PEOPLExpress suspends operations, plans to return around October 16

PEOPLExpress (2nd)(Vision) 737-400 N745VA (Grd)(PE)(LRW)

PEOPLExpress Airlines (2nd) (Newport News/Williamsburg) today (September 26) announced that it is temporarily suspending service effective immediately and plans to re-launch on or about October 16.

The airline stated; “Recent aircraft and crew availability and maintenance issues, including an aircraft recently damaged by a vendor’s truck, an engine change and a lack of a planned spare aircraft, have made it challenging to operate a full schedule, preventing us from delivering the passenger experience we are striving for.”

The airline is currently processing refunds for passengers for flights booked through October 15, which will take five to seven business days. For reservations beyond October 15, passengers will receive a notification by e-mail as soon as our service resumption plans are in place.

According to the airline, PEOPLExpress successfully served 55,000 passengers on 817 flights since launching service on June 30, demonstrating the need for additional nonstop air service to underserved markets as a result of airline industry consolidation.

PEOPLExpress still intends to launch previously announced service to Orlando and Charleston, West Virginia starting on October 16.

Meanwhile JetBlue Airways has offered to help any stranded passengers. For those PEOPLExpress customers previously scheduled to fly within existing JetBlue markets (Boston – New Orleans, Tampa or West Palm Beach; Newark – Tampa or West Palm Beach) between September 26 and October 5, call JetBlue at 1-800-JETBLUE to explore alternate travel options.

“After months of preparation, we are excited to start selling tickets to create a fun, creative and innovative approach to air travel and dispel the myth that low air fares have to mean low service or an impersonal experience,” said Jeff Erickson of PEOPLExpress. “We are encouraged by the very positive reception we’ve received about our new service. It’s time to Fly Smart.™”

PEOPLExpress takes off June 30 with two daily round-trip flights between Newport News/Williamsburg (PHF) and Newark, and one daily round-trip flight to both Boston and Pittsburgh.

On July 15, West Palm Beach is added with one daily round-trip.

On August 1, PEOPLExpress will add one daily roundtrip to Atlanta (except Tuesdays), followed on August 28 by three weekly roundtrips to St. Petersburg/Clearwater and three weekly flights to New Orleans. PEOPLExpress will operate from two gates on Concourse A at Newport News.

Introductory fares start as low as $76 each way.

Vision Airlines launches Sanford-Gulfport/Biloxi flights

Vision Airlines (Atlanta) started a new route linking Sanford (near Orlando) and Gulfport/Biloxi on February 6 per Anna Aero. Gulfport/Biloxi appears to be location of its current winter operations. The airline operates Boeing 737s on the two routes (see map below). The carrier has continuously shifted its route map in search of a winning winter/summer combination.

In June 2012 the airline cancelled its agreement with Globespan Aviation due to “Globespan’s failure to meet its financial obligations under the contract.” Globespan had tried to start a program to South Korea using Vision Airlines Boeing 767-200 ER but according to the airline, “it appears they do not have the financial support for the program.”
