Silver Airways is building a new maintenance facility at Orlando International Airport

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood and Gainesville), this week previewed its new international maintenance headquarters at Orlando International Airport.

Scheduled to officially open in March, the project was made possible by a $3.5 million public transportation joint participation agreement from the Florida Department of Transportation to the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, as well as a significant contribution from Silver Airways.

Silver Airways’ new facility will employ 200 people in the local Orlando-area community. The airline also employs an additional nearly 700 people throughout the State of Florida.

The project is a complete renovation that will be home to a 38,000 square-foot maintenance, repair and overhaul facility that includes two large aircraft hangars each capable of housing three to four aircraft, as well as office space. Silver Airways has committed to a long-term 30-year lease from the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority to headquarter its new maintenance facility in Orlando.

In other news, Silver Airways is resuming service in the following markets:

Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood to Governor’s Harbour with three weekly flights (Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays).
Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood to Great Exuma Island with five weekly flights (every day except Mondays and Thursdays).
Orlando to Marsh Harbour with daily service.
Jacksonville to Marsh Harbour with two weekly flights on Saturdays and Sundays.

How First Air keeps track of its aircraft in the remote far north of Canada

First Air (Ottawa and Yellowknife) flies to some of the most remote parts of the world in the northern Arctic regions of Canada (see route map). First Air uses an unique tracking system designed by FLYHT Aerospace Solutions. According to the company, the system automatically transmits four-dimensional GPS-based based position and flight data recorder information according to this article by the Daily Mail.

Air Austral to introduce a new corporate look

Air Austral (Sainte-Marie, Reunion, France) will soon introduced a new livery and brand. The airline has already issued this new logo (above) and this announcement (below) about the first aircraft to be painted (translated from French):

Mokulele to begin Kona-Kapalua (Maui) service on July 19

Mokulele Airlines (Mokulele Express) (Kona) has announced that effective July 19, 2013, it will begin offering service between Kona International Airport on the Big Island and Kapalua Airport on Maui.

Mokulele will operate four daily flights between Kona to Kapalua. When the new service launches on July 19, Mokulele will become the first airline to operate regular service between the two cities.

AirAsia Japan to be shut down on October 31

AirAsia Japan (Tokyo-Narita) will cease all scheduled services on October 31, 2013. ANA has decided it will not merge the joint venture with Peach Aviation. The airline started operations on August 1, 2012.

All four Airbus A320s will be returned to AirAsia (Malaysia) the following day.

Silver Airways to drop the Montana EAS contract

Silver Airways (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood) has filed a 90-day notice with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) that it intends to drop its Montana routes under the Essential Air Service (EAS) program according to the Independent Record.

The airline will be required to operate the routes until a replacement carrier is located. The DOT has set a deadline of July 15 for the bids from other carriers. Silver Airways intends to move its Beech (Raytheon) 1900Ds from the Montana operation based at Billings, MT to the Cleveland operation.

Previously Great Lakes Airlines was outbid by Silver Airways (formerly Gulfstream International Airlines) for the EAS contract and may re-bid the contract.

Arik Air orders three Bombardier CRJ1000s and four DHC-8-402s

Arik Air (Arik Wings of Nigeria) (Lagos) has signed a firm contract with Bombardier to acquire three CRJ1000 NextGen aircraft and four DHC-8-402 (Q400) NextGen turboprop airliners.

Arik Air currently operates four CRJ900 aircraft and two DHC-8-402 (Q400) NextGen aircraft.

Air Zimbabwe slashes its fares, cuts its workforce, adds an Airbus A320 and searches for a new CEO

Air Zimbabwe (Harare) according to this report by the Mail and Guardian is trying everything to win back customers. The airline is cutting fare, slashing its workforce, looking for a new chief executive and planning to add four new aircraft. A new Airbus A320 has been added to the fleet for the Johannesburg route.

As previously reported, Air Zimbabwe started flying again in November 2012 on the the Harare-Johannesburg route four days a week and also operates domestic flights between Harare and Bulawayo three days a week.

Sky Airline of Chile to expand to Brazil in 2014

Sky Airline (Santiago) on June 7 received new authorization from the Brazilian aviation authorities for new route authority rights to operate between Chile and Brazil. The airline will start Brazilian flights in 2014.

Meanwhile the airline continues to convert its Boeing 737-200 fleet to more modern Airbus A319s and A320s. The company during May scrapped two more Boeing 737-200s (CC-CTI and CC-CTX).

ALC to lease two new ATR 72-600s to Golden Myanmar Airlines

Air Lease Corporation (ALC) has announced a long term lease agreement with Golden Myanmar Airlines (GMA) for two new ATR 72-600 aircraft, which are scheduled for delivery in January and March of 2014.

Golden Myanmar Airlines (GMA) is Myanmar’s first scheduled domestic and international low cost carrier, established in July 2012. GMA is based in Yangon, Myanmar and is currently operating Airbus A320 jet aircraft on routes to Bangkok and Mandalay. The airline started operations on January 11 with the first route connecting Yangon with Mandalay with Airbus A320-232 XY-AGS (msn 1407).

In other news, Golden Myanmar inaugurated service to Bangkok on May 10, 2013. Previously the airline started Singapore service on April 5, 2013. According to the airline, “During the (Bangkok) flight, four pretty girls represented and expressed the relationship of Myanmar and Thailand. All of them were in full dresses to perform a “Burmese-Thai Onboard Performance”.
