Swiss reduces its operating loss

Swiss International Air Lines released this statement:

SWISS significantly reduced its operating loss in 2021 from its prior-year level thanks to the transformation initiated, comprehensive cost-saving measures and strong cargo demand.

The operating loss for the year of CHF -427.7 million was around one-third smaller than the previous year (2020: CHF -653.8 million). Total revenue for 2021 amounted to CHF 2.10 billion, a 13.7-per-cent increase year-on-year (2020: CHF 1.85 billion). SWISSโ€™s fourth-quarter operating result was a substantial improvement on the prior-year period, and the company ended the year with a positive cash flow. The transformation process initiated in the course of 2021 is on track, and is being further pursued through actions on the network, product and sustainability fronts. SWISS has also defined a series of concrete measures on the basis of its โ€˜CO2ย Road Map 2030โ€™ to halve its net carbon dioxide emissions from their 2019 levels.

The repercussions of the coronavirus pandemic substantially depressed the annual results of Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) for the 2021 business year, too. Despite this, SWISS was able to significantly reduce its operating loss from its prior-year level, thanks to the transformation it initiated and to comprehensive cost-saving measures. The company also benefited from higher production (especially in the summer months) and continued very strong demand for its cargo services. The operating loss of CHF -427.7 million was around one-third smaller than the previous year (2020: CHF -653.8 million). Total revenue for 2021 amounted to CHF 2.10 billion, a 13.7-per-cent year-on-year improvement (2020: CHF 1.85 billion) but still less than half of its 2019 pre-crisis level.

Year-on-year earnings improvement for the fourth quarter

As expected, the positive earnings recorded for the third-quarter period of 2021 could not be sustained for the seasonally weaker fourth quarter. But SWISS was able to substantially improve on its prior-year fourth-quarter operating result, with the CHF -36.3 million achieved representing a year-on-year improvement of more than CHF 200 million (Q4 2020: CHF โ€‘239.1 million). Fourth-quarter revenue was also significantly increased: the CHF 734.6 million generated was more than double the revenue result for the prior-year period (Q4 2020: CHF 310.9 million).

โ€œWith the transformation that we successfully embarked on in 2021, we are well equipped to remain successful in our markets,โ€ says SWISS CEO Dieter Vranckx. โ€œWe now need to continue our transformation, with a particular focus this year on increasing our capacities to up to 80 per cent of their 2019 levels and on raising our schedulesโ€™ stability.โ€

Liquidity situation improved

Despite the unexpectedly protracted length of the present crisis, SWISSโ€™s rigorous cost and cash management have ensured that the company has at no time utilized more than half of the CHF 1.5 billion bank loan facility which is 85-per-cent guaranteed by the Swiss Confederation. The total amount loaned was also increasingly reduced towards the end of 2021.

โ€œOur restructuring has enabled us to achieve sustainable cost savings of CHF 500 million,โ€ explains SWISS CFO Markus Binkert. โ€œWe were also able to stem the cash drain in the course of 2021 and even generate a positive cash flow for the year as a whole. And in doing so we have laid a firm and promising foundation for SWISSโ€™s financial recovery.โ€

Increase in passenger numbers

SWISS[1]ย transported just under six million passengers in 2021, 22.6 per cent more than in the previous year. A total of 56,372 flights were performed, a 17.3-per-cent increase on 2020. SWISS offered 22.7 per cent more capacity systemwide in 2021 in available-seat-kilometre (ASK) terms, while total traffic volume in revenue passenger-kilometres (RPK) rose 15.2 per cent over the same period. Systemwide seat load factor amounted to 54.4 per cent, 3.6 percentage points below its prior-year level. Seat load factors for European services remained well above those for long-haul flights.

