New York has always been a city apart for Air France. For the past 75 years, these two cities have laid the foundations of our airlineโ€™s incredible adventure. Air France’s expertise has turned to this very special route to make it a laboratory of creation and innovation that forever transformed the art of air travel.

The story began on June 24, 1946, when a Douglas DC-4 called “Ciel d’รฎle de France” took off from Paris-Orly at 7:00 p.m. ย After 23 hours and 45 minutes, at an average speed of 305 km/h and two stopovers, one in Ireland and the other in Terre Neuve, the first scheduled service landed in New York.

A few months later, in January 1947, the introduction of the Lockheed Constellation made it possible to eliminate one of the outbound stopovers and make the return trip direct. On board, Air France teams invented a modular cabin (with up to 46 seats on a day flight and 22 berths at night) with a service, then called the “Golden Comet”, which forged the airline’s reputation forever.

On November 19, 1953, an improved version of the Lockheed Constellation known as the โ€œConstellation Super Gโ€ enabled Air France to offer even more comfort, with a lounge bar, private cabins and real beds on board. The New York route became legendary with the โ€œParisian Specialโ€ on the outward journey and the โ€œGolden Parisianโ€ on the return.

On January 31, 1960, the propeller age made way for the jet era, with the “Chรขteau de Versailles”, a brand new Boeing 707, which flew from Paris to New York in half the time it used to take, at a cruising speed of 900 km/h, all in unparalleled luxury and comfort.

Ten years later, on June 3, 1970, there was a new revolution for Air France, with the first commercial flight of the Boeing 747. The era of mass air travel by Jumbo Jet had begun, without deviating from our tradition of luxury and the pleasure of travel.

On November 22, 1977, Air France assigned its most spectacular aircraft to this now legendary route. At 2,200 km/h, and with a flight time of 3h30, Concorde freed itself from space and time and allowed Air France to fly faster than the sun.

On November 21, 2009, the largest ever airliner made a landing on the runway at New York-JFK. Air France permanently sealed its name in the record books with the A380 by continuing to provide its 516 passengers with the best in civil aviation.

2014 marked a new milestone in the routeโ€™s history. On flights to this flagship destination, Air France chose to reinvent itself by unveiling, on board a B777, the move upmarket of all its products and services, in particular the new La Premiรจre suite.

In 2020, while the world was experiencing an unprecedented health crisis, Air France was forced to drastically reduce its flight schedule to New York. However, the airline has maintained a regular service between Paris-Charles de Gaulle and New York-JFK, with an air bridge enabling many French and American citizens to be repatriated to their respective countries. Air France has also maintained an important cargo activity to this destination by transporting freight across the Atlantic.

Now, in 2021, Air France is maintaining its “Air France Protect” health commitment on board and is extending its fully flexible policy until the end of December 2021.

Similarly, Air France is constantly adapting its flight schedule to changes in the global health context. With the gradual reopening of borders, this summer the airline is offering up to 3 daily frequencies between Paris and New York-JFK and more than 100 weekly departures from 12 American cities, with connections to Europe via its Paris-Charles de Gaulle hub.

Lufthansa reactivates five Airbus A340-600s for the Munich hub

Lufthansa has made this announcement for the MUC Hub:

Munich Airport is Europe’s only 5-star hub for years and is popular among Lufthansa passengers, globally, not only as the gateway to Bavaria, but as a leading, premium airport offering an inspiring travel journey.

Now as the global travel industry is returning to prior levels of activity, Lufthansa is strengthening its premium services from Munich Airport and will again offer First Class on selected routes. This means, Lufthansa is temporarily reactivating five Airbus long haul A340-600 aircraft with four flight classes, including the award winning First Class with eight seats.

Commencing in summer 2022, the A340-600 will fly from Munich primarily to in North American and Asian destinations. The decision to reactivate these aircraft is due to growing premium demand, for business as well as leisure travel.

In late summer 2023, the first Airbus A350-900, offering First Class, will join the fleet and take off from Munich, bolstering the premium offering at Lufthansaโ€™s 5-star hub.

Before the pandemic began, the Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 fleet consisted of 17 aircraft, 12 of which are in the process of being sold.

A further five aircraft are currently not for sale and will be temporarily reactivated and sold at a later date.

Lufthansa continues to invest in the modernization of its fleet. This past May, the Group purchased 10 additional state-of-the-art long-haul aircraft: five Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and five A350-900s. The first ones will be operating this winter. In this year alone, Lufthansa is taking delivery every month of a new, fuel-efficient Airbus aircraft from the A320neo family. Delivery of 107 additional aircraft Airbus A320neo aircraft is planned up to 2027.

