Icelandair is operating TF-LLL on a worldwide National Geographic tour

Icelandair has begun another “National Geographic” worldwide tour with their 2000-built Boeing 757-256, registered as TF-LLL (msn 29307).

Its arrival at Boeing Field (BFI) in Seattle, as flight “ICE 1238”, was delayed by at least 1/2 hour due to low clouds and reduced visibility which forced the flight to be vectored several times and included a missed approach before finally touching down.

THE FUTURE OF INNOVATION

Touch down in Osaka and transfer to Kyoto, a center of innovation and Japanโ€™s imperial capital for more than 1,000 years. The cityโ€™s Buddhist temples, shrines, and serene gardens vividly recall the glory of the Japanese empire and have been collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Weโ€™ll meet up with Peter Landers, Tokyo bureau chief for The Wall Street Journalย ,ย who will share insights gleaned from more than 20 yearsโ€™ experience reporting on Asia.

Begin our exploration at Shimadzu, one of the worldโ€™s top manufacturers of technologies for use in the medical field. Tour the companyโ€™s head office and cutting-edge laboratory. Then visit the Kyoto Handicraft Center for a firsthand look at the creation multipurpose furniture, followed by a talk with the president of HOSOO, a renowned Japanese textile company founded in 1688. Later, delve deeper during a presentation of how electronic giants like Panasonic are working with the Kyoto-based GO ON consortium of craftspeople to create products that merge technology and tradition. In the afternoon, opt to visit the colorful and aromatic alleys of Nishiki Market, one of the most popular food markets in the city, and sample local specialties. Then venture into the busy streets below and check in to our hotel for a panel discussion with a Wall Street Journal reporter. Weโ€™ll learn about the research that is leading the way for global advances in our understanding of the human brain.

The next day, visit a brain research center and learn about current projects and potential breakthroughs. During our stay in the Gobi, explore the landscape of steep red plateaus, following in the footsteps of Genghis Khan. Explore the mesmerizing Moltsog Els sand dunes, then meet a nomadic family for tea. Hike between the towering canyon walls of Yol Valley, ride horseback across the steppe, and learn how to construct a ger. Our evening panel discussion focuses on the future of renewable energy, with commentary from glaciologist and National Geographic Emerging Explorer M Jackson.

Explore Iceland’s active geology and its ancient history on a tour of the Golden Circle. Visit Thingvellir National Park, home to the oldest democratically elected parliament still in operation; glimpse thrilling eruptions at the Geysir geothermal area; and take in the stunning view of Gullfoss waterfall. Later, enjoy a soak in the Blue Lagoon. Alternatively, set out on a snowmobiling adventure atop a glacier this afternoon.

The next day, experience Iceland’s natural wonders across Langjรถkull, Icelandโ€™s second largest glacier. Choose to venture into the mouth of the dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano and descend alongside expert guides to the floor of the vast magma chamber. Air Dolomiti upgrades its business class with espresso

Air Dolomiti has unveiled a refreshed business class featuring espresso coffee and new ceramic service.

Air Dolomiti has selected Caffe Illy which combines nine different Arabica blends.

Espresso coffee will be available for all business class passengers and for a fee for economy passengers.

The airline states;

“In Business Class, you can now find new elegant crockery accompanied by steel cutlery and sophisticated glassware. Weโ€™ve also chosen to bring real, authentic Italian espresso to high altitudes with Illy Caffe.”

ITA Airways will launch a new route from Rome (Fiumicino) to Sofia, Bugaria.

The route will operate three days a week starting on October 2.

airBaltic graduates 8 students from its Pilots Academy

airBaltic made this announcement:

On September 5, 2022, 8 students graduated from the Latvian airlineโ€™s airBaltic Pilot Academy, receiving a commercial pilot license upon completion of the full-time airline transport pilot program. In addition, already the 14thgroup of 15 students began their professional pilot studies.

ย Martin Gauss, Chief Executive Officer of airBaltic: โ€œThis is the largest group of new students we have seen so far at the airBaltic Pilot Academy. It marks a significant milestone for the program, which has so far prepared a total of 65 commercial pilots. We also congratulate the determined students of the 14th group who started their studies today.โ€

As of this spring, new students of the airBaltic Pilot Academy will have to cover the costs of studies until private pilot licence level, costing approximately EUR 15ย 000. After passing airBaltic pilot assessment and becoming an employee of the company, the airline will provide financing for the rest of the studies.

Overall, there are now 75 active students at airBaltic Pilot Academy. Most of the students are from Baltic countries, however, there are students also from other EU countries such as Germany, France, Finland, Spain and Italy among others. Around 9% of airBaltic Pilot Academy students are female.

Allegiant repays the $24.8 million dollar emergency relief loan

Allegiant hasย announced it has repaid the $24.8 million dollar emergency relief loan the company received under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act in April 2020.