โ€˜reachโ€™ transformation program on track

To respond to the structural market changes that have been prompted by the coronavirus pandemic, SWISS launched a comprehensive transformation program under the name of โ€˜reachโ€™ in the course of 2021. The program entails a 15-per-cent reduction in the size of the SWISS aircraft fleet. It also brought a planned resizing of the SWISS workforce through the elimination of some 1,700 full-time positions by the end of 2021, two thirds of which was achieved through voluntary actions and natural staff turnover. Investments in the SWISS product โ€“ such as the delivery and service entry of the Airbus A320neo and the introduction of the new SWISS Premium Economy Class โ€“ are further key pillars of the transformation program, as are a number of innovative projects on the sustainability front. Further program elements include extensive network optimizations to bring greater design flexibility to the overall offer of leisure and business travel air services in close coordination with sister airline Edelweiss. โ€œWe are on track to realign our company to the changed circumstances and conditions by 2023 and sustainably restore SWISSโ€™s competitive credentials,โ€ CEO Vranckx concludes.

Halving of CO2ย emissions by 2030 planned

While meeting the challenges of the pandemic has substantially occupied the company over the past two years, extensive measures to reduce the environmental impact of its activities remain a key SWISS strategic objective. To this end, the company has defined a number of concrete actions under its โ€˜CO2 Road Map 2030โ€™ to achieve its ambitious goal of halving its net carbon dioxide emissions from their 2019 levels. In addition to billions of investment in its fleet renewal program, these include large-scale optimizations in its flight operations. SWISS will, for instance, be the first passenger airline in the world to utilize the innovative AeroSHARK technology whose biomimetic riblet film enhances an aircraftโ€™s aerodynamics, which will cut SWISSโ€™s annual CO2 emissions by up to 15,200 tons.

A further key element in the SWISS CO2ย Road Map is the companyโ€™s active promotion of the use of innovative technologies. In summer 2021 SWISS became the first scheduled airline to use sustainable aviation fuel in its regular flight operations from Switzerland. And this week SWISS and Swiss clean-tech company Synhelion concludedย  a strategic collaboration to bring solar fuel to market. โ€œSustainable aviation fuel is the key to carbon-neutral flying, which we aim to achieve by 2050,โ€ CEO Vranckx confirms. โ€œSo we are proud to be teaming up with Synhelion to play a pioneering role in the use of solar fuel.โ€

Swiss to be the worldโ€™s first airline to use Synhelion solar fuel

Swiss International Air Lines to be the worldโ€™s first airline to use Synhelion solar fuel

Swiss and the Lufthansa Group have concluded a strategic collaboration with the Synhelion company to bring its solar aviation fuel to market. This will make Swiss the first airline in the world to use โ€˜sun-to-liquidโ€™ fuel. The process devised by Synhelion uses concentrated sunlight to produce carbon-neutral kerosene. With this collaboration, SWISS and Synhelion are playing a pioneering role in the production and the adoption of sustainable aviation fuels.

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) and the Lufthansa Group have concluded a strategic collaboration with ETH Zurich spinoff Synhelion to bring solar aviation fuel to market. This will make SWISS the first airline in the world to use solar kerosene. โ€œOur team-up with Synhelion is founded on our shared vision to make carbon-neutral flying in regular flight operations possible through the use of solar fuel,โ€ explains SWISS Chief Executive Officer Dieter Vranckx. โ€œWe are proud that SWISS will be the first airline in the world to fly with solar kerosene. In partnering with Synhelion, we are supporting Swiss innovation and are actively pursuing and promoting the development, the market introduction and the scaling-up of this highly promising technology for producing sustainable fuels.โ€

Sunlight โ€“ the way to carbon-neutral flying

Synhelion has developed a key technology for manufacturing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from renewable energy sources. The unique procedure uses concentrated solar heat to manufacture syngas which can then be synthesized into kerosene using standard industrial processes. This sun-to-liquid fuel closes the fuel carbon cycle: when combusted, it will only produce as muchย CO2ย as went into its manufacture. The new fuel thus makes a major contribution to effectively decarbonizing air transport.

