance

JetBlue Airways today announced effective this Sunday, October 31 it will expand its footprint at New Yorkโ€™s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) across two terminals, operate more daily departures than ever before with up to 35 daily flights and serve more than triple the number of nonstop destinations flown in 2019. JetBlueโ€™s growth โ€“ aimed at delivering more competition and low fares to travelers โ€“ is made possible through its Northeast Alliance (NEA) with American Airlines.

Simple, Split Terminal Operations

Starting this Sunday, JetBlue will expand operations to two separate terminals at LaGuardia to make way for more flying and new destinations. The airline will continue to operate in the historic Marine Air Terminal (Terminal A) but will also be expanding into LaGuardiaโ€™s state-of-the-art Terminal B.

Allย Bostonย flights will operate at the Marine Air Terminal, while flights to and from all other destinations will operate at Terminal B. JetBlue will operate up to 12 daily departures toย Bostonย at the Marine Air Terminal and up to 23 additional daily departures to other destinations from Terminal B. Terminal B is also home to American Airlines and will allow for convenient connections between the airlines within the same terminal.

JetBlueโ€™s split operation at LaGuardia will continue until the airline fully relocates to Terminal B in the future.

The LaGuardia Terminal B redevelopment โ€“ now more than 85% complete โ€“ includes a new 1.3 million square foot terminal with 35 gates, an array ofย New York City-inspired shops and dining options, permanent pieces of art by leading artists and a one-of-a-kind water feature.

More Departures to More Destinations

In addition to expanding its footprint at LaGuardia, JetBlue will also expand its list of nonstop destinations and number of daily flights. Starting Sunday, October 31, the airline will introduce three all-new routes with daily service between LaGuardia and:

  • Jacksonville, Fla.ย (JAX), up to twice daily.
  • Sarasota, Fla.ย (SRQ), once daily.
  • Savannah, Ga.ย (SAV), once daily.

With the addition of new destinations and increased flying on select routes, JetBlue will now operate up to 35 daily departures at LaGuardia, more than ever before. Still, JetBlue intends to grow further in the months ahead. In 2022, the airline will operate more than 50 daily departures and add service to even more new destinations, again enabled by the NEA. In the first half of the year, JetBlue will introduce nonstop service between LaGuardia and:

  • New Orleans, La.ย (MSY), on sale and launching March 27.
  • Nashville, Tenn.ย (BNA), on sale and launching March 27.
  • Portland, Maineย (PWM), on sale soon and launching summer 2022.

By summer 2022, JetBlue will serve 16 nonstop destinations from LaGuardia, more than even before.

Northeast Alliance Supercharges Competition

JetBlueโ€™s expansion at LaGuardia is a direct result of the NEA with American, which creates a viable third competitor in the Northeast by, among other things, connecting JetBlueโ€™s growing network to Americanโ€™s through codeshare and reciprocal loyalty benefits. The NEA is already delivering countless benefits to customers and enabling the expansion of JetBlueโ€™s low fares and great service.

JetBlue has announced nine all-new destinations and 32 new routes, enabled by the NEA. Together JetBlue and American have added 58 new routes, including 18 international flights that will launch by 2022 and increased frequencies on more than 130 routes giving more options and choices to customers. The airlines are now codesharing on 175 routes, giving the pair a combined schedule with the number of markets and seats that for the first time in JetBlueโ€™s two-decade history allows it to offer its customers options that stack up against larger, dominant carriers.

Inย New York, JetBlue and American plan to operate close to 500 daily flights next month, 300 of which will be flown by JetBlue. Given a vastly expanded network and flying, the NEA is estimated to generate more thanย $800 million dollarsย in annual consumer benefits. JetBlue is also in the process of hiring 1,800 new Crewmembers as a direct result of the growth that the NEA is enabling โ€“ jobs that otherwise would not be created without this alliance.

JetBlue will continue to implement the NEA and deliver tremendous benefits of added competition to its customers.

JetBlue reports GAAP diluted earnings per share of $0.40 in the third quarter of 2021

JetBlue Airways Corporation today reported its results for the third quarter of 2021:

  • Reported GAAP diluted earnings per share ofย $0.40ย in the third quarter of 2021 compared to diluted earnings per share ofย $0.63ย in the third quarter of 2019. Adjusted loss per share was ($0.12)(1)ย in the third quarter of 2021 versus adjusted diluted earnings per share ofย $0.59(1)ย in the third quarter of 2019.
  • GAAP pre-tax earnings ofย $190 millionย in the third quarter of 2021, compared to a pre-tax income ofย $254 millionย in the third quarter of 2019. Excluding one-time items, adjusted pre-tax loss ofย ($50) million(1)ย in the third quarter of 2021 versus adjusted pre-tax income ofย $239 million(1)ย in the third quarter of 2019.

