Frontier Airlines announces 25 new routes, including service to Central America, new crew base in Miami

Frontier Airlines today announces 25 nonstop routes, including its return to Central America with flights to Guatemala City and San Salvador.

The carrier is also adding service to two new destinations in the Dominican Republic: Santiago and Santo Domingo.

In addition, the airline introduced plans for a crew base in Miami.

Opening in March 2020, Frontierโ€™s newest base in Miami will grow to more than 100 flight attendants and 30 pilots within the first three months. The base will create new jobs in Miami for pilots and flight attendants, contributing to the areaโ€™s economic growth. In addition, Frontierโ€™s base commitment in South Florida will allow for additional flexibility scheduling flights and increased reliability.

Frontier operates over 90 A320 family aircraft and has the largest A320neo fleet in the U.S.

With over 150 new Airbus planes on order, Frontier will continue to grow to deliver on the mission of providing affordable travel across America.

American Airlines celebrates 30 years in Miami

This month, American Airlines celebrates the 30th anniversary of its bold move to establish a hub at Miami International Airport (MIA).

In October 1989, American operated just 19 flights a day to six cities from MIA. Today, Miamiโ€™s hometown carrier operates more than 350 flights a day to nearly 130 destinations from the hub โ€” Americanโ€™s largest international gatewayโ€” including service to more than 70 cities across Latin America and the Caribbean. Americanโ€™s Cargo operation has also grown substantially. In 1989, American moved 39.5 million pounds of mail and freight. Today, it moves nearly 380 million pounds annually.

The Most Service to Latin America

No other carrier at MIA offers as much service to Latin America as American. Last month, American announced increased service between MIA and:

  • Santiago, Chile (SCL)
  • Lima, Peru (LIM)
  • Sรฃo Paulo, Brazil (GRU)

Earlier this year, the airline added new service to Cordoba, Argentina (COR), and Santiago de Cuba, Cuba (SCU) โ€” destinations that can only be reached from the U.S. on American.

A $21 Billion Economic Impact

American is a critically important economic engine for Miami and South Florida. What started out as a small hub in 1989 with fewer than 300 employees has grown to be the third-largest private employer in Miami-Dade County with more than 13,500 team members and an annual payroll exceeding $1.8 billion.

Americanโ€™s economic impact also goes far beyond the team members that care for our customers. More than 162,000 additional jobs are created through businesses that support our MIA operations, meaning that Americanโ€™s Miami hub contributes more than $21 billion annually to South Floridaโ€™s economy.

โ€œAmerican Airlines has a significant economic impact on our county,โ€ said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. โ€œIts Miami hub helps drive South Florida’s economy, and its robust schedule is critical to our communityโ€™s economic development. We value Americanโ€™s commitment to this community and know that its growth in the coming years will continue to stimulate our local economy.โ€

Investment in Miami and South Florida

Americanโ€™s commitment to MIA doesnโ€™t stop with its network and team members. The airline has invested heavily in the community over the last three decades and supported dozens of organizations, including the United Way, Camillus House, Autism Speaks, Feeding South Florida and the Nicklaus Childrenโ€™s Hospital Foundation. In 2018, Americanโ€™s corps of caring team member volunteers, the DoCrew, dedicated more than 30,000 hours of their time to these and other nonprofit organizations.

American is also committed to promoting Miami as a great place to live, work and play. The carrier partners with the Beacon Council, Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, amongst other civic organizations, to ensure the continued growth of both the city of Miami and the hub. Americanโ€™s success in South Florida has helped grow the cityโ€™s reputation as a premier destination for travelers around the world.

โ€œGreater Miami is a global gateway and welcomes a high volume of international visitors daily,โ€ said William D. Talbert, III, CDME, President and CEO of Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau. โ€œToday, the GMCVB celebrates American Airlines Miami hub 30 year anniversary alongside our partners in travel. With the majority of Greater Miamiโ€™s visitors arriving via air, American Airlines infrastructure investment in our community serves as a foundational platform to the local tourism industryโ€™s vitality.โ€

Help for Neighboring Communities

American has also been committed to providing disaster relief for neighboring communities after a number of hurricanes impacted the region over the past few years. After hurricanes Irma and Maria wreaked havoc across the Caribbean islands in 2017, MIA team members immediately stepped up to help people impacted by the storms. American transported 460,000 pounds of relief supplies to Puerto Rico, including food, water, cots, tarps and generators, in wake of the storm. In total, the number of cargo and relief items delivered to the Caribbean totaled more than 3 million pounds.

Most recently, the MIA team helped colleagues in the Bahamas who were impacted by Hurricane Dorian. Americanโ€™s Miami hub raised more than $55,000 for team members who lost nearly everything in the storm. The team also shipped more than 14,000 pounds of relief supplies within days of the hurricane.

โ€œAt American, we know that whatโ€™s good for Miami-Dade is good for American,โ€ said Liscano. โ€œOur commitment to Miami remains as strong as ever. We will continue to be the airline of choice for our customers, the premier gateway to Latin America and a loyal member of the South Florida community.โ€

Ethiopian Airlines launches historic cargo route at MIA

(PRNewsfoto/Miami International Airport)

On August 29, Ethiopian Airlines launched the first of two weekly freighter flights between the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa and Miami, creating the first-ever cargo-only route between the African continent and Miami International Airport. The scheduled flights will operate on a route that includes intermediate stops in Spain, Colombia and Belgium on inbound and outbound services. All flights will utilize Boeing 777-200LRF freighter aircraft.

Ethiopian’s announcement is the latest milestone in MIA’s strategic plan to expand into new global markets, adding to the synergies created by its extensive cargo network throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

During 2017, TACA Peru began four weekly freighter flights from five South American cities; Mexico-based Aeronaves TSM commenced 10 weekly freighter flights from Cancun; and Qatar Airways launched two weekly cargo flights from Doha, with intermediate stops in Luxembourg, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Quito, andย Liege.

In 2018, Southern Air began weekly all-cargo service from Hong Kong via Anchorage; Turkish Cargo launched a second weekly frequency from Istanbul; and Polar Air Cargo launched direct Tokyo freighter service.

Ethiopian Airlines issued this short statement:

Ethiopian Airlines, the largest Aviation Group in Africa and SKYTRAX certified Four Star Global Airline, is pleased to announce that it commenced twice weekly freighter service to Bogota, Colombia on August 29, 2018. The cargo service will depart from Zaragoza (Spain) and will fly to Bogota with a stopover in Miami, using the Boeing 777 freighter aircraft.

The airline began offering daily flights for the first time in 55 years, connecting Havana with Miami, New York-JFK, and Atlanta. Delta was the first U.S. airline to open a City Ticket Office at the Havana sector of La Rampa, which was later expanded to accommodate increased customer demand.

Delta continues to expand connectivity options for customers traveling between the United States and Latin America and the Caribbean. In 2018, Delta launched a series of services from New York, including:
