United adds five new flights from the U.S. to London

United Airlines has announced it is adding five new flights to London’s Heathrow Airport, including two more flights from Newark, additional trips from both Denver and San Francisco, as well as an all-new direct flight from Boston.

The new service begins in March of 2022 and with these additions, United will be the only U.S. carrier to offer nonstop service between the nation’s top seven business markets and London. United will offer 22 flights per day from the U.S. to London, and more flights between New York City and London than any other U.S. carrier. London was the most booked international destination for United’s business customers in October, and the airline expects this trend to continue into 2022.

These new flights build on United’sย largest-ever trans-Atlantic expansionย announced earlier this month. United currently operates a total of seven flights toย Heathrowย from the U.S.: two daily flights fromย New York/Newarkย andย Washington D.C., and one daily flight fromย Chicago,ย Houston, andย San Francisco. In December, service will increase to 10 daily flights, with additional flights fromย New York/Newarkย andย Chicago, just in time for the winter holidays.

The five new flights will make hopping across the pond easier and more comfortable for both leisure and business travelers, as United will:

  • Resume daily flights fromย Denverย and add a second daily flight operated by a Boeing 787-9.

United to launch hourly shuttle service betweenย Newark and Washington Reagan National Airport onย Oct. 31

United Airlines is making travel betweenย New York Cityย andย Washington D.C.ย easier and more convenient, announcing today it will launch new nearly hourly shuttle service betweenย New York/Newark Liberty International Airport and Reagan National Airport onย Oct. 31, and is adding five new flights between LaGuardia Airport and Washington Dulles Airport. In total, United will operate about 32 flights each day between theย NYCย and D.C. areas, a 78% increase and the most flights of any other airline.

United Airlines is also giving all of itsย New York Cityย customers an upgrade: startingย October 31, all of the airline’s departures from Newark Liberty International Airport, John F.ย Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport will include a first-class option, including the 737 MAX-8 and the CRJ550 โ€“ the world’s first 50-seat regional jet with first-class seats and amenities. United will now offer over 7,000 premium seats to customers in New York City, more than any other airline, and the most in the airline’s history.

United’s CRJ550 is the world’s first 50-seat regional aircraft designed to offer first class seats and amenities. Originally designed to seat 70 plus passengers, United’s CRJ-550 configuration maximizes customer comfort and has revolutionized the regional flying experience with features like:

  • 10 seats in United FirstSM, 20 seats in Economy Plusยฎ, and 20 economy seats
  • Space for every customer to bring a roller bag on board.
  • A self-serve refreshment center for United First customers, featuring a wide assortment of pre-packaged snacks and beverages.

  • The ability to stay connected while inflight with United Wi-Fi.
  • Complimentary personal device entertainment service, which enables passengers to view hundreds of movies and television shows in flight.

United is giving customers more choice than ever before when selecting their preferred onboard experience and providing MileagePlusยฎย members more opportunity for upgrades. United will be flying its new 737-MAX-8 on 22 daily flights from theย NYC-area. Featuring 16 United First seats and 54 Economy Plus seats โ€“ more than double the number of extra leg room seats offered by competing airlines on similar-sized aircraft. Customers have the opportunity to enjoy seatback entertainment in every seat, Bluetooth connectivity, larger overhead bins, and the industry’s fastest available Wi-Fi elevating the flying experience to a new standard.

United’s new shuttle service between Newark Liberty International Airport and Reagan National Airport will operate seven days a week, with 18 flights offering nearly hourly serviceย between 6AM and 10PM, more frequency than any other airline.

The airline will also operate five daily flights between Newark Liberty International Airport and Washington Dulles Airport. The new flights between LaGuardia Airport and Washington Dulles Airport will bring the daily flight count to nine and provide consistent service seven days a weekย between 6 AM and 10 PM.

United Airlines beats profit forecast in the third quarter, on track to meet 2022 targets

United Airlines (UAL) today announced third-quarter 2021 financial results. Despite the impact of the COVID-19 Delta variant in the third quarter, the company remains confidently on track to achieve the range of longer term financial targets laid out as part of its United Next plan earlier this summer, and to reduce CASM-ex1ย below 2019 levels next year.

