Albawings to add Basle/Mulhouse/Freiburg

"Team Spirit", delivered on January 31, 2018

Albawings (Tirana) will add Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg as a new destination from Tirana, Albania starting on March 29, 2019.

The carrier has expanded its fleet to four Boeing 737s (three 737-400s and one 737-500).

Albawings was founded in February 2015 in Albania and is already connecting Albania with European destinations, mostly in Italy.

Wizz Air moves in to Austria and sets up a Vienna base

Wizz Air, the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, and one of Europe’s fastest growing airlines, has announced that it would add Austria as the 44th country in its network, by establishing base operations at Vienna Airport.

Wizz Air will open its Austrian base with one Airbus A320 aircraft in June, which will be followed by the deployment of two additional Airbus A321 aircraft in November. This fast growth of Wizz Air’s Vienna base will see Wizz Air operate a total of 17 new routes from the Austrian capital in 2018.

The base establishment represents an investment by Wizz Air of $331 million* and 120 new direct jobs with the airline will be created. The airline’s operations will also contribute to the local economy, supporting jobs in the aviation, transportation, hospitality and tourism industries.

Providing an extensive offer to both business and leisure travelers, the newest Wizz services will connect Vienna with Gdansk, Tuzla and Varna from April, with Bari, Malta, Rome, Valencia and Tel Aviv from June and with Billund, Bergen, Dortmund, Kutaisi, Larnaca, Nis, Ohrid, Tenerife and Thessaloniki from November.

In 2018 Wizz Air will offer 450,000 seats on sale on its Austrian routes, operating 69 weekly flights by the end of the year from Vienna Airport. By adding the Austrian capital to its ever growing route network, Wizz Air now connects 145 destinations across 44 countries, offering its customers very low fares and a friendly, quality customer experience onboard one of the youngest and most efficient fleets in Europe.

In other news, the airliner later announced a new route from Wroclaw to Bari, Italy. The new service will commence on March 31, 2018 and will operate with two weekly flights, on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

easyJet forecasts a series of technological milestones in 2018

easyJet (UK) has forecast reaching a number of key milestones in technological initiatives over the next 12 months.

Half of easyJet’s fleet is now Airbus A320 aircraft (above) following a program of up-gauging from 150-seat A319s to the larger aircraft, which have up to 186 seats, as well as a number of aircraft acquired which were previously operated by Air Berlin. By spring, the airline’s entire fleet will surpass 300 aircraft.

The airline will take delivery of its first A321neo in July, which will contribute towards easyJet’s initiative to decarbonise and quieten aviation. Further deliveries in 2018 will bring the number of neo aircraft in the fleet to 28 by the end of the year which provide 15% savings in CO2 emissions and a 50% reduction in noise compared to the aircraft they replace.

easyJet will continue to showcase the neo aircraft and its innovative environmental and cost efficient features at roadshows at the airline’s bases around the UK and Europe. Having already exhibited the aircraft in Amsterdam, the airline will also visit London Gatwick, Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle, Bristol, Manchester and Liverpool; Barcelona, Geneva, Milan Malpensa and Paris Orly.

easyJet will also continue to work alongside US-based start-up and electric aircraft pioneer Wright Electric on their development of an all-electric commercial aircraft and expects to launch the first flight of a hybrid nine seat aircraft within the next 12 months.

A new video produced by Wright Electric shows the progress of this pioneering project, demonstrating contra-rotating propeller technology which is one of the innovations driving Wright Electric’s development of electric aviation. This concept was invented over a century ago and is a more efficient means of propulsion. Electric motors will be able to deliver this more easily than jet engines and it will be a crucial element of Wright Electric’s all-electric passenger aircraft.

Germania adds new routes

In the summer of 2018, Germania is expanding its route network between Berlin and Turkey.

Five new Turkish destinations will be served by Germania every week: Dalaman, Samsun, Kayseri, Adana and Gaziantep.

Germania already operates flights from Berlin to attractive tourist destinations in Turkey. Three times a week to Antalya, and twice weekly to Bodrum. Next summer, Germania is going to increase its services from Berlin-Schönefeld and Berlin-Tegel and will offer a total of ten flights a week to Turkey.

Outside of Germany, Germania Flug (Switzerland) is adding a weekly Zurich – Vilnius A319 effective November 5, 2018.

In addition, the company will also add weekly A319 service linking Toulouse and Palermo.

