Northwest Airlines retires the last Boeing 747-200F (updated)

Northwest Airlines-NWA (subsidiary of Delta Air Lines) (Minneapolis/St. Paul) operated the last of its Boeing 747-200 freighter flights on revenue flights on Saturday (December 19) as two of the giant aircraft touched down in Chicago and Los Angeles carrying full loads of cargo. Northwest flight NW 908 (with N632NW) departed Osaka and arrived in Chicago (ORD) with 73 tons of cargo, an 89 percent load factor (the last revenue flight). Northwest flight NW 906 (with N639US) departed Shanghai and arrived in Los Angeles (LAX) with 81 tons of cargo, a 99% load factor. Delta has parked its 10 wholly- owned Northwest 747-200 freighters, where they will remain in long-term storage. Two other 747s were returned recently to a leasing agent.

The pictured Boeing 747-251B N632NW (msn 23112) had the honor of operating the last revenue flight (flight NW 908). Here is a disposition of each aircraft and the total hours:

FedEx’s fiscal 1Q profit drops by 53 percent

FedEx Corporation (FedEx Express) (Memphis) reported fiscal first quarter (ending on August 31) net earnings of $181 million, representing a drop of 53 percent.

Alaska Air Group posts $29.1 m 2Q net profit

Alaska Air Group (Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air) (Seattle/Tacoma) posted a second quarter net profit of $29.1 million.

NCA introduces the “Green Freighter”

NCA-Nippon Cargo Airlines (Tokyo) is the first Japanese airline company to adopt an innovative new paint system, developed by Mankiewicz Gebr. and Company of Germany. The company will operate an “NCA Green Freighter” with its nose painted in two shades of green.

The newly painted Boeing 747-481F freighter JA04KZ (msn 34283) named “NCA Pegasus” became operational as the Green Freighter on Friday, May 8, taking off for Shanghai.

The improved paint, which incorporates new ingredients, covers the base material of the fuselage with thin layers of paint, effectively reducing the weight of the fuselage by around 45kg per aircraft. This reduction in weight will cut the amount of fuel consumed by about 42 drums per year.

The new paint is also weather-resistant, making it less vulnerable to rain and exposure to ultra violet rays, which cause degradation in color and gloss, while there is less paint stripping than with existing paint systems. This will extend the working life of the aircraft’s paint. It also reduces the amount of cleaning agent to be used and the polluted water that is discharged as it requires less frequent washing. The new paint system has a number of positive effects that help preserve the environment.

Delta to retire NWA Cargo 747-200Fs on Dec. 31

Delta Air Lines (Atlanta) in order to improve profitability of its cargo operation, will retire its 14 Northwest Cargo Boeing 747-200Fs on December 31, 2009. These 14 aircraft will not be repainted.

On the financial side, the company reported a net loss for the first quarter of $693 million, excluding special items. Excluding $684 million in realized fuel hedge losses and special items, DL’s results were basically break even. However DL’s reported net loss for the quarter is $794 million.

Delta completed the merger with Northwest Airlines on October 29, 2008. However their are still two air operators certificates (AOCs). The company is on track to have a single operating AOC by the end of 2009. When this occurs, this will be the technical end of Northwest Airlines-NWA.

Alaska Airlines again closes ANC operations

Alaska Airlines’ (Seattle/Tacoma) Anchorage operation is being destroyed by Mount Redoubt. The dominant carrier at ANC was forced again to shut down operations Saturday evening after Mount Redoubt erupted again around 3:40 p.m. Alaska time. Ted Stevens International Airport ceased all operations around 6 p.m. (1800) local time. AS cancelled 37 flights in and out of ANC on Saturday. Since the volcanic eruptions began on March 22, AS has cancelled more than 185 flights affecting an estimated 10,000 passengers. ANC is expected to reopen today.

Alaska Airlines resumes Anchorage operations

Alaska Airlines (Seattle/Tacoma) yesterday afternoon (March 27) resumed operations at Anchorage as the ash cloud from Mount Redoubt moved on.

FedEx Express MD-11 crashes at Tokyo Narita

FedEx Express (Memphis) has lost a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F freighter (N526FE, msn 48600, ex Delta N813DE) on landing in gusty winds at Tokyo (Narita) on Monday, March 23 (Tokyo time) (March 22 U.S. time). The aircraft, operating as flight FX 80 from Guangzhou, crashed in a fiery crash and is totally destroyed. Video shows the aircraft bounced at least twice, veered to the left and flipped on its side before bursting into flames. Unfortunately the two crew members died in the crash.