Synhelion will build the worldโ€™s first-ever facility for the industrial production of solar fuel in Jรผlich (Germany) this year. SWISS is set to become the first customer for the solar kerosene in 2023. Under the collaboration now concluded, SWISS and the Lufthansa Group will support the development of Synhelionโ€™s planned commercial fuel production facility in Spain, too.

Swiss pioneer Synhelion, Swiss, Edelweiss and the Lufthansa Group have been working together since 2020 to help reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of Swiss aviation through the use of solar fuels.

Swiss plans pioneering role in the use of sustainable fuels from renewable sources

The Lufthansa Group and Swiss have been pursuing and promoting comprehensive measures to minimize their carbon dioxide emissions for several years now, and work closely with their partners to steadily further reduce the environmental impact of their business and operational activities. Swiss will be substantially increasing its use of sustainable aviation fuels in the next few years to help achieve its climate objectives. In view of the limited availability of biofuels, however, alternatives will be required. โ€œThis is why we are actively supporting the development of solar fuels,โ€ stresses SWISS CEO Vranckx. โ€œWe want to be a pioneer in their use. So our involvement with Synhelion is a key element in our long-term sustainability strategy.โ€

Swiss stops all flights to Russia, will not use their airspace

Swiss International Air Lines made this announcement:

Due to the current developments, SWISS is no longer operating flights to and from Russia until the end of March. Affected passengers will be informed. SWISS will also no longer use Russian airspace until further notice and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Swiss presents its first aircraft with Premium Economy Class

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) presented its firstย aircraft to be equipped with its new Premium Economy Class at Zurich Airport today. The aircraft, Boeing 777-300ER registrationย HB-JNH, will be deployed on SWISSโ€™s Zurich-Miami services from the beginning of March onwards.

In an initial step, SWISSโ€™s new Premium Economy Class will be successively installed in all 12 of its Boeing 777-300ERs. After Miami, the next SWISS destinations to be served with SWISS Premium Economy-equipped aircraft will be San Francisco on the US West Coast from mid-April and Sรฃo Paulo in Brazil from the end of April. Premium Economy will be available on all of SWISSโ€™s Boeing 777-300ER routes from the end of May onwards.

During the introductory phase for the new class of travel, customers will be offered for-a-fee upgrades to SWISS Premium Economy if it is available on their flight, either when they check in or at the departure gate.

A newly-developed seat for more privacy and comfort

On the Boeing 777-300ER the new SWISS Premium Economy Class will offer 24 latest-generation seats from manufacturer ZIM. The comfortable seats, with fabrics provided by the Bern-based Lantal company, feature a hardshell design that enables them to be easily reclined at no inconvenience to the passenger behind. SWISS is the first airline in the Lufthansa Group to offer its customers this newly-developed ZIM Premium Economy seat.

A sustainable amenity kit and further benefits in the air and on the ground

For greater inflight comfort, SWISS Premium Economy Class travelers are given a complimentary amenity kit. The kit, which is provided by the Skysupply company, makes innovative use of kraft paper and paper pulp in its contents to minimize plastics use. โ€œWe put a strong emphasis at SWISS on making the whole travel chain as sustainable as possible,โ€ explains CCO Tamur Goudarzi Pour, โ€œbecause we donโ€™t just want to be a premium carrier for our guests: we want to live up consistently to all our responsibilities to the climate and to society, too.โ€ SWISS Premium Economy Class travelers are also provided with quality noise-reducing headphones that will further enhance their experience of the inflight audio and video entertainment available on their 15.6-inch at-seat screen.

SWISSโ€™s inflight culinary offering has also been specially modified to accommodate the new class of travel. SWISS Premium Economy guests receive a refreshing welcome drink and are offered a choice of three hot meals.

SWISS Premium Economy travelers can check in two pieces of baggage of up to 23 kilos each โ€“ twice the registered baggage allowance for regular Economy Class travel. They also enjoy discounted access to the SWISS Business Lounges at Zurich and Geneva airports and to Zurich Airportโ€™s SWISS Arrival Lounge.

