Airberlin downsizes its tourist hub at Nuremberg

Airberlin (airberlin.com) (Berlin) is working to trim its unprofitable routes. The carrier has announced it is downsizing ย its mainly tourist hub at Nuremberg for the coming winter schedule. The carrier will retain some holiday routes to southern destinations.

Airberlin loses $72.3 million in the second quarter

Airberlin (airberlin.com) (Berlin-Tegel) reported a net loss in the second quarter of $72.3 million.

In other news the company is in discussions with its new Oneworld partner about code sharing which is expected to start in November.

Air Berlin to join the Oneworld Alliance

Air Berlin (stylized as airberlin) (airberlin.com) (Berlin-Tegel) is planning to join oneworldยฎ, adding Europeโ€™s fifth largest airline and Germanyโ€™s second biggest carrier to the airline alliance.

Air Berlin Group member Niki (Vienna) will become an affiliate member of the alliance.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between Air Berlin and oneworld was completed in the airlineโ€™s Berlin home city last night (July 26), with a formal alliance membership agreement to be signed soon.

Air Berlin is expected to start flying as part of oneworld in early 2012 โ€“ just weeks before the opening of the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport, which is being built as a major new hub for Europe.

Airberlin’s pilots vote for a three hour strike

Airberlin’s (Berlin-Tegel) pilots have voted to strike for three hours according to this published report in the New York Times.

Airberlin Boeing 737-800 aborts takeoff, runs off the runway at Dortmund

Airberlin (Berlin-Tegel) had an accident at Dortmund this morning (January 3). Boeing 737-86J D-ABKF (msn 37745) with 165 passengers and six crew members aborted its takeoff to Las Palmas and slid off the end of the runway. There were no injuries.
