Lufthansa Group plans to reduce flight schedule by up to 50 percent, may ground all Airbus A380s

Lufthansa Group has made this announcement:

Due to the exceptional circumstances caused by the spread of Covid-19 and the resulting drastic decline in bookings as well as numerous flight cancellations Lufthansa Group decided to reduce the flight capacity on offer even more than previously planned. Depending on the further development of demand, capacity is to be reduced by up to 50 per cent in the coming weeks. These capacity adjustments apply to all passenger airlines in the Lufthansa Group.

In addition, the extent to which the entire Airbus A380 fleet (14 aircraft) can be temporarily taken out of service in Frankfurt and Munich is currently being examined.

This measure is designed to reduce the financial consequences of the slump in demand. It complements the planned savings actions in the area of personnel, in material costs and project budgets, and other liquidity measures. In addition to an immediate hiring freeze, Lufthansa Group has already offered its employees the use of voluntary individual personnel measures in recent weeks. These include the granting of unpaid leave and bringing forward annual leave. The company is in talks with its operating partners and trade unions in order to avoid dismissals – among other measures – by means various part-time models, including probationary periods.

It is not yet possible to estimate the burden on earnings to be expected from current developments. The Group will publish key financial figures at the annual press conference on March 19, 2020.

Lufthansa launches the first Airbus A380 from the Munich hub

Lufthansa Airbus A380 on Sunday, March 25 operated for the first time, a take off from Munich on a regular passenger flight (above). Its destination was the City of Angels, Los Angeles.

Flight LH 452 took off for California at 12.00 noon.

Lufthansa chief pilot Raimund Müller welcomed nearly 509 passengers on board the “Munich”, as the A380 has been named – that’s how many seats the largest passenger aircraft in the world has. Among other things, 890 main courses, 530 cushions and 41 liters of tomato juice will also be loaded onto the aircraft for the passengers.

Not long afterwards, in the early evening, the second A380 flight will follow on: LH 722 took off at 7.15 pm, heading for Peking, and at 10.25 pm, the third A380 took off for Hong Kong, bearing flight number LH 730. All A380 flight connections will be offered daily from Munich.

The Airbus A380 has been Lufthansa’s flagship aircraft since 2010. Currently the fleet comprises 14 aircraft, five of which are to be stationed in Munich as of March 25.

When it comes to being environmentally friendly, the A380 stands out from the crowd with a specific fuel consumption of around three liters per passenger per 100 kilometers and a quiet Trent 900 engine made by Rolls Royce which has a very low level of noise emission.

Lufthansa is facing another pilot’s strike tomorrow

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) meanwhile is facing another day of strikes tomorrow (September 30) by its pilots, represented by the Vereinigung Cockpit union. The strike revolves around a dispute concerning retirement benefits.

The union issued this statement (translated from German):

The Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) 2014 plans industrial action at Lufthansa for tomorrow Tuesday, September 30.

Lufthansa pilots are on September 30, 2014 from 8.00 – 23.00 local time will strike on long-haul flights with the aircraft types Airbus A380, Boeing 747, Airbus A330 and Airbus A340 will not perform any departures from Frankfurt Airport. With this strike, a new collective agreement transitional care will be achieved.

Since Lufthansa management has not submitted any compromise or competitive offer, we are forced to take these other measures.

The Vereinigung Cockpit declares that it is always ready to avert strikes. We regret any inconvenience to the customers of Lufthansa.

Lufthansa brings the Airbus A380 to Houston

Lufthansa (Frankfurt) started Frankfurt-Houston (Bush Intercontinental) Airbus A380 service yesterday (August 1) making it the fourth U.S. city serviced by the A380 by Lufthansa.

Flight LH 440 touched down at approximately 13:37 CDT and was greeted to a water canon salute and a welcome party by airline, airport and government officials. The registration of the A380 used was D-AIMB. The return flight was LH 441.