Brussels Airlines to cut its costs by 10-15 percent as it looks back on 2017

Brussels Airlines looks back on a positive 15th Anniversary with this announcement:

Brussels Airlines comes to the end of its fifteenth anniversary. In 2017, the airline recorded growth every month of the year and highlights included the launch of Mumbai, the integration of Thomas Cook flight activities and the farewell of the AVRO aircraft.

Brussels Airlines started 2017 with an anniversary celebration on February 15, 2017. For the occasion, the airline produced an anniversary video called “We Go The Extra Smile for You Since 15 Years”, a remake of a unique marketing stunt from the airline’s early years, which reached no less than 2.4 million views.

During the anniversary year, Brussels Airlines continued its growth strategy. In spring, Mumbai, the first Brussels Airlines destination in Asia, was added to the network. The short/medium haul network expanded with Yerevan, Palma, Rhodes and Madeira.

A fleet harmonization project included the phase-out of the AVRO RJ type with 98 seats, which were replaced by larger Airbus A319/A320 aircraft with 40% and 80% more seating capacity respectively. The very last AVRO RJ left the fleet on October 28, 2017 after a Geneva flight that attracted spotters from about ten countries to Brussels Airport.

External growth was achieved thanks to the integration of Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium’s activities at the end of October. The vast majority of Thomas Cook holidaymakers now fly with Brussels Airlines. As a result, Brussels Airlines expanded its flight network with new winter sun destinations (Cape Verde, Tunisia, the Canary Islands and Egypt). The partnership will also add a series of new Mediterranean destinations, including the Greek islands, to the network next spring.

Thanks to these investments, Brussels Airlines will exceed the number of 9 million passengers in 2017 and increase its market share on the Belgian home market. This makes Brussels Airlines one of the fastest growing airlines in Europe. This growth pace will continue in 2018 and many investment projects are planned, including the extension of The Loft, the replacement of 7 Airbus A330 aircraft, the launch of new cabins on board the entire long-haul fleet and investment in further digitalization.

In other news, according to Reuters, the airline plans to cut costs by 10-15% to remain competitive:

Brussels Airlines, a unit of Lufthansa, plans to cut its costs by between 10 and 15 percent in the coming years in order to remain competitive with low-cost rivals, its chief executive told Belgian daily De Tijd.

The Belgian carrier, which Lufthansa took full control of in December 2016, has already reduced costs by 15 percent in the past three years through savings on staff and more efficient baggage and catering operations.

Bernard Gustin told De Tijd in an interview published on Saturday that cost-cutting had to continue. Passengers would pay a little more to travel with Brussels Airlines compared with a low-cost carrier, but that premium had to be kept to a minimum.

“We need to bring our costs down by at least 10-15 percent. This year already they have fallen by 5 percent,” he said.

Brussels Airlines expects to carry a record 9 million passengers in 2017 and Gustin said he was targeting an increase to 10 million in 2018.

Lufthansa has said it wants to integrate Brussels Airlines into budget platform Eurowings, although the Belgian carrier also serves business routes to Africa.

Eurowings to see its largest growth spurt in 2018

Previously on September 26, 2017, Lufthansa’s Supervisory Board approved and announced the rapid growth of its lower-cost Eurowings, especially in Europe:

The Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG approved the rapid expansion of the Eurowings Group at its meeting in September 2017. For this purpose, an investment framework of around EUR 1 billion was approved for the purchase and leasing of aircraft. The funds were used towards obtaining up to 61 aircraft, including 41 Airbus A320 Family aircraft and 20 Bombardier Q400s.

During the summer of 2017, Lufthansa wet leased 20 aircraft operated for Eurowings under the existing wet lease agreement with Airberlin; 15 by acquisition and five more leased with a purchasing option.

The Eurowings Group is expected to require up to 3,000 additional jobs in the cockpit and cabin operations, due to the hiring and intended acquisition of companies of the Air Berlin Group. Job advertisements and staffing have already started.

Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG: “We now have the great opportunity to take a decisive step forward with Eurowings in Europe. The Supervisory Board and the Executive Board agree that we are determined to seize this opportunity. With the approval of an additional investment framework for the acquisition of aircraft, the necessary preconditions have now been met. For Eurowings, it will be a major challenge to cope with the rapid growth. I am particularly pleased that this will enable us to offer up to 3,000 new employees a secure perspective in the Eurowings Group.”

The airline is growing so fast, it is leasing in aircraft from other airlines to meet the expansion in the first quarter of 2018 following the failure of Airberlin. Adria Airways (above) will operate Airbus A319s from the Cologne/Bonn hub for Eurowings. Czech Airlines will operate its Airbus A319s for Eurowings from Hamburg (below).
