Aer Lingus has its highest second quarter operating results since 2010, wants to expand to North America, especially Dallas/Fort Worth

Aer Lingus (Dublin) posted a first half net loss of โ‚ฌ12.3 million ($16.5 million), narrowed from a โ‚ฌ23.5 million ($31.5 million) net loss in the same period a year ago. This includes the highest second quarter operating result since 2010 despite a โ‚ฌ10 million negative effect of industrial action.

The airline has been very happy with the ย results of new service to San Francisco and Toronto and wants to further expand with new routes to North America. Dallas/Fort Worth is high on their list for new routes according to this article by the Irish Independent.

Air Canada to fly to Panama City, Panama

Air Canada (Montreal) today announced that it will start new, nonstop flights between Toronto (Pearson) and Panama City beginning on December 17, 2014. With the launch of the three-times weekly, year-round service, Air Canada will be the only Canadian network carrier operating between Canada and Panama.

The new service will be provided with an Airbus A319 aircraft with 120 seats.

Air Canada to convert the Toronto-St. Maarten route to Rouge, St. John’s-London route to convert to year-round

Air Canada (Montreal) will convert the Toronto (Pearson)-St. Maarten route to an Air Canada rouge route on December 20. The twice-weekly route will be operated with Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft per Airline Route.

In other news, Air Canada has announced its nonstop St. John’s-London (Heathrow) route will now operate year-round beginning on October 26, 2014.

Flights will operate three times a week on Monday-Thursday-Saturday leaving St. John’s at 00:40, arriving in London at 09:15, departing from London at 11:05 and arriving back in St. John’s at 13:05.

WestJet Encore to replace WestJet on the Toronto-Quebec City route

WestJet (Calgary) has ย announced the launch of new, nonstop twice-daily service between Toronto (Pearson) and Quebec City, Quebec, effective on March 15, 2015. Using WestJet Encore‘s fleet of Canadian-made Bombardier DHC-8-402 (Q400) NextGen aircraft, the new service will replace WestJet’s current daily service on board its Boeing Next-Generations 737s.

On the financial side, WestJetย announced its first quarter results for 2014, with net earnings of $89.3 million (all amounts in Canadian dollars), or $0.69 per diluted share. This compares with the net earnings of $91.1 million, or $0.68 per diluted share reported in the first quarter of 2013. Based on the trailing twelve months, the airline achieved a return on invested capital of 13.7 per cent, compared with the 13.9 per cent reported in the previous quarter. These results include pre-tax recoveries of value added taxes of $17.6 million associated with fuel costs and $2.5 million associated with airport costs incurred from 2009 to 2013.
