Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings reports 2Q earnings of $32.7 million

Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings (New York-JFK) for the three months ended June 30, 2010, AAWWโ€™s net income increased 188% to $32.7 million, or $1.25 per diluted share, on revenues of $356.2 million and pretax earnings of $61.7 million. Solid operating and financial results for the quarter compared with net income of $11.3 million, or $0.54 per share, on revenues of $240.0 million and pretax earnings of $17.8 million for the three months ended June 30, 2009.

Excluding one-time items, adjusted net income in the second quarter of 2010 increased 319% to $47.5 million, or $1.82 per share, compared with $11.3 million, or $0.54 per share, in the second quarter of 2009. Pretax earnings in the second quarter of 2010 included a net expense of $16.2 million for anticipated legal settlements, as well as a $2.2 million gain on disposal of aircraft assets. There were no one-time items in the second quarter of 2009.

Iraqi Airways is declared bankrupt

Iraqi Airways (Baghdad) yesterday (May 26) was declared bankrupt by the Iraqi Government due to the ongoing debt-related lawsuit with the government of Kuwait concerning the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq under Saddam Hussein. Iraq’s Transportation Minister stated it would take three years to close down the state-owned company. The company may be sold to a private investor which would disconnect the government from the debt.

Evergreen International has a tentative agreement with its flight crews

Evergreen International Airlines (Marana) crewmembers, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Intโ€™l (ALPA) reached a tentative agreement that will result in a new contract if ratified by the crewmembers. Mediated contract talks ended on April 16 when the pilotsโ€™ negotiating committee achieved the tentative agreement with their management.

Hellenic Imperial Airways to start Athens-Johannesburg scheduled flights

Hellenic Imperial Airways (Athens) in December 2009 was awarded route authority to fly from Athens International Airport to Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport, Dubai International Airport, and Johannesburg International Airport as the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority redistributed the rights of some former Olympic Airlines routes as stipulated by the European Union. Hellenic Imperial will start scheduled Boeing 747 operations on the Athens-Johannesburg route on June 8, 2010.

MK Airlines ceases operations

MK Airlines (Ostend) ceased all operations on April 9 and surrendered its AOC on April 12.

On a cold winter’s night in Stockholm on the Jumbo Hostel

Passengers (hostel guests) are resting well tonight inside the warm Boeing 747-212B 3D-NEE (msn 21162) now known as the Jumbo Hostel in Stockholm. The unique place to stay is shown this evening in freezing cold weather with snow on the fuselage. The Arlanda Airport (ARN) ATC Tower is pictured in the background. The Jumbo now has a new large blue advertisement on the fuselage for NCC (a construction company).

Northwest Airlines retires the last Boeing 747-200F (updated)

Northwest Airlines-NWA (subsidiary of Delta Air Lines) (Minneapolis/St. Paul) operated the last of its Boeing 747-200 freighter flights on revenue flights on Saturday (December 19) as two of the giant aircraft touched down in Chicago and Los Angeles carrying full loads of cargo. Northwest flight NW 908 (with N632NW) departed Osaka and arrived in Chicago (ORD) with 73 tons of cargo, an 89 percent load factor (the last revenue flight). Northwest flight NW 906 (with N639US) departed Shanghai and arrived in Los Angeles (LAX) with 81 tons of cargo, a 99% load factor. Delta has parked its 10 wholly- owned Northwest 747-200 freighters, where they will remain in long-term storage. Two other 747s were returned recently to a leasing agent.

Southern Air to operate two 777Fs for Thai

Southern Air (2nd) (Norwalk and Anchorage) will operated two Boeing 777F long-range freighters for ย Thai Airways International (Bangkok) from BKK to Europe starting in early 2010. On July 30, 2007 Southern Air was acquired by Oak Hill Partners and it was merged with Cargo 360 forming Southern Air Holdings. At the time Oak Hill Capital Partners anticipated Southern Air would soon operate a fleet of six Boeing 777F freighters for its ACMI operations. Southern Air is also intending to operate the new 747-800F in the future. Southern Air currently operates a fleet of Boeing 747-200F and 747-300F freighters.

Sundt Atlanta Skybridge starts operations

Sundt Atlanta Skybridge (Oslo-Gardermoen) is a joint venture between Air Atlanta Icelandic (Keflavik) and corporate jet operator Sundt Air (Oslo). The new JV will operate cargo charters. Boeing 747-230B (F) TF-ARM (msn 22363) was repositioned to OSL on June 24, 2009 and is now operating charter flights while still painted in basic Saudi Arabian Airlines colors.
