AAIB: Boeing 787 fire caused by Honeywell’s ELT, requests the FAA to turn off all 787 ELTs

Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), investing the on-board fire on Ethiopian Airlines’ parked Boeing 787-8 ET-AOP at London Heathrow Airport, has issued a Special Bulletin on the incident. CLICK HERE to read the full report.

According to Reuters, the AAIB reported theย the “fire occurred in the upper portion of the rear fuselage where the 787’s emergency locator transmitter (ELT) device, made by U.S. firm Honeywell is located.

There are no other aircraft system in this area of the plane which, with the aircraft unpowered, contained stored energy capable of causing such a fire, the British agency said.

The AAIB also recommended that the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ensure the power is turned off in all Honeywell-made ELT systems in Boeing 787 Dreamliners. A source close to the probe said this could mean removing the ELT’s batteries.”

AAIB: No evidence the Ethiopian 787 fire at London Heathrow Airport was caused by the batteries

Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has classified the Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 787-8 ET-AOP (msn 34744) fire at London Heathrow Airport on Friday (July 12) as a “serious incident”. The important statement in the message below is the statement at the end is the heat damage in upper rear fuselage “is remote from the area in which the aircraft main and APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) batteries are located, and, at this stage, there is no evidence of a direct causal relationship”.

US Airways launches Charlotte-London Heathrow service today

US Airways (Phoenix) today (March 30) will begin daily, nonstop service between its largest hub in Charlotte, North Carolina and London’s preferred business airport, Heathrow. The daily flight will supplement the airline’s existing daily service between its international gateway in Philadelphia and Heathrow, and replaces its current service between Charlotte and London’s Gatwick airport, which ended yesterday.

US Airways will operate the service between Charlotte and London Heathrow with Airbus A330 aircraft that features Envoy, the airline’s international business class. Customers traveling in Envoy will experience the remarkably comfortable and private Envoy Suite equipped with an adjustable seat that reclines into a fully flat bed. The Envoy Suite also features personal in-flight entertainment and a 110-volt universal power outlet.

US Airways to switch the Charlotte-London route to Heathrow Airport on March 30

US Airways (Phoenix) today announced that service between the airline’s largest hub in Charlotte, N.C. and London’s preferred business airport, Heathrow Airport, will start on March 30, 2013. The daily flight will supplement the airline’s existing daily service between its international gateway in Philadelphia and Heathrow and replace its current service between Charlotte and London’s Gatwick Airport, which ends on March 29.

US Airways will operate service between Charlotte and London Heathrow with Airbus A330-300 aircraft with seating for 28 in Envoy, the airline’s international business class, and 263 in the main cabin.

The flight schedule is as follows.

Caribbean Airlines takes delivery of its second Boeing 767-300 ER

Caribbean Airlines (Port of Spain) on August 31, 2012 accepted this former LAN Airlines Boeing 767-316 ER, its second copy of the type. The pictured 767-316 ER is now appropriately registered as 9Y-LHR (msn 27597, ex CC-CDP) in salute of London Heathrow Airport, served for many years by BWIA.
