Embraer E190-E2 lands at London City Airport

On July 13, 2018ย an Embraer E190-E2 aircraft landed for the first time at London City Airport (LCY). The newest aircraft from Embraer, the worldโ€™s quietest and most efficient in its class, entered into service in April this year. An aircraft from Embraerโ€™s test fleet stopped off at LCY on its way to appear at next weekโ€™s Farnborough Air Show. The visit demonstrates the importance Embraer places on being able to offer LCY capability to airlines and its intention to work with London City Airport to certify the E2 to meet customer demand, which is likely to rise as LCY increases connectivity.

Arjan Meijer, Chief Commercial Officer, Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, โ€œFor Embraer, London City feels like home, wherever you look, our aircraft are there. So itโ€™s a big moment for us to bring the newest generation Embraer jet to this important European hub. We know that passengers will love the new aircraft, still with no middle seats and featuring larger overhead bins, and Londoners will also appreciate the quietness of the aircraft and its low emissions.โ€

London City Airport is Londonโ€™s most central airport, known for its convenience and speedy passenger experience. Its location means operating aircraft have to be compatible with the airportโ€™s steep approach and short runway. Embraer aircraft are well suited to this and have operated from LCY since 2009, when BA Cityflyer started operations with the E170. Embraer aircraft accounted for nearly 60% of departures from LCY in 2017.

Richard Hill, Chief Commercial Officer at London City Airport, said: โ€œto welcome the Embraer E2 to London City Airport for the first time is a crucial milestone towards certification and subsequent commercial operation at Londonโ€™s most central airport. The first generation of E-Jets have been intrinsic to London Cityโ€™s growth, so much so that up to three quarters of all passengers now land or depart on the aircraft. As we continue a ยฃ480m transformation, due for completion in 2022, the E2 has enormous potential for London City, with proven ability to operate with less noise, fewer emissions, and better fuel efficiency to open up new destinations, delivering significant benefits for our airline customers, passengers and local neighbors.โ€

In certification testing EASA figures confirmed the E190-E2 has the lowest noise levels among all new generation single aisle aircraft. If this performance can be replicated in the operational environment of London City Airport, the E190-E2 would meet the minimum noise restrictions of the airportโ€™s new Aircraft Noise Categorisation Scheme (ANCS), which will be fully introduced next year. The E190-E2 is the first of a new generation of crossover narrowbody jets from Embraer. The aircraft entered into service with Norwegian carrier Widerรธe in April.

The E195-E2 goes into service next year with Azul in Brazil. The E190-E2 cuts fuel burn by more than 17%, and is the quietest passenger jet in the world today both in the cabin and outside.

Since entering revenue service, the E-Jets family has received more than 1,800 orders and over 1,400 aircraft have been delivered. Today, E-Jets are flying in the fleet of 70 customers in 50 countries. The versatile 70 to 150-seat family is flying with low-cost airlines as well as with regional and mainline carriers.

Boeing and Embraer together: Strategic partnership MOU signed

Boeing and Embraer announced they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a strategic partnership that positions both companies to accelerate growth in global aerospace markets.

The non-binding agreement proposes the formation of a joint venture comprising the commercial aircraft and services business of Embraer that would strategically align with Boeing’s commercial development, production, marketing and lifecycle services operations. Under the terms of the agreement, Boeing will hold an 80 percent ownership stake in the joint venture and Embraer will own the remaining 20 percent stake.

“By forging this strategic partnership, we will be ideally positioned to generate significant value for both companies’ customers, employees and shareholders โ€“ and for Brazil and the United States,” said Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing’s Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. “This important partnership clearly aligns with Boeing’s long-term strategy of investing in organic growth and returning value to shareholders, complemented by strategic arrangements that enhance and accelerate our growth plans,” Muilenburg said.

“The agreement with Boeing will create the most important strategic partnership in the aerospace industry, strengthening both companies’ leadership in the global market,” said Paulo Cesar de Souza e Silva, Embraer Chief Executive Officer and President. “The business combination with Boeing is expected to create a virtuous cycle for the Brazilian aerospace industry, increasing its sales potential, production, creating jobs and income, investments and exports, and in doing so, adding more value to customers, shareholders and employees.”

The transaction values 100 percent of Embraer’s commercial aircraft operations at $4.75 billion, and contemplates a value of $3.8 billion for Boeing’s 80 percent ownership stake in the joint venture. The proposed partnership is expected to be accretive to Boeing’s earnings per share beginning in 2020 and to generate estimated annual pre-tax cost synergies of approximately $150 million by year three.

The strategic partnership will bring together more than 150 years of combined leadership in aerospace and leverage the two companies’ highly complementary commercial product lines. The partnership is a natural evolution of a long-standing history of collaboration between Boeing and Embraer over more than 20 years.

On finalization, the commercial aviation joint venture will be led by Brazil-based management, including a President and Chief Executive Officer. Boeing will have operational and management control of the new company, which will report directly to Muilenburg.

The joint venture will become one of Boeing’s centers of excellence for end-to-end design, manufacturing, and support of commercial passenger aircraft, and will be fully integrated into Boeing’s broader production and supply chain.

Boeing and the joint venture would be positioned to offer a comprehensive, highly complementary commercial airplane portfolio that ranges from 70 seats to more than 450 seats and freighters, offering best-in-class products and services to better serve the global customer base.

