ANA to gradually replace the DHC-8-300s with newer DHC-8-400s

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) as part of its Corporate Plan FY2011 (starting on April 1, 2011) is begin phasing out the Bombardier DHC-8-300s and replacing them with newer DHC-8-400s (Q400s).

ANA also plans to launch flights between Tokyo (Narita) and Chengdu in June 2011, its first service to an inland destination in China.

ANA is also planning to move ahead with a new budget airline subsidiary.

ANA to take delivery of 1,000th built Boeing 767

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo) in February 2011 will take delivery of the 1,000th built Boeing 767. The start of final assembly was celebrated yesterday at Boeing.

ANA, United and Continental obtain anti-trust immunity for the Pacific

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo), United Airlines (Chicago) and Continental Airlines (Houston) announced the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued its final order granting anti-trust immunity enabling the three carriers to execute a trans-Pacific joint venture under which they intend to jointly develop flight schedules and sales activities.

Customers traveling between the Americas and Asia will enjoy more convenient flight schedules, with a broader range of fare and product options, once the joint venture is implemented.

ANA’s fiscal 2Q profit increases to $229 million

ANA-All Nippon Airways (Tokyo) produced a fiscal second quarter profit of $229 million.

ANA is granted antitrust immunity for its trans-Pacific JV with United/Continental

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo), United Airlines, Continental Airlines have been granted antitrust immunity (ATI) by the Japanese Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism, in accordance with the Civil Aeronautics Act, enabling the carriers to establish a joint venture and to combine their trans-Pacific networks.

The U.S. Dept. of Transportation (DOT) granted United, Continental and ANA tentative ATI approval on October 6, 2010. Upon final approval by DOT and completion of an open skies agreement between the United States and Japan, the three carriers intend to begin implementation of their joint venture in the spring of 2011.

The carriers intend to jointly develop flight schedules and sales activities.

ANA changes 15 Dreamliner orders to 787-9s

ANA (All Nippon Airways (Tokyo) has decided to change 15 of its current orders for the Boeing 787-8 aircraft to the 787-9 model. ANA currently has a total of 55 orders for the Dreamliner.

The 787-9 aircraft is an extended body version of the 787-8 model, appropriate for short, mid-haul and long-haul international routes. The model will also meet the increasing need for 400 seat-capacity aircraft for domestic routes, and will further improve the flexibility of our fleet and network planning. Furthermore, like the 787-8 model, it is a highly fuel efficient aircraft which will enable ANA to reduce operating costs and carbon dioxide emission.

ANA and First Eastern to start a new low-cost airline

ANA (All Nippon Airways) (Tokyo-Haneda) and First Eastern Investment Group have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to establish the first Japanese low cost airline. The new airline will operate both international and domestic short-haul routes out of Osaka (Kansai International Airport). The new airline will operate independently from ANA.

The new company will be established in the second half of 2010 with Japanese investors holding a 66.7% stake of which ANA will hold a 39% stake and First Eastern will hold the remaining 33.3% stake, the maximum foreign ownership currently allowed for an airline in Japan. The new company’s air transport operations are expected to commence in the second half of 2011.

The choice of Kansai is an interesting choice since the relatively new airport is considered a high cost airport.

Boeing delays the first 787 delivery to ANA to mid first quarter 2011

Boeing (Chicago, Seattle, Wichita and Charleston) said that it now expects delivery of the first 787 to ANA in the middle of the first quarter 2011.

The delivery date revision follows an assessment of the availability of an engine needed for the final phases of flight test this fall.

While Boeing works closely with Rolls-Royce to expedite engine availability, flight testing across the test fleet continues as planned.

Boeing said last month that the cumulative impact of a series of issues, including supplier workmanship issues related to the horizontal stabilizer and instrumentation delays, could push first delivery of the 787 a few weeks into 2011. The delay in engine availability has extended that estimate to mid-first quarter 2011.

Meanwhile, due to the new delay, Kenya Airways is threatening to cancel its order for the new airplane.

ANA to retire the Boeing 747-400 from international service

ANA-All Nippon Airways (Tokyo) meanwhile will retire the Boeing 747-400 from international scheduled service at the end of this month. From September, the remaining three 747-400s will be used only for charter flights, especially to Canada. The international 747-400s will be retired by March 2011.

The 747-400 (D) (domestic) aircraft will remain in service for the
forseeable future.

ANA and Honeywell sign a new agreement, seeks partners for a new LCC

ANA-All Nippon Airways (Tokyo) and Honeywell have signed a 10-year maintenance agreement for support of its equipment on ANA’s new Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

Honeywell will provide spares, logistics and repair services for its equipment on board the aircraft. Honeywell has flight control electronics, navigation radios, crew information systems and interior and exterior lighting.

ANA is expected to receive its first 787-800 in December 2010 or January 2011.

In other news ,ANA is seeking international investment from other partner airlines and investment funds to help set up a new LCC which will be launched in early 2011 according to the Nikkei Business Daily.

ANA is expected to take a 30-50 percent stake in the new LCC. The ANA name will not be used for the new airline.

On the financial side, ANA reported a fiscal first quarter net loss of slightly over $60 million.
