easyJet forecasts a series of technological milestones in 2018

easyJet (UK) has forecast reaching a number of key milestones in technological initiatives over the next 12 months.

Half of easyJetโ€™s fleet is now Airbus A320 aircraft (above) following a program of up-gauging from 150-seat A319s to the larger aircraft, which have up to 186 seats, as well as a number of aircraft acquired which were previously operated by Air Berlin. By spring, the airlineโ€™s entire fleet will surpass 300 aircraft.

The airline will take delivery of its first A321neo in July, which will contribute towards easyJetโ€™s initiative to decarbonise and quieten aviation. Further deliveries in 2018 will bring the number of neo aircraft in the fleet to 28 by the end of the year which provide 15% savings in CO2 emissions and a 50% reduction in noise compared to the aircraft they replace.

easyJet will continue to showcase the neo aircraft and its innovative environmental and cost efficient features at roadshows at the airlineโ€™s bases around the UK and Europe. Having already exhibited the aircraft in Amsterdam, the airline will also visit London Gatwick, Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle, Bristol, Manchester and Liverpool; Barcelona, Geneva, Milan Malpensa and Paris Orly.

easyJet will also continue to work alongside US-based start-up and electric aircraft pioneer Wright Electric on their development of an all-electric commercial aircraft and expects to launch the first flight of a hybrid nine seat aircraft within the next 12 months.

A new video produced by Wright Electric shows the progress of this pioneering project, demonstrating contra-rotating propeller technology which is one of the innovations driving Wright Electricโ€™s development of electric aviation. This concept was invented over a century ago and is a more efficient means of propulsion. Electric motors will be able to deliver this more easily than jet engines and it will be a crucial element of Wright Electric’s all-electric passenger aircraft.

Johan Lundgren, easyJetโ€™s Chief Executive Officer commented:

“Our aim is for easyJet to go from strength to strength in 2018. Iโ€™m incredibly pleased that the hard work and energy of our people will enable easyJet to achieve a number of technological and environmental milestones in 2018.

โ€œOur newest Airbus neo aircraft will continue to reduce our carbon and noise footprints, which have already been reduced by 38% and 50% respectively since 2000, compared to current aircraft.

โ€œOur partnership with Wright Electric will reach a number of milestones in the development of an all-electric commercial passenger aircraft and towards a future which isnโ€™t wholly reliant on jet fuel.โ€

Jeffrey Engler, CEO of Wright Electric commented:

“Working with easyJet to develop the next generation of air travel is a powerful validation of our technology approach. Weโ€™re incredibly excited to be reaching the first significant milestone in this pioneering project towards developing and commercialising our electric aircraft for the large and growing short-haul flight markets.

โ€œeasyJetโ€™s impressive team continues to provide valuable insights to our engineers about the critical aspects required to run a successful airline, from maintenance to revenue management, and we look forward to reaching further milestones in the years ahead.”

easyJet (UK) has issued this forecast for 2018 under its new CEO:

easyJet flies into 2018 by launching first flights from newly established base at Berlin Tegel.

Passenger numbers in 2018 are expected to rise from 80 million to around 90 million.

easyJetโ€™s fleet will increase from 280 to over 300 aircraft by spring 2018 of which at least 50% will be the Airbus A320 and 28 will be Neo aircraft.

The delivery of easyJetโ€™s first Airbus A321neo aircraft is part of the airlineโ€™s strategy to quieten and decarbonise aviation.

easyJet partner and electric aircraft pioneer Wright Electric to launch flights of a hybrid nine seat aircraft next year.

In 2018 around half of easyJetโ€™s network will connect customers to long haul services with โ€˜Worldwide by easyJetโ€™.

easyJet, Europeโ€™s leading airline, has forecast reaching a number of key milestones in expansion, as well as in environmental initiatives over the next 12 months, launching with first flights from newly established, former Airberlin base, Tegel, on January 5, 2018.

Passenger numbers are expected to hit records, to around 90 million by the end of the calendar year, a 10 million increase on easyJetโ€™s 80 million passenger record set in 2017.ย  A new easyJet base in Bordeaux will open in March as the airlineโ€™s sixth French base, creating 110 direct jobs, with three Airbus A320 aircraft to be based there and more than five new routes to be launched.ย  In Italy, the airlineโ€™s third largest market, a record 20 million seats will go sale for 2018.

By January half of easyJetโ€™s fleet will be Airbus A320 aircraft following a program of upgrades from 150-seat Airbus A319 to the larger aircraft, which can seat up to 186, as well as a number of aircraft acquired from Airberlin coming into operation. By spring, the airlineโ€™s entire fleet will surpass 300 aircraft.

As part of easyJetโ€™s initiative to decarbonise and quieten aviation, the airline will take delivery of its first Airbus A321neo in July.