In addition, both companies will create another joint venture to promote and develop new markets and applications for defense products and services, especially the KC-390 multi-mission aircraft, based on jointly-identified opportunities.

“Joint investments in the global marketing of the KC-390, as well as a series of specific agreements in the fields of engineering, research and development and the supply chain, will enhance mutual benefits and further enhance the competitiveness of Boeing and Embraer,” said Nelson Salgado, Embraer’s Executive Vice President, Financial and Investor Relations.

Finalization of the financial and operational details of the strategic partnership and negotiation of definitive transaction agreements are expected to continue in the coming months. Upon execution of these agreements, the transaction would then be subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals, including approval from the Government of Brazil, as well as other customary closing conditions. Assuming the approvals are received in a timely manner, the transaction is expected to close by the end of 2019, 12-18 months after execution of the definitive agreements.

“This strategic partnership is a natural evolution of the long-standing history of collaboration between Boeing and Embraer on a range of aerospace initiatives over almost three decades,” said Greg Smith, Boeing Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Enterprise Strategy & Performance. “It is aligned with Boeing’s enterprise strategy of pursuing strategic investment opportunities where they demonstrate real value and accelerate our organic growth plans. This partnership will strengthen the vertical capabilities of Boeing and enhance value for our customers through the full lifecycle of industry-leading products and services.”

Boeing and Embraer will benefit from a broader scale, resources and footprint, including global supply chain, sales and marketing, and services network, which will enable them to capture benefits from best-in-class efficiencies across the organizations. Additionally, the strategic partnership will provide opportunities to share best practices in manufacturing and across development programs.

The transaction will have no impact on Boeing and Embraer financial guidance for 2018 or Boeing’s cash deployment strategy and commitment to returning approximately 100 percent of free cash flow to shareholders.

Boeing and Embraer confirm discussions on potential combination

Embraer has announced a one-year delay of the introduction of the E175 E2 jet

Embraer E175-E2 (Flt)(Embraer)(LRW)

Embraer S.A.has announced that it has revised its initial projection of certification and entry into service of the E175 E2 jet from 2020 to 2021. This rescheduling is based on the following two factors:

  • Continued interest in the current generation E175 jet in the North American market; and
  • Recent negotiations between the major US airlines and their respective pilot unions during which the maximum takeoff weight restrictions for 76-seat aircraft included in the relevant scope clauses remained unchanged.

The next round of negotiations between the major US airlines and their respective pilot unions is scheduled to occur in 2019 at which time such restrictions may be revisited.

The expected timeframes of certification and entry into service for the other models of this family of aircraft, the E190 E2 and the E195 E2, continue unchanged and should occur in the first half of 2018 and in 2019, respectively. The Company reiterates that the development and certification program of these aircraft is progressing as expected.

Boeing and Embraer unveil its newest E170 ecoDemonstrator aircraft

Boeing Embraer ERJ 170 EcoDemonstrator (Boeing)(LRW)

Boeing and Embraer S.A. unveiled the next phase of the Boeing ecoDemonstrator program on July 7. The program expands Boeing and Embraer’s cooperation agreement and will test technologies to improve airplane environmental performance and accelerate their introduction into the marketplace.

An Embraer E170 will serve as the flying testbed and will feature advanced environmental technologies that will undergo operational testing in Brazil during August and September.

The ecoDemonstrator flights will test several technologies designed to reduce carbon emissions, fuel use and noise including

  • LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology using lasers to measure air data parameters such as true airspeed, angle of attack and outside air temperature. LIDAR shows potential to increase air data reliability by complementing current sensors, which could lead to further innovations that improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.
  • An “ice phobic” paint designed to reduce icing and help prevent accumulation of dirt and bugs due to its low adhesive property. The special paint can help operators save water by reducing the need for frequent aircraft washing.
  • A new wing design with improved slats to reduce noise on takeoff and approach.
  • Special sensors and air visualization techniques near the wing surface to better understand in-flight aerodynamics. This analysis could lead to further innovations to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, such as new wing designs.
  • A Brazilian-produced biofuel blend made up of 10 percent bio-kerosene and 90 percent fossil kerosene, the maximum mixture according to international standards. Studies have shown that sustainably produced aviation biofuel emits 50 to 80 percent lower carbon emissions through its life cycle than fossil jet fuel.

The ecoDemonstrator tests illustrate Boeing and Embraer’s continued investments to improve fuel efficiency and environmental performance of aircraft and meet the new carbon emissions standard announced by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) earlier this year.

The ecoDemonstrator collaboration expands a relationship that began in 2012 when Boeing and Embraer signed a cooperation agreement to benefit their customers, their companies and the global aviation industry. Since then, Boeing and Embraer have supported Embraer’s KC-390 defense aircraft program and improved runway safety by providing commercial customers with tools to reduce runway excursions. Last year Boeing and Embraer opened a joint biofuel research center in Sรฃo Josรฉ dos Campos to perform biofuel research and coordinate research with Brazilian universities and other institutions.

To date, the ecoDemonstrator program has tested more than 50 technologies, using a Next-Generation 737-800 (2012), 787 (2014) and 757 (2015) as flying testbeds.