Air Canada introduces a digital solution to simplify COVID-19 related travel requirements

Air Canada is launching a trial of a new digital solution available through its mobile app for customers to securely scan, upload and verify their COVID-19 test results. This feature will help travelers conveniently validate compliance with government health travel requirements prior to arriving at the airport. Air Canadaย has developed its new solution with the support of Amadeus, one of the world’s leading travel technology companies. Initially available beginningย June 29ย for flights fromย Frankfurtย toย Torontoย andย Montreal, the airline plans to roll-out the solution across its network later this summer pending results of the trial and introduce new capabilities so that customers can also pre-validate proofs of vaccination.

For theย Frankfurtย departure trial beginningย June 29, 2021, the new mobile solution will accept COVID-19 PCR test results from Centogene Labs inย Germany. The use of the new function by customers is optional. For users:

  • There is no requirement to download an application, as a link to submit documents will appear on the Air Canada mobile app or mobile website during check-in
  • Within 24 hours of departure, customers checking-in on mobile can securely submit their test results by scanning a QR code of the Centogene lab test result.
  • Customers will then receive a message verifying the test that will enable them to pass through the airport and board their flight without any further requirement to demonstrate the validity of their health documents
  • Customers must bring and retain their original documents for the duration of their journey.

The new feature is based on Amadeus Traveler ID, which automates document verification for travelers in order to minimise queues. Capabilities to manage test results from other labs and also vaccination records will be introduced. To further assist customers, the new solution also provides information about the government health entry requirements of the destination country. It is designed to be compatible with other health passport applications currently under development around the world.

Fiji Airways to resume Boeing 737 MAX flights to New Zealand

"Island of Ovalau"

New Zealandโ€™s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has approved the recertification of the Boeing 737 MAX. The recertification will help Fiji Airways which wants to resume flights to New Zealand using the MAX.

Fiji Airways earlier this month issued this statement concerning the Boeing 737 MAX:

The deal for the five Boeing 737 MAX aircraft was announced on November 23,ย  2016 by Fiji Airways, Boeing and GECAS (the lessor). The acquisition process was explained in detail at the time, together with details about the groundbreaking acquisition deal; that it was a 12-year Sale and Leaseback Agreement with GECAS, for aircraft to be specifically built for Fiji Airways. The lessor is effectively renting the aircraft to Fiji Airways.

The first two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft arrived in December 2018 and January 2019. The remainder (three) were all due to be delivered by mid-2019.

The Boeing 737 MAX fleet was grounded globally in March 2019, following the tragic incidents in Indonesia and Ethiopia. As such, all deliveries of the MAX aircraft were deferred. Production, however, continued. Almost eighteen months was spent by Boeing and the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to resolve the issues which led to the fleetโ€™s grounding. The summary of all the changes required by the FAA isย available here.

In late 2020, the grounding was lifted, first by the FAA for the United States, then by other regulators around the world.

The Civil Aviation Authorities of Australia, New Zealand and Fiji followed with their lifting of the MAX suspensions in late March, after extensive technical safety assessments of this aircraft.

On April 1, 2021, Fiji Airways announced accepting the return to serviceย requirements for the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft stipulated by CAAF, paving the way for these aircraft to arrive in Fiji.

Fiji Airways staff, including engineers, pilots and other experts, along with Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) have been in Seattle Washington, Boeingโ€™s Aircraft Delivery Centre, since the beginning of April for the handover and acceptance process for the aircraft which arrived last week. In other words, they left well before this current outbreak and the process was already underway when the current unfortunate outbreak occurred.

I would like to reiterate that Fiji Airways is contractually obligated to take these aircraft. I have previously explained in statements and press conferences,ย with the last one on August 22, 2020 that aircraft contractual obligations are absolute. Penalties for breaking these contracts are much more severe than accepting and utilizing the aircraft to earn revenue. Most airlines around the world are doing the same.

What Fiji Airways has been able to do, as also explained on August 27, 2020, is re-negotiate and drive down monthly recurring fixed costs by approximately 50%.

The MAX aircraft are the core of Fiji Airways fleet. Since 2018, Fiji Airways has been disposing of its 20-year old Boeing 737 aircraft to be replaced by the MAX aircraft.

As soon as tourism and travel returns, these aircraft will be integral for our economic recovery. Fiji Airways is ready in every way for borders to re-open as soon as it is safe, and lead Fijiโ€™s economic recovery.