Swiss adopts new AeroSHARK riblet film technology to further reduce its flightsโ€™ carbon emissions

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) is to become the first passenger airline in the world to take advantage of the new AeroSHARK aircraft skin technology by applying the innovative riblet film to its Boeing 777-300ER passenger aircraft fleet. Its investment in this new technology will enable SWISS to substantially reduce its Boeing 777 fleetโ€™s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and fuel consumption. AeroSHARK is a new biomimetic film which has been jointly developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF. The film features millions of โ€˜ribletsโ€™ โ€“ small protrusions just 50 micrometers high โ€“ which replicate the highly hydrodynamic skin of sharks, and thus reduces an aircraftโ€™s aerodynamic drag wherever it is applied.

Annualย CO2ย emission savings of up toย 15,200 tons

By applying a total of 950 square meters of AeroSHARK riblet film to the fuselage and engine nacelle surfaces of a Boeing 777, fuel savings of some 1.1 per cent can be achieved. This will reduce its annual fuel consumption by over 4,800 tonnes and the total annual carbon dioxide emissions of the SWISS Boeing 777 fleet by up to 15,200 tonnes โ€“ the amount emitted respectively by some 87 long-haul flights from Zurich to Mumbai.

SWISS will successively install the new AeroSHARK riblet film on its Boeing 777 fleet from mid-2022 onwards. The work will be performed when each aircraftโ€™s downtimes permit.

SWISS involved in AeroSHARKโ€™s development, too

SWISS has also supported Lufthansa Technik and BASF in their development of the AeroSHARK film for the Boeing 777. Back in summer 2021, the aerodynamic performance of a Boeing 777 wing was precisely monitored throughout a scheduled SWISS Zurich-San Francisco flight. The data collected have enabled Lufthansa Technik to devise high-precision 3D airflow simulation models which will be used in the near future to develop the AeroSHARK riblet film for additional application to the Boeing 777โ€™s wings, to tap further fuel and emission savings potential.

Carbon-neutral by 2050

The adoption of the new AeroSHARK technology is a key initiative in SWISSโ€™s broader endeavors to minimize its carbon dioxide emissions. It also underlines the companyโ€™s commitment to promoting the use of innovative technologies. SWISS has set itself the objectives of halving its net CO2ย emissions from their 2019 levels by 2030 and of making its business and operations carbon-neutral by 2050.

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) will offer its customers a portfolio of destinations in its Winter 2021/2022 schedules that is as extensive as it was in pre-pandemic times. A total of 90 destinations will receive SWISS service from Zurich and/or Geneva, with the aim of offering travelers the widest possible range of routes and onward connections. The extent of the winter offer is further boosted by certain classic summer destinations, especially around the Mediterranean and in Eastern Europe, continuing to be served in the coming winter timetable period. SWISS also plans to resume service on its long-haul Geneva-New York route on selected days of the week from mid-December onwards. And the carrier will further increase its winter services at times of particularly high demand, such as the Christmas holiday period and the winter sports season. All in all, SWISS will be offering around half of the capacity it provided in 2019 in the coming winter schedules.

Despite the continuing and still-changeable travel restrictions, Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) will be offering a wide range of services in its coming Winter 2021/2022 schedules, to perform its mission of keeping Switzerland connected with the rest of Europe and the world.

With 90 points served from Zurich and/or Geneva, SWISSโ€™s winter destination portfolio will be as extensive as it was in Winter 2019, albeit with fewer frequencies. SWISS customers will be offered 81 destinations from Zurich and 26 from Geneva. All in all, SWISS plans to again be offering around 50% of the capacity it provided in 2019 in the coming winter schedules.

