Tailwind Air Cessna 208 Caravan suffers a landing incident in the East River

On Friday, July 3, 2026, a high-profile seaplane incident occurred on the East River in New York City when a Cessna 208 Caravan Amphibian, operated by the premium commuter carrier Tailwind Air, struck a large piece of floating marine debris while executing a routine landing maneuver.

The single-engine turboprop aircraft was operating a scheduled commuter flight into the Skyport Seaplane Base, located off East 23rd Street in Manhattan. As the seaplane touched down on the water’s surface, its left aluminum hull pontoon struck a heavy, semi-submerged wooden timber floating in the river’s active landing lane. The impact caused a severe breach in the forward compartment of the left float, resulting in rapid water ingress that caused the aircraft to list heavily and settle low into the water.

The pilot managed to maintain control of the aircraft, preventing a full capsizing maneuver, and safely taxied the crippled seaplane to a nearby floating dock before the pontoon could completely submerge.

New York City emergency services, including the NYPD Harbor Unit and FDNY marine vessels, responded to the scene to assist. All seven passengers and two crew members on board were safely evacuated directly onto the dock without any injuries. Marine salvage crews quickly deployed auxiliary bilge pumps and containment booms around the aircraft to stabilize the punctured float and prevent environmental contamination from aviation fuel before successfully towing the seaplane to a local maintenance facility for extensive structural hull repairs.

Tailwind Air to launch Boston Harbor to Manhattan flights

Tailwind Air has announced the first-ever airline service fromย Manhattanโ€™s New York Skyport (IATA code: NYS) on East 23rd Streetย toย Boston Harbor (IATA Code: BNH), where a dedicated, seven-minute water taxi will transferย clients to the South Boston waterfront. Flights are approximately seventy-five minutes and will start on August 3, 2021.

While Tailwind Airโ€™s seaplane fleet is young, less than five-years on average, seaplane travel certainly is not. The Manhattan Skyport opened in 1936, hosting popular seaplane travel for decades. For nearly 100 years, seaplane operations have been part of the core transportation landscape of maritime cities such as Seattle, Miami, and Vancouver. โ€œBy reconnecting Boston and New York City via seaplane, we more closely unite two urban cores.โ€

Tailwind Air Service (New York) has announced is launching passenger flights this summer, offering weekday seaplane service between Manhattan’s East River at 23rd Street, Boston Logan and Washington Dulles. Flights will depart Manhattan in the mornings, offering same-day returns from Boston and DC in the evenings.

Tailwinds’ seaplanes will ultimately land in the downtown waterfronts in both Boston and Washington, D.C., but in early stages the flights will land at private terminals in Boston (Logan) and Washington (Dulles).

Tailwind, a new venture, has aligned with Fly The Whale, an established seaplane and private charter operator most popular for its weekend shuttles to the Hamptons and Nantucket. The two companies will utilize each other’s aircraft for increased and efficient service.

Flight times between 23rd Street and Boston Logan or Washington Dulles is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Passengers only need to arrive at 23rd Street and the private terminals at Logan and Dulles 20 minutes prior to take-off, shaving hours off the normal air commute. Single tickets will range from $450-$650 each way.

The carrier defines its operations as:

“Tailwind is a FAA Certified Air Carrier operating amphibious Cessna Caravans in the Northeast United States. We operate shared charter flights between major cities and are also available for charter to countless destinations. All Tailwind flights are operated by Lima NY Corp., FAA Certificate No. L87A495L.”