Operational and Financial Highlights from the Third Quarter

  • Capacity declined by 0.8% year over two, in-line with our planning assumption of a 1% decline, year over two.
  • Revenue declined 5.5% year over two, which is better than our planning assumption of a 6% to 9% decline year over two. This was mainly the result of continued outperformance of our Fare Options initiative, as well as an uptick in demand as we closed out the quarter.
  • Operating expenses per available seat mile decreased 2.1% year over two. Operating expenses per available seat mile, excluding fuel and special items (CASM ex-fuel)ย (1)ย increased 12.7%(1)ย year over two, which is in-line with our planning assumption of an 11% to 13% increase year over two.
  • Adjusted Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, Amortization and Special Items (Adjusted EBITDA) in the third quarter of 2021 wasย $140 million(1), better than our planning assumption range ofย $75ย toย $125 million.

Balance Sheet and Liquidity

  • As of September 30, 2021, JetBlueโ€™s adjusted debt to capital was 53%(1).
  • JetBlue ended the third quarter of 2021 with approximatelyย $3.3 billionย in unrestricted cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments, or 41% of 2019 revenue. This excludes ourย $550 millionย undrawn revolving credit facility.
  • JetBlue repaidย $74 millionย in regularly scheduled debt and finance lease obligations, and prepaid theย $115Mย CARES Act loan andย $105Mย of bank loans.

Fuel Expense and Hedging

  • The realized fuel price in the third quarter 2021 wasย $2.08ย per gallon, a 1.2% increase versus third quarter 2019 realized fuel price ofย $2.06.
  • As of October 26, 2021, JetBlue has not entered into forward fuel derivative contracts to hedge its fuel consumption for the third quarter of 2021. Based on the forward curve as of October 15, 2021, JetBlue expects an average all-in price per gallon of fuel ofย $2.49ย in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Accelerating ESG Efforts and Doubling Down On Commitments

  • At JetBlue, we firmly believe that robust ESG oversight generates value for shareholders. Weโ€™ve been transparently reporting on key ESG topics since 2007, with annual ESG reports aligned to SASB and TCFD reporting frameworks since 2017.
  • JetBlue continues to lead the industry in ESG governance, as the firstย U.S.ย airline to tie executive compensation to ESG metrics, execute a sustainability-linked loan, and operate an ESG Subcommittee of our Board of Directors.
  • Enabled by our recent deals with SG Preston, Neste, World Energy, and World Fuel Services, we are well ahead of pace to achieve our target of 10 percent SAF usage by 2030.
  • Launched two new programs, Gateway College and Jet Ops to Support Pathway Program, aimed at investing in our crewmembers and provide better access to careers as pilots, in technical ops and support centers.
  • We updated our uniform policy to be more inclusive, including changes to gendered uniforms, size options and hair-style policy.
  • Following a devastating earthquake inย Haiti, we transported over 14,000 pounds of supplies and over 150 volunteers from around our operation to support relief efforts.
  • We distributed over 10,000 books to our communities through our JetBlue For Good program Soar with Reading.
  • We logged over 6,400 hours of volunteering service during the third quarter.

The Northeast Alliance Supercharges Competition and Delivers Broader Benefits

  • The Northeast Alliance has supercharged competition in the Northeast by providing more choices and better service for customers.
  • Together with American, JetBlue launched 58 new routes out of the Northeast, added frequencies on more than 130 routes, and plans to expand to 18 new international destinations.
  • The Northeast Alliance is estimated to generate more thanย $800 millionย in consumer benefits annually. JetBlue plans to hire 1,800 new crewmembers for the NEA โ€“ jobs that otherwise would not be created without this alliance.

Our Recovery Plan and Actions Taken to Position JetBlue for Future Success

โ€œAs we work through our annual planning process, our teams are setting solid goals for our network, commercial and cost initiatives, and capital allocation priorities. I could not be more proud of our teamโ€™s efforts, and Iโ€™m confident that we are setting JetBlue on a trajectory to restore our earnings power to beyond 2019 levels over the coming years, generating long-term value for all of our stakeholders,โ€ said Robin Hayes, JetBlueโ€™s Chief Executive Officer.

โ€œWe believe that demand is once again poised to re-accelerate into the peak holiday periods and beyond as people continue to adjust to a new normal. We are marching towards a full recovery and a return to sustained profitability, with margin as our โ€˜north starโ€™. I am a firm believer that our unique business model โ€“ low costs, low fares, and a superior product โ€“ positions JetBlue to thrive in the years ahead.โ€

Revenue and Capacity

โ€œI am very pleased with our exceptionally strong revenue performance in the third quarter. September took the brunt of the bookings softness associated with rising case counts tied to the Delta variant. That said, trends have stabilized and are improving. We expect robust revenue acceleration throughout the quarter as the holidays approach and demand continues to meaningfully improve,โ€ said Joanna Geraghty, JetBlueโ€™s President and Chief Operating Officer.