Over 80 points from Zurich

SWISS plans to serve a total of 60 short-haul and 21 long-haul destinations from Zurich in the coming winter schedules. Short-haul destinations with the most frequencies from Zurich include Berlin, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Lisbon, London, Malaga and Stockholm and various points in Eastern Europe such as Kyiv and Belgrade. On the long-haul front, the focus will be on such key centers as Chicago, Miami, New York, Sรฃo Paulo, Dubai, Johannesburg and Tel Aviv. The coming winter schedules also extend to various classic summer destinations which this year will continue to be served in the winter months. These include Alicante, Malta, Marseille, Palermo and Thessaloniki. Sarajevo and Tallinn will also continue to receive SWISS service in the coming winter period, as will the Albanian capital of Tirana, for which SWISS took over service this summer from its sister airline Edelweiss.

Resumption of long-haul Geneva-New York services currently being planned

A total of 25 European destinations will receive SWISS service from Geneva in the coming winter timetable period. The most frequently served of these will include Athens, Lisbon and Porto. Travelers from Geneva will also be offered a number of destinations this winter which have previously received only summer services. These include Madeira, Sharm El Sheikh and Tenerife. SWISS is further introducing non-stop service this winter between Geneva and Denmarkโ€™s capital Copenhagen. The winter sports season will be a particular focus of SWISSโ€™s Geneva services: for customers from the UK and Scandinavia especially, the carrier will offer an extensive flight program. SWISS also plans to resume its long-haul services between Geneva and New York on selected days of the week with effect from mid-December: up to four weekly flights are envisaged on the route from December 14 onwards.

Two-step publication

The winter timetable period will run from 31 October 2021 to 27 March 2022. For greater planning, the new SWISS winter schedules will be published in two steps. The schedules up to and including January 16, 2022 are published today (September 22), while the definitive schedules for mid-January to the end of March 2022 will be published in October. The associated stabilizing finalization of these may also entail cancellations of flights originally planned. Any customers whose flight is cancelled may rebook free of charge or have their ticket fully refunded.

Swiss trials a new concept to reduce food waste on board

Swiss International Air Lines is trialling the possibility of offering its customers unsold food items at reduced prices on its services from Geneva, in collaboration with its partner โ€œToo Good To Goโ€.

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) has long put a firm emphasis on environmental issues within its corporate culture, and takes sustainable actions at various levels to ensure the optimum use of resources in its business and operations. To the same ends, the company is seeking to reduce the volumes of fresh food items which remain unsold on its flights and must therefore be thrown away. SWISS already uses historical sales data for each flight to tailor its fresh product uplifts as closely as possible to likely passenger demand. But the company is now taking a further step in this direction, by teaming up with its partner โ€œToo Good To Goโ€ to offer at reduced prices any fresh food items which remain unsold. To test customer acceptance, a trial of the new approach is being conducted in August and September on the last flights of the day from Geneva on SWISSโ€™s European network.

A simple procedure

The new concept consists in offering any fresh food items that remain unsold on certain services at the end of the flight concerned. These itemsโ€™ availability is communicated via an inflight announcement, and interested passengers are offered a bag containing one, two or three such fresh food items at one third of their usual price. The bagโ€™s contents are not revealed in advance, and remain a surprise for the purchaser.

The new approach is being trialled in collaboration with โ€œToo Good To Goโ€, the worldโ€™s biggest app platform for connecting companies with users to reduce food waste. โ€œManaging waste on board is an important part of our commitment to greater sustainability, โ€œ stresses SWISS CCO Tamur Goudarzi Pour. โ€œWe hope to significantly reduce unused food on board our aircrafts by introducing this service. Thinking about sustainability in all our products, services and processes is part of our SWISS DNA.โ€

โ€œThe first results from these trials have been promising,โ€ adds SWISSโ€™s Head of Western Switzerland Romain Vetter. โ€œThe new approach has been well received by our passengers on the flights concerned. Weโ€™re now awaiting a final analysis of the trialsโ€™ findings to decide if we should extend it to further routes.โ€