The government assistance, coupled with proactive initiatives from Allegiant and its employees, allowed the airline to preserve liquidity and strategically position itself to withstand the uncertainty surrounding the outbreak of COVID-19. Allegiant’s unique business model, focused entirely on leisure travel, helped the company respond to the unprecedented challenges that the entire airline industry faced when demand for air travel dropped so suddenly and precipitously in 2020, as a result of the global pandemic.

The CARES Act, signed into law in April 2020, established the Payroll Support Program to provide assistance to U.S. companies that were impacted by the global pandemic. The funds helped Allegiant support the airline’s employee salaries and benefits.

Turkish Airlines became the official sponsor of the UEFA Champions League

Turkish Airlines becomes the first airline to sponsor the UEFA Champions League, which will have its 2023 final in Istanbul.

Bringing millions of people from 129 countries of the world together on the skies every year, Turkish Airlines became the official sponsor of the UEFA Champions League, one of the most followed sports competitions in the world. This prestigious partnership, which will be one of the most significant sponsorship deals in the history of Turkish sports, is of particular importance as this seasonโ€™s UEFA Champions League final will take place at Istanbulโ€™s Atatรผrk Olympic Stadium on June 10, 2023.

UEFA Champions League organization which Turkish Airlines will participate as the official sponsor reaches 678 million viewers in 200 countries via over 70 broadcasters. Fans also participate in the Champions League excitement on social media with 28 million engagements. Turkish Airlines will have wide range of exposure, logo and name rights before, during and after the matches including LED screens surrounding the field. As part of the deal, Tรผrkiyeโ€™s national flag carrier will also partner with the UEFA Super Cup, the UEFA Futsal Champions League finals, and the UEFA Youth League finals as the official sponsor.

The announcement of Turkish Airlinesโ€™ UEFA Champions League sponsorship deal took place at the Haliรง Congress Center in Istanbul with the participation of Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat along with senior Turkish Airlines executives and UEFA President Aleksander ฤŒeferin along with UEFA Marketing Director Guy-Laurent Epstein.

Turkish Airlines was the first airline in the world to partner with UEFA as its official airline sponsor for the UEFA EURO 2016. Flag carrier airline also realized sponsorships with prominent teams such as FC Barcelona, Manchester United FC, Borussia Dortmund, Olympique de Marseille and River Plate. Air New Zealand introduces the first black Star Alliance aircraft

Air New Zealand has introduced its new Airbus A321neo (ZK-OYB) painted in a black version of the Star Alliance livery.

Silver Airways retires its last SAAB 340Bs

Silver Airways retired its its last SAAB 340B on September 4. The fleet has been replaced with newer ATR 42s and ATR 72s.

The airline made this announcement on September 4:

Thank you for flying with us today on this historic moment in Silverโ€™s history as we bid farewell to our Saab 340B from our fleet. We would like to thank the dedicated Team Members of Silver and Seaborne that operated these airplanes and our passengers for the past 10 years.

Israel to ban 4-engine airliners including all Boeing 747s

Israel through its Airport Authority is planning to ban all four-engined aircraft including the Boeing 747s as of March 31, 2023.

The ban is a response to growing concerns about air pollution.

Airlines will not be able to use these aircraft for the next summer season.

El Al Israel Airlines has already retired its Boeing 747-400s.

Cargo airlines will be the most impacted.

Friday Harbor Seaplanes Turbo Otter crashes near Whidbey Island, WA with 10 people on board

Friday Harbor Seaplanes (San Juan Islands, WA) de Havilland DHC-3T Turbo Otter, registered as N725TH (above photo), crashed in Muting Bay close to Whidbey Island on Sunday, September 4.

The seaplane was headed to Renton Airport in Seattle.

One person is dead and nine others are missing.

The airline issued this statement on social media:

 

The team at Friday Harbor Seaplanes is heartbroken, we donโ€™t know any details yet regarding the cause of the accident. We are working with the FAA, NTSB and Coast Guard. We have been in communication with the families. We are praying for the families involved, including our pilot and his family.

Coast Guard responds to crashed plane in Mutiny Bay, WA

The Coast Guard is responding to a report of a plane that crashedย Sunday afternoonย in Mutiny Bay west of Whidbey Island.

Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound Command Center received a report at 3:11 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) that a float plane crashed with nine adults and one child aboard.ย The plane was en route to Renton Municipal Airport after departingย from Fridayย Harbor.ย 

The following assets are currently involved in the search:

87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Osprey and crew
87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Blue Shark and crew (en route)
Coast Guard Station Seattle 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew

Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento C-27 aircraft and crew

Additionally, first responders from South Whidbey Fire, Island County Sheriffโ€™s Office and Snohomish County Sheriffโ€™s office are on scene.ย 

One deceased individual was recovered by crewsย on scene. Nine individuals remain unaccountedย for,ย and a safety zone has been put into effect to help facilitate search efforts.

Theย cause of the incident is unknown at this time.

The small airline operates scheduled flights between Seattle (Renton) and Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor on San Juan Island.