Citing the rebound in premium leisure travel, re-opening of European borders next month, continued recovery of business travel and early indications of loosening travel restrictions in key Pacific markets, United also announced plans to increase international capacity by 10% in 2022 – while keeping domestic capacity flat to 2019. The plan will capitalize on already improving international margins and United’s ideally situated coastal hubs that have powered the airline’s recent success in launching new routes toย Africaย andย India. Expected flying at record levels toย Europe,ย Latin America,ย India,ย Africaย and theย Middle Eastย in summer 2022, will be enabled by the anticipated return of United’s Pratt & Whitney-powered Boeing 777s to the fleet in 2022, which – when combined with already announced approximatelyย $2.2 billionย in structural cost reduction and planned gauge growth – will allow United to keep CASM-ex1ย in check as it continues on the path to recovery.

“The recovery was delayed by the Delta variant, but the United team remains focused on our long-term vision โ€“ and not getting sidetracked by near-term volatility โ€“ meaning we’re solidly on track to achieve the targets we set for 2022,” said United Airlines CEOย Scott Kirby. “From the return of business travel and the planned re-opening ofย Europeย and early indications for opening in the Pacific, the headwinds we’ve faced are turning to tailwinds, and we believe that United is better positioned to lead the recovery than any airline in the world. Our recovery will be supported by investments in technology and other efficiencies that will give our employees the tools they need to take great care of our customers – and keep costs under control. I am grateful to our United team members for their continued commitment to our customers, because it has been essential to our ability to weather the pandemic, and it will fuel our success in the years ahead.”

United becomes first airline to introduce PayPal QR codes as inflight payment option

United and PayPal today announced a new way to make touch-free inflight purchases, even in areas without Wi-Fi. Starting next month, United customers on select flights can simply show a flight attendant the PayPal QR Code in the PayPal app and use it to buy snacks, drinks and other inflight purchases while onboard.

United is the first airline to offer PayPal QR Codes, and this partnership is part of United’s easy-to-use, industry-leading suite of contactless payment tools. United was the first airline to give customers in economy cabins the option toย pre-order snacks and beveragesย from the airline’s app and website, and also offers customers the ability to easily store payment information in aย digital wallet.

PayPal QR Codes can be used on select flights departing from Chicago O’ Hare International Airport in November and before the end of the year, will extend to all flights across the entire network where contactless payment is available.

How It Works

  • If you haven’t already, download the PayPal app and set your preferred payment method for QR code payments, prior to leaving the gate
  • To make an inflight purchase, Click the ‘Pay with QR codes’ button
  • Then click the ‘In-flight Purchase’ button
  • Show the QR code to the flight attendant to scan
  • Look for an emailed confirmation receipt upon landing

United’s New Buy-On-Board Menu

Customers can pay using PayPal QR Codes to enjoy one of many new food and beverage offerings United launched this year. In June, United unveiled itsย refreshed buy-on-board menu, which includes:

  • Three New Snack Boxes:ย A Tapas snack box with European-inspired offerings; a Takeoff snack box with high-protein options; a Recline snack box with movie theater themed treats.
  • New A la Carte Snack Options:ย Including sweet potato “tortilla” chips with roasted pepper salsa, trail mix and chocolate-covered dried fruit.
  • New Adult Beverage Options:ย Mango White Clawยฎ; red, white and sparkling wine, and new beer options such as Breckenridge Brewery Juice Drop Hazy IPA and Michelob ULTRAยฎ.
  • New Fresh Options:ย Last month, United also added five new fresh retail offerings to its buy-on-board menu including:
    • Morning Menu:
      • Beatrix Market Chia Seed Pudding:ย Beatrix Market’sย signature Chia Seed Pudding with fresh mango and toasted coconut
      • Bacon, Egg and Cheese Spiral Croissant:ย Shoulder bacon, fried egg patty with black pepper and cheddar cheese on a butter spiral croissant
    • Afternoon/Evening Menu:
      • Beatrix Market Mediterranean Grain Bowl:ย Protein-packed grain bowl features bulgur, a black lentil and carrot salad, roasted zucchini and bell peppers and is served with a bright lemon vinaigrette

New Domestic Premium Cabin Menu Items

United also introduced brand-new meal offerings to customers seated in domestic premium cabins on flights over 1,500 miles and hub-to-hub flights over 800 miles.

  • The enhanced meal service includes a choice of entrees โ€“ including fresher options like egg scramble with plant-based chorizo and grilled chicken breast with orzo and lemon basil pesto โ€“ sides and dessert.
  • United has also teamed with Eli’s Cheesecake to create a uniquely United chocolate pie flavor called “Pie in the Sky.”