The airline also expects to link around half of its network to long haul services through its connections product โ€˜Worldwide by easyJetโ€™ in 2018. A third of flights and over 24 million passengers are already able to connect through London Gatwick and Milan Malpensa to long haul flights to Africa, Asia, the USA and the Caribbean, as well as to other easyJet flights.

easyJet will also continue to work alongside US-based start-up and electric aircraft pioneer Wright Electric on their development of the all-electric commercial aircraft and is expected to launch the first flight of a hybrid nine seat aircraft within the next 12 months.

Johan Lundgren, easyJetโ€™s Chief Executive Officer commented:

โ€œMy ambition is to helpย easyJetย go from strength to strength next year.ย  Iโ€™m incredibly pleased to see that the hard work, energy and momentum that our people have delivered in 2017 will continue next year enabling easyJet to achieve a number of significant milestones.

โ€œReaching these milestones will be a result of the successful delivery of our strategy of purposeful and disciplined growth.ย  This continues to strengthen our market positions and to allow us to give passengers more choice, low fares and great service.โ€

easyJet extends โ€˜Worldwide by easyJetโ€™ to Milan Malpensa

easyJet (UK) has issued this statement:

Customers can connect easyJet flights to other airlinesโ€™ long haul flights and to other easyJet flights using the airportโ€™s connection product ViaMilano.

Airline partners Neos and Norwegian now offer connecting flights from Milan to a number of long haul destinations in Africa, Asia, the USA and the Caribbean.

One third of all easyJet flights will now be able to connect to airline partner and other easyJet flights.

New partners and additional connections to be rolled out at other European airports.

easyJet, Europeโ€™s leading airline, has announced that it is extending its โ€˜Worldwide by easyJetโ€™ connections platform to Milan Malpensa airport. This means that, combined with the existing connections offered through London Gatwick, one third of the airlineโ€™s flights – and over 24 million easyJet customers – will now be able to connect to airline partner long haul services and other easyJet flights in a single booking.

โ€˜Worldwide by easyJetโ€™ is the first global airline connections service by a European low fares airline. It launched in September 2017, enabling customers to connect easyJet flights through London Gatwick to long haul flights, with launch airline partners WestJet and Norwegian.

Now easyJet customers will also be able to seamlessly connect via Milan Malpensa from an easyJet flight to a flight with Norwegian, a flight with new connectivity airline partner Neos or to another easyJet flight, all using the airportโ€™s connections service ViaMilano.

All of this connectivity has been enabled by technology partner Dohop whose innovative platform allows easyJet customers to book connections and forward flights on easyJet.com

With easyJet now enabling passengers to connect through two of its largest bases, the extension to the Malpensa network will open up another profitable market segment for the airline and continue to challenge the efficiency of traditional connectivity models of legacy carriers.

easyJet will sign up other airlines to โ€˜Worldwide by easyJetโ€™ in early 2018, with talks already far advanced with middle and far-eastern carriers amongst others and the airline also plans to expand to other key easyJet airports in Europe.

โ€˜Worldwide by easyJetโ€™ does not impact easyJetโ€™s punctuality, its asset utilisation or operating model. The airline will not hold flights for connecting passengers. Worldwide by easyJet is subject to a 2 hour 30 minute โ€˜Minimum Connection Timeโ€™, which will give customers plenty of time to transfer between flights and/or terminals. Should a passenger miss a connecting flight they will be transferred to the next available flight.

Andrew Middleton, Ancillary Revenue Director for easyJet, commented:ย ย ย ย ย ย ย

ย โ€œWe are expanding our โ€˜Worldwide by easyJetโ€™ network to offer even more connections via another of our largest bases Milan Malpensa, with partners Neos and Norwegian. By doing so we will be able to profitably access a significant market segment of customers across Europe without compromising our operating model and punctuality.

โ€œWe continue to broaden our focus to launch more airline partners and add connectivity to more of our biggest airports – between them they have tens of millions of connecting passengers each year whose journeys begin or end in Europe.โ€

Norwegian Chief Commercial Officer Thomas Ramdahl said:ย

โ€œNorwegian is delighted to be among the first airlines to join Worldwide by easyJet. We are happy to offer to easyJet passengers in transit in Milan affordable intercontinental connections to Los Angeles. The previous experience in London Gatwick has been a satisfactory one and we are confident it will be the same in Milan Malpensa. With Norwegianโ€™s growing long-haul network and easyJetโ€™s extensive domestic and European ones in Malpensa, there is every reason to expect that this partnership will consolidate in the future, offering to an increasing number of passengers the chance to reach distant destinations comfortably and without additional stopoversโ€œ.

Aldo Sarnataro, Chief Commercial Officer for Neos said:

โ€We are very happy to be the first Italian long haul partner of the Worldwide project, and proud to be the first Italian airline operating the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.ย It is another important step forward to provide to our customer a wider and better flying experience”.

easyJet has put close to one million seats on sale for flights operating to and from Berlin Tegel between January 5 and March 24, 2018.

The new routes announced include four German domestic routes connecting Berlin with Dรผsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart.