โ€œFor the fourth quarter, we are planning for revenue to decline between (8%) and (13%) year over two. We expect troughs to be challenging, exacerbated by a slower business travel recovery, but the holidays are performing meaningfully better, and we took tactical capacity actions to better align with the demand environment.

For the fourth quarter of 2021, our planning assumption is for capacity to decline between (4%) and (7%) year over two, given the seasonal pull-back in leisure demand and a corporate travel recovery that has been pushed back. As we move through the recovery, weโ€™ll continue to be nimble in deploying capacity to areas of demand strength. Our network is one of our greatest assets, and weโ€™ll continue to build relevance across our Focus Cities to serve our Customers and achieve long-term success.โ€

Financial Performance and Outlook

โ€œOur third quarter revenue and Adjusted EBITDA(1)ย came in above the high-end of the ranges we expected in early-September. This was largely driven by stronger than expected performance of Fare Options and a mid-September pick-up in bookings, which drove a revenue result in the third quarter that we believe to be among the best in the industry,โ€ said Ursula Hurley, JetBlueโ€™s Chief Financial Officer.

โ€œFor the fourth quarter, we estimate our EBITDA(2)ย will range between negativeย ($50) millionย to positiveย $50 million dollars. This sequential decrease is due to the seasonal leisure demand pattern, pressure from the recent material spike in fuel prices, as well as ramp-up related labor costs.

Our teams continue to work diligently to improve our cost structure and mitigate the near-term pressures we are facing as we restore the business and invest for our long-term earnings power. We continue to expect CASM ex-Fuel to improve from a double-digit growth rate in the second half of 2021 to low-single-digit growth in 2022, versus 2019 levels.

We continue to make good progress in returning our balance sheet to investment grade credit metrics. Looking ahead, we plan to maintain a balanced approach to capital allocation to help achieve our financial targets, enabled by our relatively strong balance sheet which we believe ranks among the best in the industry.โ€

Focusing on ease and convenience, JetBlue Travel Productsโ€™ new offerings are designed to create a smoother traveler experience from booking to travel and even upon return. Thereโ€™s also always the risk that their flight will be delayed or cancelled, causing them to miss their cruise departure, without recourse. To solve some of these customer pain points and to get them into vacation mode faster, JTP has partnered with travel technology specialistsย Traveltekย to give customers the ability to search and book cruise packages easily.

Alternatively, the airline will cover up to 150% of the customerโ€™s original package price for a new JetBlue Vacations package, should their JetBlue flight be delayed or cancelled. The airlineโ€™s Plane to Port Commitment is only applicable if a cruise is missed due to a JetBlue flight delay or cancellation. JetBlue is dedicated to offering its customers the best travel assistance possible, should unanticipated travel schedule changes or delays cause them to miss their cruise departure:

  • Same Cruise, New Port
If a customer misses their cruise departure due to a JetBlue travel delays, the airline will fly them to their next port on the cruise itinerary so they can still enjoy the rest of their vacation.
  • Same Cruise, New Dates

  • Same Dates, New Vacation
If a customer misses their cruise departure due to a JetBlue travel delays or cancellation and the airline is unable to get the customer to their next port (or, if they prefer not flying to the next port), JetBlue will cover up to an additional 50% of the customerโ€™s original package price for a new JetBlue Vacations package.

If a customer finds a better price online for a flight + hotel or flight + cruise vacation package that is identical to a Package offered by JetBlue Vacations before or within 48 hours of the customerโ€™s purchase of that Package from JetBlue Vacations, JetBlue guarantees that they will match that price or refund the customer the difference in price. By booking a flight and cruise package through JetBlue Vacations, customers have access to JetBlueโ€™s award-winning onboard experience including mainstays such as a complimentary inflight alcoholic beverage (21+), complimentary snacks, earlier boarding, and free Fly-Fi. Customers will also have the ability to earn TrueBlue points (including Mosaic qualifying points), as well as cruise loyalty points. For more information, visit jetbluevacations.com or call 1-844- JB-VACAY to reach a team of 24/7 vacation planning experts, who can help book every detail of your next cruise trip.

Cruise packages will be available for sailing dates starting November 1, 2021, and will extend with JetBlueโ€™s flight schedule, offering customers the option to purchase flight + cruise packages as the schedule extends.
