China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines join the SkyTeam alliance

China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) and Shanghai Airlines (Shanghai) formally joined the SkyTeam alliance today (June 21) in a ceremony in Beijing.

Delta starts a new codeshare agreement with China Eastern Airlines

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) and China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) effective June 1 started a new codesharing agreement.

Delta flight numbers have been added to 49 China Eastern-operated domestic flights in China, as well as nonstop trans-Pacific flights connectingย Shanghaiย withย Los Angelesย andย New York. ย China Eastern flight numbers will be added on 38 Delta-operated U.S. domestic flights as well as trans-Pacific service connectingย Detroitย and Atlantaย toย Shanghai.

The codeshare alliance means Delta customers can conveniently book connecting service to 21 Chinese destinations served byย China Easternย from itsย Shanghaiย hub, including Ghangzhou,ย Shenzhenย andย Nanjing. The Delta code also has been added toย China Eastern-operated flights betweenย Shanghaiย andย New Yorkย andLos Angeles.

China Easternย customers will gain access to 21 North American cities on Delta’s domestic network, as well as Delta’s nonstop flights betweenย Shanghaiย andย Detroitย andย Atlanta.

China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) has introduced this promotional logojet for the International Horticultural Expo 2011 (in Xi’an) on its Airbus A330-343X registered B-6129 (msn 791).

China Eastern to build up China Cargo with new investors to fend off competition from Air China

China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) and other investors will inject $308 million into their joint venture China Cargo Airlines Company.

China Eastern’s share of the stock will decline to 51percent from 70 percent as it brings in additional investors to fight off inroads in the cargo market by Air China (Beijing).

The China Cargo subsidiary currently operates three Airbus A300 freighters, two Boeing 747-400F freighters, three Boeing 777F freighters and five McDonnell Douglas MD-11F freighters.

China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines are pushing consolidation of their cargo subsidiaries

China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) and its wholly-owned subsidiary Shanghai Airlines (Shanghai) are now pushing for consolidation of their cargo subsidiaries according to this published report.

China Eastern’s China Cargo Airlines and Shanghai Airlines’ Shanghai Cargo Airlines would be merged if parent China Eastern can reach agreement with some of the external stockholders of both subsidiaries. China Eastern needs to consult with those shareholders to agree on any restructuring.

China Eastern to join the SkyTeam Alliance

China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) announced today (April 16) its intention to join the SkyTeam Alliance. During an official ceremony inย Shanghai, Chinaย Eastern President and Chief Executive Officer Ma Xulun joined the CEOs of SkyTeam member airlines to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) confirming China Eastern’s plans to join the SkyTeam Alliance by mid-2011.

Shanghai Airlines is merged into China Eastern Airlines

Shanghai Airlines (Shanghai) was officially merged into its cross-town rival China Eastern Airlines (Shanghai) on February 8.

With the merger of China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines, the new China Eastern Airlines has operating assets of over 150 billion yuan, 331 mid-sized aircraft and 151 flight destinations. China Eastern Airlines has recent added flights to major cities worldwide such as New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Frankfurt, becoming one of the world’s largest airlines in terms of overall size.
